1 WTC's 20-story base gets new glass design (http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20111115/REAL_ESTATE/111119917)
By Theresa Agovino
November 15, 2011 3:37 p.m.

A new plan to clad the base of 1 World Trade Center in glass was approved Tuesday bythe building's owner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, after technical problems forced the redesign of a previous scheme earlier this year.
Crain's reported this month that the Port Authority had reached a new design after the plan to enclose the 185-foot-tall concrete base in prismatic glass panels designed to reflect light were too difficult to make and shattered easily.
The Port Authority's board authorized $37.2 million towards project and contract costs. Permasteelisa North American Corp. will engineer, fabricate and install the new facade, which will consist of stainless steel slat panels around the building's concrete base, covered with glass fins. The glass fins will reflect light during the day, giving the building's base a distinctive look, the Port Authority said.
The new design is significantly less expensive than the original. In 2008, the Port Authority awarded an $82 million contract to manufacture and put up the glass, but it was unclear how much of that money was ever dispersed.
Installation of the redesigned façade will begin in 2013 and is expected to keep pace with the scheduled completion of the tower by the end of that year.
"The World Trade Center site continues to progress at a historic pace and approving this design is a cost-effective solution to a complex problem," Port Authority Chairman David Samson said in a statement. "It provides a practical way to cover the tower's secure base, and give it an innovative, inviting look for the thousands of workers who will be employed there and the millions of tourists who will visit it."
The design is the latest chapter in a saga to design the signature skyscraper at the World Trade Center site so it will be among the safest in the world because of its allure as a potential terrorist target yet at the same time be distinctive enough to symbolize the city's rebound from tragedy.
The massive concrete base is one of the building's major safety elements but it means that office space in the 1,776-foot tower doesn't start until the 20th floor. The challenge was to create a facade that did not look like a bunker and suggested movement, life and light where none existed. However, the panels of prismatic glass broke too easily. In an interview with Crain's earlier this year, tower architect David Childs, a consulting design partner at Skidmore Owings & Merrill, said, “It had to be a proud gesture to our resilience.”
Mr. Childs had to redesign the building back in 2005 when the New York Police Department voiced concerns about whether the tower could withstand a blast from a car bomb. A year later, Mr. Childs presented the plan with the glass-wrapped concrete base.

Nothing will ever be as Grand and Impressive as the Twin Towers.

While most of us would have been pleased to see the original towers rebuilt (to more robust, modern standards), it would have been insensitive to the poor souls that perished AND the thousands more relatives, friends & associates to build a replica, that would only serve as a reminder of the tragic event. A memorial surrounded by the, when completed, just as impressive buildings sounds about right.......

It was just a tribute to the fantastic towers and I note that they were a great symbol of New York which this skyscraper wont be in the same way.

It lacks something unique. It can be located in any city in America or Asia. We have seen it in many cities around the world. In every Chinese city, there's something similar.

Ah! I see what you're getting at now.

Not that I want to take anything away from the Twin Towers, they were taller versions of the most modern Skycrapers of the time ie. Seagram Building. Having said that, building two tallest towers side-by-side was Symbolic & Very American :)

Speaking as a non-architect, just difficult to think of an alternative to the buildings being constructed. Like most actual-architects I guess

I'm disappointed they haven't even begun to manufacture the base cladding yet. For some reason I was under the impression it had been underway and we would see the first panels installed within a few months but I guess if it doesn't delay completion it's fine.

Lulz, wait until the whole complex is done. It will be massive. I think people underrate how massive and big this will be. It are virtually four supertalls, and two skyscrapers. Which is massive. And given the already built buildings, this could be one of the most amazing clusters in the whole world. AND it's "only" one of many skylines in that area.

Base cladding is left till late on to avoid damage

More likely, the reason why it hasn't been installed is because the original glass they were going to use failed the blast testing and they are having to use another system.

http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/port-authority-scraps-prismatic-glass-facade-for-one-world-trade-center-20110512-apx

It doesn't get into specifics in this article, but since this facade is outside of the hardened concrete barrier in the attrium, it is intended to be destroyed by any significant street level blast. The concrete barrier would then prevent any of the glass from flying into the attrium. However, they don't want the glass to fragment into shards, but to turn into small pellets, like when a car window is busted. It's my understanding that the original facade was not doing this well enough.

It might be true that they don't want it damaged during construction, but I don't think this facade is any more likely to be damaged than the remainer of the facade that is already in place.

Yes, it will also be possibly twice the size of the old world trade center. OR at least 1.5x the size due to shorter towers. I bet there will be a tower 6 that will be built at where the performing arts center will be. And the performing arts center will be the top of the tower.

True, but this is significantly late, and will be installed in the final stages of the building's interior being completed as opposed to around the time the building tops out.

The public was given a sneak peek Tuesday of what the base of the new One World Trade Center will look like once it’s completed in 2013.

The new design for the exterior cladding on One World Trade Center features horizontal stainless steel panels behind vertical glass fins going up the 20 stories of the fortress-like base.

“They will reflect light during the day and the night and give the building’s base a distinctive look,” said Port Authority executive director Patrick Foye on Tuesday. “In the evening, the combination of the water and the lights on the memorial pools we think, frankly, will be picked up by the glass on the podium at One World Trade Center and it’s consistent with the overall aesthetic of the site.”

Foye calls the concept superior aesthetically and cost-effective.

“It is going to save the Port Authority about $8-to-$12 million and the product will be manufactured by an Italian company located in Greenwich and Windsor, Connecticut,” he said on Tuesday.

Aren't the corners of the base cut to form triangles, cause in these renders the base looks like a cube?

kazetuner
November 17th, 2011, 06:25 PM
The base on the glass renders seems to be missing the tapering on the corners, is that the way they're gonna do it or is it just a faulty render?

Edit: Beat to it, lol

ramvid01

If you read the article in WNY you will see that they cut the corners out of the base design. Its a shame, since now those triangles at the base are useless.

ElVoltageDR
November 17th, 2011, 06:36 PM
Love the glass, but I'm sort of sad to see that the design of the base is changing slightly so that it won't show off the triangles at the base. Not that the new design looks bad though.

SOM November 2011 Fact sheet (http://www.som.com/common/images/wtc_press_kit/one.world.trade.center.fact.sheet.pdf)

The tower rises from a podium wall base whose square plan – 200 feet by 200 feet – is the same
size as the footprints of the original Twin Towers. The podium wall base is 186 feet tall and consists
of vertical laminated glass fins and horizontal stainless steel slats. The more than 4000 glass fins,
each measuring 13 feet 4 inches by two feet, are positioned at varying angles in a regular pattern
over the height of the podium. This pattern both accommodates ventilation for the mechanical levels
behind the podium wall, and in combination with a reflective coating refracts and transmits light to
create a dynamic, shimmering glass surface.

Yes, columns won't be visible, and they won't be either at night. LEDs will get attached to the slots. The only way columns can get visible is by moving these LEDs to a few feet inside the podium, or leaving them as they are but removing the ones that are located just in front of the structure:

yeh! almost 15 fl. to go! When is the expected finnishing day of the tower?

More likely 10 real floors and 3 mezzanines. Topping out by 1st Q 2012, curtain wall at mid-2012 and interior work done by the end of 2013 :okay:

dumb question but will the new pedestal cladding have different color schemes like the top of the empire state building?

like sometimes, it can be colored differently for different occasions?

Topping out by 1st Q 2012

You seem do not get what T/O means.. It will be T/O when the spire is build, so I guess not in 1st Q 2012, but something like 2012 Q3 or Q4, right?

It's just semantics, but you're right, officially a building tops out when the last structural steel is placed at the top of the overall framework. So yes, finishing the perimeter columns by 1st Q 2012 (this means the top of the structural roof) and topping out (antenna construction) by Autumn 2012.

Imagine: A building is topped out and the opening of the building has already been. But 3 years later, the owners decide to increase the top. Than the building is topped out twice.

The new design for the cladding of the base is terrible! The building now looks like it's been designed by three separate groups that never talk to each other. I've never thought the spire worked with the rest of the design and now the podium and the rest of the building don't work together in either! :ohno::ohno: What are these architects thinking, or not thinking, whichever the case may be!

[I posted the following re: the new base design, on SSP yesterday]

On the one hand, I never really liked the chamfered corners, so this cubic design appeals to me. The glass and steel look awesome, IMO. I love the greater verticality of it.

I am a little disappointed though, that the steel structure of the base will now not be expressed externally at all, as on the corners of the rest of the tower, even though I never liked the design.

Because we all know what the underlying structure is, this new facade will likely always seem more like a draped curtain (albeit of glass and steel) than an actual wall to me. If this un-chamfered cube had been the design from the beginning, with steel structure to match, this would probably not be the case.

Greetings from Polish :)

Roof height used below!

http://i43.************/a10cpj.jpg

1WTC = 340 meters or 1115 feet out of 418 meters or 1371 feet
4WTC = Approximately 217 meters or 712 feet out of 298 meters or 977 feet Important note: The height of 4WTC shown in the diagram is wrong, I draw it when it was thought that 4WTC already has steel for the first two setback floors! This was later shown to not be true but I already edited the drawing! The height that is stated here (below the diagram) is the right one!
1 57 = Approximately 153 meters or 502 feet out of 306 meters or 1005 feet

(Note: I used the 418 meter figure for 1WTC when measured from the lowest above ground entrance and I used the 298 meter figure for 4WTC.)

Yeah that render is great. You can't blame the design, as there are very real concerns with security, so they have to do what they can.
I agree security is a major concern but they already have the concrete blast walls inside. The curtain walls are just for decoration, these will not really provide any more strength than the original design. They just look terrible and really make this building look like three separate designs stacked together!
I still like the skin of the 9/11 Museum, for 1 WTC base.
It certainly would look much better than this.

Agreed - Brooklyn Heights/DUMBO really provides a great vantage point, but this amazing image was taken high up from one of the residential highrises (along Cadman Plaza I believe) - which is why you haven't seen many. The views from the promenade and waterfront have 1WTC either hidden or not as high as even the Gehry. It's a tougher shot for random tourists and residents.

Hi Otie.

That's the kind of stuff that needs to be posted - bravo.

The council will surely measure from the finished floor at the threshold of the North entrance (the lowest, significant, open-air, pedestrian entrance).

1787' 4" - 544.78 meters - height to architectural top
1795' 4" - 547.22 meters - height to tip

As I tried to convey to someone here months ago, 1776 will not play a factor in any official measurement.

As a side note;
Are the 3' 4" lower numbers as per the plans ?
I thought the plans have elevation 0.00 as an average finished floor height of the ground level and not the F/F at the threshold of the main lobby entrance ?

Ray.

I used the main lobby floor as the starting point in order to not to confuse people, since almost all of them aren't interested in the true elevations.
In prints, the finished main lobby floor is at El. 311'-2"; as you may know, zero elevation is 300' below mean high tide at Battery Park Point. All PA projects use this as basis so they don't have to deal with negative numbers like in tunnels.
I can't confirm the exact elevation of the north entrance since Zensteeldude didn't publish on his Flickr Photostream any prints displaying this section; however he did shared some prints with STR, who stated himself that north entrance is at El. 307'-10" a couple of months ago.
One other thing, the lightning rod height was a completely guess doing a pixel analyisis with the diagram released by ArchRecord. The final arrangement can vary from any set of prints.

Hi Otie.

Thanks for the response.

That PA zero elevation is also 297.37 feet below NGVD1929 datum, which is a hybrid model of the mean sea level from 26 tide guages and a set of elevations of all bench marks resulting from the adjustment of 1929.

STR has the lightning rod at 5 feet in one of his labeled drawings, so 1792 height to tip.
We'll see what the official measure turns out to be.

Looks like the 1787 height to arch. top is a good bet though.

If winter doesn't get tough, you shall probably see the last perimeter columns being installed above the roof slab.

^^ Why do you repost the same info and diagram every two pages? It makes no sense! A simple "It is 340m tall atm" is more than enough!!!!

I agree with you. It's nice, that you wanna give a lot of information but I didn't ask:"Where's a new diagram from Kanto?" I just wanted to know the current roof height.

Indeed. Please stop this madness Kanto.

Anyway, why don't they feature a display for 1WTC at the construction site, telling passengers what height it's at? You see such displays at most of the skyscraper constructions in Frankfurt (Germany).

One World Trade Center is the same height it's been for the last month and that is (1,107' 8") and with the splice (1,111' 8"). However, the perimeter steel looks to be a bit shorter than the core steel is right now so I'm guessing that it's about at (1,100') because some of those columns exceed the 4' splice. Basically the core columns are at floor 89 so we should expect some new steel this week if the weather permits and that should bring the steel to about floor 90 (1,130' 8"). Hope this answers all your questions. What sucks is that I don't think it will hit 1,200' this year because we're falling a bit behind and there is only one more month left in 2011 so I'm guessing we should wrap the year up with either the 91st (1,151' 8") or 92nd floors (1,181' 8"). Mechanical floors take more time I mean look at how long Tower 4's mechanical floor is taking. It is still unclear if floors 89 & 90 are office or mechanical so we'll wait and see. This year has been great so at least in 2012 we finally get back to the height we were at up until September 11th, 2001.
