Going back to the floor numbering, lowermanhattan.info (http://www.lowermanhattan.info/construction/project_updates/freedom_tower_26204.aspx) says we're already above floor 91.. others stated some pages before that Kanto's pic below is right.. so what is correct?

*The following information was last updated on December 9, 2011

- Facade installation is now above floor 67
- Tower steel is now above floor 91. It is expected to top out in the first quarter of 2012.
- Concrete is now being installed above floor 84

I will borrow KenFromJersey's pic for my question. Is this how the floors are:

The Glass adds a really nice ethereal quality to it. That and the angle the facades slope up at make this appear to be a genuinely massive crystal shard from space !

They've messed with the numbers, the current steel is at 90th (1130' 8" above the main lobby floor), or to the splices at ~1140'.

The windows aren't blue, they simply reflect the color of the sky. The building will look different depending on the time of day, weather, etc. (it will look more gray if it's cloudy, stuff like that)

"One WTC Pedestal to Feature Triple-Laminated Glass from Interpane
December 14, 2011
By Sahely Mukerji

The newly designed exterior cladding system of One World Trade Center that will cover the 185-foot tall secure base will be triple laminated, says Kenneth A. Lewis, project manager and director of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) LLP in New York, the architect on the project. "It's low-iron glass with acid-etched finish on the #6 surface," he says. "The total area of laminated glass fins is approximately 106,000 square feet, all triple layer, so, the total glass used is about three times [that], about 318,000 square feet." Interpane Glas of Germany manufactured the glass, which features its Ipasol Bright White coating on #2 and #3 surfaces.

"The nature of the new design of the pedestal is to maintain in David Child's intention," Lewis says. Childs designed the original prismatic glass base of the tower. "We wanted to make it reflecting and refracting, in a luminescent kind of way, with an active surface, depending on the angle you're looking at," Lewis says. "The 13-foot 3-inch fins open and close, and are nominally 24 inches in depth. The fins are all fixed, but depending on where the viewer sees the wall the surface appearance changes. From the corners they are flat, but they open up toward the center, from flat to 60 degrees. Near the bottom the glass is flat, but as it goes up, it also opens up and then closes as it meets the tower shaft creating continuity between the two surfaces..."

It's interesting because in that picture it looks like the base is now squared off completely forming a cube, instead of having the tapered octagonal edges that originally met at the start of the office floors.

I wonder how they'll get the corners to end up looking like that?

The base cladding will be a cube, the tapered octagon edges were scrapped.

There are little birds talking about how the erector is significantly behind on the ironworker benefits payment and that is causing some problems.

But this is hearsay, I have no evidence to corroborate this.

I find it hard to believe that the political nature of this project would allow it to get shut down.

Btw, awesome render Otie. Though I think they made a mistake making the cladding as they plan to make it. I think it would look far better if it were made from normal glass pannels all directly fused to the walls like in the case of the normal above base cladding :dunno:

The design and arrangement of the fins were done in such a way that "plays" with the rest of the building: at the center they'll "close" as much as 60 degrees, at the corners and the near bottom they'll open creating a flat surface, architects did this to create a transition between the base and the main facade. This test render should give you an idea, though the bottom is wrong, those panels should be almost completely flat:

That having been said, there must be zoning laws now to avoid free riders to build high enough to take advantage of the open line of sight offered in that area of manhattan.. Right?

It was open regularly, except for inclement weather (especially July 2000 when a storm rolled through the city and there were lightning bolts striking the antenna atop the North Tower). It was a pretty popular spot for weddings, and I agree, 1WTC should have an outdoor observation deck, but I don't see that happening. Maybe atop Tower 2 or 3, I could see that.

Is this an urban legend? Certainly the bedrock is farther down. But bedrock isn't needed to build skyscrapers. Modern piling can rely entirely on friction from the surrounding soil rather than sitting on top of a solid subterranean layer.

Deeper foundations do cost more but that cost wouldn't be prohibitive, especially when compared to all the other costs associated with building in manhattan.

My bet is that zoning restrictions are the reason. City planners try to factor in infrastructure and transportation capacities along with the obvious NIMBY issues.

The reason why SOM rejected an observatory platform at the parapet was not because of communication equipment risk, but rather the fact that this tower is self contained, 4 water cooling towers will be located at the roof; also, the window washing crane and its track will take hell alot of space.

It was historically the reason, hence the proliferation of skyscrapers in midtown and downtown - but better building technology has now surpassed this problem. This has allowed some tall buildings to be built within these districts already - such as the Trump Soho.

Topped out is when it has reached its full height both structurally and architecturally. Since this project has a spire it won't be topped until that is erected.

Hi all.

Hi Pat.

Topped out is when it has reached its full height both structurally and architecturally. Since this project has a spire it won't be topped until that is erected.

Ray, according to this (and any update I've ever seen about 1 WTC), topping out has always referred to the completion of the building to its roof height.

It's just semantics, though reaching the roof shouldn't be counted as topping out, since the mast is part of the building's integrity.

Hi all.

Ray, according to this (and any update I've ever seen about 1 WTC), topping out has always referred to the completion of the building to its roof height.

Hi Pat.

I am just referring to the CTBUH definition of topped out.
They use the same criteria for all tall structures.
Since this project has a spire and not an antennae, official top out is when the spire is up.

Quote from the council's site :

"A building is considered to be "Topped Out" when it is under construction, and has reached its full height both structurally and architecturally (e.g., including its spires, parapets, etc)."

Ray.

If things go as planned, Tishman will reach the rooftop parapet structure by April 2012. The mast is part of the building's integritiy, so topping-out should occur by late October 2012.

Any of you folks who is an expert on glass and physics, could you explain this rare phenomenon captured by the curtain wall? On some parts you can clearly see the reflection is higher than transparency, but in others (where the sun hits directly) transparency is quite notorius.

The explanation is high reflection of the concrete caused by the Sun. When the concrete is in the shadow there is nothing to reflect.
