Alan - Will there be more steel put in tomorrow or were those 17 the last ones? When will they raise the cocoon? Thanks for your answers in advance, it is great having you on this forum.

The last time I was in Lower Manhattan was in mid-December ... the tower had surpassed the 80th floor. I met a young couple from the west (Gulf) coast of Florida who just got married and it was their first time in NYC. We were chatting the graveyard of St. Paul's Chapel not two blocks from WTC1 admiring the construction. They were really impressed. They had never seen a building more than 25 or 30 stories tall - how high is the tallest building in Tampa? - and they were just "blown away"! When I told them the tower was going to add another 20 or more stories ... they could hardly believe it.

Myself, having been to NYC many times (I was born there) and also to Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, and other big cities ... I am a bit more jaded. Still I will say that no photograph does it justice, it really does soar and has a kind of gleaming mirror-like gorgeousness about it.

Thank you so much!, It sound's truly incredible!.

Black cladding wouldn't fit the aesthetic of the area at all IMO. It would make the tower stick out like a sore thumb amidst the other buildings, unlike how it is currently where it compliments the stylizations of its neighbors and nicely tapers to a centralized focus point.

I know the feeling, once you've seen the tallest in China and ME, this one seems almost quaint.

I've seen the SWFC in person, it didn't seem much more than this with another 200 feet or so stacked on, The Shanghai Tower and Burj Kalifa go way above 1WTC though, those would be something else to see.

Also, standing directly under a building is often the worst way to get a feel for it's size, ESB doesn't feel very big when you stand beneath it, but from a couple blocks away it feels huge.

If a building tapers (such as the ESB does), then you're right, standing directly under doesn't give a good feel for the size (mainly because you lose the top portion, which can't be viewed from below).

But boxes that don't taper (e.g., the original WTC towers) do appear huge when viewed from below, since you get the whole building in your view, from the very bottom to the very top.

Even though I saw them several times, I always felt amazed when standing right at the base of the Twin Towers and looking up.

I'll be curious to see what the new 1 WTC feels like from below, since depending on where you stand, you might not get the full effect (because of the tapered walls).

Yea but even from the street you can see up at least 1050 feet of ESB's facade, I remember Sears not even looking that big when right next to it, it wasn't until I was a block or so away that I realized how omnipresent it was. I think the new WTC will look very massive in person personally.

Trans. glass cladding is the best way to go. There are already many black boxes and we don't need more. The reflections of light make a glass building far more interesting to look at as the sun changes positions.

Not true. When i was 9, about 7 years ago i visited new york and standing looking right up under ESB scared the shit out of me. I had already seen willis tower and later cn tower and other north american skyscrapers but something out the empire state building made it seem so scary. It was amazing.

Althought the best moment ever was the first day of arriving in new york in a very foggy night we looked out our hotel window dissappionted we couldnt see empire state building(hotel right next to it) though we were on the wrong side of the hotel to see it. During the night my mum woke me up a told me to look out the window, the fog had cleared and it was spectatcular. sorry for going off topic

On Friday the cocoon should be jumped, weather permitting. I say that because winds this am were above 30mph when I got to site till about 10am, when they dropped cranes could then work. Today they got 51 pieces of perimeter spandrel / core beams erected.

Wow, a little off topic, but just going through pics of the memorial, it just feels so good to see people roaming around the WTC plaza again...even though the buildings aren't done yet and its still contained for a few more years...just seeing life back at the Trade Center is awesome...anyway thats my little rant lol...so glad to see steel rising again, I have faith we'll top out in mid to late April...I've been hearing a lot of people complaining again though on the floor count...I guess some don't realize that the twins weren't exactly 110 floors of office space either...8 were set aside for mechanical correct? Oh well who cares we still get a gorgeous new 1WTC!

The crane inspector got back to me and corrected the value, it is 307,900 lbs, so call it 154 tons , with no framing and no load. Sorry, I want to be accurate.

Thanks for that... that's a big base weight alone to hang off the side of a building.

It's White Plains, which is due north of Manhattan. New Rochelle and Stamford, Ct. Are northeast of Manhattan and are not visible from that perspective.

Yeah, I would think Cantor would find it virtually impossible to ever get any of their people to work at the WTC ever again... besides that, my understanding is that they relocated to midtown or elsewhere years ago in the post-9/11 months when they got their NYC office back up and running...

Wow great comparison! This will be a reality soon! The building will hopefully be topped out in April, and the spire will begin to be lifted on then. It really will be wonderful new skyline! It resembles the older classic ones like the Empire State building and Chrysler, but also looks sort of like the old North Tower, with its spire...My only regret is that there will not be an outdoor observation deck, but I can live with that. Once this building is finished, many are going to admire it.

Also, while it is true that 1wtc slightly tapers at top, I think visually, once all the cladding is on, and it is topped out, it will look much more streamlined from top to bottom than it does now, with only part of the glass on..It will look much taller than some think, I believe...Remember it is going to be the exact roof height as the old North Tower after all! :)

There is no way this building is topping out in April. Its already mid-Feb and even if we give it till the end of April, that is only 10 weeks.

This building will do a max of 1 floor per week, if that. I would say 1 floor every 2 weeks.

Currently it is at 92 floor to go to 106 floor.

With 14 floors to go, and 2 weeks per floor to top out.

That is 28 Weeks. Which means the building will top out either in late June or early July.

False, there no 94-99 floors, which technically means there is only about 6 more floors to go. If it does take 1 floor per 2 weeks, it would only take 12 weeks, 12 weeks from today will be in april.

The steel is up to floor 92 at the moment. Which leaves 9 floors left, plus 4 "fictional" levels (5 if you want to count the one there putting in the spire representing Floor 110 in honor of the Twins) after the parapet. Top out of the roof/parapet in April seems like a long shot. But doable if DCM gets its act together and the weather cooperates.

Here are the remaining floors and heights.

92M 1,194’ 8”
93 1,208’ 4”
93M 1,223’ 6”
100 1,240’
101 1,254’ 2”
102 1,266’ 8”
103 1,293’ 4”
104 1,313’ 10”
105 1,334’ 8” (roof)

Top of parapet 1,368’

106 catwalk
107-109 communication spires

Top of spire 1,776’

True, most of the mid and upper 90s floors are mechanical, and it may not take them as long to construct them...Will the parapet be installed at the same time as the topping out of the roof? Like in tandem with it? I know it will be awhile after the initial topping out before the spire is hoisted into place. Definately very excited, the topping out of this tower will be such a big milestone and a hopeful thing for so many who have wanted the skyline reclaimed! :)

I think if the steel reach the roof height they will first finish the core and maybe the cladding before they work on the spire.

I think the roof will be built out before the parapet but I could be wrong, I'm just speculating. I think it'll be interesting to see if they remove one or both of the cranes at the top to make way for the mech equipment and communications ring. Perhaps the climbing crane will lift the spire pieces. The roof will be pretty crowded with two cranes, mech equipment, the comms ring, etc.

I can't wait to see it played out.

I would think that they would have to remove the cranes on the roof or at least partially dissassemble them when the topping out happens, but I could be wrong..I wonder if when they have the topping out ceremony, they will actually be outside standing on the roof when the last bit of steel is hoisted. It definately will be a big day and I am excited for it.

They have to build the concrete roof slab before the TV mast can go up. Current plans call for part of the comm ring to go in once topped off and 1 crane to be removed and the other crane changed to platform to install TV mast. Crane will jack itself with sections added under cab, like conventional tower crane.

The steel is up to floor 92 at the moment. Which leaves 9 floors left, plus 4 "fictional" levels (5 if you want to count the one there putting in the spire representing Floor 110 in honor of the Twins) after the parapet. Top out of the roof/parapet in April seems like a long shot. But doable if DCM gets its act together and the weather cooperates.

Here are the remaining floors and heights.

92M 1,194’ 8”
93 1,208’ 4”
93M 1,223’ 6”
100 1,240’
101 1,254’ 2”
102 1,266’ 8”
103 1,293’ 4”
104 1,313’ 10”
105 1,334’ 8” (roof)

Top of parapet 1,368’

106 catwalk
107-109 communication spires

Top of spire 1,776’

What are the 4 fictional levels?

What are the 4 fictional levels?

106, 107, 108, and 109. They aren't really floors in the normal sense. Hence the term "levels".

I can't beleive it!
Somebody has even increased the floor count in the thread title, although the old value was already mutch too high. Don't you think, that we should put the correct information into the thread title, because otherwise we only fool ourselves? I mean, probably nobody here gets paid for doing that markting?!

Oh, I see. Do they house utilities or something?

Yes. I would presume equipment related for the antennae and broadcasting capabilities. So while not a true "floor" in the normal sense, there is some practical usage for them.

http://www.orf.at/stories/2101311/2101312/

Here the article in english, I don't know wher else can I give it, as in this thread.

Lid on and off

The bustling construction work on the former Ground Zero in Manhattan south hardly give the impression that the new New York's World Trade Center (WTC) will end in a disastrous fate. But the planned 80 floor high enough, skyscrapers Three World Trade Center is just before the freeze.

After the completion of the tower lobbies could once again be an end. As the New York business portal Crain's reported, will real estate developer Larry Silverstein to seven stories in the truest sense a lid put on the torso, because he can not find tenants for the proposed office tower. Appropriate adjustments were made for the ongoing construction obviously do.

Instead of the office tower designed by British architect Richard Rogers, which had to be completed this year, is now to develop a seven-story department store. Silverstein shows demonstratively optimistic that he still finds tenants. The time for him but it runs. His contract with the city stating that he demonstrate commitments and leases for 37,000 square feet in order for the public sector provides loan guarantees to build.

Potential tenants for the project are nowhere apparent, however, they say. It lies not in the building, but in the real estate market. The economic situation will ensure that companies currently have little appetite for expensive relocations and new luxury offices. If later, but still appear interested, Silverstein wants to remove the lid on the seventh floor again and put the missing 73 levels later.

Left of the original plans little
Silverstein is responsible for developing the new WTC, but the land belongs to the New York Port Authority (Port Authority). This ratio ensures years of tension. Of the original building plans and visions hardly anything is left, and even for ever and ever again trimmed versions so far, none were observed completion date.

Which has now become the project of One World Trade Center has about the original plans of the "Freedom Tower" by architect Daniel Libeskind barely resembled. The central project in the Port Authority WTC compound itself had usurped after Silverstein was able to show any progress. The New York Department acted here but not much more fortunate than themselves Silverstein

Costly planning errors
To make matters worse still an embarrassing last known design errors that could cost several million: Construction of the underground loading dock is not ready in time. Now the Port Authority to build five makeshift loading docks on the earth, that the tenant can ever bring their equipment in the 104 meter high skyscraper. The design error was apparently not noticed for years, and completion is delayed now, because there is a temporary station at the site of the trans-Hudson subway line.

The auditors of the firm Navigant Consulting now calculated that the cost of building the new World Trade Center already account for four billion dollars (3.04 billion euros) more than planned. In the report, the Port Authority called a "dysfunctional organization". New York's representatives had arranged the extraordinary audit, after the Port Authority wanted to fill the budget holes with increased bridge and tunnel tolls for the island of Manhattan.

Shady backgrounds of contracts
Although One World Trade Center was able to Conde Nast acquired as a major tenant after a long struggle of the publishing giant. The backgrounds are extremely opaque. New York is rumored to have the Port Authority, Conde Nast paid six to seven years' rent, so the company einmietet in the prestigious project. The fact is that instead of sitting, the Port Authority hoped for millions of revenue from rents due to the WTC project on a huge and ever-growing mountain of debt.

To the rest of the building there is not much better placed. With Seven World Trade Center before a planned total of seven buildings is completed. Only in the high-rises number one and four are relevant to construction progress. With the construction of high-rise number five has not even begun. Even the waiting 9/11-Museum - more than ten years after the terrorist attacks - still its completion.

Doesn't sound good

yeah, but you can't actually go into the torch. In fact, right now you can't even get to the crown. So unless this was taken by some NPS person or it is a web cam screen shot it is likely from an aircraft of some sort.

The safety regs have certainly saved a lot of lives, though at the cost of longer construction times and added cost. But in the end its worth it. In the book Men of Steel (http://www.amazon.com/Men-Steel-Story-Family-Center/dp/1400049504), it stated 17 people died during the construction of the original WTC. So far two people died building 7WTC and 2 firefighters in the Deutsche Bank Building fire/demolition.

Wow great renderings of the roof and parapet. The antenna is really going to set this building off when completed...Exactly how many feet is the parapet s from the glass wall tip to the actual building roof bottom? Looking at these pics, you can really see why they didn't put an observation deck up there, would be way too crowded with all that equipment!

Nope, not by a long shot. You can guess the topping out of the Roof, by looking at the 4 Triangles on the side of the Building. They all have to go to a direct point, so there's still a long way to go until it reaches roof height anyway.

True... and Tucson seems so little by comparison (and I grew up in Findlay Ohio, pop 38,000 surrounded by 30 miles of corn in every direction... Yeah, Findlay, the place in that Dominoes parmesan bites commercial... LOL)

And why do people drove so ridiculously slow in Tucson? All our main arterial roads in Phx are mostly 45 or 50 mph and everyone goes 60... in Tucson the roads are signed for 35 or 40 MPH and everyone drives 25... and there are endless traffic lights... grr...

I think that is his point, Phoenix is a giant suburb without a city. And you wouldn't pay 10 cents for parking because it is subsidized. Not so in Manhattan, no ridiculous parking requirements.

I still think after the building opens and starts bringing in major tourist dollars, from people visiting the observation deck and the site in general, that they might change their minds and put a restaurant up at the top of the tower. I think it would easily turn a profit given how many people are sure to be visiting the new tower!

I agree, the original Windows on the World was apparently the most profitable restaurant in the entire United States during its final year of operation prior to 9/11... I am shocked someone has not already set up a restaurant lease in the new WTC... I think the original windows was making something like $35 million a year or so... I would imagine a new Windows on the World would do just as well if not better given the increased tourist draw of the new WTC with the Memorial, upcoming museum (someday?) and the general draw of it being the WTC...

bgdrewsif, I think probably there are people/investors out there very eager to want to have a restaurant at the top of the new tower, but they are just sort of hanging back now waiting until the building gets built and seeing what kind of attraction it really is. My gut tells me that because of what happened on 9/11, the way we lost the twin towers, and the big draw the new 1wtc tower will be due to the site, and the incredible views of the city it will offer, that a restaurant of some kind will surely be put up there in a few years, maybe sooner. It might not be called "Windows on the World", but maybe something else...At any rate, I think this building is going to be a tourist draw the likes of which we haven't seen much in this country before, because of the entire site, and because it will offer those views from 1,300 feet up that noone has been able to enjoy since we lost the twin towers. Just a hunch on my part, maybe i am being overly optimistic, but I really feel the new tower is going to draw people in from all over once it is finished.

Don't forget that even though Windows on the World made the most money out of any restaurant in 2000, it made that money at a loss. Consider that before speculating about the possibility of a restaurant in 1WTC.

I agree with your assessment completely... :) And hope you are right... NY and the World deserves the new WTC to be a HUGE success...

Completely agree. A meal and the best view in the city is something worth mine (and I'm sure many others) money. Would definitely bring in a lot of people if you ask me. I think if it does eventually open, it should be called Windows on the World. It seems fitting for it to have the same name.

Yeah, I am an optimist and I think the new 1wtc is going to represent so much when it's finished. It will offer those amazing panoramic views of the city and the memorial below. People are now really noticing it rising in the skyline. When it's topped out, and especially after the spire is put on, it's really going to amaze people I think. And just like tourists once came to the twin towers, they will now come to the new tower and also the memorial plaza. The new tower will probably make a lot of its money from the tourism. Many people, especially those who visited the towers before 9/11, like myself, want to visit and re-live the experience. You can bet the city will market the tower as a tourist attraction too since it will be the tallest in town. It will be on every brochure, tourist guide, etc. If they do put a restaurant up near the top one day, I would be fine with it being called Windows on the World again. Either way, 1wtc is going to be a major attraction in New York in the near future! :)

Nine floors remain, plus a handful of levels in the communications ring and spire.

Core columns are being installed as we speak. They go up to the 93rd floor so around 1210 ft. Otie could give the exact height.
