Core columns are being installed as we speak. They go up to the 93rd floor so around 1210 ft. Otie could give the exact height.

Wow, 93rd floor. Just a few more to go! Do you think that they will hold off on putting anymore glass until the steel tops out?

Nah. That would mean a total of about 3 or 4 months of no new glass, and I'm certain that won't happen. Though I do wish they'd pick it up just a little.

Curtain wall should restart mid march, it is stopped because fireproofing is stopped rather than heat the building, you can't count on every day being nice spring day in the winter. Patience, it will all start again soon.

That's definitely true. In my opinion One WTC is a very beautiful and unique building that surely affects the atmosphere of New York, but it's not a landmark exceeding the old WTCs. Definitely not.

1 World Trade Center as well as the whole site in general is a much more significant Landmark now, if only for the reason it is being created. But you are entitled to your opinion.

After what happened on 9/11/2001, it's better to have a new landmark than none at all.

Because of what they did? You mean, years of planning, rebuilding everything not just only from scratch but having in mind what happened there and trying to honor those who died with a beautiful memorial, at the same time building five major office towers, all of the infrastructure for the site and a transportation hub, all of this happening around a working subway station? When I see what was left of the WTC days after 9/11 I don't even know how they got where they are today. We only see what's above ground and the towers rising, but the amount of work being done underground... wow.
Those Dubai projects are s**t compared to this. :)

The second ESB observation deck has already been surpassed by Tower One because the core steel is at the 93rd floor (1,208' 4") so I guess add 8 feet for the splice and you get about 1,216'. The ESB Indoor Observation Deck is 1,212' while others tend to think it's at 1,224' but really it isn't, the observation platform above it is.

1WTC = 371 meters or 1216 feet out of 418 meters or 1371 feet
4WTC = Approximately 244 meters or 801 feet out of 298 meters or 977 feet
157 = 199 meters or 654 feet out of 306 meters or 1005 feet

Rep. Grimm Applauds PANYNJ’s Decision to Light One WTC in Red for Cardinal Dolan

PA steps up to honor a hometown hero, after Empire State Building denies the request

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Rep. Michael G. Grimm (R,C-S.I./Brooklyn) applauded the decision of the Port Authority’s Executive Director Patrick Foye to light One World Trade Center in red to honor the elevation of Archbishop Dolan to cardinal. After Rep. Grimm’s request to light up the Empire State Building - which is traditionally lit to honor various causes and individuals - was denied yesterday by the building’s Lighting Partner Committee, the congressman made a similar request to the Port Authority. The Port Authority has agreed to light One World Trade Center – at no cost to the agency - beginning tonight, February 24th, for one week.

“Giving up is not in my DNA. Where there is a will there is a way, and One WTC is even more appropriate as a symbol of hope, courage and the bright future of New York, all of which Cardinal Dolan exemplifies,” said Grimm. “I applaud the Port Authority’s decision to step up and honor our hometown hero by lighting One Word Trade Center in cardinal red. This illumination will not just serve as a celebration of Cardinal Dolan, but of all our city’s heroes. It is an opportunity for all of us to honor the lives and bravery of those we lost, and to show our pride for a local leader who has given so much to the people of New York with his faith and charity.”

Upon its completion, One World Trade Center will become the tallest building in New York City, standing at 1,776 feet. It will have a public observation deck on the 100th and 101st floors for all to enjoy the view of city. The building’s construction has been moving at a pace of about a floor a week, and the steel construction has been completed to the 92nd floor as of today.

The dirty which would really worth to be cleaned is the one in the WTC's cladding, but the pouring rain is not giving truce.

So this has probably been asked before, but just curious, exactly what type of structure is 1wtc? I know the old twin towers were tubular, and their strength came from the outside columns which acted as bracers, like a stick of celery. The old towers got most of their strength from the outside columns, and did not have many interior columns so as to free up more office space..1wtc looks to have an-all glass facade. Does it have a rigid steel skeleton as well, I know it has strong interior concrete reinforced columns and beams? I heard somewhere that 1wtc's exterior facade is merely superficial, that it gets its strength from the interior, unlike in the old twin towers. Is this more akin to older skyscrapers like the ESB? Thanks.

What makes this building so immensely expensive is that it has been over designed in every possible aspect in order to allow it to withstand a future attack. So this building gets its strength from its massive inner concrete core, which you alluded to, and gets its strength from rigid structural steel outside of the core. Modern skyscrapers typically get most of their strength from a collection of rigid structural steel, and a more light weight inner core which is smaller than a traditional concrete core like there is in this building, the advantage is that the more light weight core frees up square feet which can they in turn be leased out.

So to answer your question more directly, this building was designed from the ground up to with stand a catastrophic structural failure of either its inner concrete core, or the rigid structural steel. So it's more of a hybrid than anything. It has a more traditional concrete core and has a more modern structural element of rigid interconnected steel. Both in their current design are not necessary to keep 1 WTC up, but again, it's been designed to withstand severe attacks and immense amount of damage, so that a potential failure of one structural element will not be catastrophic. So yeah, it's more like older skyscrapers, with giant inner cores, and rigid, load bearing structural steel.

Hope that helps.

It'd be awesome if they had an underground mall like at the old WTC. I know if they did that they would have to work around the Memorial and the Transit Hub, but it would still be a cool addition.

it definitely has an underground mall, the Port Authority just did a deal with Westfield who will manage it. Go look at www.wtcprogress.com and retail and the press releases.

Correct... they wanted to have the Empire State Building go red but they declined so the PA agreed to have the WTC go red for one week in honor of Dolan's being promoted to Cardinal...

By roof height 1WTC is atm the 3rd tallest in the US after ESB and Willis Tower and when completed it will be the 2nd tallest after Willis Tower

As to the structure of 1WTC, from what I know it is quite unique. It is a core/tube structure like the old Twins and not like ESB, which is a grid structure, but it is hugely different compared to the Twins. The Twins didn't use any concrete and relied heavily on their perimeter columns while having core columns as well so the load was quite balanced out. 1WTC on the other hand relies solely on it's gigantic steel/concrete core with having only as many perimeter columns as is needed to hold the floors. 1WTC has a vastly superior structural design to anything ever seen before. It's massive core is incredibly strong, made outta the strongest concrete known to man and unlike the Twins, 1WTC is also fire resistant. Also, the connections between the floor beams and the core are very strong too to prevent a situation of the outer structure collapsing while the core remains intact. If I have forgotten of anything or said something inaccurately please correct me folks

Yes. I totaly agree with you, Kanto. I think, that 1WTC is more coole and unique that willis tower. And in general, the World Trade Center is worthy decoration of Manhattan.

I remember the 1993 attacks like yesterday, i was in my sophomore year of high school i remember Turning on the tv and none of the channels where working and then turn on the radio and that's when i herd about the attacks.

The events of the '93 attack will always make us remember how unsuccessful the terrorists were and that it was just 6 people that perished. I remember those days when only the first bombing happened and people wondered if the Towers would get attacked again. That's why Tower One had to be built above standards at the base to prevent something like a stupid truck bomb from ever causing destruction again.

Yes we cannot forget the 1993 terrorist attack 19 years ago today, on Feb. 26, 1993. The terrorists planned to topple one of the towers into the other, but thankfully they didn't succeed. Unfortunately, 6 innocent people died that day. All they did was go to work, and never came home. If something good came out of the 93 attack, it perhaps raised awareness about evacuation in the towers, and hopefully saved some lives on 9/11. The 1993 victims are as follows:

Monica Smith, age 35
Robert (Bob) Kirkpatrick, age 61
Bill Macko, age 47
Stephen Knapp, age 48
John DiGiovanni, age 45
Wilfredo Mercado, age 37

The 1993 WTC bombing victims' names are displayed in bronze alongside the thousands of other 9/11 victims in the Memorial Plaza. May we never forget, and NEVER let it happen again.

And what is this, 2002? Do people really have a problem loading that many images?

Obviously old renders, but there is otherwise no official information that I'm aware of or have been able to find.

I asked the PA project team and I was told horizontal only. Think lighthouse beacon.

Keep the photos coming Kanto! Whether they are in 1 post or not keep them coming. To the ones who find when he puts them in the one post annoying get a stressball or build a bridge and get over it! Life is too short to get yourself worked up over picky insignificant little things like this and if you can't get past it get off SSC.

The tower is looking more amazing everyday! I know from the other side of the globe you have me jealous :)

Thanks for the info. A light house beacon would look pretty sick (talk about Babylon A.D. ha?), but I kind of wish the beam would be vertical too. Because that way it would be possible to recognize NY from very far away...

Considering this gigantic speed increase and the delays at 4WTC caused by the steel fall incident I have kinda like no doubt that 1WTC will top out to the roof earlier than 4WTC :banana2:

A horizontal light, like a beacon, I think, Is emblematic of what the Statue of Liberty stands for: a beckoning symbol lighting the way for those seeking a new life, a new world. I think it is appropriate aesthetically and symbolically.

It's been like that for quite a while. Another fun fact: the WFC's roofs are made of copper, and were brightly copper colored before they were oxidized (green).

Melb_SuperTall
February 29th, 2012, 07:22 AM
Hmm it would be good if as part of their renovation plans they could replace them with LED strips that change colour etc as its a bad look with all those blown bulbs and that is an interesting fact :O

I hope some major tenants are found for the other buildings soon... I wonder if they have approached any of the former tenants of the two towers? I know they have all moved to new offices etc and are probably reluctant to return but you never know. They should approach them even if they aren't looking for space and say the WTC wants you back.

Hi!

Very nice photos!!

I'm french and I will be visiting NYC from march 22 to march 29. (and I'm so excited !) It seems that the completion is coming.

Of course I guess that the building won't be completed at the end of march but do you think that the construction will reach the top during my stay?

I see new steel being raised. Kanto would you know the current height as of today?

The new perimeter columns didn't make a height jump because there already were core columns for that floor so the height is still 371 meters or 1216 feet

Jersey City owns. It has a front row seat to the most breathtaking urban landscape in existance, and looks pretty damn good itself to boot.

Nice modern light rail system you have over there in Jersey. I like the fact that, despite it's a modern state-of-the-art system the rail cars still use the traditional sounding "trolley bell". That's neat!!:cheers::cheers:

Went by the site today as I was on jury duty in lower Manhattan. It was cloudy and the cranes appeared to be not working but what a beehive of activity the place is. There is work going on every where and even the noise is quite impressive. There was particularly a lot of work on WTC 2 and WTC 3. Lots of concrete mixing trucks down there pouring concrete.

I know it is not easy for many readers here to visit the site but if you want to see it at the peak of its activity and can get here I think right now and this spring is an awesome time to visit. You gotta love more than a dozen large cranes on a site all in action at the same time :-)

Kanto, if you are going to type this:
"As do I... yes we all greatly miss the old WTC... but what is replacing them is in almost every sense superior to what was lost (physical nope, safety yup, engineering yup, aesthetics nope, integration into surrounding community nope and street grid yup, environmental impact yup)"

I think it fair to know why you do not feel that the new WTC will not be physically superior, aesthetically superior, or better integrated into the surrounding community than the old WTC?

As I see it, the new WTC buildings are airier, roomier, let in far more natural light, and provide much better comforts for building occupants (some of the office photos I have seen from the original towers are downright claustrophobic and dire looking). From the outside the entire complex is covered in glass and beautifully reflects the lights and skyline of neighboring buildings and even Jersey City is clearly reflected in the almost mirror-like finish of 4WTC in many photos I have seen... The old towers, while they had become familiar landmark, were in many ways a brutalist appendage upon the base of Manhattan and buildings 3 (hotel) and 4, 5, 6, and tower 7 were hardly renowned as attractive or memorable architectural works from an aesthetic standpoint compared to the new Towers 1, 2, 3, 4, the museum pavilion, and the Calatrava-designed transit hall which are generally beautiful and shimmering structures even if towers 3 and 4 are not 'revolutionary' in their overall structural designs...

And the new WTC complex reintegrated the street plan of lower Manhattan that the local community desperately wanted (particularly the new building 7 vs the footprint of the old building 7 which cut off lower Manhattan from the rest of the city's streets and views). The new complex provides the memorial complex and hundreds of trees, grasses, waterfalls, and accompanying wildlife (birds and squirrels and whatnot) compared to the brutalist and stark concrete expanse that was the former Austin J. Tobin Plaza that was almost universally regarded as a barren expanse of concrete despite continual efforts to 'liven' it with planters, benches, speakers, and the occasional concert stages and performances... Can you honestly support the argument that Tobin Plaza was better for New York and the Lower Manhattan community that that memorial site and its landscapes?

The last 10 years have been a continual give and take process between the residents, the developers, and governments but I think its is generally accepted that what has emerged as a result of this messy democratic process greatly exceeds what was destroyed (not including lives lost, only the site itself). The original WTC was a monument to eminent domain, government assert its unwelcome will upon the community, and a project without long-term vision... The new WTC is a case study in negotiation, community input from thousands of stockholders, long-term legacy planning, environmental planning and design, etc.

I am not one of those stakeholders... I have only been through JFK twice in the spring and summer of 2004 (which was an awful and shocking experience both times, Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport has been ranked 'America's Friendliest Airport' for numerous consecutive years, a title I cannot imagine JFK getting anytime soon...) so I freely grant to all that my knowledge of the new and old WTC is of an outsider... but based on all that I have seen, read, and researched I cannot imagine how the old WTC could in any objective sense be better that its successor complex...

So, Kanto, my response tries to take some time to thoughtfully argue and support my views in a manner more detailed than 'yup' or 'nope' and I do hope your response will be more involved also... I promise not to get into some silly shouting match as too many on here do since I really have no personal stake in this, I dont live in NY, never visited there, and aside from hoping to see the WTC someday I have no other desire to go to NY... I just wish to hear how others would respond to and defend the opposite perspective on this... Thank you!

I'm really not interested in discussing the merits of the old WTC vs the New, because this thread isn't the place for it, but I'll go ahead and oblige the above.

I agree that removing the street grid back in the 1960s was a bad idea, and disrupted the traffic flow of Manhattan, however, the Tobin Plaza did have it's own merit.

Having the site on it's own superblock led to a sort of "urban tranquility". I say this as someone who worked in the towers for four years and often spent my lunches eating in the plaza, watching throngs of goofy tourists bending their necks to take in the tall spectacle before them; outdated clothes, haircuts, fanny packs, polaroids, and all. It was a really nice place to people watch, eat lunch, and take in beautiful NYC summer days. Because it had no vehicular traffic going through it, it was rather calm and dare I say even peaceful compared to the streets immediately adjacent to the site; an urban respite. Granted, it was no Central Park, but it was still a nice relaxing place, not perfect, but it was something. The only big gripe I had with the plaza was it could get really windy, especially at the base of the towers.

While I think the new memorial plaza will be an aesthetic improvement over the original, I'll still always have fond memories of the original.

Hell, I met the woman who is now my wife in the Tobin Plaza in July 2000, that alone was enough for me.

No offense intended, but unless you experienced the first one, I really don't think you're in a position to talk about the original. Sorry if I offended your sensibilities, but that's just the way I feel.

Not at all offended :-) As I said openly, I have never been to Manhattan before, and freely admit I have no strong, visceral reaction to lambast or defend the complex or city either way... Having grown up in Ohio, and now living in Phoenix (with a semester in central London and 8 months teaching in Abu Dhabi in there somewhere), my concept of the world is invariably different than those of New Yorkers... I don't think I would mentally last more than a few hours in a place like Manhattan with the crowded streets, all the people, noise, traffic, etc. but that does not lessen my intrigue and fascination of a place like NYC...

On the contrary, I enjoyed your anecdote about the old WTC and the 'tranquility' and 'respite' you found there... a concept I would not have though of, thank you! :)

Haha awesome. I wasn't trying to flame you or anything, I just felt like the tranquil aspect of the Tobin Plaza had to be explained. Because it's an aspect of the old WTC that gets overlooked. Yeah, it wasn't pretty, yeah it was windy, but it was a great place, and I miss it.

Posted by lofter1 at WNY, (we had been told the podium glass wouldn't start till early 2013, maybe things have changed?),

"From the March 2012 PANYNJ WTC Progress Report:

One World Trade Center’s Exterior
Shimmers with New Podium Wall Glass Panels

... Starting this month, the walls of the 186-foot-tall 1 WTC podium are being clad in vertical glass panels to create a dynamic exterior that will animate the ground level experience of the building for pedestrians.

More than 4,000 frosted glass fins, each measuring 13 feet 4 inches by two feet, are being specially created by the contractor Permasteelisa. The glass fins will attach to the exterior of the podium wall at varying angles to create a series of v-shaped wing effects along the building surface. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the v-shaped glass cladding pattern will provide needed ventilation for the mechanical systems within the podium— including a 1.2-megawatt, next-generation fuel-cell plant housed above the lobby.

One WTC uses a new form of high- performance, low-emittance (low-E) glass coating technology on its glass panels to maximize sunlight and minimize heat gain within the building. This glass coating is also reflective, creating a shimmering effect on the building’s surface. In addition, the podium wall will use concealed energy-efficient LEDs to create a soft exterior glow.

The podium cladding installation is a critical element of 1 WTC’s aesthetic. The tower is scheduled to top off at 104 floors and 1,776 feet above street level (including its spire). Upon completion of its exterior structure this year, 1 WTC will be the tallest skyscraper in the United States ...

• The podium’s new glass panels reflect, refract, and transmit light much like the water cascading in the nearby memorial pools.

• The low-emittance (low-E) coatings on 1 WTC’s glass panels are microscopically thin layers of metal or metallic oxide that block the transfer of heat from sunlight through the window. Though made of metal, these layers are virtually invisible."

I recall the original Oct '08 PA schedule stated it would take about six months to install the podium glass. I don't know if that schedule applys here. But I do think it will take longer than two months.

From the wall street journal tonight

WTC Tower Seeks Radio, TV Signals . By ELIOT BROWN A battle is brewing for the airwaves over Manhattan.

The owners of One World Trade Center are planning to install a broadcast antenna in the 1776-foot building's spire in a bid to lure some of the more than two dozen television and radio stations currently broadcasting from the Empire State Building.

The move—reviving an earlier broadcast plan that was dropped out of financial concerns—would inject some competition into the skies for the Empire State Building, which since the collapse of the original World Trade Center towers in 2001 has been the go-to broadcast site in the city.

One World Trade Center site
."Our expectations would be to become the premiere broadcast facility in New York City," said Thomas Bow, senior vice president at the Durst Organization, the development firm that controls One World Trade in a partnership with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The building, currently under construction, is slated for completion at the end of 2013.

A spokesman for Malkin Holdings, an owner of the Empire State Building, declined to comment.

The Durst Organization expects to be able to take in about $10 million a year in rents and fees from television and radio stations drawn to the tower, the company said.

That is compared with the $16.1 million the Empire State Building generated from broadcasters in 2010, according to a securities filing. The only other main competitor is 4 Times Square, which is owned by the Durst Organization and primarily serves as a backup location for broadcasters, and would offer itself as a backup under the new broadcast plan.

The plan, which came after Durst Organization executives pitched the Port Authority on the idea, calls for other changes to the planned 408-foot spire on top of One Trade Center. Its architectural cone would be stripped away, putting in place a thinner, more functional spire that the Durst Organization said would save about $20 million.

The revision, however, drew criticism from the building's architect, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, people familiar with the matter said.

Under the agreement, Durst will put up the approximately $7 million of infrastructure and about $20 million of costs to build out the broadcast space for tenants, the company said. The proceeds would be split between the two owners, although Mr. Bow declined to give specifics.

The Port Authority pulled back from that route three years ago when it became concerned with putting in more money into the tower and the agency began worried that there wouldn't be enough interest from broadcasters.

Their redesigning the spire. It will be thinner, perhaps more antennae-like than an actual spire. Though I'm sure they'll still call it a spire to ensure the official height of 1,776 feet.

Yeah, basically what HK. If this deal goes through 1 WTC will have a a Conde Nest-esque antenna on top, like what is pictured. What would be cancelled would be the outer casing, which hides the hideous antenna, not the actual antenna/spire.

Durst are not the experts, so they should listen to SOM on this one. Hopefully SOM can convince them otherwise because, sticking a Conde Nest antenna on top of a really sleek looking tower would simply ruin 1 WTC. No other way around it.

This news is a travesty for 1wtc if it turns out to happen. This BAD news about the spire change, if it pans out, is quite simply WHY the United States is now second to the Arab and Chinese dictatorships in supertall construction and design. We are always designing down, instead of designing up! Geez, are times really that horrible that they can't even follow through with SOM's design? And this of all buildings?! Furthermore, 1WTC is NOT, I repeat NOT a twin of the old twin towers. It tapers as it rises, so the spire as designed would give it balance and just visually frame the tower so much better! If they actually change the spire to a bland, basic antenna, then the building simply will not have the impact it might have otherwise had.

Yeah, a simple antenna might have worked on the old North Tower, but it did not taper and so visually did not need a fatter spire like this one does. I REALLY hope they don't change the design, the spire would be such a focal point and architectural element of the building. The parapet would even look silly if they change the spire to a skinny toothpick sticking up there. The parapet as designed would cap off the building, help visually frame the tower. I just wish people in this country would stop constantly trying to change and mess up perfectly good designs. I guess there is nothing we can do but hope SOM convinces Durst to change their minds.
