Whoa! The lightning rod is 11 feet tall! That's insane. I bet being the tallest building in the area by far, that this building will get hit by lightning quite often.

Spires are counted in final hight, so yes this will be the tallest in the USA. :)

Willis tower will be the tallest tower in my eyes because you can build a building who is 1000 feet tall and then take a spire whi is also 1000 feet tall and then you have a "skyscraper" who is 2000 feet tall over 600 meters in height, but only 300 meters in office floors.

I don't like that 1wtc is called tallest because it has the same height as the old wtc one was 415 meters and the other was 417 meters tall. It is a nice building but not superior the old ones.

it isn't a huge difference in height its Willis tower is only 83 feet taller not so much of a huge difference and if you measure 1wtc by the communication ring its only a mere 50 feet

Yeah sure, 1WTC is just another plain filler.

The new 1WTC is better than the old one in so many ways:
- safer (safest supertall on earth)
- taller
- more environmentally friendly (LEED...)
- more beautiful
- more aesthetically pleasing
- more interesting geometrical form
- and what not...

I like this Tower but the roof should have at least passed Willis Tower's. It's not even that far off but I feel the whole 1,368' figure is pointless because that is just the parapet height, the roof is actually only 1,334' 8". Plus they'll be nothing but mechanical equipment up there anyway so the public will never be able to go up to that height since they scrapped the outdoor observation deck proposal. 1 WTC won't be the tallest building in the country by much. Since this is just one tower they should have went a bit higher w the roof, perhaps 1,500' or something like that. Screw the FAA, the antenna should have exceeded 2,000'. The 1,776' figure is also pointless because it won't be exactly 1,776' plus the Freedom Tower name was scrapped anyway. The Port Authority & Durst should not be the ones in charge of this Tower.

Thats your opinion not mine, every one dosen't think that. Chabourne & Parke WTC deal is ‘dead’ (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/chabourne_parke_wtc_deal_is_dead_0Ui2O7VSe66AQXXay4rA7L?utm_medium=rss&utm_content=Business)

"Closely watched talks for law firm Chadbourne & Parke to move to 1 World Trade Center cratered yesterday, leaving followers of both downtown and the legal landscape scratching their heads.

Chadbourne abruptly informed 1 WTC’s owners, the Port Authority and the Durst Organization, that the deal was dead — “as in dead, not a negotiating posture,” an informed insider said.

“They will not be going there.”

The reversal was surprising because the clock’s ticking on Chadbourne, which must leave behind 300,000 square feet at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in 2014, when Deloitte will take its space.

A relocation to 1 WTC — future home to Condé Nast — seemed like a sure bet when the New York Times reported on Jan. 26 that the tower was “set” to sign the law firm.

But a few weeks later, The Post cautioned that Chadbourne had yet to sign a term sheet.

Reps for the PA and Durst declined to comment yesterday, as did Chadbourne’s broker, Newmark Knight Frank’s Moshe Sukenik.

Chadbourne would have added 200,000 square feet to the total 1.37 million square feet already leased to private-sector firms at the 3.05 million square-foot tower.

The iconic skyscraper, represented by Cushman & Wakefield, will get by without Chadbourne. But it marks the latest damper on real estate industry claims that law firms are aggressively on the move.

Chadbourne is the third firm to recently back out of talks. Mayer, Brown changed its mind about Boston Properties’ 250 W. 55th St. And as The Post reported, Morgan, Lewis, after kicking the tires at several addresses, decided to renew its lease at Peter Kalikow’s 101 Park Ave."

The first three points are facts (safer, taller and more environmentally friendly), not opinion.
And the rest: to each his own. :cheers2:

I myself visited New York a week ago and saw the tower up close... and to tell you the truth there's nothing "special" in the design.... it is modern, yes, but that doesn't mean its immediately pleasing to the eye or the most beautiful tower in downtown... in fact, I think I'd prefer the older gothic styled towers to this one, since, for the time they were built, they were exceptionally tall, and also well designed and creative... I think WTC 1 has gotten much less character than what it deserves for being NY's symbol of rebuilding... and now they want to make the spire thinner and simpler!!! In short, I think everyone expects more from a building designed to replace the reknown Twin Towers.

You cannot pass judgment on this tower until you have seen it with its completed spire/antenna and completed base. It's simply far too early for pessimism like this.

Is it only me or is it insane how small the footprint of 1WTC is alongside the Barclay-vessey and WFCs. In that picture it almost looks like someone just put the WTC down in its spot whereas the WFC looks established. I'm not sure if my point is clear, but I actually do like how slender and tall it's starting to look.

MusicMan84

The fact is that there will always be differing opinions on this tower, because of the historical and emotional implications it will always carry. The fact is that there will always be people and groups of people who want something different from what it is. The varying expectations mean that not everyone can be pleased. I, for one, quite enjoy the design - and I don't envy the task of trying to meet the various expectations people have for this place.

Totally AGREE WITH YOU SIR. I visit New York in christmas and I think it is a nice building sure, but the old ones was just majestic. They dominated so hard the skyline. I wanted to see two freedom towers so to speak and they would have been 1776 feet tall in office hight not spire-hight:banana:. The spire can be 1000 feet tall I still count the roof as the final hight.

Run on sentence much? Anyway:

They weren't bland at all; they were interesting to look at, and were a byproduct of the era they came from; an era that emphasized functionality over aesthetics. And they did what they were designed to do beautifully; large, open office floors without columns. Sure, it wasn't going to win the Pritzker Prize, but it was built with a purpose, and it accomplished what it was built to do.

I don't see those buildings through nostalgic eyes, I see them through the eyes of a New Yorker. They were the pillars of the Manhattan skyline, and though we can't have them back, they'll always be the first thing I think of when I look towards the city.

I will say, though, that the new WTC is a definite improvement over the old, especially with the running of the streets back through the site, and an overall more modern, humanizing look.

I agree, everyone has there own opinions. I miss the old WTC, but please, stop depressing everyone and bringing the new WTC down. The new WTC is grand, some people hate the old, some hate the new, however it's about looking forward and not in the past.

Bringing the old ones back would give us the image of that very day, every day, we need to move on into the future, this new design is modern, it's a structure that fit's into today's society, and the future society.

Please take your thoughts elsewhere we need to concentrate on the building of the WTC, not arguing about which one is better, and why, especially considering it hasn't even finished, nor has then entire center!. When 2WTC comes up and there's two huge buildings almost the same as the original, and 3 WTC is up and all is don,e you may change your mind ...

Haha it is pretty dreadful, firstly the Riverside Cathedral is grossly exaggerated height wise, secondly, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine is like 5 blocks away and it is a much bigger church and much bigger tourist attraction, I realize it's harder to see from a cruise, but I'd advertise that one.

ANYWAY, advertising the WTC feels a bit premature, but I guess marketing is marketing.

sidenote: I love how all the buildings are built on grass haha. It's like New York is a newly discovered place, and they just decided to build right on the prairie.

In many ways it is, but not taller. Same height. In my mind, I don't include the spire, because it is not accesible to the public, unlike the Empire State Building. One way the originals were better, not to harp and stray off the subject matter, nor lament, was the observation deck on the rooftop, and the restaraunt. That being said, I'm going to be expecting something spectacular on that observation deck, inside there, that is yet to be determined, but something spectacular. Something Blockbuster. Something breathtaking. Hear that Silverstein? Hear that, Port Authority?, and/or whoever else is involved in this?

^, I agree let's please stay on topic. Regardless this Tower is an incredible building, and will become an iconic icon.

Don't judge until the entire complex has been finished. I think your perspectives will change once 2 WTC is up, and there is 2 400M + Building's there, which I'm sure will look amazing, and also 3 WTC, 4 WTC, Transit Hub, 2 Fountains and Museum and all. :)

Amen!

Hope they put up more cladding. It's really hard to appreciate it's height when all you see is hundreds of feet of black net. I see this everyday at work in TriBeCa, and you feel like theres no movement at all - although there is

Hendycfc
March 22nd, 2012, 06:58 PM
In many ways it is, but not taller. Same height. In my mind, I don't include the spire, because it is not accesible to the public, unlike the Empire State Building. One way the originals were better, not to harp and stray off the subject matter, nor lament, was the observation deck on the rooftop, and the restaraunt. That being said, I'm going to be expecting something spectacular on that observation deck, inside there, that is yet to be determined, but something breathtaking. Something Blockbuster. Something breathtaking. Hear that Silverstein? Hear that, Port Authority?, and/or whoever else is involved in this?

It does have a taller roof height by like 14 metres.

To ZZ-II, with all of the commemerative numbers such as 1776 height for Declaration of Independence, 1368ft roof height, 110 for the floor count and 200ft width which also reflects the North Tower, it would be lovely to have a further commemorative number to carry on the legacy? Additionally I'd love to visit in the Spring next year knowing it would be open to go up to the observation deck. Forgive me if any of my figures aren't true. Kind regards.

Well from the second picture by ChiSkyline's Renderings above, the sides seem to be lightened, because they have this blue effect to them, not sure what that is about but, and in the day light will reflect from them, the entire building will shimmer and reflect, it will be incredible! :)

Thought I should show everyone this! Although everyone thinks the economy sucks, many cities are starting construction comebacks in the US. And unsurprisingly NYC is #1 with 17.2 billion dollars in construction starts. That is about 7 billion dollars over #2 on the list, Dallas Fort Worth. Things are looking good for NYC!

I like all the other renders, amazing find. And this picture is amazing! Can't wait for the trans-hub to rise. But One thing that disgusts me is the surface lot! Why the hell would we make surface lots in Manhattan on the site of the former WTC? That's 20 steps backwards. Make an underground parking garage, ban cars, do whatever you have to do to not waste space on an ugly surface lot.

Actually, that slideshow shows us down dramatically from last year, and even below '09.

Still far ahead of others, but not exactly a banner year.

I had a feeling someone was going to make this comment. As someone else said that isn't the WTC site, plus that's is not what that stretch of street looks like at all. It almost looks like they completely removed the Millennium Hotel from that render. If you Googlemap it the intersection is Fulton and Church, and the block has a loading bay that you can see on Fulton St, but nothing like the size that's depicted.

In reality, the loading bay really only extends to the first car on the left in the render, and all the other parked cars on that block would in reality be either in the lobby of the Hotel, on the sidewalk, or half in the hotel and half out.

I imagine they did that because if they used the actual street scape a chunk of the Transit Hub would be obscured, and that is a really good angle. But yeah, if you stood in that spot, that's not what you would see at all, you'd at least partially be looking at the back of a hotel lobby. There is no parking lot there. They just put it there so there wouldn't be anything obscuring the view of the Transit Hub.

Thanks so much for clearing that up! Had I known this was supposed to be Church and Fulton it would've made sense that it's not this big. I always g down there, and never really even noticed the loading dock. For some reason I thought this was going to be a parking lot at the Vehicle Security Center. But now knowing that they just made it bigger to add to how much you saw, I'm much happier. Once again, thanks for clearing that up! I remember when I used to go down to the WTC site and there were surface lots everwhere, heck the new goldman sachs HQ was a surface lot before that building. Glad to see they aren't reverting to that again.

Power System Switched on at WTC
Workers switched on a massive power system at the site TuesdayTuesday, Mar 27, 2012 | Updated 2:21 PM EDT

"The slow but steady march to rebuild the World Trade Center in New York has reached another milestone.

Workers switched on a massive power system at the site Tuesday. It eventually will provide electricity to the center's signature skyscraper, a transit hub and the 9/11 memorial and museum.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the system of electrical feeders will supply 100 megawatts to the site.

That's enough juice to power 64,000 typical New York City apartments.

The unfinished One World Trade Center is now one of the city's tallest structures.

If construction continues at its current pace, it will pass the Empire State Building sometime this spring."

It's not supposed to stay the tallest forever, 432 Park Avenue is a proposed supertall that should be taller when build. Look at the Chrysler Building, it was the highest in NYC when build but was overtaken by the ESB within a year.

An office with a view (http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/2012/03/27/an-office-with-a-view/)
By Lucas Jackson MARCH 26, 2012

http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS6A.jpg
Everyone knows that moving into an office with a view is a sure sign of status at your job. If it’s a corner office with a view in two different directions you have managed to place yourself within the upper rungs of the corporate ladder. If your office has a 360 degree view of the financial capital of the world, New York City, you must be a legend. Or, you could be an ironworker putting together the iron skeleton of the new One World Trade in downtown Manhattan.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS6I600.jpg

One World Trade, previously known as the Freedom Tower, has in the last several years quietly grown taller and taller. Today it stands a few stories below being the tallest building in New York City. It is still rising too, at a rather rapid rate and after visiting the top floor I met first hand the group of dedicated ironworkers who are piecing it together, one bolt at a time.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS5X.jpg

Their commute to work is as vertical as ours is horizontal. Because the interior of the building is not yet finished, the quickest way to get to their workplace is via several different elevator systems and a couple of steel ladders. One external freight elevator (running express for the beginning of the daily shift and at lunch hours) took us to the 39th floor where one must catch another elevator that took us to within a couple stories of the top of the building. In this case it took us to roughly the 90th floor. Here we left the elevators behind and took two open steel ladders to the 92nd and 93rd floors where the steel skeleton of this building is being installed whenever the weather allows. One of these ladders is two stories tall and a little bit wobbly, it was climbing this ladder that I realized I am glad that I’m not afraid of heights.

On this clear Friday the weather on the ground was warm with a light breeze; up almost 1000 feet above the ground that small breeze was a little more intense and the temperature dropped accordingly. However, the view was incredible. At this height the building had risen far above any of its neighbors that either withstood or have risen since September 11, 2001. Unfortunately for the view, but for the very necessary reason of safety, there is plastic mesh surrounding these open floors to keep both workers and their equipment from falling off the side to cause chaos below. Even with this mesh the sense of height above the city is incredible and the view that you can see through the mesh is amazing.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS65.jpg

Inside this mesh a few dozen iron workers work busily to connect the beams that make up the massive iron infrastructure of the building together. Two cranes, whose massive bases take up almost the entire interior of the building, work in unison to lift the massive steel beams into place and to help make the minute adjustments to these beams that will allow the bolts that hold them together to be placed. The workers seem to have the balance of gymnasts as they move back and forth on the beams to both guide the beams that hang from the cable of the crane and then to come and attach them to the existing framework with large bolts and pointed wrenches. Safety is an obvious necessity at this height and when working with such heavy materials. Every worker in the air seems to have a partner below who is constantly watching to make sure that things look okay and everyone is strapped up, in some way or another, to the beams they sit, walk or stand upon.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS5R600.jpg

For me it was difficult to keep an eye on everything moving around all at once while photographing. The safety officers and representatives from the Port Authority who organized this trip helped to make sure that we did not stand below workers attaching bolts since we were standing two floors below them on the highest finished floor in the building. We also stayed away from the areas where the cranes were lifting and placing the steel beams and where the workers used ropes attached to the beams to guide them into place. The repercussions of being in the wrong place at the wrong time in that area were too dire for us to get near, mostly because no one wants to be in the way or to distract any of these workers while they move thousands of pounds of iron beams through the air.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS5F.jpg

It was a dream to photograph though. It was like a dance I didn’t know the steps to, but was mesmerizing to watch. Everything was as coordinated and precise as it could be when dealing with these beams. In the one hour we were able to spend up there it seemed as if half a dozen beams were attached. It was great watching one worker sit on top of a beam as he and another used a massive weight hanging from a crane to move the beam inches to the right so that the bolts would line up with the holes drilled for them. We were also lucky enough that one of the massive beams placed in the interior of the building to enhance the structural integrity was being guided into it’s final destination by an ironworker’s outstretched foot. It felt like another world to be up there.
http://blogs.reuters.com/photographers-blog/files/2012/03/RTR2ZS5K.jpg

The view, the height, and the magnitude of the building that these workers have built were all amazing to see firsthand. I took as many pictures as I could to try and show the difficulty of the work as well as the amazing visual scene it made when combined with the openness of the sky all around these men. It was exciting to take photographs that are now a part of the record of these workers and this building that they have built above the site known to most as “Ground Zero.” It was also exciting to see the inside of this building that is soon to become the highest in New York and will house thousands of workers in it’s future. I now feel connected to this building by seeing it’s skeleton, it’s hard iron soul, even though I was only there for an hour. I cannot imagine the pride and connection that the ironworkers must feel and I don’t think any of them are going to be able to keep a straight face when someone talks about “an office with a view.”

I wonder if a megatall would ever get built in New York. The Nimby power there says no.

I honestly dont think so. People wonder why Chicago gets 600m proposals all the time, its because of chicago having no zoning restrictions. Either way, I think Chicago and New York are equally beautiful, and I can't wait to see the freedom tower topped out, its a gorgeous building!

Er, Chicago has a very strict zoning code; one especially intricate layer of getting a building approved in Chicago is working the local alderman over to your side to get the zoning changed for the site you want. New York will get a 2000 footer at some point; there's just too much density and pride in New York not for one to be built.

Although I would love for Chicago to answer 1WTC with an actual 2000 footer. Damn Spire and the economy...

Haha, I could swear i heard about them not having restrictions... oh well. Anyways though, i wouldn't be too worried dude. Chicago gets a 600m proposal every few years, and their is currently a proposal for a 600m right now, give it 5 years, and I bet they will have one under construction. Especially once this is finished and the economy recovers, they will have a bunch of chicago architects trying to get a 600m + building lol... you know how chicago is about having america's tallest building haha. Im hoping that both Chicago and New york will build some huge buildings soon so that we can catch up with Asia!

Weren't we supposed to see the facade installation on the base start this month? I suppose they have a couple days left...but I don't see anything. I wanna see how these new angled glass panels are going to look on the tower!

You don't know if they haven't already started, the scaffolding is so dense that we will probably not see anything before they take down the black scaffolding around the base ^^

the tower cladding will resume in mid-april according to officials.

as for the podium cladding, it is reportedly already under way. but any progress is currently obscured by the black netting around the podium. most likely at this stage Permasteelisa is still installing the anchors that will attach the glass fins to the podium structure.

Most likely not. I do believe that external elevator only reaches the 30th floor or so and always has, and considering the tower is at 100 floors, it may seem it looks like its coming down when it really isn't. But hey, who knows!

Dan, the one you're refering is the group of 6 300fpm hoisting elevators that stop at the 36th floor. The other one, located at the east, is a group of 6 700fpm hoisting elevator that will run all the way up to the parapet structure. There are in total 13 hoisting elevators, all being RAXTAR RX345.
