"One World Trade Center is poised to become the tallest building in New York City within the next couple of days, officials said today.

Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye said contruction is proceding so rapidly it could surpass the Empire State Building's height as early as Monday, weather permitting.

"One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in Manhattan, eclipsing the Empire State Building," said Foye at a Crain's Breakfast forum this morning in Midtown.

When finished, One World Trade Center will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

Construction started six years ago.

Foye said 55 percent of the building is leased."

That would mean it is now 381meters?

I actually really enjoy viewing 1WTC rise from various spots in the city. The old twins kind of served as a navigational tool because you can judge if you where facing north, south, east, west, by just finding where the towers where, and now the new WTC does the same.

Can't imagine how magnificent it would be when done. It's soo big! :D ...I used to live in harlem, and can see the ESB all the way from there. Makes me smile every time I see it from far. I bet when Penn Plaza is done, you could see that too from harlem/far, since it's pretty much the same height as the ESB, albeit thicker/squarer and spire-less.

I wonder how far one could see the WTC1 when done? It's a a good 300ft taller than the ESB, should be seen from even a further distance :)

I don't recall seeing the twins from uptown. I know the midtown buildings you can see even from some places in Yonkers, such as the Major Deegan coming into the Bronx. But not the downtown scrapers. I guess they are blocked by other buildings.

I drove in from CT after a weekend trip, and was able to see the Twins from White Plains. But it was a crystal-clear day. Strangely I couldn't see the ESB or any of the Midtown scrapers; from that distance they appeared as a giant block.

Interesting. It might be that in White Plains you are a bit further east and Manhattan is at an angle to begin with so from there downtown isn't blocked by midtown. In fact, I think one time someone posted nice pics of the Manhattan skyline from White Plains on the NYC part of this forum.

Gosh, this construction is really dragging out now...:ohno:

I was feeling like it didn't look that tall, but I loaded it and looked at it in google earth and wow!!! I felt like it was going to look a bit too fat, but all my fears are gone, it looks insanely amazing! Check it out! If it looks like this, I will definitely surpass my already high expectations. The beauty of this tower is unassailable! Its a 10/10

I live on East 86th, and from certain streets you can see all the way to downtown. It's quite odd actually, I want to say if you look down Lexington you can see straight to the WTC, might be another one though. I'll tell you next time I go out.

105 i think?105 is the roof but there are not actually 104 inside floors due to stacking plana nadn floor count and mezzaine floors. For example it goes 93,93M and then 100, which is where the steel is right now

Because this tower is self-contained, meaning that all the mechanical equipment required is being stored within the tower, instead of being spreaded throughout the site. Plus add the fact that it will be one of the greenest buildings in the world. You just can't place +110 floor slabs within a 1368' tower when the tower is self-contained.

Dont call it the Willis tower! lol. I do agree with you, the Sears will still be taller in 2/4 categories defined by the CTBUH actually, which is roof height, and top floor. But who cares, I love both buildings, and am dying to see this one top out, it will redefine downtown Manhattan, and will make downtown look unbelievably good!

I am a nut when it comes to accuracy, haha. On a mod im making in CE3, set in nyc, I actually made sure all the news stand, and street planters were accurate to the angle, to the real life version, anyways back on topic

I never understood the logic in not calling the ground floor "floor 1" seems like common sense to me. Anyway, we also don't include the 13th floor, so we're back to even.

Sorry I've haven't posted anything in a while, i've been very busy.

So about a week ago I talked to somebody I know who recently visited the 9/11 memorial. She told me that she asked the guards about a few things, but she told me something really surprising. The guard told her that on the building's podium, there will be a ticker that displays news and advertisements, like the ones in times square. I was really shocked when I heard this, since it would probably look really ugly. Now I don't know if this is confirmed or not, and I sure hope not this would not happen, it would just ruin the whole building. Just wanted to know if you have any information about this proposal.

I have been checking the forum every now and then to catch up on the news, and it seems like the PA is ruining everything, from the plaza entrance, to the spire.

What's next? are they going to replace the 9/11 museum with a Starbucks? Just Kidding, but you see what I mean.

If anybody has any information about this, feel free to reply to me.

I'm pretty sure it will look similar to the original spire design, just a bit thinner. Hopefully it won't look like the old North Tower spire!

So about a week ago I talked to somebody I know who recently visited the 9/11 memorial. She told me that she asked the guards about a few things, but she told me something really surprising. The guard told her that on the building's podium, there will be a ticker that displays news and advertisements, like the ones in times square.

He was probably refering to the screen at 3WTC's podium, which was removed during the final redesign.

With a Steel Column, a Tower Will Reclaim the Manhattan Sky

If the winds are forgiving enough over Lower Manhattan — up where workers can see the whole outline of the island’s tip — a steel column will be hoisted into place Monday afternoon atop the exoskeleton of 1 World Trade Center and New York will have a new tallest building.
More important, downtown will have reclaimed its pole star.

Poking into the sky, the first column of the 100th floor of 1 World Trade Center will bring the tower to a height of 1,271 feet, making it 21 feet higher than the Empire State Building.

After several notorious false starts, a skyscraper has finally taken form at ground zero. At first, its twin cranes could be detected creeping over the jumbled tops of nearby towers. Then, at the rate of a new floor every week, it began reshaping the Manhattan skyline as seen from New Jersey. By late last fall, it could be spotted from the control tower at La Guardia Airport, eight and a half miles away.

A tower has again become an inescapable presence at the southern end of Manhattan.

The author Neal Bascomb, who drives into New York every few weeks from Philadelphia, where he lives, recalled a growing awareness that 1 World Trade Center was visible from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and that it was ratcheting perceptibly taller on each visit. “You know, I was happy to see it,” he said. “I thought, ‘Wonderful.’ ”

From a construction point of view, the completion of the framework, known as the topping out, will be a more significant milestone. That is to occur in a couple of months, when 1 World Trade Center reaches 1,368 feet at its rooftop parapet, identical in height to the first 1 World Trade Center, which was destroyed, with the rest of the complex, in the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001. The ultimate topping out will be the completion next year of an antenna that will bring the structure’s overall height to 1,776 feet.

2017 is pretty optimistic IMO.

They won't begin demolition of the current PATH entrance (east of 1WTC) till probably 2015 (after the Calatrava PATH station is opened). Towers 3 and 4 need to be close to full before Silverstein will start 2WTC.

About the spire / antenna, Yahoo posted an article discussing this:

So is that needle an antenna or a spire?

"Not sure," wrote Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the building.

The needle will, indeed, function as a broadcast antenna. It is described on the Port Authority's website as an antenna. On the other hand, the structure will have more meat to it than your average antenna, with external cladding encasing the broadcast mast.

We have been getting media here over the past week about WTC 1 surpassing the ESB as NY's tallest building ? I know it got to 102 floors but it still hasn't overtaken the ESB mast yet has it ? I went up to the 102 floor on my last visit. Speaking spires and antennas. The ESB has it's original mast/spire with antenna atop that. So guess it's official height is the base of the antenna. Looking good anyway..........

"Symbolic height?" Seriously?!?

The structure is as tall as it is, who cares what some group of self-appointed arbitors says? C'mon folks, stop getting caught up in this. The building doesn't have feelings. No matter what the official record says this STRUCTURE will be whatever it is to the roof and 1,776 ft to the little red light. It will be 1,776 feet tall no matter what the arbitors say. The self appointed arbitors need to be consistent. Have one category, call it world's tallest structure and go from the street to the red light, no matter what the architect calls the fancy stick they place on the roof. Be it over the top fancy like the Burj or utilitarian like Willis. Either count them all or don't. If this and Trump count then Willis Tower's rabbit ears should count too.

I totally agree with everything you said, I was just saying what the page I mentioned said. I have always gone by roof height, top floor height, and pinnacle. That's why the CTBUH made 4 categories after the Sears and Petronas debate. People realized how tiny the Petronas looked next to the sears, which was about 230 feet taller at roof height, and 77 meters taller at pinnacle because of the Sears awesome rocket-ship antennae's.

Good to see it's finally well under way to completion. Just wish they would have had the courage to build a masonry faced 'scraper of more elegant form - The U.S. is unique with that type which could still be evolving, instead of opting for a type that can been seen anywhere in the world these days.

The US has more masonry-type facade buildings going up than anywhere else in the world from what I've seen. Virtually every new luxury building that is going up in Chicago is masonry.

I think a masonry building this tall would've looked out of place with the modernism that has already taken that area of downtown anyway. This is a great way to usher in a new era with a beautiful glassy building. I like it.

I read an article about 1WTC, some information were new to me, probably they are also useful to you:

- only LEED Gold certification

- first cost estimation: $1 billion
now at about $3.8 billion

- gsf. 280.000 m²
e.g. 13.000 $/m² (Burj Khalifa: 4000 $/m²; Taipei 101: 5000 $/m²)

- 73 elevators

- energy use reduction -20 % (compared to what? 90.1-2003?)
- 70 % renewable energy (offsite wind and water)

- 12 fuel cells
4.8 MW electrical power
5.4 MW thermal power
thermal power used for potabel hot water and running absorption chillers

- total cooling power 43 MW => 150 W/m² (e.g. German standard is around 60-80 W/m² - IF the building is air-conditioned)
7000 m³/h water from Hudson river for condensor cooling

- Air handling units with a total of 1.400.000 m³/h (5 m³/(m²h) = quite normal)

- average rent: $100 per m² and month

Got to update my page today!

http://newyorkyimby.blogspot.com/p/new-world-trade-center.html

:)

One World Trade Center will be the pinnacle of the new WTC complex. Featuring 108 floors and designed by David Childs, 1 WTC is an office building that will soon be the headquarters of Conde Nast. If not the most iconic structure of the new WTC, 1 WTC will certainly be the tallest. While the building itself rises to roughly 1,400', a massive mast atop the building will bring the structure's total height to the towering figure of 1,787 feet. One World Trade became the tallest building in the city on April 30th, 2012, finally passing the Empire State in height. Topping-out should occur in June of 2012, with completion scheduled for 2013.

Will be sure to grab more photos this week, as well.

Why do some reports keep saying the building won't be complete till 2014 or 2015...isn't it due to be complete next spring with tenants moving in end of next year or January 2014???

The confusion probably relates to the precise definition of "complete". There is still no firm set date when tenants will start moving in. It will take sometime for the interior offices to be built out. I also doubt we'll see the observation deck opened till sometime in mid-2014. Also they will be constructing temporary loading docks near the podium until the underground VSC roadway is finished. That's dependent on the transportation hub's progress.

A late '14 or 2015 completion date isn't that far fetched. The building should look mostly finished "exterior" wise by the end of this year. Save perhaps the areas where the external elevators are attached.

There isn't a 6WTC in the plans. Unless the proposed performing arts center is given that moniker. Even 5WTC is very iffy at this point.

There will be a 5 WTC that will certainly be last and yes I believe the PAC will be named 6 at some point in the future once the entire main complex is complete. I don't see how they wouldn't.

yes i understand its gone past ESBs offcial height of 381m, but i still think its antenna should be included at 449m. it would look incomplete without it right? but they are including WTC1 antenna as offical height? wierd huh

The Cranes are already higher than that I believe, plus the official height of 1WTC is still 541 meters and ESB 381 meters, ESB's antenna doesn't count, it's a bit silly. :)

Haha, I know what you mean, I have always thought they should go by roof height, or atleast pinnacle. But luckily, they have 4 categories. I remember the first time I knew about the ESB, and I though, so it's 381 meters to the roof ? So wait, its 381 to the top of that spire ? I eventually found out it was 381 meters to the top of the part of the roof that looks like a rocket ship, and I was pretty surprised.

Chuck: GSA deal by summer (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/realestate/commercial/chuck_gsa_deal_by_summer_lpNO9592hibPr263DedXNN)

By Steve Cuozzo,
May 1, 2012

"The General Services Administration has vowed to sign a long-delayed lease at 1 World Trade Center by the summer, Sen. Chuck Schumer told us last night.
“I spoke to [GSA acting administrator] Daniel Tangherlini and he said, ‘We’ll get it done by summer,’ ” Schumer said.
Schumer added, “We called Douglas Durst [the Port Authority’s 1 WTC partner], and he said he needs it by around July 4.
“So we’re going to push the GSA to do that,” Schumer said.
The pending, 300,000 square-foot lease is significant not only for its size, but because it’d push the 3 million square-foot tower over the psychologically crucial 50 percent-leased mark.
PA executive director Patrick Foye, who’s been hyping the tower’s milestone in rising taller than the Empire State Building, has said that 55 percent of the skyscraper is “expected” to be leased — which is not the same as actually leased.
We reported last week that Schumer, a staunch proponent of new office development, was prodding the GSA to complete the 1 WTC deal in light of the agency’s paralysis over the recent spending scandal.
He said, “It’s very important to private-sector tenants to know that 1 World Trade is more than 50 percent leased — not only companies interested in that building, but also in 4 World Trade Center,” which so far has inked only the PA and possibly a city agency as tenants.
Condé Nast signed for 1 million square feet and Beijing Vantone for 200,000 square feet at 1 WTC.
The GSA signed a term sheet with the PA and Durst last summer. The lease — originally meant to be twice as large — has been in negotiation for five years.
The PA and Durst declined comment. Reps for the GSA could not immediately be reached."

just beautiful.

I have a question. Both One World Trade Centre and the North Tower of the WTC measure to 417m at their roof. Yet, the WTC had its highest floor at a highest measurement than One World Trade, something like 411m, with One World Trade having its highest floor at just 401m. Is there going to be an unoccupied floor space in One World Trade that will tip it off to 417 metres ?

It took them 6 years to surpass ESB where as ESB was build in 1 year and 2 months in 1930's.

Riiiight... because they only had to install dial-up internet in the ESB back in the 30's. :sly:

I'm realy happy about this, but I am ashamed that I'm Dutch, when I read all the comments about this on a news site everyone was saying a lot of stupid things... Like: "who cares?" and that it wassn't respectvul that it was higher and a lot of bad things about the "real story" about it... :$
+ the most comments are realy weird...
And I don't understand.

P.S. Sorry for the typing... I'm mad!!

Don't be ashamed that your Dutch...maybe just a bit whistful that you gave away a place called New Amsterdam.......Just think if you hung in there you could claim this building that is even taller than one of your windmills.........just kidding. I love The Netherlands......but then....if only hey?

DO THEY NOT HAVE A TOWER 6 THEY HAVE 1,2,3,4,5, AND 7 WHAT ARE THER GOING TO DO ABOUT 6

i dont get why they have to be towers, for all im concerned each structure is a wtc# just like former 4,5,6 were just 8/9 story knubs and 3 a 22 floor hotel. the perfermance center, museum, and transport hubs could all be viable options in case the others dont make it off the ground (hopefully they do, though). do any of the towers have hotel included like the old marriott? or maybe the millenium should suffice

The Original One World Trade Center and Two World Trade Center were actually not the same height.

One World Trade Center's Roof Height was: 417M
Two World Trade Center's Roof Height was: 415M

2WTC was actually always slightly shorter haha :)

The new One WTC has the exact same Roof Height as the original One WTC: 417M, and the new Two WTC is 387.1 Roof Height and 415 Antenna Spire, so they will look very impressive and bring back the Skyline :)

I don't remember hearing much of the Shard's TO, outside of the European media.

Heck, I don't even remember the Burj Khalifa having this much coverage when it became world's tallest when it was still U/C.

Shows you the power New York still has over the rest of the world.

i dont mean to offend anyone but i hate the fact people are still calling it the Freedom Tower. i think it bothers me because its almost like a 'we're asking for it' type of thing, and the media only perpetuates it. When you think about it, One World Trade Center is a much better and appropriate name for our country and what we believe in. Its not just an address, think about the connotation, mainly 'One World.' One World seems so much more welcoming, worldly, non-instigating, title. considering what happened over a decade ago and the fact that NYC is often regarded as the capital of the world, 'One World Trade Center' is a perfect name (imo of course)

Of course we would all love to see 2WTC, but it's not about what we want, it's about what NYC needs, and their isn't enough money to build something that isn't needed right now.

NASA 905
NASA 905 was the first SCA. It was obtained from American Airlines in 1974. Shortly after acceptance by NASA, the SCA flew a series of wake vortex research flights at the Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, Calif., in a study to seek ways of reducing turbulence produced by large aircraft.
Following the wake vortex studies, NASA 905 was modified by Boeing to its present SCA configuration and the aircraft was returned to Dryden for its role in the 1977 Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests (ALT). This series of eight captive and five free flights with the orbiter prototype Enterprise, in addition to ground taxi tests, validated the aircraft's performance as an SCA, in addition to verifying the glide and landing characteristics of the orbiter configuration — paving the way for orbital flights.
