Why do you care so much anyways? Did you even live in NYC to see them everyday because it looks like you're in Sweden.....those who want them back so bad are the ones who had a close connection with them. I live just 25 miles out from the city where the tall buildings can be seen on clear days, I would have loved to see two towers protruding from the hills, but I was too young to even take them for granted. Now I am just used to a newer, 21 century building rising into the clouds, but there is still a sense of sadness and past reflecting in its facade. I guess even if you live nowhere near New York theres still some connection that everyone feels

I want them back I will always have that feeling and I am not alone.

And Tommy Boy...those are touching memories, but still, it's been almost 11 years since the tragedy. It really is about time to move on. Just because you have fond memories there, it doesn't mean you (or others like you) need to be crusading through this thread with your disapproval of the new WTC and what you think should be there instead. Unless Durst backtracks on the antenna, whatever symbolic height 1WTC was to have is history. It's an office tower like any other. Money talks and money has spoken.

It's bad enough that the "sacred grounds" will be waterfalls, reminding visitors that NYC was too afraid to rebuild what was lost.

I would like to see the complex energized with the level of energy found in Times Square. Making it a destination would accomplish that.

Now the holes in the first row of cladding make sense. they´re there that they can clad the podium.

I think they did a great job on the memorial, personally. Unless they cut back, I expect the whole site to become very popular, and a center for downtown NYC.

They are most likely filling in the the missing pannels. I assume mow that they are finished installing the anchors on those sides that they can put the missing glass in now. Base adding is probably coming too now though!

I know that, but I don't consider some kind of vague "food service" on the observation deck to be on par with the return of Windows on the World, which was going to happen in some fashion until recently. We aren't even getting a classy bar up there.

Yes, the original location would put it smack dab in the middle of the memorial, approximately where the museum is. Apparently they didn't want to incorporate it into the memorial because they "don't want 9/11 artifacts cluttering up the memorial plaza."

The (proposed) site for The Sphere is south of the memorial, on the same plot of land where 130 Liberty Street and the church used to stand.

So to me it looks like they scrapped the idea of recreating fulton street? In this new rendering the photo is depicted from the memorial it looks like and if you notice there is not street, just the memorial plaza extended into 1WTC's plaza...See for yourself.

The rendering was made to illustrate the base cladding. In those kind of renderings, the surroundings often don't match with the real world. In this case, I think the designer didn't want to add any cars in the scene so that it looks nicer..

They already constructed many layers of the base of Fulton Street, so I don't think they will remove it.. the only question is if access is restricted for bypassers

The rendering was made to illustrate the base cladding. In those kind of renderings, the surroundings often don't match with the real world. In this case, I think the designer didn't want to add any cars in the scene so that it looks nicer..

They already constructed many layers of the base of Fulton Street, so I don't think they will remove it.. the only question is if access is restricted for bypassers

Well we know pedestrians have full access to the entire grounds besides typical restricted areas clearly, however I wouldn't mind if they did get rid of it, I like the idea of a super block better then having streets cut across the site.

So to me it looks like they scrapped the idea of recreating fulton street? In this new rendering the photo is depicted from the memorial it looks like and if you notice there is not street, just the memorial plaza extended into 1WTC's plaza...See for yourself.

No food at all on the observation deck of the Sears (Willis) Tower.. unless you count the fudge you can buy in the gift shop. It's good fudge, about 20 different flavors. $6 for a slab about the size of a stick of butter. I recommend Mocha Peanut Butter.

My guess is that like the Sears Tower observation deck, the amount of people visiting is so huge that they really want to move these people along.

There are other express elevators for that.

Even if you buy a "fast pass" ($25) to get to the front of the security checkpoints, you still end up waiting in line about an hour to get to the top of the Sears Tower. Lord help you if you buy the regular $15 or $20 passes.. you'll be there for hours, and still have to sit through this mandatory god awful movie that is so outdated that it claims the Sears Tower is the tallest in the world...

When i went up the esb last year we went straight up but by the time we left the people trying to go up were being told they would wait 2+ hours just to get in the elevator and the observation deck was already packed.

John Hancock in Chicago has at least one little cafe on the observation deck, and then a restaurant and a bar the next floor up. That is what the WTC should have done.

I don't want to stray too far off topic, but John Hancock's observatory is really top notch.

For me....a observatory floor with glass like the Sears tower...or the new WTC 1 is not a observatory.The air in the face like the ESB is amazing and really is good for the tourist.

They have 40 million to clad a part of the tower which will be only visible on ground level, but screw up an antenna because of 20 million which will be visible for miles and miles outside of the city.

This tower is rather weak compared to others. I am glad the ESB still remains the sole Manhattan landmark.

I read that One World Trade Center is being built with more safety features including a dedicated stairway for rescue. Look it up on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_world_trade_center)!

I would say that this tower will be the safest skyscraper ever built.

I saw on natgeo, that the center core, where the stairway is, is basically a bomb shelter with thick thick solid concrete walls for it's core..I forget how thick, but it was a big number like 10', 20' or more, I dunno..but wow. Not the tallest, but supposedly the strongest building on earth.

The normal concrete wall at Tower One is 3' thick, decreasing to 2' the higher you go. That's very thick compared to the standard 10"-12" concrete walls.

Enough with the spire crap!

Looking at those photos makes me wish that the PA stuck with the old podium. The new one is good, but the original goes great with the new building.

The next jump should take us to either level 104 (+20' 6") or 105 (+41' 4"). From the 105th floor to the top of the parapet is another 33' 4". With such odd floor heights it's hard to say how many jumps are left. Could be two or three.

I'll bet that perimeter steel columns will be erected either tomorrow or Tuesday.. Wonder how tall they'll be.

Metal deck needs to be spreaded out before that occurs.

and there are a lot of buildings looking similar to 1WTC, because seriously it is a pretty simple design and a simple design makes a lot of things look similar. also the northeast asia trade tower (currently tallest building in south korea) looks similar to 1WTC.

I completely agree that the spire is a legitimate topic of discussion for this building. It's just a personal opinion but I don't think that if a so called spire looks like an overgrown flagpole on a flat roof that it should not count in the final height. I do have a perfect example of a building with a beautifully designed spire in which the roof actually is the spire and that's the Chrysler Building. The entire top of the building tapers gracefully to a single point which is clearly part of the design and should be included in the height. I love the design of the 1WTC but it's not even close to being 1776 in height even with the original spire design as far as I'm concerned. Sticks on top of flat roofs don't deserve to be included in the height of buildings.

Is it just me, but the top is getting thinner than what was supposed to be? its kinda different from the render... but I love this tower, maybe when they put up the glass it will be a little more similar to the render.

The building is very impressive and the spire/antenna takes it to it's total height. Maybe the former design overpowered attention of the building ? Looking at the new renders the tower is the focal point and the antenna stands above more like the original antenna on WTC 1.

I wish we'd get a good closeup of the roof. Those angled beams must be very close to merging. As far as all of the business with the spire is concerned I would imagine that all of the parts to the round base as well as the antenna have already been constructed so I think we're going to be stuck with it. The new renders without the enclosure make the whole thing look utilitarian and detracts from the design of the building so I would have much preferred not making 1WTC look like a giant cell phone tower and just having a flat roof but I'm sure it's too late for any changes at this point. In any case, the building itself is beautiful.

They are. They're just doing one floor this time. The 103rd floor is only ~20 feet high. Usually height increases are two office floors, about 27 feet high.

It'll be topped out when it reaches rooftop level. The spire is just an afterthought. Actually the rooftop would look good with out a spire at all.

I hope they build the antenna with the cladding, not necessarily because of height, but mainly because of the appearance of the tower.
After every redesign I got a bit more disappointed. First the boxed base and now the antenna. And I'm not convinced of the new lobby design either. I understand that the developers try to make things cheaper - and it is nothing wrong with that - but this isn't just an ordinary office building. They build a new landmark.
