Atm only the 4 feet column splices are at parapet level. The additional 7 feet are 1 foot for additional 8 inches and 6 additional feet for the properly measured height

:bash: It looks horrible. I mean, It doesn't call my attention at all. When I saw the picture, my eyes drifted first to the shuttle and then to the skyline, out of which ESB jumped out, but it took me time to notice 1 WTC... it seems unfinished, undecorated, cold and evil.

Even if they build the antenna at least they could build it without that hideous ring. They should build a simple good old fashioned antenna like the one on the North Tower or on ESB

Oh Kanto  ... If only you knew that the "old fashioned antennas" which you talk about were not so old-fashion, but late XX century additions. ESB's original spire, from the early XX cent., which ends at the upper observation capsule, was designed with looks very much in mind and was to serve as a landing post for blimps. The upper, more horrible, metal structure of disparate sticks and cables (in the brutalist style that you so much love) was added later and was never intended in the original plan of the structure.

Now, did I just hear you say that ESB's first architect designed such a proportionate, detailed, symbolic, and symmetric structure to be topped off by a disproportionate, under-construction-looking pinnacle that only looks good from afar? Doesn't seem to make sense.

EDIT: It just dawned on me that this last sentence ^^ has validity with the newly redesigned spire of 1 WTC and its contrast to the detail, symmetry and symbolism of the tower.

Well i never bet money, but for fun, i will bet that tower one will be toppled out some time between the first and third week of july. cause we have to remember these are now mechanical floors there constructing, so it all ways takes longer to build those floors then regular office floors...

The mechanical floors shouldn't take a lot more time than the office floors. The mechanical floors are about 2 office floors. 1 office floor would take a week. So a wild guess maybe about 1,5 week for mechanical floors because they don't have to prep a new floor they just make the frames a bit taller.

^^ lol I was thinking the same exact thing..so here are some stats! :)

One World Trade Center is...........

-84 feet taller than the Empire State Building
-134 feet taller than Bank of America Tower
-288 feet taller than the Chrysler Building/NY Times Tower
-382 feet taller than AIG Tower WITH the spire!
-407 feet taller than 40 Wall Street WITH the spire!
-484 feet taller than GE Building/One Chase Manhattan
-593 feet taller than 7 World Trade Center

-------------------------------------------------------------
-only 117 feet below the roof of the Sears Tower!!
-only 55 feet from surpassing the spire of the Trump Tower

-------------------------------------------------------------

-17nth tallest building in the world
-11nth highest roof height in the world!! soon to be in the Top 10 once it surpasses the 1,335 foot roof height (1 foot) of 2 International Commerce Center :D

No offense, but your saying that now? I'm sure it will be a lot different, and you will have a different opinion when the other 400M and 300M 2WTC and 4WTC are built, also IWTC isn't finished yet. Even though it may take a while for them to be built, perhaps wait until they are finished, then we will have many high buildings. :)

This cluster although not the best, is still good. I can't see it being bland and submissive since it really does stand out from the older buildings surrounding it.

Its shaping up to look quite nice to be honest. It needs a spire/antenna. Without one, it will look exactly like the tower in South Korea and a bit like SWFC, it certainly needs some differentiation.

The Spire will be assembled while cladding is still going on. Glass should be complete to the top by the end of December...maybe even a bit sooner due to the recent accelerated pace...The Spire should begin somewhere between late July-September I heard for completion at the end of this year as well...We will see an almost complete building from the outside anyway at the end of this year:)

The official ruling if 1wtc antenna will count will be done by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, so i think that skyscaper city realize that so change it back to 1776 until Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat makes its ruling.

so they made an exception for this building?

or are they going to change that ghastly re-designed antenna into something else?

No one knows yet. Either they are going to go against their system and count an antennae, or they won't count it.

I doubt that the topping out will affect the speed of the glass.
They still have to do concrete and fireprofing on the new floors and the ones covered by the tarp.
So Probably not.

By "bottoms" I'll assume you mean the 20th floor? They have openings because they will be installing base glass starting in October.

Well when you think about it, the steel workers are going to be done pretty soon so who knows, maybe they will go help with glass, & maybe even start at the top & work their way down to the current glass. You never know so I'm gonna actually wait, and just see what happens to answer this question, I should've realized that no one truly knows this answer which is probably why it is unasked. Iron worker's wont install the glass, and most of the time they don't gun (tighten) the building up until the concrete is poured. There is still a ton of welding to do (which the iron workers do)

No, each curtain wall panel fits within the lower one, so enclosing from top to bottom is technically impossible. They'll most likely enclose one floor per week (maximum speed), they can't go faster due to the other projects going on top (fireproofing, core slabs and stairs, shear walls, concrete on deck and metal deck). All of these projects follow a 1 floor per week cycle.

curtain wall is 580 work (ornamental ironworkers)
red iron erection is 40/361 (structural ironworkers)

Guys, just because an article says 1776 ft doesn't mean that it is. Until the CTBUH says it is 1776, or the NYT says CTBUH counts antennae... etc.. it is undecided. You all are starting to sound so naive. The only way this antennae gets counted with its current height is if the CTBUH makes an exception, which would mean that every other building in the world gets cheated..

But 1 WTC will always have the highest pinnacle height which is just as important as the so called architecture height the CTBUH uses. Even the CTBUH acknowledges multiple measurements as equals.

An article from some unknown like the link you mentioned is nothing, this is a big enough issue that whenever something happens, the times, and CTBUH will have an article on it.

Your welcome, Im trying to do a 1 year comparason shorty, but first i want to note something.

They added 6 rows of glass in one month, but now 3 rows of glass in only 1 week! So that may mean that they are speeding things up alot, and will get up to 10 rows of glass by july! And i think they only need like 20 more floors with glass.. So I would say the glass will be complete (Again excluding lobby) by August.

Seems like the PA would want to let the media know, because it will be a pretty big deal...Will it be on June 14, at the Obama visit? But I thought topping out meant the parapet, rather than the top of the steel? Don't see how they could get the parapet up in only a week? According on Otie's diagram, the tower is only 1313 feet tall? I thought it was 1339 feet tall to the splices.

It is, i think he may have forgotten to do that because the diagram isn't right.

I know, I'm pretty confused as well. People are saying we are at the 105th floor but I thought the columns erected were for 103M and 104. I guess we'll wait and see what the actual height is once the next perimeter steel is erected. People say the Tower will top out this Thursday but I somehow doubt that too because the weather could be an issue.

Will you be able to get onto the roof of 1WTC like you were from the original WTC? Also will there be a restaurant again?

There will likely be a fast-casual restaurant as part of the observation deck. It's a lot less likely there will be a full service restaurant.

~1,318' (~401.7m) with some core columns extending underside 104M (don't know the elevation of that mezzanine)

*Add 5'-8" (~1.72m) to the figure if you want to start measuring from the lowest, open-air, pedestrian entrance instead of the main lobby floor (Finished Main Ground Floor Level).

The restaurants or food provided isn't really being selected yet - it's just the food service providers at the moment. Aramark, Legends (Yankee Stadium), Malkin (Empire State Building), and a few others are in the running with Danny Meyer. Shake Shack is the obvious choice if Meyer wins the contract but a Blue Smoke would be pretty nice too.

True I may be mistaken but is the microwave radiation emitted by the communications ring dangerous to humans? On a side note if 1WTC were given the opportunity to rise an extra 100ft it would surpass the Willis Tower as tallest in the US by roof. But as it stands now its the tallest in pinnacle height. :)

iloveclassicrock7

True and also the microwave radiation is dangerous to humans.

Haha very true. The developer behind the Miglin Beitler proposal in Chicago actually said that they had to test radiation samples because of the Sears antennae's, and that putting a tower too close to the Sears with a height of 400m+ would create a radiation vacuum, or something of that sort, and would cause massive radiation problems. So the moral of the story is, antennae's cause health problems and will give you radiation poisoning

As I've said before. You can't raise the height of tower one.
The Foundations have been set to handle a certain weight. Adding more floors could be dangerous and result in collaspe.
Modern Marvels did a piece about that.
Secondly, the building tapers as it goes up, as in recent photos, the triangles will touch. You couldn't add another 100 feet.

Exactly, I wish people would just be happy with this. It restores the skyline, and will make downtown Manhattan look incredible. Who cares if it isn't America's tallest, it is as tall as the original tower, that we lost 11 years ago, and that is what matters for me.

Building foundations handling the certaing weight they were calculated for is dangerous, foundations are always meant to handle more weight than they will eventually do. Is some sort of a safety range.

Not at all plausible, as it would destroy the visual continuity of the building. Intersecting triangles. Kinda set in stone.

Not at all plausible, as it would destroy the visual continuity of the building. Intersecting triangles. Kinda set in stone.

Why are so many people here so obsessed with height and so utterly unconcerned with architecture?

Architect: "I just designed this beautiful 250m tower!"

Skyscrapercity Poster: "ZOMG MAKE IT 450m!!!!" :crazy2:

Architect: headdesk :wallbash:

I never said it was the best way to do it but the physics allow it. Only wanted to clarify something discussed some posts above.

But yes, some people are quite obssesed with height. Not my case.:okay:

2,000 days have passed since the first steel beam was put in place. ;)

...you're talking about the first one that is part of the foundation, now underground, right?

One of the rare angles where I don't like 1WTC. It looks kind of weird and fat...

Seems like a lot of thoughts have gone into the design of this building and the features around it. I really like the water feature. Someday I will come to NY to see for myself.

Sorry for jumping on you, my mistake! I see so many height obsessed people here I've started raging with little provocation!

Building foundations handling the certaing weight they were calculated for is dangerous, foundations are always meant to handle more weight than they will eventually do. Is some sort of a safety range.

Adding a couple floors is plaussible.

You Can Not Add more floors. The Building tapers. Do you see the triangles that are almost touching?
Please Think.

This building, was meant to equal the height of the original twins of the WTC, and not the Willis Tower in Chicago. The height of the roof is where it is, and the spire or antenna at this point has no relevance whatsoever.

The idea of 1 wtc actually was to signified both aspects but, as for me and i am pretty sure other new yorkers out there would love the idea of taking the title of nations tallest form Chicago and bringing it back here to new york.

Sorry if im just causing an argument here, but wasnt 2WTC suppose to be the exact height of the original WTC, and 1WTC was suppose to be the biggest in america to show our freedom? I swear i heard that from somewhere before.

There are more than 3 urban areas in New York, not only Manhattan, I can see.

I may be wrong but from that perspective isn't the "third skyline" just jersey side facing lower Manhattan?

I am sure Chicagoans would willingly give it once NYC has a building with a roof height of 443m+

the tip of 2 WTC is supposed to be with in a couple feet or so of the roof height of 1 WTC..........not sure if i ever heard what you are saying about 2 WTC being as high as the originals

Here is a comparison. 1WTC is taller by far then the original WTC and 2WTC is very close to the original height.

its the same height. but the spire makes it 541 meters tall :)

It is higher then the original.

I cant wait to see it complete. The original were very dominant and I would love to see the whole complex dominate the skyline again. I just hope the other towers can get a move on and rise so they can complement this beauty that is 1WTC.

It doesn't look weird and fat there at all. Why must you nitpick?

In general, it's a very fine and elegant looking building. It's just that particular angle which doesn't suit me.

I agree. The corners make it look a bit disproportional.
