Myster E August 30th, 2010, 01:49 AM Cladding should start soon enough, but I prefer them taking their time, since too many times has the cladding on buildings UC been damaged because of bad timing (and poor safety measures).
For the OT comments, so we can put an ending to it (at least temporary):
1) Keep away from politics, especially when you have no idea what you are talking about.
2) The cell phone you own (assuming you are old enough to own one) has probably greater computational power than what was used when the old WTC towers were engineered. Estimation was the main path to follow, there were no supercomputers that could do simulations for that kind of scenario (or almost any kind really, given how rudimental they were). So again, keep away from things you know nothing about.
Probably the most OT I've seen on this page so far (and there is fierce competition):
hmmm...shanghai tower retribution, :-) I'm sorry for being a jerk, I'll end it there.
Can't wait for the cladding to appear, should be stunning.
metsfan August 30th, 2010, 02:43 AM No, i do not feel it rise, the rumbling and whatnot of the construction is too far across the river........ i do SEE it rise, since my girlfriend lives in hudson county i go to exchange place a lot, and you can see pretty much all of manhattan from the pier there, and the pier the nearby hotel sits on. You people with your one track minds.....

AJM August 30th, 2010, 03:01 AM Looks like an older model Favco STD 1500, like the first crane that came down from the building at 42nd and 10th ave a few months back.
Zensteeldude August 30th, 2010, 03:10 AM I think you might be right, I wasn't sure if it was a current model or an older model.
If it is an STD 1500 just double the figures for max load from the ones I posted for the TD133.
fordgtman1992 August 30th, 2010, 03:24 AM Why is the new crane so low? What will it be used for?
Zensteeldude August 30th, 2010, 03:34 AM It will not stay at it's current elevation for long, it's for the concrete contractor.

VRS August 30th, 2010, 04:49 AM new crane..??
600West218 August 30th, 2010, 05:30 AM Questions: What is the purpose of the new crane? is it simply to bring supplies up to the already constructed floors? If so, will this move all the way up the tower with its construction? Also, if this method is better than using the existing cranes on top or elevators why don't we commonly see it on other buildings?

BarbaricManchurian August 30th, 2010, 05:59 AM they are taking a long time; in dubai the tallest tower in the world was finished in 5 years and it is more or less the double of the freedom tower that even after 9 years doesn´t look like a big advance. There you have, how the syndicates can ruin a city or a country. Before all dose labor unions the USA had the best working people in the world, now finding something made in the USA is almost impossible, and if you don´t believe me look at GM (government Motors) almost went bankrupt all because of the labor unions and the goverment is ruining GM, Chrysler and the free market, Ford is a company that represents america a capitalist country, the light in the end of the hallway, the american dream but now is more like the ¨ Chinese dream"

A Ferrari built by hand takes one week and the quality simply shows.
The burj Dubai / khalif w/e, is pourd concrete and I doubt it will still be there in 120 years.
The wtc1 is a metalogical wonder that will be around for 100s of years.
Yes, I agree completely with what you say about a chinese built car.
But beware of what you say of the Burj dubai. Nobody knows what building will be around in a 100 years. I get the point you're getting to. The burj Dubai was built in 5 years, well, that's their business. I myself am pleased with the time taken in consideration for the WTC site. But stating that the Burj Dubai apparently is not going to last because it's made out of poured concrete it's just nonsense!
Here in Chile, 99 percent of our large and tall building are made out of poured concrete, while there are only very few examples of steel buildings. Why? because of earthquakes. Our first real skyscraper (Titanium Tower, 192 mts.) stood up in a 8.8 magnitude earthquake just fine because it's a poured concrete marvel. Every material and technique has their pro's and con's, but it doesn't mean one is far superior than the other one. I study architechture here, and studied for a year overseas too, and in both places I was taught that poured concrete (with steel grid inside of course) was one of the greatest and most durable techniques. It stands fires, earthquakes, time, erosion, etc extremely well when done right. Still, New York is New york, they dont have earthquakes (neither does Dubai) so steel framing is the way to go. Fine by them!
My point is, both Burj Dubai and One World Trade Center are technological marvels of their own. And it's got nothing to do with how long it took to build them. I could start talking about labour issues which are more important in the subject matter, but hell no, I won't go into that.
Cheerios.
PS: gosh, One World Trade center is looking greater everyday!

It's going to climb up the side on that frame it's sitting on.. I've seen this with cranes in China.. That's about 500 tonne of crane and frame.

Is the footprint of this building slightly smaller than the former twin towers?
Handbanana August 31st, 2010, 04:33 AM Is the footprint of this building slightly smaller than the former twin towers?
Yes, but the difference is hardly noticeable. Actually, I think the new WTC's footprint is closer to 203' by 203'.
spiller9 August 31st, 2010, 06:08 AM are the footprints of the original twin towers aligned in the same orientation? in some of the pics of the memorial pools it looks as if the north tower is slightly rotated in the southerly direction. could be my eyes playing a trick.

The Manitowoc 18000 with Max-ER kit doesn't even weigh 500 tonnes !
At most the crane and climbing frame with a full load on the crane is about 75tons. (Short tons not Metric tonnes.)
Is the footprint of this building slightly smaller than the former twin towers?
Everyone keeps quoting the column centers for both the old and the new. The overall outside dimension of the Twins was a little less than 210', Tower one is going to be 205'. So yes, Tower One is slightly smaller in overall footprint.

The pools of the memorial actually sit inside the foundations of the Twins, there orientation is exact.
adam-albany August 31st, 2010, 11:27 PM A new quarterly report (2Q2010) (http://www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress/pdf/2Q2010_Report.pdf) was just released on wtcprogress.com.
Most interesting I've found so far is that the steel contractor has managed a workaround so that steel erection can now move 10 floors ahead of the concrete instead of the 8 floors ahead we've had so far.
The third quarter milestones for 1WTC are:
Start Curtain Wall Installation:
This represents the start of activities to support the placement of curtain wall
above the 20th story level of 1WTC. Beginning activity will include the
installation of hangers on the 1WTC structural steel and be follow by the
placement of the curtain wall panels themselves. The curtain wall will enclose the
building and trail the Cocoon system as it rises with the erection of the Structural
steel.
Steel Erection to the 36th floor:
This Represents the structural steel framing which makes up the building’s
“Skeleton.”
Concrete core to the 28th floor:
This Represents the Interior Concrete Core, which provides the structural
stability, or the building’s “spine,” of the building as it rises.
Metal Decking to 33rd Floor:
This represents the metal decking on the 33rd floor slab, which is approximately
670 feet above street level
Zensteeldude August 31st, 2010, 11:31 PM ^^I thought the erection steel columns looked thicker !

Oh yeah, I also just wonder about it. I know there's a long way to go and the countdown might be very long, but anyway - maybe it'll take many years, but it's worth waiting.

So the same about the ENTIRE site - I'd really like to know when it's 100% complete.

rezvpav September 2nd, 2010, 06:26 AM Thank you, DinoVabec!
Well, guys - seems like things are not too bad. 7 WTC is up and running, two towers and the memorial will surely be completed. Another two towers... well, I'm sure they will also be completed. Yes, with fundraising problems and maybe even scandals; yes, with moans and groans, but I'm sure so. So these four will form the core of the iconic site - and who would dare then to refuse from finishing it when only performing arts center and transportation hub are left?!
I hope that 5 WTC will also be built but, being honest, I hate the current design.
And one more important thing. I'm just happy that up to this date the common sense had always played its role and this fantastic project has always been escaping from all the dangers and hazards - sometimes in the last second. Let's look back just at the "decision" to make 2 WTC and 3 WTC "stump" buildings! Not quite the thing to do, huh? But it was a serious decision, and I can recall many like that one.
And it is awesome that there are people who resist these "projects". They might seem foolhardy at the time, but they DO resist. And I'm sure they understand that our children wouldn't forgive us if we don't rebuild this world wonder as it should be rebuilt only because of our meaningless fussing and fighting and nasty petty intrigues.
So keep going, the World Trade Center complex! It's a long road, but walk and ye shall reach!
Sincerely yours,
Pavel Rezvushkin

Glidescube September 2nd, 2010, 01:03 PM Will NYC ever allow a building taller than 1776 feet??
rezvpav September 2nd, 2010, 01:34 PM Will NYC ever allow a building taller than 1776 feet??
I also frequently think about it and SO hope so!

OldWorldResident September 2nd, 2010, 01:34 PM Will NYC ever allow a building taller than 1776 feet??
It depends on the definition of "ever" in your case.
in the next decades -> no
from now till the end of the universe -> yes

Turbosnail September 2nd, 2010, 01:47 PM Meh, height isn't everything any longer - I mean look at Dubai, building ridiculously tall which kind of sends out the message "look at me, I'm here" without having the business talent and culture to back it up - cities around the world are collecting skyscrapers like third world countries collect fleets of Mercedes for status and I think skyscraper trends have advanced beyond just building the tallest - I was watching the video on retro fitting the Empire State Building for sustainability and also reading about the environmentally friendly construction of the Bank of America building. Now that's far more pallatable for modern building design than wishing a city's buildings taller - the equivalent, as someone on these forums once said, of a bunch of sad middle aged men waving their willies around to see whose is the biggest.
eland September 2nd, 2010, 05:56 PM Be aware that the 1776 ft is including the spire.
So even if the city doesn't allow building taller than 1776 ft, they can build buildings that are higher/ look higher than WTC1 (if you don't include the spire)

Yes, but it means that we still can only dream about something like, say, the Shanghai Tower in the NYC (I mean the height).

iamxeddiex September 2nd, 2010, 07:20 PM It would be blasphemy to build that on hollow ground of the old WTC site. You should be ashamed of yourselves. WTC 2 is all most the same height of the WTC 1 at the roof. Besides, NYC has built too many twin towers in the past decade.

Why in the world is everyone making such a big deal about height in the NYC skyline? :bash::bash:
NYC has plenty of height.
DinoVabec September 2nd, 2010, 11:02 PM is there space for that so maybe a possibility in future?
No..It won't happen...Ever...
QuarterMileSidewalk September 3rd, 2010, 06:02 AM Personally, I like the current concept, because having the one tower at a similar scale to the original twins, but without its own twin, is a powerful architectural symbol all on its own.
It will remind people of the loss of the originals, because it looks and feels like something is missing from the skyline, forever.
This effect will be lessened when towers 2 and 3 are also built, but people will always remember the twin towers, and know that they're not coming back.
The voids of the memorial will only manifest this effect to the observer who actually visits them, but the decision not to rebuild the skyline as it was before will write the memory and loss of those people who died on 9/11 right into the very urban fabric of the city itself, for all the world to see.
It is certainly sad, and solemn, but I now think that building new twins would be a little bit like pretending we can bring back the people, too. I think we'd be doing the victims a disservice if we didn't make the place they died a better place than ever before, and then go on with our own lives, while remembering them. I think that when the current plan is fully realized, it will represent one of the best places in New York.
Upward!
Skyscrapers144 September 3rd, 2010, 06:06 AM is there space for that so maybe a possibility in future?
I don't think so. After the attacks they had planned to rebuilt the Twin Towers again. That picsture is just someone edit it and made it look like 2 Freedom Towers, but i dont think that they wanted to plan to make 2 Freedom Towers so i guess thats a no to your question. Plus no space, i mean you have the Performing Arts Center next to it and 7WTC behind it, the memorials in front of it and the WFC on the other side.

kl 2020 ideas September 3rd, 2010, 09:07 AM I felt sympathy to u guys who lost the twins on that day. And welding. Every connection was welded on the base. I will not say that it is indestructible, but I'm fairly certain that this is the strongest skyscraper ever built. I also suspect that the bump-out in the core that Zen does not want to talk about is either an air vent to remove smoke or a refuge area - possibly with an elevator.
meh_cd September 5th, 2010, 01:06 AM Just out of curiosity, what was with that faulty piece they were replacing? I never saw the story behind it.
Either left the way it was so that they could lift it to install equipment in the mechanical floors or a simple foul-up. Either way, it is over and done with.
E: my apologies for a double post.

That's another crane deck, for bringing in material or equipment lifted by a crane.
Just out of curiosity, what was with that faulty piece they were replacing? I never saw the story behind it.
It was just an "OHSHIT!!", either the tube was too short or, probably, too long. They fixed it, moving right along now. (The technical term for it is a "girt") it's just there to support the cladding. (It's an 18"x12"x 5/8" rectangular tube.)

I recently saw a floor plan for the building posted on one of the popular websites, and it had detail of the core - bathrooms, the bump-out, etc. Of course, I didn't save it and now I can't find it anywhere. It may have been in one of the recent news reports.
If I remember right, it said the bump out was either the fan room or an area for an emergency generator. I'm going to drive myself nuts trying to find that plan online.
Heck, maybe it was one you posted and then deleted soon after.

Glidescube September 6th, 2010, 07:27 AM The should have built it taller; perhaps the roof toping out at 1776 feet with a spire taking it to 2100 feet to represent the 21st century.
Also...They should have built the upper floors as strong as the base and incased all the beams in reinforced concrete. And they should have used in sturdier and thicker beams. This thing should have been built to the last the age of all ages!!!
ThatDarnSacramentan September 6th, 2010, 07:30 AM ^^ You should watch Life After People sometime. Amazingly, older buildings last longer than newer ones.

What an excuse! Extremists are what they are to destroy and propagate their agenda. The attack was motivated based on the hate for Americans, we known that to be from the view that American society is perceived to be Christians' rather than the Muslim. However, this building is been constructed proves the strength and beauty of love.
I am already imaging the lighting of this building in a clear night sky with brilliant colors.

PaulFCB September 6th, 2010, 05:18 PM In my opinion it's not a worthy successor of the Twin Towers, maybe if they would have made it taller or if they made Freedom Tower 1 & 2 positioned similar to the old WTC, kinda of a modern replica.
I know some people wanted to build 2 new towers almost similar to the old ones but it failed ( I would have liked that really ), did anyone propose a 2nd tower similar to this one?
SSD Darth Vader September 6th, 2010, 05:54 PM hm, why they build this tower only 1776 feet hight(with spire, without spire it will be less hight) it isn't so tall among modern supertall(look at China's , Far East's supertall)

DinoVabec September 6th, 2010, 07:09 PM Aaaaaahh, you people "cryin' " about new twins, or how dissatisfied you are with the new complex, you just don't understand architecture, modern architecture, you don't understand new york city and you don't understand what this complex means to the city and its citizens...:ohno:
waddler September 6th, 2010, 07:57 PM ^^ Well...Isn't New York mostly about mixed people and, of course, mixed ideas and feelings? I, for one, am not cryin' about new towers. I like the new design, and I think that whether it were for the twins to be rebuild or the Freedom tower, IMHO it looks or would've looked great anyway you take it  Clearly this project is awesome, the towers, the huge fountains.. a true project and memorial in the same time that suits New York.
Of course some people are "cryin' " about new twins, especially the people that haven't got a chance to see the old ones. When I was small like 6 years old and I was watching different movies like.. Home Alone for instance, and when I saw the towers I think you can guess what my biggest dream was in that moment, and from then on :) Till shit happened and I realized I'll never be able to see them cause the towers are gone. So cut us some slack! I seriously understand what this complex means to the city, and I share this feeling. But you too have to understand what the Twins meant to people before, which was probably equally important. Cheers :)

hm, why they build this tower only 1776 feet hight(with spire, without spire it will be less hight) it isn't so tall among modern supertall(look at China's , Far East's supertall)
Because in the USA they build quality towers. I'm not saying there aren't great ones in Asia, HK has some of my favourite towers in the world but the most 'new' skyscrapercities in China build very tall but most of them lack quality.
Why does it always have to be taller? It is freakin tall and besides that a fantastic design just like the rest of NY's supertalls that are U/C or proposed.
REAPER666 94 September 6th, 2010, 08:14 PM i mentioned the tags thing quite a while back in the thread, it needs to be sorted.

PaulFCB September 6th, 2010, 08:31 PM I lived in New York before 9/11/01 and the Twin Towers were a symbol for me among others if not my favorites.
Since I lived in Midtown Manhattan I wasn't always over there, but I had other monumental buildings just around the corners.
When I was a kid I remember seeing some advertisements with Marlboro and a image of Manhattan from a helly over the harbor and that was just months before leaving for New York.
In my first day in New York I remember going to a store on 23rd or 14th ( can't remember exactly ) street to buy some basic stuff and remember it was just around the corner from 5th Avenue and at the far end the Twin Towers, so it was a monumental first view of them and was fascinated to see them :D.
For me the "Twins" are a eternal symbol of the city whatever someone would say, I would have always preferred to see them rebuilt or if not, a modern version of them as a 2nd Freedom Tower just like in that render waddler quoted. In a way, when I will go back to see the place I grew up in, it would be a very weird sensation to watch that image without them even if of course, anybody would say "I could have been used to from tv, internet, pictures" since then. 9 years and I can't confirm that.

I agree with you 10000000000%..:) I'm in that group of people too...And I would give anything to see them but this is just not goin' to happen..And people don't understand that this what is being built right now is better than old twins..Yes, they were great and amazing, but this is even more great...So I don't know why people bashing the height and design of the new tower one and why they think that this is just some ordinary building which is "replacement" for old twins..And every few pages in this thread someone wants to rebuild the twins..It's really annoying already..We all want them back and there are threads to talk about that...This one is about the new wtc..
Uaarkson September 7th, 2010, 03:21 AM Those renderings with an extra "Freedom Tower" thrown in look like absolute shit. How can you people think that putting a second tower right on the graves of 3000 people is a good idea?
metsfan September 7th, 2010, 03:46 AM What would really i think "make it better" for a lot of people, is roof height 1776 feet, and 2 of them, one with the spire. It isn't going to happen, it can't, the remaining area is too small to build a twin, it wouldn't look right at ground level either really, just in the skyline.
I am just happy they are above street level and other buildings are commencing. For the longest time that whole area was just a big hole in the ground, now it's a full on 100% construction site.

Imagine what it was like for an eight year old, like me. I had no clue what the hell was going on. I never even saw footage of it until I was twelve, yet I still remember that day vividly.
waddler September 7th, 2010, 06:35 AM ^^ Same, I was an 8 year old when it happened and I heard the older students talking about it in school, but I had no idea about it.
spiller9 September 7th, 2010, 06:36 AM It has gone quickly indeed. Over the years 9/11 has gone from "the global event that happened 2 or 3 years ago" to something that happened almost a decade ago...it is firmly etched into history and is definately no longer part of the present (which it seemed to be not that long ago). It will be something that my children (that dont yet exist) curiously ask me about in the years to come (much the same with me as a child in regards to WW2).
Still, we dont forget.

I was 9...I still remember the moment when friend of mine told us that some plain crashed into the building..We were at playground..When I came home it was on all tv channels...I was watchin' CNN then...
burnside September 7th, 2010, 11:20 AM I see we're back to the aesthetics of the tower again.
When I consider how well it meets the existing skyline, how the materials echo many of the surrounding towers, how well it sets off and complements Battery Park City, what it will look like from other buildings in the area, the way it plays off against the memorial fountains and plaza, and how well it integrates with street and below-street functions, I think it's very well done indeed.
If there's an aspect I'm still somewhat ambivalent about, that would be the slight strangeness of the spire and its various elements. But even the Empire State got fussed about with for awhile until some satisfying way to 'finish' it was worked out.
Very handsome building.
Eastern37 September 7th, 2010, 12:29 PM I was only 5 when this happened  so I can't remember it at all, but i do remember watching it some years after....

It's a good thing I was older. Still, it was a shocking way to end my childhood. Up until that day, I had always thought that the US was the most powerful force in the world, impervious to any foriegn attack. I was wrong. I know now that we are actually quite vulnerable.

They don't make single monitors with a higher resolution than that, so I figure those pics are just too big. Nice shots, though!

On Fox News? Then it can't be good. Or if it is, it's been connected somehow to the evil/monument/invasion that "represents" the mosque that is "only" 4 blocks away. As well as arguments such as terrorism and destruction...

I'd say it's a safe bet that some people died within the footprint of the new tower one, as well. That said, what they are doing is the correct thing. The memorials should be wonderful.

Not really, they didn't mention the mosque or the construction unions. It was mainly an overview of the project and reflections from people whose relatives died on 9/11, one being a window-washer.

hoosier September 8th, 2010, 04:50 AM We all knew that once this tower's foundation was constructed it would shoot up like a weed. It took a LONG time to completely construct the foundation, but now that it is done, this tower is growing at a very nice pace.
Handbanana September 8th, 2010, 05:35 AM I really love this tower. My only real complaint is no outdoor observation deck. Really, you can't have the WTC without the rooftop observation deck. One World Trade Center
New York, New York
Base & Curtain Wall
http://www.som.com/content.cfm/one_world_trade_center (http://www.som.com/content.cfm/one_world_trade_center)
The tower rises from a podium wall base whose square plan – 200 feet by 200 feet – is the same size as the footprints of the original Twin Towers. The podium wall base is 185 feet tall and consists of laminated prismatic glass and welded aluminum screens. It is clad in more than 2000 pieces of prismatic glass; each measures 4 feet by 13 feet 4 inches with varying prismatic profiles. The design utilizes the optical properties of prismatic glass to reflect, refract and transmit light in various spectrums to create a dynamic, shimmering glass surface that drapes the tower’s base. The prismatic glass was developed over the course of four years in conjunction with some of the world’s top glass manufacturers, who worked with the architects to achieve the desired visual qualities and to produce the innovative prismatic glass.
For the curtain wall, architects worked with industry experts to develop glass of a new monumental scale that is capable of withstanding the wind pressure of a super-tall building as well as stringent security requirements. The 5’ by 13’4” insulated glass panels span the full 13’-4” floor-to-floor height with no intermediate mullion – a first in skyscraper construction. These glass panels allow for maximum daylighting and impart monumental scale to the project. The eight corners of the building are clad with stainless steel panels, with each panel spanning the full height of a floor.

So, ummm, do existing supertalls not use glass, or do they not have wind pressure ?

I know how strong glass is - the quote implied that for 1WTC they have had to invent [I]new[I] type of glass to be strong enough for wind loading on a supertall. Clearly that is false - we already have glass-clad supertalls.
I don't think floor-to-floor height glass cladding is a "first" either.
