Would be great to have a building so much higher, But really, how high? When is high enough, enough? You cannot change the height of current tower, even 1 floor would destroy the current design, that is because to extend what is being built ( allready perfect triangles) would just look terrible! This is what is being built, DEAL WITH IT!

WTC Taps Fuel Cells

High-End Energy Efficiency for Towers

By ANTON TROIANOVSKI (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/search/term.html?KEYWORDS=ANTON+TROIANOVSKI&bylinesearch=true)

Late last month, six box-shaped objects each almost as large as a shipping container arrived at the World Trade Center site on six trucks, were picked up by a crane, and deposited at the bottom of the construction pit near the intersection of Liberty Street and Church Street.

http://m.wsj.net/video/20101031/103010fuelcells/103010fuelcells_512x288.jpg (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/#)

Some 30% of the electricity to power the four towers going up on the World Trade Center site will come from fuel cells. WSJ's Anton Troianovski looks at how builders are trying to reduce the development's reliance on the New York power grid.

The contents of the nondescript cargo: six fuel cells, which together will provide about 30% of the power for towers 3 and 4 of the World Trade Center office complex. Once the cells start providing power, the World Trade Center site will become one of the biggest fuel-cell installations in the world, the developers say.

Fuel cells have been a closely watched technology as concerns about greenhouse-gas emissions have increased. They create electricity through chemical reactions rather than by burning something. As a result, the major byproducts are water and heat.

Fuel cells already power some energy-guzzling commercial properties such as hospitals, supermarkets and bottling plants. But the technology still is in the relatively early stages of being used on a broad scale in commercial buildings because it's complicated and often more expensive than conventional energy sources. Delivering those fuel cells, the likes of which will also power towers 1 and 2, was a key step in outfitting the buildings with the energy-efficient technology that developers Silverstein Properties Inc. and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will be touting as they face the daunting task of filling millions of square feet of new office space.

Constructing the skyscrapers with the latest in green-building technology was also a priority for government agencies and public-interest groups in the wake of the Twin Towers' destruction. Gov. David Paterson said in 2008 that the new World Trade Center would be "an exemplar of environmental sustainability" and that he could "think of few sites in the country where the symbolism of this is more important."

Anton Troianovski for The Wall Street Journal Silverstein Properties delivered fuel cells to the tower site.

http://si.wsj.net/img/BTN_insetClose.gif
http://si.wsj.net/public/resources/images/NY-AO886_NYWTC1_G_20101031171425.jpg

The fuel cells are one example of high-end energy efficiency. The old World Trade Center took in huge amounts of water from the Hudson River for cooling and energy generation. The new complex will include a smaller river-water plant to reduce the impact on the wildlife in the Hudson, and instead will take much of its electricity from the fuel cells, which use a chemical process to convert natural gas to electricity. The fuel cells are being paid for by the developers and the state of New York.
"If we can demonstrate that fuel cells work, that they can be highly effective, that they can achieve energy-saving goals, we hope that other owners of buildings and office buildings will choose to adopt them in the future," said Janno Lieber, who heads the WTC project project for developer Larry Silverstein.

Tower 4, which is being built by Mr. Silverstein, and Tower 1, being built by the Port Authority, are scheduled to be complete in 2013. The timing of the completion of towers 2 and 3 will depend on market conditions. On Oct. 23, a day when three of the fuel cells were being lowered into place, another crane was delivering some of the trees that will dot the 9/11 memorial.

WTC Taps Fuel Cells

I'm sure I mentioned this a couple of years ago, but where does the hydrogen come from? (I assume it is a hydrogen fuel cell)
a hydrogen fuel cell is only as clean as the source of electricity used to produce hydrogen.
I would think fair enough if it is used as back up if there is a powercut, but if it is used continuously, then there is the power needed to produce the H2, plus pollution from transporting the hydrogen to the WTC.

Incredible progress though, I am amazed how quickly it is going up, and how small #7 looks now!

It's all about quality, rights and safety of the construction workers and the rights of the people in general and thier ability to oppose the government in aspects of project development.

In china there are no such things and thus no such problems to delay progress. You get in the way and they make you move, you don't like what is being done you need to put up and shut up. So all take my rights over fastly built, mediocre quality buildings.

Yeah we will see how China reacts when one of it's fast-and-furiously build superskyscrapers ever gets hit by a terrorist attack (which will be sad, still). Or do they already build towers that can withstand this? The new WTC1 will probably withstand alot of jumbojets and even when the world's come to an end, it's massive metal core will simply float into space

It would have been cool if the roof were 1776ft plus a shorter spire. Any reason why this option wasn't explored? Either way a great building maybe halfway in height surpassing WTC 7 by the new year.

David Childs designed a building with a 1,776 foot roof and a 2,001 foot spire, but it was rejected in favor of Daniel Libeskind's original idea of a 1,776 foot spire.

Simfan34

^^I always wondered, would a 2,001ft height be considered to be in poor taste?

^^^^
China uses cheap material rather than strong and with safety features.

More so cheap labor and supplies thanks to no unions.

I'd prefer a 1776ft roof and have the 408ft spire, so it would be 2184ft! Yay!

Fulton Street is and has always been a one-way street (westward), so it'll be the same when they extend it across the WTC site. Vesey Street (north of 1WTC) will also be a one-way street, going eastward. Greenwich Street (which cuts directly through the middle of the site) is also a one-way street, going southward, and Church Street is a one-way street going northward.

I imagine there will be a traffic light at the intersection of Greenwich and Fulton, but I dunno about Fulton and West Street.

According to the original construction timetable from the October 2008 PA report, the cladding was to be begin in the third quarter of this year. The entire podium glass was to be finished by second quarter of 2011. Obviously that's not going to happen.

At least the steel is still rising. I'll take more height over glass.

Eh, you never know. I say it's still POSSIBLE to have all of the podium glass installed by the end of Q2 2011. The steel and concrete have both been rising at a rate of about a floor a week, and even the fireproofing seems to be following that trend. If the glass can also be installed at a floor a week, and considering the fact that there's really only the equivalent of 8 mechanical floors, they should be able to knock out the majority of the podium glass in just 8 weeks. Of course, that would still leave the area around the lobby and 2nd floor (80 feet, or equivalent of 6 floors), which can't begin until they complete the damn blast wall, but as long as they finish the blast wall by the end of April 2011 (and have the glass around the 8 mechanical floors installed by then), that should leave them enough time to install the 6 floors of glass over the blast walls by the end of the 2nd quarter.

Even if they miss this target, they'll almost certainly have it done by the 10th anniversary at least. And even if the blast wall prevents them from meeting THAT target, then I'm sure they'll at least have the glass prisms installed on the mechanical floors.

Then he deserve it..That's the conclusion from last discussion on that toppic...And I have no idea what this has to do with 1 WTC..

Does anyone know if this structure can work as a hull-core structure? Or is it the concrete core taking most of the lateral loads??

The structure is a tube/tree hybrid. The perimeter columns take most of the lateral loads and the core takes most of the gravity loads.

While I'm waiting for the cladding of the office floors I wonder whats going on below. Are there any news about the blast wall? I ask this because the small blast wall in the southeast took a half year and i don't think we see some basement cladding before the blast wall and the stairways in the corners are completed. Or am i wrong?

Yes, I've never posted in this forum before, but I thought I'd put this up for laughs, as 1 WTC was prominently in a dream I had last night.

I dreamt I was the President of the US (I think I was Obama, but can't be sure). The tower had just been finished (but I don't think there was a spire) and I was on the top for some kind of inauguration ceremony. So I kind of wandered away from the Secret Service, to go look over the edge, and I saw the construction elevator on the side. It was very rickety and jury-rigged - it was a long plank of wood, like about 1 foot across and maybe 10 feet long, supported by ropes at both ends. I was seriously thinking of taking it down to the bottom for some reason, that maybe I should rope myself off on the thing in case it got tippy, but the streets below didn't seem THAT far away, so I was debating whether or not to rope myself off when I took it down... anyway, I think at that point I woke up, and tried to remember the dream so I could put it up here for giggles. Hope you enjoyed.

1. Pay attention to your punctuation.

2. The name "freedom tower" was part of the Liebeskind master plan. This was changed YEARS ago. The official name of this tower is One World Trade Center. When you call it freedom tower at least some people probably don't understand what you mean.

3. It should be clear that they won't reuse the twin towers logo for the new WTC. But I fear i don't see your point.

Well, I feel sorry for my so called fellow countryman and his poor English. I can only hope that he once will take a serious English course. I'm certian it will be clad in marble or granite, not sure which one, but that won't be done til later on in the construction. Expect the base cladding to go up before you see the core at the base clad.

The lobby won't be finished until the building is almost topped out. The reason is that they still need to get people and material into the building, and by keeping everything open it keeps things running smoothly.

Basically just ventilation structures for the PATH trains underground, but they will also have emergency exit stairwells from the underground museum and a freight elevator. Also the northern one will have a concession stand.
