I think this building alone is roughly something like 3.3 billion USD, and the new WTC as a whole is far over 20 billion.

Every person on earth except the few people actually in charge of this project wanted twins back in some form. Im not sure how that happened but real new yorkers got the short end of the stick because of the mayor, silverstein, and a few others. Hell even they knew what the people wanted, but still wouldnt budge. This project is absolutely magnificent and unlike any other ever made but other than the memorial part it would fit right into any other cities skyline. If twins were made it would be a new york only type of project and they would look out of place in any other city. This project is really nice and I have no problem with it and its what its going to be now, but I think that for the rest of time people will still always be saying what if they built newer and better twins.

this building is my favourite one ^^ but i have one question how expensive is this building? or how expensive will this building be after its completed?
is there someone who can answer this question?

Very expensive..:)

...here it is Friday night and still no glass yet. My guess for the 16th is still in the running! It sure looks like they are getting ready for it. Materials usually arrive shortly before they plan to use them, and it looks like glass has been delivered over a week ago.

Hi, I'm new here. I have already read the forum for more than 1 year, but I have now decided to participate actively in the forum.

1 World Trade Center is my favourite supertall project! And I can not wait to finally see the cladding being installed. Since July, everytime I visit this thread I hope so bad to see some pictures of the tower with the cladding - in vain. But I think now the time has finally come..:)

Well actually, thats not entirely true. I believe that the fireproofing has concrete mixed in it, increasing its strength. Im still not sure why they didnt just encase all the steel in concrete if theyre so damned concerned about fire.

No.
First: fireproofing is required by law. So it'n not that "they're so damned concerned about fire", but it is required for obvious safety precautions, and the quantity and kind of fireproofing depends by the structure that is being treated.

Second: encasing the steel in concrete creates a far greater load on the structure than a light composite like fireproofing. Greater loads means different beams used, bigger base columns, more space used in general and (unnecessary) increase in costs. In one word: dumb. Since there is an alternate solution given the specifications of the building.

Martin S

Encasing steel in concrete will increase its fire resistance but can also increase its structural strength. A column at the base of a tall building will be subject to very high compressive stresses and, in the case of an H - column, the most likely failure mode is due to local buckling of the arms of the H, rather than crushing of the steel. Encasing in concrete prevents the steel from buckling and, therefore, increases the amount of load that it can carry, even if the concrete itself takes none of the direct load of the structure.

There are different techniques for fire-proofing. Encasing in concrete is one technique but it does add weight to the building and can be expensive to apply. Sprayed on mineral fibre is cheap and effective but cannot be used in exposed work because of its appearance. Intumescent paint is preferred by architects as it does not affect the appearance of the column and adds little or on weight to the building. In the event of fire, the paint bubbles up to form an insulating layer which delays the heat of the fire from getting into the structural column - which is the whole point of fireproofing.

And, withal, this is the thread that first brought me to Skyscrapercity.

I have a question. Does anyone know if that fountain is running at maximum capacity over there? Or is it still in its testing phase. I'm saying this because the water flow seems a bit low, I was expecting it to be a little more.. potent :D

The water flow seems to be low, but it isn't. The waterfall is 240 meter wide! I don't know how much water they need to produce a constant waterfall of that size, but it's a lot. Don't expect the kind of continuous spray the Niagara Falls or Victoria Falls produce. The hole is not deep enough.

I like it as it is.

But this is not the right place for this topic. Go on here: National September 11 Memorial & Museum
(http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1144445)

Those corner clads look really big will those be going on the higher floors?

NO. Those corner clads look pretty equal to 90 degree. Only the 20th floor and the parapet will have 90 degree corners!

Thanks for correcting me and being more precise (was unaware of how the concrete encasing helped the beam ). Appreciate it!

What about if they simply apply the concrete to the beam on the ground then hoist it into place already encased?

Also, the USA is basically the only country in the world that doesn't use metric. It's ridiculous.

The really crazy thing is that if a US politician proposed using metric, s/he would be based for "caving in to foreign interests."

Interesting method...however, it looks to have slower pace than required to match the whole construction speed (although it´s rather slow ;)). Anyway, if the cladding process becomes the bottleneck in the construction process, the contractors can consider the use of tower cranes at least partially.

Some towers are able to use the window washing unit, or BMU (building maintenance unit) to pick up the glass and hang it a few floors down to the workers.

Looks like everyone is pretty impressed by the facade,

ALSO LOOKS Like it will rise about the same rate as the steel

By Julie Shapiro

DNAinfo Reporter/Producer

LOWER MANHATTAN — The first stainless steel and sparkling glass panels for the facade on One World Trade Center began to rise this week and are already attracting attention from blocks away.

"It looks good," said Angela Medina, 20, a student who was visiting the site from New Jersey on Monday. "It’s going to look different from all the other buildings around. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing it when it’s done."

The tower won’t open until 2013, but workers installed the first pieces of the stainless steel exterior on three corners of the 20th floor on Sunday. They then began adding glass on Monday, said Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority.

In all, the 1,776-foot skyscraper, formerly known as the Freedom Tower, will feature 12,000 glass panels, each of which is 5 feet wide and more than 13 feet tall.

The facade panels will form eight tall triangles of glass and steel, which grow alternately wider and narrower as they approach the top of the building. David M. Childs designed the tower’s glimmering exterior to refract light and change its appearance depending on the weather and the viewer’s position.

The first 20 floors of the building, which include the lobby and mechanical space, will have a more porous facade made of prismatic glass and an aluminum screen.

Construction workers at the World Trade Center site were said they were impressed by the first glimpse of the building’s future skin this week.

"Officially, I’m not allowed to have a comment," said one worker who is helping build One World Trade Center. "Unofficially, I think it looks sweet."

"You can start to see the scope of the building," another worker added. "You can see what it’s going to be."

Structural steel for the $3.2 billion tower has risen to the 48th floor and will continue going up at the rate of one floor per week, Coleman said. Soon, the facade will be following behind at the same rate, he said.

When the building is complete, it will stand tallest in the city and country.

Steven Carter, 58, a pedestrian manager who has been posted on Vesey Street near the site for the past two months, said Monday that the visible progress was encouraging.

"The way it’s going, it’s gonna look beautiful," said Carter, a Queens resident. "It’s gonna look fabulous.

RKOwens4

Bit of trivia: If the entire length of the history of earth (4.5 billion years) were to be represented in height by the height of the roof of 1WTC (1368 feet), and you made a scale comparison next to the building representing the period of time that human civilization has been around (10,000 years), the human civilization tower would be less than 1/25th of an inch tall. (10,000/4,500,000,000 = 0.00000222. 1,368 feet x 0.00000222 = 0.003 feet.)

OT, I know, but thought it was an easy way to visualize how short of a time we've been around.

Looks like all the renders will have to be redone. The cladding that is in place either has protective film on every other panel....or they suprised us by not showing that the cladding will look more similar to the twins.

It just looks like there is a protective film. It might be a placeholder that is installed every other piece.

Very unusual! Obviously no glass installed in that panel, but you can see the bottom stainless steel edge, so it IS real. I guess the mystery will be solved soon enough.

ZenSteelDude said it will take time to get first row on the place because all the glass obove will be placed according to that first row..So they have to do it perfect..That's why we see this "unusual" method..Once they place every piece of the 20th floor, all above will be easier to place..

I see you point. Interessting conclusion.

World Trade Center Tower Begins to Show Its Shimmering Face
By Matt Dunning
UPDATED Nov. 17
Already 48 stories high, the rising steel and concrete skeleton of the World Trade Center site’s Tower 1 is all but impossible to miss.

But what’s easy to overlook is the first glimpse of the building’s transformation from a drab construction site to a stunning, 21st century, 104-story office tower.

On Sunday, Nov. 13, crews installed the first pieces of its shiny steel-and-glass façade, on three corners and in the center of the 20th floor's eastern wall. The windows are the first to be installed anywhere on the site since the rebuilding began.

"This is another tangible sign of progress that people who walk past the site can see as we work to get this tower completed in 2013,” said Steven Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority, the building’s developer.

The very first pieces of the façade were bolted on to the northeast, southeast and southwest corners of the tower’s steel frame at the 20th story. Crews spent most of Monday morning and afternoon putting up the first two flat window panels near the center of the floor’s eastern wall, a painstaking process that must be done with absolute precision because the rest of the installation depends on it.

“Once they get rolling, they’ll be able to install glass panels at a rate of one floor per week,” Coleman said.

One at a time, each steel and glass panel is wheeled to the tower’s outer edge with a hand-operated forklift, lowered into place and then bolted tight to the tower’s frame. Glass is added in once the steel panel is secure.

When the 1,776-foot tower is complete, crews will have placed more than 12,000 flat panels and 700 corner pieces. It will take approximately 160 panels to wrap one of the larger, lower floors in the tower, while the upper floors will need around 100 panels.

Installation of the 13-foot-high panels began on the 20th floor, Coleman said, because the Port Authority will need open access to the tower’s base, containing the mechanical equipment, for several more months.

“There is a lot of equipment that still needs to be loaded onto the mechanical floors in the , so the glass wall must come in later,” Coleman said. “Additionally, with all the activity at the base of the building now, we scheduled the wall later to minimize damage.”

Coleman said [B]installation of the prismatic glass wall on the tower’s base—meant to obscure the mechanical equipment behind it—would likely begin in early 2012."

1WTC will make its way into the Top 100 of New Yorks tallest buildings very soon. For the moment the Time-Life Building (build 1954, height: 178m) stays the 100th tallest building in New York. The Millenium Hotel is just a few inches/centimeters taller and will be overtaken by 1WTC very soon, too.

so what's this chess-board like cladding all about?

The render shows pieces that are equal and next to each other.

Why is there a normal glass piece, then one with a hole, and then another glass piece etc?

Temporary?

Yes, it has been a problem for me for a couple weeks or so. The indexing is screwed up. Your post was showing as #17699 on page 885. I then clicked page 886 and your post magically became #17707 (or maybe 17708) on 886. Refreshed browser and it was back to being 17699 on 885. Sometimes it takes a few refreshes or clicking last page to see new posts. I don't think this has been a problem in other threads for me, even ones that have a 'phantom' page (extra page number).

Edit: This message sometimes shows as being #17700 and is the last on page #885. Other times OldWorldResident's post shows as being 17700 and is the last on 885. While other times this post is 17709 on page 886. I think Draegen's post (the one after mine) showed as being the first on page 886 one time. Clicking page 886 sometimes reloads page 885. Not sure if reloading page 885 ever brings up page 886.

It's because mods/admins sometimes post invisible posts, which normal users can't see. So they count in the number of posts and pages but for the rest you don't see them, so that's why sometimes your on for example page 888 and you see 889 but can't enter it. And it also messes with the post numbers of the latest posts, so actually you are seeing everything just some not interesting moderator nonsense you don't see.

Irrelevant. The entire purpose of the World Trade Center is to serve as a hub of global commerce; although unnecessary, it's not at all unreasonable to be built using materials from around the world. To make the Chinese glass a point of contention is irrational xenophobia at best.

Argentina is a terrible country. I'm glad I was only there for a week. Peru was even better.......Peru! In fact, I go back to Peru in a few weeks, ELO.....still far away from Argentina.

BTW, Cesar Pelli spends his money in America. I've met him, he never mentioned he was from Argentina, probably embarrassed.
C'mon dude...just GO...GO AWAY.

Back to toppic, how is the glass attached?? It's outside the frame, so I suppose it's glued.

You mean the glass on the frame or cladding piece to the building?

Why does this tower have so few vertical columns when the originals had so many?

there is an unbelievable amount of vertical columns inside of the tower, the netting blocks a lot of your vision:bash:

Why does this tower have so few vertical columns when the originals had so many?

Because it's been 40 years and we've learned a few things on weight displacement.

Why does this tower have so few vertical columns when the originals had so many?

Because it has seriously strong concrete/steel core which is like s spine of this tower...Originals had only steel core so there were those vertical columns to help this steel core..

The very first skyscrapers appeared around 125 years ago. I wonder what the architects and engineers of those times would have thought of the glass curtain walls and other engineering marvels and technology of today?
