DarthVaper77 December 24th, 2010, 11:47 AM I'm new to this wonderful site and wanted my first post to be in this thread. I loved the old World Trade Center--were probably my favorite buildings and had the privilege of standing on the roof, and now I can't wait to see the Freedom Tower completed. I love architecture and especially skyscrapers so this message board is really great. So Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone:)

The spire is basically going to be a middle finger pointing towards the middle east from 1776 feet in the air surround by a brand new couple blocks of class A office space. New york is amazing.

Simfan34 December 25th, 2010, 06:56 AM Cladding's coming along fast!
djm160190 December 25th, 2010, 01:39 PM From some angles I think the cladding looks great...other angles I think it looks cheap and poor quality...
dfiler December 25th, 2010, 02:26 PM How did this idea of cladding quality get put into people's heads? Seriously, where did the meme start?
Did a developer boast about quality and then that boast get written into an article with a bit of nationalistic pride thrown in? EDIT: this is a genuine question. I'm truly interested if this can be traced back to a particular article or press release. Did prominent British publication or tv program start this meme?
From a scientific perspective, the claims aren't based on logic or even photographic evidence. All glass panels look wavy depending on the lighting, temperature, distance, and reflected scenery. Yes, the heat of sunlight alone will make the cladding of any skyscraper look wavy. Not just look wavy, but actually be wavy. Thermal expansion is present no matter how "high quality" the glass.

As far as I'm aware there are no such publications...I'm basing MY OPINION on what pictures are posted here. I understand the science behind why glass is wavy (it's been explained enough times on here). From some angles I think the cladding looks superb from other I don't.
Otie December 25th, 2010, 05:09 PM This discussions for now are irrelevant since there is no an official publication nor video explaining glass quality. Until then, you all shut up and enjoy the images.

actually the new weather reports from weather.com and weather.gov, they indicate as mush as 19 inches of snowfall will hit our area, and i only live 40 miles from the world trade center site.
so this snow storm might stop the progress of the tower 1 progress until wednesday. i will keep you all posted.
seb.nl December 26th, 2010, 09:37 PM Just heard it on Ducht evening news :)
Zensteeldude December 27th, 2010, 01:05 AM I live 25 miles west of Manhattan. Snow falling at 2 to 3 inches an hour, about 6 inches on the ground, wind gusts up to 45mph. (As of 7pm Sunday the 26th) It'll be Tuesday or Wednesday before the site returns to full productivity.
azn_man12345 December 27th, 2010, 01:25 AM Hi all, azn_man12345 here. Ive been interested in architecture and skyscrapers for about 3 years now, and Ive been following 1WTC/Freedom Tower pretty closely throughout the years.
Ive been on SSC for about a year and a half now, but never made a profile or anything.
So I told myself once 1WTC was double the height of the tallest building in my city, Id make a profile. As of the December 14 update, 1WTC was 614 feet tall, although by now its probably higher. Since my tallest building is only 325 feet, I guess theres no better time than now.
1WTC is one of my favorite skyscrapers going up now, and Im so excited to see it done, and now, I can follow it even more closely then before.
If anyones ever looking for me, Ill probably be here, or the Shanghai Tower thread.
Thank you guys for having me and Ill try my best to be a good part of the SSC community and family :)
kingsc December 27th, 2010, 03:48 AM welcome to SSC. It snowing so hard out here and I can feel my face.
Swiddle December 27th, 2010, 07:04 AM Current conditions (Central Park): Heavy Snow Freezing Fog, 22 °F (-6 °C)
Current forecast for overnight: Snow and widespread blowing snow before 5am, then areas of blowing snow and a chance of snow after 5am. The snow could be heavy at times. Some thunder is also possible. Low around 20. Wind chill values as low as -1. Very windy, with a north wind between 38 and 40 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 12 to 18 inches possible.
And for NYC as a whole:
A BLIZZARD WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST MONDAY.
* HAZARDS...HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS...WITH CONSIDERABLE
BLOWING AND DRIFTING OF SNOW WITH NEAR ZERO VISIBILITY AT
TIMES.
* ACCUMULATIONS...15 TO 20 INCHES...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS
UP TO 2 FEET POSSIBLE.
* WINDS....NORTH WINDS OF 25 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 60 MPH ARE
EXPECTED THROUGH LATE TONIGHT.
That's nasty. I imagine such wind gusts could potentially tear apart the cocoon and cause other damage, and it'll drive snow well inside each floor. This same storm gave me about a foot of snow way down in central NC.
spectre000 December 27th, 2010, 07:15 AM I thought they'd hit the 54th floor by the end of the year. Looks doubtful now.

Thats nothing. Downtown Boston (in particular Copley Square and State Street) are facing gusts well over 65mph. Corridors of tall buildings along with extremely close proximity to the coast can cause very very high winds in the city. Last month I was going to the Hancock tower for a meeting and almost fell over from the wind outside, and the building was swaying like crazy. I can only imagine it being worse in NY. Those estimates are far too low.

well i live in brewster ny just 40 miles away from the tower and right now barometer machine is picking up winds up to 62 miles per hour. and i live in a house, imagine to winds ontop of a skyscraper like tower 1, especially being near the 90 degree angle of the city of new york and the ocean.

Believe it or not the smaller ugly brown buildings are Stuyvesant Town—Peter Cooper Village a luxery private residential development built in the 1940's.
The taller ugly brown brick towers are Waterside Towers, residential and built in 1974.

Пятница December 28th, 2010, 06:32 PM i want a snow^^
azn_man12345 December 28th, 2010, 08:08 PM Wow, some of the snow pictures look amazing, but did they damage the coccoon(sp?) thing?
I saw a few pages back but I dont recall anyone answering: why are they not cladding one of the corners of the building yet?
And also, when is the roof planned to top out? Ive heard the end of 2011, is that correct?
OldWorldResident December 29th, 2010, 12:48 AM And also, when is the roof planned to top out? Ive heard the end of 2011, is that correct?
Yes, some optimists said end of 2011. But they also hoped for a mild winter. At the moment it doesn't look like that.
As you know they're in the 52nd floor today. That means 47 floors from here to the roof, some of them are tall mechanical floors. All this in only 54 weeks. It's possible, but there's not much wiggle room (is that the correct word? i'm not american :) ) for any kind of delays.
Oh well, december 2011, january 2012, who cares?! :)

I guess some reflection. The glass is fine. No damage. It's clearly visible on Athinaios 8th pic.
DarthVaper77 December 29th, 2010, 06:24 PM I'm sure this will look great when it is finished, but does anyone else think the angled section, where the corners come together and right above the podium (I guess is the proper term, IDK) should have gone all the way to the ground. Or does everyone pretty much like the way it is turning out. I'm sure we all could talk about how we wished the final design would have turned out until the cows come home, but I think it's still fun to think about. I'm just not sure I like the podium--it's kind of jarring for some reason. Again, I'm sure it will look great!!!

Philly Bud December 29th, 2010, 09:28 PM Pardon my naive question, but do weather conditions such as the the snow storm of a few days ago stop or slow construction? I'm guessing skyscraper construction doesn't come to a complete halt, but are some of the workers told to stay home for a few days or until the weather improves?
zapor1 December 29th, 2010, 09:34 PM Lots of workers probably weren't able to get to work yesterday and 2 days ago. I don't think it came to a complete halt, but slowed down by a lot.
David in Amsterdam December 29th, 2010, 09:39 PM This is slightly off-topic, but can someone tell me about the building under construction on the OTHER side of WTC 7 ? I was there a couple of weeks ago and was surprised to see what looked like a pretty substantial structure going up. It is on the corner of Barclay and Greenwich. Any info on how big/tall this will be?

How do you navigate the plows around thousands of cars and millions of people? Clearing up two feet of snow in Manhattan is more difficult than clearing six feet of snow anywhere in Alaska.

A little off topic, but you should see how lovely the Great Plains states get. After it snows it isn't even nice - it's just a bunch of brown slush/ice/snow pushed off to the side of the road. And it stays there until everything melts in the spring.

Otie December 31st, 2010, 04:54 PM World Trade Center Project Meets Construction Goals for First Time (http://www.dnainfo.com/20101230/downtown/world-trade-center-meets-construction-goals-for-first-time) dnaInfo.com
The World Trade Center site met all 13 of the goals the Port Authority set for the third quarter of 2010.
LOWER MANHATTAN — The World Trade Center site met all 13 of its construction goals for the third quarter of 2010, the Port Authority announced Thursday.
From July through September, the Port Authority started building the 9/11 memorial plaza, erected steel for the Santiago Calatrava-designed PATH station and made substantial progress on One World Trade Center, the Port said.
The report marked the first quarter that the Port Authority has met all of its milestones since executive director Chris Ward started setting specific, public goals two years ago.
"Things are moving forward in the right direction, and that’s what we want," said Catherine McVay Hughes, chairwoman of Community Board 1’s WTC Redevelopment Committee, which has closely followed the rebuilding.
But Ward also warned of some upcoming challenges in the Dec. 30 letter to Gov. David Paterson that accompanied the report.
One of the biggest setbacks to the World Trade Center project has been the years of delays at the cursed Deutsche Bank building, where two firefighters were killed in a 2007 fire.
The building is finally down to its last couple of stories, and the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., the building’s owner, is now scheduled to turn the cleared site over to the Port Authority in the first week of February.
The project lost at least two days of work because of this week’s snowstorm but would make up the time and would not miss the February deadline, an LMDC spokesman said.
The Port needs the site of the Deutsche Bank building to build a below-ground parking garage and vehicle screening center that will serve the new office towers and the memorial.
Another project that was at risk of falling behind was the winged PATH hub, because its schedule was dependent on the many companies that would fabricate the materials and build the structure, Ward said in his letter to Paterson. To further complicate matters, the station’s infrastructure overlaps with developer Larry Silverstein’s office towers.
"We will be focused closely on each of these sets of risks," Ward said in the letter.
The third-quarter report was released as the fourth quarter was drawing to a close, but the Port Authority usually waits several months to announce which milestones have been met.

A reminder of what WTC1 looked like ~1 year ago.
Spartan_X January 2nd, 2011, 02:42 PM Is 2011 the year when WTC1 is expected to be topped out ?
Partizany January 2nd, 2011, 03:08 PM About 55 floors to go.. so its hard to say... they have to built more than one floor per week.
Dr Drums January 2nd, 2011, 03:10 PM If they continue building at the same pace, I think it can be topped out at the end of this year.
RubenT January 2nd, 2011, 03:22 PM Keeping in mind the floors are getting smaller as they get higher, I think they will make the end of the year as well.
KillerZavatar January 2nd, 2011, 04:23 PM isn't it supposed to open in 2013. So i do not think the shedule for it is to top out this year already
RKOwens4 January 2nd, 2011, 04:27 PM The building is now at 613', with 755' to go. 755' is the equivalent of 57 floors. So if they go at a rate of a floor a week, and keeping in mind that there's 52 weeks in 2011, then it'll still be around the first week of february 2012 before they finish. BUT... that's only if they go at a floor a week. Their pace may quicken.

don't forget that after completing all floors there is still the massive spire that needs to be done
Slagathor January 2nd, 2011, 05:23 PM And what about vacation schedules? In some countries the construction sector stops for a few weeks altogether. What's that like in the US?
Zensteeldude January 2nd, 2011, 06:42 PM ^^ They won't shut down the site for vacations.
By my calculations they have 42 floors to build in 50 weeks (The goal is to top out on or near the 41st anniversary of the topping out of the original North Tower, December 21st 2011). The 105th floor is the roof and there are no floors 94 thru 99. Most of the floors above the 88th are double hight, like the mechanical floors in the base.
PS: The spire doesn't count in the official topping out.

spectre000 January 3rd, 2011, 06:17 AM Nice closeups of the corner pieces. The stainless steel gives the cladding that little extra "pop".
micrip January 3rd, 2011, 06:35 AM And what about vacation schedules? In some countries the construction sector stops for a few weeks altogether. What's that like in the US?
...the US takes less vacation than any country in the industrialized world...not like those slackers in Europe! Only thing that will slow it down is weather.

I agree. Christmas period coincides with Summer in Australia so we usually take annual leave(2-3 weeks annual leave) to coincide with any Chrissy shut-down of work places, leading to the 'standard' 4 wks Summer break Down Under. It also helps in that if we want to travel anywhere outside of Australia(as is popular - we are a nation of born explorers!) we need the extra time just to get where we are heading thanks to the tyranny of distance. I was very shocked with my last gf(an lovely Okie) that she only got 2 weeks(Annual leave) over the year. what a jip:( Still while our economy is going gangbusters, unlike Europe, we can afford our little luxuries - like 4wks off a year! ;)

dfiler January 3rd, 2011, 11:48 PM ^^ They won't shut down the site for vacations.

Thanks for the info.
It reminded me of a facet of this tower which I had forgotten. That is, how this tower will effect communication networks. Just like one of the original twins, nearly everything in lower manhattan with an antenna, will be talking to this tower.
This will have an impact on everyday life for millions of people. For example, mobile phone coverage got set back with the destruction of the original WTC. And even 9 years later, coverage remains poor. Replacing the communications hub of a megalopolis isn't exactly easy, especially when it is already experiencing rapid growth. When the new facilities are finished, all the communications companies are ready to put up some serious longterm infrastructure investment.
It will be fun to read about all the gear that eventually gets installed!

Just remember that this tower uses ultra-clear glass, not reflective nor tinted, so the sunlight can iluminate perfectly the office floors. By using this type of glass, the energy costs are reduced in a huge percent.
1WTC is on its way to get a GOLD LEED Certification, and that's better than just having "shinny glass". ;)

If state bails, 1 WTC scores
Buy Steve Cuozzo
All indications are that the marketing team for 1 World Trade Center will have nearly 600,000 square feet more to offer prospective tenants -- a rare instance of what's usually bad news for a landlord being good news.
Sources familiar with the Port Authority's fast-rising tower said the likelihood of the state Offices of General Services going through with a long-discussed lease there are increasingly remote.
Insiders cited an "expectation" it won't happen. We'll go farther out on a limb and say it's as dead as the Giants' playoff hopes, which just fell to mathematically zero.
The OGS "lease" was announced three years ago, along with a slightly larger one for the federal General Services Administration. Neither deal has been completed, however.
Now, Condé Nast has a letter of intent for 1 million square feet in the 2.6 million square-foot tower -- which just passed the halfway point and makes an arresting sight, especially to anyone walking west on Fulton Street. Several financial tenants are also kicking the tires.
Too much space leased to government offices automatically cheapens a commercial building's image. The last thing "iconic" 1 WTC needs are government workers hogging more than one-third of its floors at subsidized rents higher than public entities should be paying, but still far below market.
The PA, its partner Douglas Durst, and the leasing agent, Cushman & Wakefield's Tara Stacom, all declined to comment. An e-mail to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's spokesman, Josh Vlasto, was not returned.
The federal lease is still on the table, sources said. And the OGS lease is not formally dead. But a new governor committed to saving the state from fiscal collapse is not likely to look kindly on expensively relocating an agency whose tasks include providing state employees with parking spaces.
The Condé Nast talks have changed the dynamics of leasing at 1 WTC. The OGS would have moved into floors at the bottom of the tower. But Condé now wants the floors -- meaning the bureaucrats would have to go higher, where the rent would be higher too.

to the top of the antenna yea but that doesn't count in official height, it's roof is 1250 feet. the 101st floor of 1WTC is like 1254 feet or something, the 102nd being 1266 (or 1271 over the lower entrance of vessey street)

If I remember Zen's blueprints and comments, I believe the roof is the 105th floor at 1,334 ft 8 inches high. The top of the parapet is 1,368 ft. But that could be a different height (1,373) depending on where you measure from, N or S side.

You are correct in quoting me and the official hight from any side of the tower is 1,368 feet to the top of the parapet and 1,776 feet to the top of the spire.
Regardless of the officialdom and what ever criteria they come up with Tower One is to be 1,776 feet high and the top of the parapet is to be 1,368 feet high to memorialize the original North Tower.
The roof of Tower One is about 30 feet below the top of the parapet, in order to hide all the cooling towers and whatnot.

A parapet is a wall-like barrier at the edge of a roof, terrace, balcony or other structure. Where extending above a roof, it may simply be the portion of an exterior wall that continues above the line of the roof surface, or may be a continuation of a vertical feature beneath the roof such as a fire wall or party wall - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Yes there is. The former buildings here were destroyed in the biggest terrorist plot ever which, as you probably know, changed the whole world in many ways since then. The whole site is more than just 4 glass buildings going up. For many people this is more than a building, it's a symbol. And besided that, the whole complex has great attention to details which are, architecturally, very interesting.
You know you could expect an answer like this right ? ;)
Even if it was just another glass building, it would be a very BIG one. The biggest one in America even. It's changing the skyline of New York.
So, there are many reasons why this is more than 'just another glass building.'

I was wondering about that. If the glass is all that clear, with no tinting or reflecting layer, it would be unlivable in there when the summer sun hits.
But, shades would make the building look horrible.

which is exactly why the site deserved better architecture--"symbolic" as you put it. instead we're getting two "glass" towers and two "stumps" for a decade (that is if we're lucky and it actually gets built)
AlexanderCameron January 5th, 2011, 04:57 PM Great pictures of what will be a really great building on the New York skyline. :)
Question, what exactly is the purpose of the crane that appears to be attached to vertical tracks on the NW corner of the building? (An answer more elaborate than 'to lift things' would be great).
ramvid01 January 5th, 2011, 05:05 PM ^^ That crane is meant to lift construction materials to the lower floors so the two cranes above can concentrate on erecting the steel frame.

I agree, pull shades would look bad on it since it is all glass, but since they are going for Gold LEED certification it'll probably be some kind of automated shutter system for the entire building.
The one official render we have of the interior of a regular office floor of 1 WTC does appear to show some kind of indent on the ceiling for shutters/blinds/what have you.
But we all know who can answer this for certain... *fires up Zen signal*

Nomadd22 January 5th, 2011, 05:48 PM I wonder if the wall was designed that way because glass all the way to the floor would be a little unnerving for some. Or, just to give you a place to put your foot while you're staring out the window with a cup of coffee when you're suppose to be working.

Good question. I know in the originals they had a similar ledge there with vents for the air conditioning or heating.
I'll go with the coffee hypothesis, though. ;)

KenfromJersey January 5th, 2011, 10:57 PM Well, all I know is that pretty soon, I'll have an unobstructed view of the construction, then the topping out, and then the grand opening. :)
I agree that 7WFC is a nice building, but right now, it's in the way. ;)

Pfeuffer January 6th, 2011, 12:00 AM fabulous !
SaRaJeVo-City January 6th, 2011, 12:00 AM nice glass..
dfiler January 6th, 2011, 12:11 AM I agree, pull shades would look bad on it since it is all glass, but since they are going for Gold LEED certification it'll probably be some kind of automated shutter system for the entire building.
The one official render we have of the interior of a regular office floor of 1 WTC does appear to show some kind of indent on the ceiling for shutters/blinds/what have you.
But we all know who can answer this for certain... *fires up Zen signal*

No exterior pillars in that render? Is that accurate? Perhaps the observation deck levels are different than the rest of the floors?
If not, then we probably shouldn't draw window shade conclusions either.
