I was just about to comment on the trees. They look pretty sad right now, with concrete and construction materials spread amongst them.

I'm sure the trees will look great when they've grown in a bit. But epic??? They're forever doomed to be dwarfed by their surroundings, which are epic.
I think they are important and are there to lend some tranquility, which is a great reason to have them. Not that you need any reason to have trees.

A construction worker was injured yesterday at 1 World Trade Center when he fell 10 feet, sources said. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital after the 5:21 p.m. accident.

His condition was not released, but a source said he suffered a cut to his head. It's not clear why he fell.



The safety record so far has been pretty amazing all things considered. I read that 17 people died during the original WTC construction. So far 2 firefighters at the DBB, and I think two died (I know there was at least one) during 7WTC's building.

Depends on POV. If you look at the site directly from above, you will see the trees and the pools dominating everything else. :)

I know that its the same hight as the towers once was, and I did see that diagram. But I was wondering if I can get a visual on the height of the current height of the current tower1 to its predecessor the former twins. So this way the current height of Tower 1 can compare to the height of the completed Twin Towers, so I can figure out visually comparing the two The Old VS The New on height in visual.

I'm not all about height for height's sake but I would have loved to have seen them build twin versions of the new WTC 2.

Indeed, that's why my photos are not just of the building but trying to give it scale as well. It is all ready massive, no pan am building but not to far off either.

Ok try this again, On google earth earlier looking at the new wtc and looking from that iconic spot where most photographer's take them great pic's of nyc from under brooklyn bridge and 2WTC GETS IN THE WAY Of 1WTC ! ! !
So u can't even see the freedom tower from that once always great shot of the skyline with the twins towers in.

I hope the construction workers will wear some safty device to hold them up while constructing the spire on top of the New Tower 1 cause one wrong move or a few seconds of being dizzy would spell deep trouble.

I don't know about the rest of you but I'm sick of all of the yapping about the necessity of having twin buildings just because the buildings we tragically lost happened to be twin buildings. The new designs are beautiful in my opinion and the contrast between them are modern and interesting architecturally. It's too late to redesign everything, this is what we're building, and it's going to be something that New Yorkers as well as the rest of us can be proud of.

The decision not to build twin towers is based on the idea that a complex resembling the former WTC would be too haunting a daily image for the victims' families. Let it go, people.

The new FT design would look stupid as a twin tower setup. The old WTC twins worked because they were simple bland grey boxes.

A single new FT design carries more visual weight than a single old WTC design.

One World Trade Center to Receive Building Materials (http://www.azom.com/news.asp?newsID=28127)
A new landmark is currently being built in New York: the One World Trade Center. The corners of the skyscraper’s facade will be edged with stainless steel made in Germany.

ThyssenKrupp Nirosta (Krefeld) produced the material at its Dillenburg plant using a customized rolling and heat-treatment process. Partner company Christian Pohl GmbH (Cologne) fabricated this high-quality material into complex facade elements for the corners of the One World Trade Center – some 250 tons in total. After the shipment to the USA, the installation work of these elements has just started.

One World Trade Center is owned by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey and its construction is being managed by Tishman Construction Corporation of New York. Work on the project began in 2006. The building will have 2.6 million square feet of rentable space, the gross square footage is 3.5 million square feet. The high-rise itself will be 417 meters tall, topped with a 124-meter antenna. The total height of 541 meters corresponds exactly to 1,776 feet, a reference to the American Declaration of Independence in 1776. Adjacent to the tower will be a museum and memorial to the victims of September 11, 2001.

The final architectural design of the building now under construction was drawn up in the New York office of the international architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merill. The outer facade of the skyscraper will be made of glass. Above the 60-meter-high base, the metal frames surrounding the glass panes will be clad with stainless steel panels. The outstanding architectural feature of the design is that the edges of the building rotate through an angle of 45 degrees from the base upwards. All the corner elements therefore have to be made in a tapering form in line with this axial rotation.

These 1 by 4 meter (40 by 160 inches) facade elements are being made from the corrosion-resistant chromium-nickel-molybdenum stainless steel alloy Nirosta 4404 with a textured finish “Laser” specially designed for this project. “Our material meets the extremely high requirements for uniform surface quality with no streaking or shadowing from any angle regardless of light conditions,” says Gert Weiß, head of product service at ThyssenKrupp Nirosta. And Heinrich Robert Pohl, managing director of Christian Pohl GmbH, adds: “Such complex jobs call for supreme technical competencies and a wealth of manufacturing experience. With a high-tech solution we were able to win our extremely demanding customers over to this jointly developed, high-quality German product.”

For the US companies involved in the One World Trade Center, the fact that owner, architects and client chose material made in Germany was not without significance. “The quality of our product helped us to win the contract for this out-of-the-ordinary project. Ultimately we regard it as an accolade to be a part of this globally known project in the heart of New York which means so much to so many Americans,” emphasize ThyssenKrupp Nirosta and Christian Pohl GmbH, both of whom are based in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany).

Lets move Forward. The two freedom towers are silly and ain't happening. However I have a proposal.
Quite franky the sheer size of the building is awesome, Buts thats NOT ENOUGH for me New York or America, and the drawings with the antenae (Spire) look AWFULL....the rendering or drawings of the final product make this skyscraper look boring.

Go read about skyscraper construction. You can't decide to increase a building's height by 750 ft. when it's already halfway up. Everything that's been constructed so far has been designed and engineered to 1776 feet. You can't just "engineer the glass and reshape the building" for fucks sake.

The glass is very dirty right now from the all the snow storms. Compare the most recent glass to not so recent glass and you will see. IMO the glass is fantastic.

If we count only Lower Manhattan, I would say 1 WTC will dominate the skyline when it reaches the 62th floor, but if we count all New York, it will dominate until it surpass the Empire State, that will not happen until this baby has a spire.

7 took four years to build. Might have taking longer if it was taller. Tower 7 is everything tower 1 will be.

Well the picture you commented on that was posted by( Jwalas) is a picture from a week plus ago, and second when we say 3 floors or what ever the number left to a mile stone mark for the tower, we mean the next floor or floors after the one that they are constructing now, ( for Example).

As for your second question compareing towers 1 and 7 in construction speed, I think (Kingsc) answered it quite well.:)

I am estimating that it will taken another 5 or 6 crane jumps for the roof to form a near-perfect octogon. What do you guys think? And for those of you that don't lke the cladding: considering the building subsists in a city whose number of adjacent buildings approach most countries' total number of buildings, I'm willing to sacrifice a little reflection.

But I think this project isn't simple at all as well, the total height of 1, 2, 3, and 4WTC together is 1628,1 metres (5341,54 feet), approximately a mile! And then I don't even add 7WTC and the possible 5WTC. Together with the memorial, the transportiation hub and the memorial this will be mindblowing! :D

I've noticed that very same thing but it seems to me that it will clearly have smaller floors higher up because every single floor has a little more cut off of the corners as it grows taller until the point that those long triangular shaped cutaways will finally form a square at the very top of the roof. So I'm thinking that it would depend on the angle you're taking the photo from as far as the tapering is concerned. If you were taking a photo in the direction of any of the four corners I think it would looked tapered because you would see the sloping cutaways on every floor that gets smaller towards the top. However, if you were facing the exact center of the building with your camera from any of the four sides it would not appear to taper because all four of the those walls are perfectly verticle.

Being founded by the Dutch has nothing to do with anything - Dutch is not commonly spoken in NY. Spanish is, second only to english.

Regarding the building appearing not to taper that much I have noticed that for some time too. But it is clear that is an illusion given by the netting. The netting often bulges out from the building where the taper is thereby hiding it. Eliminate the netting and it would be very clear. If you look close you can notice that in many of the pictures.

Being founded by the Dutch has nothing to do with anything - Dutch is not commonly spoken in NY. Spanish is, second only to english.

Regarding the building appearing not to taper that much I have noticed that for some time too. But it is clear that is an illusion given by the netting. The netting often bulges out from the building where the taper is thereby hiding it. Eliminate the netting and it would be very clear. If you look close you can notice that in many of the pictures.

And note that the building is just at like two fifth if you leave out the base, so I think we'll just have to wait.

That's because of the angle at which this view is from. If you look at my explanation a few posts above I'm positive I've answered the question correctly. Look at it from any corner and it will appear tapered at the maximum angle. Look at it from the exact center of any of the four sides and it will not appear to taper at all.

To me when I go to the site the taper is quite noticable behind the netting. In a two dimensional diagram here it may not seem like a lot but when you see it in person it is quite noticable, just as the bulge out from the ground level to the top of the 200 foot base is also noticable.

Floor 1 was the Concoruse, Floor 2 was the plaza, floors 3-6 was the the storage area, floor 7 was the Lower mechanical floor, Floor 8 was the Upper Mechanical area and floor 9 is unkown. The total height of its base was 108 feet tall.

New Tower1 base- Consists of (20) floors /6 levels.
The lobby is about 70 feet tall, then you have 6 levels of Mechanical and storage floors areas.Total height of the Base is 187.6 feet tall.

Don't discount the influence of the Dutch on the entire NY/NJ area. Hoboken, Bleecker, Weehawen, Stuyvesant, and Bowery are all Dutch names.

Yes I understand your point, but most photo's are not taken from exactly one corner, so at most photo's it doesn't appear to taper much. But I agree with you!

Forgive me everyone, But is it me of there has not been any work being done on the 57th and 58th floors since the cocoon netting was placed a week ago, I mean there hasnt been snowing, no thunderstorms with lightning fear, no winds above 30 mph in the last week in manhattan. so I am asking this in a GOOD and Respectful way, why hasnt been any significant work being dont on those 2 floors? Thank You.

A line of rain/thunderstorms came near on Monday, with wind. Rain and wind last Thursday and Friday, and Monday a week ago there was snow on the ground, but not a lot.

Anything can cause a temporary slow down, a missed truck, a supplier behind on steel sequencing, a request from the guys on the lower levels to "let us catch up!" just kidding

That areal photo is beautiful (thanks for posting, Dino); meanwhile, quoting pictures is somehow disturbing to some people (I'm not considered one of them), also the thread gets bigger, but of reposted images.
Although pictures are for some people amazing and for others just pictures, there's no need to get double image in the same page.

A lot of 1000ft+ towers are proposed or under construction in midtown. At the moment there's really no reason to complain. Also 1500 seems a little bit to tall for me. 1200 should be enough.

Reality and money dictate what gets built and where. This is the simple truth.

If a 2,900 foot tall tower is deemed profitable in midtown, it will be built. (Don't hold your breath.) (Don't bore me with FAA rules etc.either, money talks. If "The Donald" wanted it built, it would be built.)
