Bruce.Tenmile March 3rd, 2011, 05:05 PM A larger and more modern designed replica of ESB. Just food for thought...:2cents: Something with that sort of setback silhouette would be all I'd want. By the way it's nice you always post these updates from your apartment, but you don't have to add comments everytime like "I have such a great view haha, no one else does, losers" or something like that. 600West218 March 4th, 2011, 06:37 PM Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village are hardly luxurious. More like middle class. They have more in common with Co-op City in the Bronx or Starret City in Brooklyn than luxury co-ops on the upper east side. In fact, I think they were broke and no one wanted them not that long ago - wasn't a big insurance company trying to get rid of them? Further, they are built of the same ugly brown brick and with the same design as almost all public housing projects are built. Therefore, it is quite understandable that they would be confused with public housing - ie a ghetto. hellrazor650 March 4th, 2011, 06:38 PM I love how people think New York is one big ghetto dsb5309 March 4th, 2011, 06:56 PM The steel just rose another 2 floors! Zensteeldude March 4th, 2011, 08:49 PM ^^ There are exceptions like the corner nodes. If you look closely you can see that the node is about 3 floors high, not the usual two floors of the rest of the columns. lukeit March 4th, 2011, 08:54 PM possible.. dsb5309 March 4th, 2011, 09:03 PM Does this make it taller than 7WTC? The Security Center construction will expand into the vacant lot soon. Are we ever going to see a building in NY that isn't just another boring rectangular box? This looks like a vertical coffin! {Place standard insult about how short the Shard, the soon to be tallest building in Europe is compared to Tower One. here} But seriously, as an adult, such comments boar me. It's amazing how Dubai, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taipei must have "Greatest Skyline In The World", because some building is over 1500 feet. It's nice that these cities didn't have to invest in over 100 years of building skyscrapers between 100 and 1250 feet tall. If you want to do a battle of skyscrapers: stand at Rockefeller Center and look down 6th Avenue, left and right, then stand at some important intersection in Taipei or stand along Connaught Road or some 12 lane highway in Dubai named after a hotel chain. Tell me what you see. NYC may not have the tallest building in the world anymore, it hasn't since the early 70's, but it does have the densest selection of skyscrapers bar none. Yeah Shanghai has more buildings 12 stories or higher, yay!!!! go British Imperialists. I really don't even know how this is even a discussion on these forums, save for Chicago and what they have given and still give to the architecture of "skyscrapers". parsonsnose March 6th, 2011, 01:19 PM "stand at Rockefeller Center and look down 6th Avenue, left and right" Just looked that up on google earth street view...amazing. TheTrueLord March 6th, 2011, 01:57 PM In my opinion the appearance of a skyline has nothing to do with a single building which might be 1500 feet high... it does not matter - that is the reason why i dont like the skyline of taipei - however i like the taipei 101! if i would compare skylines all over the world i would never say that dubai or shanghai has the best one because it does not look well. for me it is clear that new york, hong kong and chicago have the best skylines. even if they do not have as high buildings as dubai! It could just stay to the side of that surface and still have a vertical drop for part of the boom's range. If I'm doing the math right, at the top, going straight out from the middle of the surface, it would have to reach out 70 feet to hit the ground, but there's no reason for that. No telling how anyone could think the top of a non stepped tower could be smaller than the bottom without a sloping side. Traynor March 8th, 2011, 12:17 AM English is s second language for many forumers (and many others are just functioning illiterates) so they should not be ridiculed for not understanding the nuances of English, such as Taper, Slant and Slope. The crane on the corner is on a side that slants away from vertical but that side actually gets wider as it rises not narrower. Therefore it does not taper to a point, but widens to a wedge shape. Therefore the crane can sit on that side all the way to the top, if they wish. Otie March 8th, 2011, 12:54 AM taxref (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36285585@N06/) (March 5th, 2011) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5131/5502587859_6c9167a007_b.jpg jag9889 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jag9889/) (March 5th, 2011) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5254/5506219339_38dd6533c1_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5176/5506882100_b244bb1108_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5171/5506285671_213ecd1eaf_b.jpg machu pichu (http://www.flickr.com/photos/machu_picchu/)(March 5th, 2011) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5133/5504491046_ef64892762_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5097/5503916791_4907eb2a6f_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5052/5504497956_dc7a31f957_b.jpg jwilly (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jwillys/) (March 5th, 2011) Photo of the day: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5017/5505361604_1894d4f24a_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5020/5504763319_4861c7ef1a_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5098/5505341830_8a2fe0b25a_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5056/5504744055_cc31ac391b_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5217/5504740539_6edd1c5cb9_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5098/5504736703_cb146df45b_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5059/5504733605_007a740533_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5175/5505322442_e73fa72466_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5096/5504723819_5d360243a9_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5055/5505308926_d365591bf6_b.jpg Pete.Mac (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mrmullaney/) (March 5th, 2011) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5177/5499724544_c3d05500be_b.jpg http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5016/5499725566_bd1a0c83e7_b.jpg lav_ish (http://www.flickr.com/photos/25315697@N02/) (March 4th, 2011) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5256/5506818321_5202e627ce_b.jpg r0xyyyy (http://www.flickr.com/photos/39914158@N05/) (March 4th, 2011) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5092/5505914355_b4b401e256_b.jpg Maksim Ovsyannikov (http://www.flickr.com/photos/getmaksimized/) (March 6th, 2011) http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5017/5503332305_e95a893401_o.jpg Oops... The planned eatery -- which had been part of the building's plan since it was first called the Freedom Tower -- was shelved due to concerns about cost and the difficulty of finding a restaurateur willing to run a likely money-losing operation. Port Authority executive director Chris Ward said, "These things are always money-losers. We think we can achieve a far better financial return given the [quality of the] space and avoid all the complexiities. "New York City already has plenty of great restaurants," Ward said. The tower is being built by the PA and private developer Douglas Durst. An original plan for a two-story restaurant, first announced in 2007, was later scaled down to one floor -- but even that proved probihitively costly. The decision to drop the restaurant came abruptly. The PA Web site still includes a "skyline" restaurant among the tower's amenities. The PA Web site still includes a "skyline" restaurant among the tower's amenities. a restaurateur willing to run a likely money-losing operation What a load of crap talk there. Wasnt the former Windows on the World restaurant the highest grossing restaurant in the country in its last full year of business? Bloody Shame tbh. But when you think about it, where would all the kitchen equipment (stove tops, ovens, fridge units) and tables and chairs go? wont the core of the building take most of the floor space up on those higher levels? considering the area size of this proposed restaurant is nearly half the floor area space of the former Window on the World restaurant. There would be a significant reduction of the amount of space. Maybe its not feasible to have a restaurant in that small configure of space possibly. All these questions. Maybe Zen could provide the floor diagrams for floor that the proposed resteraunt will be on. Floor 101 i think it is. Probably a bunch of factors to why the idea has been scrapped but I'm sure losing profit is not one of them. "Highest Grossing" just means how much business the restaurant did. It doesn't tell you how much it cost to run. The old WOTW could have made a billion dollars a year in business but if it cost them a billion and one dollars in overhead costs then it wasn't a money maker. Until you see the actual accounting books for the old WOTW restaurant, you will never know how razor thin their profit margins may have been. Considering food and utility costs these days, higher wages, ridiculous per square foot rental prices and the astronomical amount of insurance costs for a restaurant in the new number one target... I mean 1WTC... You can see how a restaurateur may be reluctant to take that on. jhalsey March 9th, 2011, 05:48 PM THAT GLASS IS JUST SOOOO REFLECTIVE. The core tapers as the building rises, since the core will be carrying a much smaller load at the upper floors. By reducing the core size, you get more square footage. MattToronto March 10th, 2011, 10:56 PM ^^ Also the kitchen and various services would be housed in the core anyways. KenfromJersey March 10th, 2011, 11:30 PM I think high-floor restaurants aren't going to be on the menu (sorry) for supertalls, at least not in this country. Restaurants need their own passenger elevator, plus they have to bring up large supplies of food and send down large quantities of waste of all kinds, which necessitates their own freight elevator as well. When you consider what you can rent out an office with that kind of view, without the increased maintenance and fire insurance costs it doesn't make sense. We've got a bunch of tall buildings here in Jersey City, almost all of them less than 20 years old. None of them have high floor restaurants despite having a great view of the Manhattan skyline. Even the W Hotel in Hoboken doesn't have one. dfiler March 11th, 2011, 12:30 AM I unfortunately agree. Pittsburgh lost its restaurant at the top of the US Steel tower for that exact reason. King of Construction March 11th, 2011, 01:48 AM I ate at the View restaurant in the Marriot Hotel last week, but the whole view was blocked by other buildings, but man expensive it was. I have never been to the Windows of the World but really ashame they don't restart a restaurant. Of course it's expensive but they can charge triple if not more to there costumers than other restaurants. MattToronto March 11th, 2011, 02:22 AM The CN Tower has a cafe and restaurant, but it also only has 5 public floors. It's also not an office tower with rentable space, as stated before. There are floors that actually don't exist (for example the ones in the base 1-19). And I think they are some symbolic floors, like the ones in the Communication Ring (108-109-110). Anyways, the exact number of structural-floors can be given by Zen. As for your second question, the parapet will mark the same height as the original twins (1361' and1368') (415m-417) mindgoessnap March 11th, 2011, 11:08 PM Anybody know if the earthcam portal is still offering high def images? I never actually counted the number of times the core changes shape but I think it's more than 20 times. I don't see this slowing things down but speeding things up. It gets smaller, less rebar to set and less concrete. PS: it gets considerably smaller at the 20th floor and is not the giant we all saw before being hidden from view. There have been several reductions since. can anyone give me a definitive answer on how many floors this building is going to have? The actual building height not the spire will be the exact same height as the twin towers wont it? regardless of how many floors right ? I actually sat down and counted the number of actual floors and came up with 94. On the drawings there is actually a level inside the spire labeled floor 110, I'm sure it's purely symbolic. The pic of the prints piled up on "the poor red chair" was taken almost 3 years ago when I was reviewing the revised drawings for any changes that might affect my bid. Those are the "half scale" set and are actually a little over half of the total number of drawings for the tower. The full scale set was printed on 60 by 36 paper. Zensteeldude March 13th, 2011, 10:56 PM I love that Chinese glass. Very nice. I think you are confused. The glass for the curtain wall is made in the USA. The so called Chinese glass is in the base of the tower. This distinction is rather silly to me. There is steel from Luxembourg, owned by an Indian company Incorporated into this tower, do we call it Indian steel or Luxembourger steel . The Halfen channels are from Germany . . . . . etc etc this is silly. As long as the product meets or exceeds the specifications I really do not care where it was made, this Tower is BUILT IN THE USA.
