I have to agree that the above photo clearly reveals how the building has emerged to begin dominating the skyline. I hadn't realized how tall it actually was until I saw this shot. The whole project is progressing very nicely.

That is a great shot.

I think when WTC1 is competed the towers in front will look fat and bulky, because they seem to have a bigger footprint. :)

Actually RobertWalpole, the area where 5 wtc was intended to be built will apparently be the area where people will buy tickets for the 9/11 memorial. Or so I have heard. There are also rumors that NYU will buy the 5 wtc site in order to expand there campus

China Center to Build the Modern Vision for a New China in One World Trade Center (http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/china-center-to-build-the-modern-vision-for-a-new-china-in-one-world-trade-center-119870099.html)

NEW YORK, April 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- China Center New York unveiled its high-profile interior concept design, "Folding Garden" for its future home at One World Trade Center. Once in place, the vertical Chinese garden folding through 64th to 69th floors provides an extraordinary space for Chinese and U.S. business leaders to build relationships and provides a dramatic showcase for the rise of modern China.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110414/NY83697 )
Today's unveiling is the first step in bringing the abstract concept of a Chinese folding garden into reality in a uniquely urban environment. "We plan to create an architectural masterpiece of world-class standard where the traditional Chinese culture is fully represented and explored," said Xue Ya, President of China Center. "Its goal is to become an important window presenting a contemporary Chinese image while offering a platform for international business exchange."
Behind the concept is the vision of China Center Chairman Feng Lun – to build a world-class business environment with an unprecedented design. A team of internationally renowned artists and designers have worked on the project for the last two years and are all very excited about moving the project forward.
"While Chinatowns in all metropolises represent the past version of Chinese culture in the West, we want to create a new iconic environment at One World Trade Center to represent an open-minded and confident China that embraces all values," said Feng Lun, a well-known real estate developer in China. "We want people to come here, look at the space, and say 'Wow! This is a side of China I haven't seen,'" he said.
Support for China Center's bold, folding garden design and modern China showcase was shared by over 70 Chinese business leaders who recently had a sneak peek preview of the concept design.
The concept design is based on a "Folding Garden" concept originally proposed by Zhou Wei, a renowned Chinese artist. China Center Art Director Weng Ling hand-picked the top-ranking Japanese architect Kengo Kuma & Associates to bring the concept to fruition. New York-based architect firm Perkins Eastman will work with Kengo Kuma to implement the design into the space in One World Trade Center.
In order to create a truly distinctive experience, the "Folding Garden" idea was reinterpreted by connecting the floors and functions vertically. This is still not a common approach in skyscrapers, not just in New York but also around the world.
"By combining the unique, meandering spatial characteristics of the Chinese garden with several floors of the iconic One World Trade Center, we can arrive at a very special kind of design that is specific to China Center and to New York City, all at once," said Kuma. "This is a very special opportunity that bridges modern and traditional motifs, architecture and nature, and most importantly the Chinese and American cultures."
"The China Center Space will boldly combine culture and business," said Weng Ling, the art director. "It is both aesthetic and functional."
As a leader in green development, Mr. Feng Lun has pledged to build China Center as a LEED platinum space, the highest standard for green interior design as established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
China Center New York LLC is the unequivocal platform for China-U.S. business and cultural exchange. In 2009, it became the first corporate tenant for the iconic redeveloped One World Trade Center tower and set to move in 1 WTC in 2014.

Question about the base of the tower :

A few months ago, when they installed those huge columns at the base (I forgot about the details, but the one that needed the 18000 and 16000 to be lifted), I thought they had such big columns to have some kind of an "open space" at the base of the tower.

But now, they poured those huge blast wall pretty much everywhere around the base, and I have to wonder, why did they go with "just" a few columns when they could have use more column and/or transversal/inclined beam to dish out the weight? Because all that concrete isn't use to "support" the tower, but they could have fit a lot of steel inside that concrete that could have been use to that effect. I suppose having so few columns is a pretty expensive choice, and I don't see the use of it if they just fill the empty space with concrete.

So, since the people that design this beauty are obviously smarter than me, what am I missing here?

Davidsam52
April 30th, 2011, 11:09 PM
I think it stands to reason that those concrete panels between the columns are fortified probably with an exraordinary amount of rebar, plus the concrete used itself is probably a specially formulated extra strong mix. Have you noticed how long the formwork is left on, especially the corners? Months at a time!

I'm Brazilian state of Piaui, I love spider heaven and follow the daily progress of the construction of One World Trade Center.

It's a shame that the big metrolpoles of Brazil does not have buildings over 50 floors.

At this moment there are thousands of buildings under construction in Sao Paulo, but all with up to 40 floors.

In Rio de Janeiro does not really exist, because the tall buildings would disturb the view of mountains and sea, which are unique in the world.

I love New York.

I like how the progress on the 1WTC is going and hopefuly 4WTC will make its way into the downtown skyline soon. However, as much as I like the design of the 2WTC (Lord Foster's tower), I have to admit that it will completely obscure any decent view of 1WTC from Brooklyn (especially from the Brooklyn Bridge), and the only good view of 1 WTC will be from the south, north and west. When the original Twin Towers were built, they were purposefully not unaligned with each other to avoid this issue. 2 WTC is almost equal in height to 1 WTC (a mere 18 foot difference, excluding 1WTC's spire) and will therefore block any view of 1WTC from an eastern vantage point. This is more than likely the reason why there are no official renders of 1WTC from the Brooklyn vantage point. If you don't believe me, go to the PANYNJ website and navigate to their Google Earth link. There you can bring up a render of the future WTC site from the eastern side and check this out. As it stands, I think it would be fine to leave 2 WTC as the retail stump its planned to be anyways, though I have no problem with Richard Roger's 3 WTC going up. Even though 3 WTC, has an admittedly inferior design to 2WTC, the tower is only 1,155 feet high.

Was one of the original twins invisible? Obviously, there was an angle from which one blocked the other. Better call PANYNJ just to make sure they don't finish 2 WTC so your view isn't blocked. Good to know you have no problem with WTC 3 being finished.

Yes, I was actually pointing at the width indeed ... you are right, due to its tapering design, the base looks or is wider than the old WTC towers, but even now, as it gets smaller towards the top, still looks massive to me.

Thanks for the information. :)

dfiler
May 3rd, 2011, 12:43 PM
The base is a few feet smaller and the roof is half the size of one of the old towers.

There was some amazing footage of the WTC site on the news last night. Did anyone happen to get screen captures? In particular there were a couple shots of the top of the tower when seen from above.

i think the whole complex may be larger cause this one has 541-411-and almost all are 300+ whereas in the older only 2 were 300+:)

Yes, because there will be so many 300+ towers in this relatively tiny 16-acre site, the view of 1 WTC will be completely obscured from many angles, most of all Brooklyn.

I asked this question before, and no one seems to know the answer:

At floor or height will the outline of this tower be a perfect octagon? It seems to me we are near or at that junction now.

Otie
May 4th, 2011, 04:03 AM
^ I'm sure at least the half of the people here know the answer, it's just that this Bin Laden topic appears to be more important than the tower itself.

The perfect octagon is located on 72nd floor 880' where all 8 sides are 89 feet wide. Only 8 floors more!

I'm pretty sure the lighting in it right now is for construction purposes only. Once the building is operational, the flood lights will come down and regular lighting will be used. It will still be very bright because of the facade, but not like it is now.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Zen's tragic loss. He and I butted heads on many occasions on these sites, but in private messages had become good friends.

Although no one has officially died so far in the construction of these towers, I will never be able to think of them that way again. We have lost a friend, a teacher, a mentor and a buddy.

You were so proud of these towers. Their design, their construction and most importantly you were so proud of all the people involved in their construction. No one wanted to see these towers finished more than you and I hope someone in New York will lay some flowers at the memorial in your name when they are done.

My thoughts are with your family and I wish they find the solace they deserve in this tragic time.

God bless you Chris, I will miss you.

You'd be suprised. Alot more "usable" floorspace in lower buildings, as less goes to the core, staircases, etc. Those lowrise buildings covered most of the WTC site, whereas now you have tons of greenspace.

While I thoroughly enjoy seeing different milestones reached on this amazing project, I don't really look forward to its ultimate completion because I'm so enjoy witnessing the process and I particularly enjoy/appreciate the way everyone here shares information and their passions/interests (photography, engineering, architecture, etc.).

However, I am looking forward to the opportunity to meet many of you in person once the project is complete. I hope we'll do that. Definitely something to look forward to.

With that said/typed, I have to admit that I was looking forward to meeting Zen the most and being able to shake his hand. He and his family and especially the beautiful wife he was so very proud of are very much in my thoughts.

Peace

Glass problems force design change at Freedom Tower podium

By Katy Devlin, Glass Magazine
May 4, 2011

Glass Magazine has confirmed with two reliable off-the-record sources that New York City's Freedom Tower podium is going through a major redesign due to glass fabrication problems. Sanxin Façade, China, was contracted to fabricate the podium's thick specialty lites. According to sources, the glass couldn't be fabricated as planned, requiring architects at Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP, New York, to "scrap" the initial design, in the words of one source, and develop a new podium design.

Zetian Systems, Las Vegas, was contracted by Solera Construction/DCM Erectors, New York City, to perform the design-assist services, fabrication and delivery of the podium systems. Zetian subcontracted the fabrication to Sanxin Facade.

The podium was designed to be a signature element of the tower, located at Ground Zero, featuring a 185-foot wall of more than 2,000 pieces of prismatic glass and welded aluminum screens, according to a November 2010 release from PPG Industries, Pittsburgh, which manufactured the 1-inch Starphire ultra-clear glass for the Freedom Tower podium. "We have already shipped the glass [but] aren't part of the fabrication or design activities," said Rob Struble, business communications manager, growth initiatives and performance glazing, PPG Industries, in an email.

Also known as One World Trade Center, the Freedom Tower is set to reach 102 stories, 1,776 feet, making it the tallest building in the United States, according to the PPG release.

Representatives from the Port Authority, SOM, Sanxin Façade, Solera/DCM and Zetian have not yet responded to requests for comment. GlassMagazine.com will post updates as soon as they are available.

What do they call "podium" ? Is it the socle of the tower (the first 20th floors) ? Or the big ring located on the roof that will serve as platform of the spire ?

First 20 floors of building..The part which is not cladded yet..The rings on the roof are communication rings...There's 3 of them...They won't be cladded...

So, if I read that correctly, the glass was shipped from PPG to Sanxin Façade and whatever process they were going to do to it, didn't work. Is all the glass scrap now?

Looks like the Dutch flag  But it sure looks cool, just like those colored lights during Christmas!

I hope the podium won't appear much different, I liked the old one. Is it an issue with the manufacturer itself or is it just physically impossible? If it's an issue with the manufacturer, can't they just conract another manufacturer?

I ll say, September 2011! To mark a new era!

Much Before, Its 781 feet tall right now, So each floor is 13 feet 4 inches, so times that by two would be 26 feet 8 inches. So current height 781 feet plus 26.8 inches tall would make it 805 feet. So the next move up it will conqure the 800 foot mark with only 563 feet to go to the roof height.

So my opinion is once it passes 800 feet, it will surely start to take its true form and we will start to see the real thing look like its renders.

They are on the 64th floor right now, exactly 773 feet 4 inches. The base is 186' 8" tall (20th floor). Add 13' 4" for every floor above that. 66th floor will take it to 800' exactly.

* I guess your adding additional height for the column splice...

I have received a message from Linda regarding anyone interested in donations in Zensteeldude 's (Chris) name:

Mitchell

Thank you for all your help.

Nicol is in _______ (please do not mention the state) scattering Chris's ashes on the farm where he was born.

I have read the last few pages of the forum and am brought to tears again.

For those who can afford it, I'm sure that Chris would want Liberty Bonds to be bought in order to support the Silverstein Towers. I know that Chris and Nicol have bought many.

We would be honored if those compelled to make a donation in his name would donate to the American Red Cross, The 9/11 Memorial Foundation or to their local PBS station.

Ask them to donate in Zensteeldude's honor. I do not wish to give out his full name.

Thank you once again,

Glass problems force design change at Freedom Tower podium
By Katy Devlin, Glass Magazine
May 4, 2011
COMMERCIAL, FABRICATION : PROJECTS

I find the term "Major redesign" to be a bit hyperbolic. I hardly think the podium will now be a Frank Gehry inspired wrinkled tin can, or a billowing glass bubble of curving atrium glass... The structure is already built. It only needs cladding, not redesigning.

It is still going to be the same shape with some sort of glass-based cladding over top. At best, this is a re-thinking or re-imagining of the podium.

We here on these forums are prone to wild speculation and rumours as it is, let's not let a poor choice of words and bad writing from a glass fabricator's magazine get us in a tizzy. Look at who the source is.

Hello,

I'm new here, but I've been lurking around this thread for about 7 months. I have a question regarding 1 WTC (eek!).

Now, before I ask, please allow me to state that I have seen many renders of this building, and STR's are amazing. But I liked this one, too:

http://www.kob-one.com/th_kobdef/medias/big/20101221misc_T3FEiNC9Rhzen.jpg

My question is this: Is the building supposed to look like an obelisk or something? I REALLY hope not. It would be so disappointing having such a building replace the old North Tower.

Anyway, that is the reason I love the building so much. It looks like the old North Tower, to me.

Please reply. I apologize if this seems a little silly...
