Bruce.Tenmile June 24th, 2011, 09:27 PM why would anyone want stumps? not only would it be a poor choice in aesthetics, but it would also hinder the continued economic development of new york,
I'll tell you why. A stump for the time being for 2WTC would mean they might, and it's a slim chance, give it a redesign, a significant one. That's what I'd like. Or just make it 100m shorter.

I hope so, I see what the architect was trying to do the with the sloped roof - give it and identity. Sadly, that hasn't worked. :ohno:

I liked it to begin with. I thought from an aerial view that it was just 4 rectangles with a bit of space between them, and I very much like that sort of right angled symmetry, but when I realised it was all twisted, I went off it.
azn_man12345 June 24th, 2011, 09:39 PM What the hell are you saying "They're not planning on building 2WTC"?
Of course they are. Look at the renders on the site. They show the 4 WTC towers standing together tall and proud.
They ONLY reason 2 and 3 are so far behind 1 and 4 is because of the damn economy. The PA and Silverstein wanted 2 and 3 to be built to ground level and stop until they could get an anchor tenant as opposed to sitting empty for years.
Now with UBS looking at 3, it's very likely 3 won't be stopped at ground level. And by the time 2 gets above grade, there'll probably be a tenant ready to go.
I don't know about the "iconic view" from the Brooklyn Bridge, but as others have said, if it's that big of a deal, can't you move a couple hundred feet in any other direction?
And finally, about this Old WTC vs New WTC business... Yes. We all love the twins. We all miss them. As skyscraper enthusiasts, we all loved the idea of two supertall 110 story buildings right next to each other. But the truth of the matter is, that many people in New York thought that they were gigantic monstrosities that stuck out of the skyline like no other.
Many people found them incredibly ugly. And as sad as it is to say it, it was only after 9/11 that everyone hopped on the "the Twin Towers were amazing" bandwagon.
Personally, I don't think either WTC complex is better or worse. They're two seperate entities. But in safety aspects, the New WTC is MILES ahead of the old WTC, and will very likely be the safest skyscrapers in the world when complete.

 Very well said, I agree that the 'WTC Towers were beautiful' opinion is one started when they collapsed. If you took a time machine back to 1992 and asked a New Yorker what he/she thought of the Twin Towers, the response would be lukewarm at best. The new WTC is getting the same reception here in Manhattan, but when it's complete, the sounds of people screaming for new Twin Towers will be replaced by the sounds of water flowing from the reflecting pools.
Felipe_BG June 24th, 2011, 10:28 PM I agree, they were my favorite buildings and still are, and my love of the former twins would pass over fine to the new WTC but that god-awful Diamond tower known as 2WTC is making sure that won't happen. In a perfect world, 2 and 3 would be stumps, hell, in a perfect world we'd still have the twins, much to the dismay of some users on here.
I'm new here, so I have to say a few words about The Twins, too. I miss them, too. I liked it very much, although they were "just boxes". But, exactly beacuse of that, The Twins were actually unique. What a monumental boxes they were. :) I feel sorry that I will never see that historic sight, when approaching New York, 'cause I have still not been there.
Anyway, I can not wait to see the new WTC built.
patrick989 June 24th, 2011, 10:30 PM Who cares if the view gets block. The building's still going to be there. If you want to see 1 WTC outside of manhattan, move to Jersey City believe me we won't miss you.
Well that's an arrogant and offensive response. A lot of people care and it doesn't give you the right to tell us to move. Don't be an asshole.
why would anyone want stumps? not only would it be a poor choice in aesthetics, but it would also hinder the continued economic development of new york,
lol, as if that "economic development" is directly benefiting you? Anyone who argues for 2 WTC to be built because they're concerned about the city's "economic development" is either a conservative or just loony. You think everyone's lives in the city are going to magically improve when the rest of these towers are completed? I don't think money's going to fall from the sky for anyone, it'll just keep filling the pockets of the filthy rich.
Optimum1368 June 24th, 2011, 10:31 PM The new WTC will be a new start. A recovery from a decade that was most famous for the attack. It will rise up, along with our freedom and integrity, once again, to the top of the world.

I agree. :)
And about the fact that so many people "reconsidered" their love to The Twins, well, yeah, I just can say that it happened so often in the history of mankind with artists, too. Only after they passed away, they were "rediscovered". :)
kenersej June 24th, 2011, 11:23 PM ENOUGH with all the f*cking bullsh*t!!!
Can't we just make an agreement NOT to discuss off-topic stuff, like the construction of the WTC 2. You guys can do that shit elsewhere...
This thread is supposed to be about the construction of WTC1, nothing more, nothing less.
WTC1 thread = WTC1 ONLY
sweet-d June 24th, 2011, 11:35 PM You two are stupid.
Yes, let's cancel a beautiful 1,350ft tall building, that would not only add beauty to New York's skyline but will also be of economic benefit to the city and downtown once its leased, all because it will "block" 1WTC from Brooklyn.
As if anyone cares...

Anybody else think the towers looks much bigger and stronger in this render? Don't know what the changes by this image and the final design is without the spire, but i like this better overall.
MattToronto June 25th, 2011, 01:46 AM Same design. The rest of the complex is changed in it though.
IanG June 25th, 2011, 05:05 AM The new WTC will be a new start. A recovery from a decade that was most famous for the attack. It will rise up, along with our freedom and integrity, once again, to the top of the world.
*Cough* Uh...yeah. I agree with the new start, not so much with your other statements.
Same design. The rest of the complex is changed in it though.
In that rendering? No. The design of the platform ring is different, and perhaps the spire. (I apologize if you were alluding to the building itself). ^^;
WTCNewYork June 25th, 2011, 05:09 AM When the building is topped out, will construction on the spire and communications ring begin immediately?
spectre000 June 25th, 2011, 05:24 AM When the building is topped out, will construction on the spire and communications ring begin immediately?
Let's hope so. The PA hasn't said yet. That's a good question to ask on wtcprogress.com's Q&A's.
emmgtv989 June 25th, 2011, 06:01 AM So I am loving the updates.
Also want to congratulate New York for the passage of marriage equality! Now the WTC complex can be a backdrop for the marriage of all couples. :) It has been a good day.

An Artist Who Disappears, Appearing at Ground Zero
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/24/an-artist-who-often-seems-to-disappear-visits-ground-zero/
At 9:40 a.m. Thursday, a man stood across from the World Trade Center site covered in paint. With his whitened face, he looked, thought Koos Koning, a Dutch tourist, as though it were Sept. 11 all over again. “Maybe he came out of the World Trade Center with a white face and ashes.”
Really, the man, Liu Bolin, is a Chinese artist whose latest project – “Hiding in the City” – consists of painting himself and his clothes to resemble his setting so meticulously that he blends into the background. The resulting photographs look as though Mr. Liu has evaporated into British phone booths, Italian ruins and Chinese stadiums. This was his first trip to disappear in New York — for a show that opens at Eli Klein Fine Art in Soho on Wednesday — so his gallerist sent him a list of ideas: Grand Central, the Stock Exchange, a taxi and a bodega. Mr. Liu was insistent.
“I thought about where I wanted, and here is the first place that came to my mind.”
His work is all about disappearance, and it seemed particularly fitting to blend into a space known for a building no longer there — especially Thursday morning, when it was foggy, and the Freedom Tower going up behind him seemed to vanish into the air.
Mr. Liu, who is lanky and chipper, arrived at the intersection of Cedar and Greenwich Streets at 7 a.m. wearing a regulation Chinese military uniform (he likes them for the starchy canvas texture and the tall collars). His entourage included a gallerist who ran out to buy Red Bulls, two young painters and an intern who scrubbed paint drips with Pampers wipes.
It was a hoot for the men of Engine Company No. 10, on their stoop eating cereal, watching the crazy man get dabbed with paint.
First, Mr. Liu’s assistants — trained in realist painting at the same traditional academy he attended — covered his body with tones matching what was behind him. A gallerist took a digital photo of Mr. Liu from the right angle and showed it to him. He nitpicked: the buildings should be better separated.
When Mr. Liu was covered, he looked like a man who had stepped out of a Rothko. His shins were painted in a gray field — the tone of the sidewalk — a blue fence ran across his abdomen, and above that the iron lattices of the Freedom Tower in the fog were presented as a mass of grayish rust among the white of the sky.
With the base layer in place, Mr. Liu marked the placement of his feet and dried off. He teetered back and forth, windmilled his arms, and drank Red Bull through a straw. He doesn’t tire of standing: “There’s something spiritual that keeps me calm. When you think of all the things that happened here.”
It was in 2005, when the Chinese government raided an artists’ village, that Mr. Liu started the project. He said he chooses sites that show that “there is always conflict between the individual and society.” Art critics have seen in his work a commentary on individuals overlooked in cities, or on countries that “disappear” their citizens – as China had jailed dissident artist Ai Wei Wei, released just Wednesday.
Mr. Liu said he knew that to be a Chinese artist making political work was risky; the State could clamp down any time. “You never know when it will happen,” he said, “But you have to prepare for it.”

Finally a decent comment here.
I can not understand, where the hell these people have taken this information and that the WTC2 WTC3 not be built. We're talking about New York, USA. It's just you look at recent photos of the site, you can see that the structures are being built. Another thing, as the friend said that message up, already has his eye on 3WTC tenants, and soon we will have in the building 2.
Before publishing information that these buildings are not built, search before talking shit here.

To stay on topic: I am glad this tower is rising at such a quick pace now.

MarneGator June 25th, 2011, 07:54 PM For me, the most striking thing about the above pictures is not how big it is (albeit that's a nice fact), but rather its proportions: it's so wonderfully slender. The WFC buildings, by contrast, are fairly squat, particularly graceless when juxtaposed with the growing 1 WTC.
*edit* Ok, I'm a chuffing idiot: I was opining about pictures on the previous page!
patrick989 June 25th, 2011, 09:54 PM Does anyone know what the exact height of 1 wtc's obsv. deck will be?
Yes.
IanG June 25th, 2011, 09:59 PM Does anyone know what the exact height of 1 wtc's obsv. deck will be?
The observation deck will be at 1,362 feet (415 m) with a glass parapet extending to 1,368 feet (417 m) - the same heights as the original Twin Towers (South and North Tower respectively).
Yes.
Grr. Could you please give the information if someone asks for it, then?

When it's easily found on Wikipedia, it's not so hard to be a little self-sufficient sometimes and find info like that on your own.

So why bother answering it like that?
Optimum1368, there is a diagram that you may find helpful when differentiating between the "two" heights.

You're welcome, Kanto. ^^

And don't you think that you could have made it a little easier for the guy who asked? "415" is just as easy to write as "yes" :ohno:
MarneGator June 25th, 2011, 10:22 PM ^^ The late Zensteeldude posted that the observation deck will be at 1,266 ft / 385.9 meters. 1,362 ft is the roof height with the parapet going up another 6 feet; the observation deck is indoors so it has to be below that.

The roof height is 1368 iirc. Though I could be wrong.

Haven't you purchased that cloud-penetrating radar camera you said you were getting? At least pick up an Infrared SLR with a 1600mm lens... that's the least you could do for us slobs!
And that poor piece of steel looks so lonely. It is weird that the core scaffolding didn't go up before this piece.

There won't be an observation deck on the roof.
There's some confusion about the roof height sometimes because of the parapet and changing standards on where to measure the height from. The building doesn't sit on level ground.

Well, the old art deco style buildings are tall and skinny. The newer international and post modern style buildings are generally fat bastards as the diagram clearly demonstrates.
Although like Beekman, 1WTC will be an exception.
Kanto June 26th, 2011, 08:08 PM Now that I think about it. 1WTC has already beaten AIB and 40WS in roof height and, with it's cranes, it beats AIB and 40WS in pinnacle height too. So it is now the tallest building in lower Manhattan

According to Silverstein Properties, it is supposed to attract more visitors than the previous complex.

Silverstein: WTC Will Be The New Rockefeller Center
http://www.wtc.com/news/silverstein--wtc-will-be-the-new-rockefeller-center
After years of setbacks, construction at the World Trade Center site is advancing--but the best is yet to come, explained Larry Silverstein, president and CEO of Silverstein Properties, at the Real Estate Lenders Association's (RELA) final breakfast of their membership year at Seven World Trade Center this morning.
"I don't think most people are going to have a clue about what's to come, and when it does, you are going to see a transformation here overnight," Silverstein said. "The impact and transformation will be similar to what Rockefeller Center did in 1930 for Manhattan's West Side."
As the neighborhood comes back, the $20 billion redevelopment of the 16-acre site has also spurred development around it, including the MTA's new Fulton Street Transit Center, the $4 billion revamped PATH terminal, the 190-key Four Seasons Downtown Hotel and new multifamily structures sprouting up in nearby TriBeCa and Battery Park City. "The residential growth of this location is nothing short of phenomenal," Silverstein said, describing Lower Manhattan as an emerging 24/7, live/work community, with more than 60,000 families in the area. "It is the total opposite of what everybody anticipated after 9/11. People have decided to move in, and one of the reasons it is as attractive as it is, is because you have a total coming together of 13 mass transit lines."
But Silverstein also recalled the state of the neighborhood following the 9/11 attack, which sent a shockwave throughout the city and the nation as a whole. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey first made the World Trade Center site and utilities available again in April 2002, but Silverstein explained he was anxious to start rebuilding immediately. "We needed desperately to show some activity down here," Silverstein said. The first designs were drafted in late 2001. "We had to start some kind of rebuilding process. We had to take people who were totally demoralized back into a positive state."
And though initially criticized by Mayor Michael Bloomberg for charging $50 per square foot rents at the 52-story Seven World Trade Center, Silverstein said he wouldn't have it any other way. "I said, Mr. Mayor, this is my money, not public money," he said. "I am doing what I think is right, I am doing that today, and I will believe I will produce a successful result."
Subsequently, Seven World Trade got its first anchor tenant when Moody's Corp. signed a lease for the 11th to 28th floors in the building, which opened in May 2006. As a result, other tenants followed, including Ameriprise Financial, the New York Academy of Science and Mansueto Ventures LLC. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it became the first LEED certified building in New York City.
And momentum is continuing to build. GlobeSt.com asked Silverstein if the signing of Conde Nast's one-million-square-foot lease at One World Trade Center could positively affect leasing at Three World Trade and Four World Trade. He responded that he anticipates lots of interest, though he did not disclose any potential tenants for Towers 3 or 4. Though unconfirmed, UBS AG is considering a move here, sources said.
"I think a corporation of that quality taking a million square feet opened everybody's eyes and they said, ‘Oh my god, what is going on?'" he said. "That had incredible significance. In terms of leasing activity, it has been nothing short of phenomenal."
And...
Population near ground zero doubles since 2000
http://www.wtc.com/news/population-near-ground-zero-doubles-since-2000
After the Sept. 11 attacks, there were grim questions about the future of the shaken, dust-covered neighborhoods around the World Trade Center. Would residents flee uptown or to the suburbs? Would the epic job of rebuilding lower Manhattan be too much to bear? Who would want to live so close to a place associated with such horror?
As it turns out, plenty of folks.
Census figures released last week show that the number of people living near ground zero has swelled by about 23,000 since 2000, making it one of the fastest-growing places in the city.
Virginia Lam, a publicist and former City Hall operative who moved into a newly converted residential building on Wall Street in 2006, said the site is a source of inspiration, rather than fear or gloom.
"It's pretty amazing," she said of the new towers rising from the 16-acre hole created by the attacks. "I feel like, being a New Yorker who was here on 9/11, and who has worked for the Fire Department and for the city, I think it is always in the back of my mind, but it's not something that dominates my thinking. I go about living my life."
About 45,750 people now live in the part of Manhattan south of Chambers Street, which encompasses ground zero. That is more than twice as many as there were during the last census.
There was also significant growth a little farther uptown. In all, 82,137 people were counted as living south of Canal Street, 15 blocks north of the trade center. That is an increase of 43 percent from 2000 in an area that includes the Financial District, Battery Park City, a section of tenement-packed Chinatown and the celebrity-studded streets of TriBeCa, which is short for "Triangle Below Canal."
The change around Wall Street has been especially remarkable given the area's history as a financial hub, rather than a residential district.
One by one, bank headquarters have moved elsewhere, and millions of square feet of office space have been converted to homes - a change spurred partly by government incentives intended to help revive downtown after Sept. 11.
"It's astounding," said Julie Menin, head of the local community board. "Many people thought after 9/11 that people wouldn't remain in Lower Manhattan. Not only did people stay, they came in droves."
New Yorkers have been well aware of the change. In the shell-shocked months after the attacks, the Financial District became a ghost town when workers left for the day. Now it is teeming with people around the clock. Grocery stores have opened. Three new schools have opened up in four years. Briefcase-carrying stockbrokers now share sidewalk space with kids in strollers. A string of new apartment towers has been built along West Street, a short distance from the trade center site.
The area isn't finished growing, either. Near the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, work was recently completed on the tallest apartment tower in the Western Hemisphere, a 76-story, 900-unit skyscraper designed by the architect Frank Gehry.
Growth downtown has far exceeded the rate elsewhere in the city. The 2010 census put the city's population at 8.18 million, up 2.1 percent from 2000. People have been lured to Manhattan's southern tip by a number of things. Battery Park City, the planned community created on landfill at the edge of the Hudson River in the 1980s, is cut off from the car traffic that surges through the rest of Manhattan and is ringed by playgrounds and esplanades with exhilarating views of the harbor.
Before the attacks it was a work in progress, with a large section still unbuilt. Over the past decade, though, it has matured and filled up, finally becoming the community its designers envisioned in the 1970s.
Several of the area's public schools have a solid reputation. The area still isn't on par with other parts of the city when it comes to amenities like street parking or places to buy fresh vegetables, but things have been improving. New Battery Park City resident Theresa Purcell said its isolation - it is one of the few places in the city that really feels as if it is on an island - is one of the things that attracted her. "It is like a hidden little community," she said. "You are in the big, bad city," but still a "little world away."
Across much of the area, there are few remaining signs of the damage done by the terror attacks. Even the tumult of construction at the trade center site barely interrupts the daily flow of residents, office workers and tourists through the neighborhood.
"People should be proud of the fact that we rebuilt this neighborhood," Menin said. New Yorkers could have abandoned their experiment in downtown living after 9/11, but it didn't happen. "I think just the opposite happened. It proved our resilience."
Im Using A Computer June 27th, 2011, 07:37 AM wow this complex is awesome. seems like it is really going to intigrate into the city as a whole more than the previous complex. all that planned retail space seems like it is going to make this a pretty major hangout for tourists and natives in the city.

Bruce.Tenmile June 27th, 2011, 03:41 PM Wow, very impressive! I wish Chicago Spire could be built too.
Well I was never a fan of the Spire so it didn't bother me when it was cancelled, and quite frankly, though it would have been taller than 1WTC, I would feel kinda sorry for Chicago as for me, the design was just so horrible. For me 7 South Dearborn, and the Miglin-Beitler Skyneedle were way way nicer and I'd very much rather have a tower like those.

msl1 June 28th, 2011, 12:34 AM From The Gothamist:
On Friday, we went down to the World Trade Center site to see how construction of 1 World Trade Center and the 9/11 Memorial is progressing. It's striking how much progress there has been since April last year, when we last visited: The plaza and 9/11 museum pavilion seem nearly complete, and 1 WTC is officially a skyscraper, rising more than 70 stories above Ground Zero and visible for miles around.
We asked Chris Ward, the Executive Director of the Port Authority, how so much had gotten done this year. Through a spokesman, he told us "We are building a city within a city. Three years ago, we decided where this project should be on the 10th Anniversary and every year after. Establish clear goals and priorities, then harness the imagination and ingenuity of our builders - that has been the path to progress." Those builders now include more than 3,000 construction workers— the most who have ever been working at the site.

can't be exact, but including the new steel, about 883 feet and 8 inches - taller than Beekman.
spectre000 June 28th, 2011, 12:41 AM Does anyone know the exact height right now?
That one lonely piece of steel at the top brings it to the 72nd floor. 880 feet, plus about 4 more for the splice, so ~884 feet.

spiller9 June 28th, 2011, 06:41 PM what's the list look like if you use roof height?
I'd like to know this too...I can't believe BOA is 2nd tallest in the city, it's right outside my hotel window and you can barely see it amongst the density here in midtown theatre district. It really is a cheater :(. At least 1WTC will be tallest to roof as well as spire when complete!
EDIT: beaten above! Wow, that just shows NYC really is a city with spires
Blizzy June 28th, 2011, 06:50 PM ^^ The 381 meter figure is such a hoax.
Sebosim June 28th, 2011, 06:52 PM Why is it a hoax for you?
kingsc June 28th, 2011, 07:19 PM BOA 945 without the spire. So if your not counting spires it's still the second tallest building in the city. And to make a point, the grey part of ESB is the spire which raises 1,250 feet. The crap on top of that is the antenna, which makes it 1,454 feet
vivaldi mausefalle June 28th, 2011, 07:56 PM BOA 945 without the spire. So if your not counting spires it's still the second tallest building in the city. And to make a point, the grey part of ESB is the spire which raises 1,250 feet. The crap on top of that is the antenna, which makes it 1,454 feet
1 WTC will be even worse, when it will be finished. With:
Antenna spire.......1,776 ft / 541.32 m
Roof...................1,368 ft / 417 m
Only Antenna spire height will be: 408 ft. / 124 m
600West218 June 28th, 2011, 08:11 PM The ESB height of 1250 is legit as people go to that height.
But this all does show how by roof height the WTC complex will transform how many buildings NYC has over 1,000 feet.
In fact, if it were built before the WTC 1 even 57 Carnegie would be the second tallest building in the city by roof height.
So NYC isn't in great shape by roof height right now but things should improve dramatically over the next 5 years or so
Blizzy June 28th, 2011, 08:45 PM I do realize that people go to that height. It's just the whole spire vs roof discussion has a background of differentiating towers with usable floors in their height from those, that change from regular floors to a spire made purely for height's sake. When you look at ESB it ends around 320m, and then a spire starts. Just because you can actually get into the lower part of it makes it count, while there can be no arguement that this is just a spire, with no real usable floors. It's unfair to towers like Chrysler, for example.

600West218 June 28th, 2011, 09:08 PM Yes, I understand your point but please remember that part of the ESB was not built for decorative purposes - it was built for dirigibles to dock to and load and unload passengers.
Also, it is still used every day - that is an observation deck that tourists go to. If you can't count observation decks then you can't count the top of lots of buildings such as the old WTC, the Sears building, etc. I would imagine the very stop floors of the Chrysler building before the spire begins are quite small and maybe no one goes there.
So yes it is small and not true office space but I think it is fair to count it in roof height comparisons. But of course this is my subjective opinion and others may view it differently.
javi92 June 28th, 2011, 09:44 PM Hi from Spain! I’ve created a profile because I wanted to THANK YOU for your daily updates, especially to Carlos (we’re all waiting for your new birthday’s present) and Otie (I don’t know where you get all those pics). I’ve been following this thread for a long time because I love skyscrapers and, of course, New York, that’s why I plan to move to this city in 2 years, nearly when it’s finished.
Now some question:
-Why isn’t there cladding on the base of the tower yet?
-Won’t there be a 6WTC finally?
-Any design of the 5WTC?

1. They aren't putting cladding on the base of WTC 1 yet because it would interfere with delivery to the upper floors, podium glass instillation will begin next year.
2. There aren't yet any plans for a 6 WTC.
3. Yes. There is a design for a WTC. Look on Wikipedia and type ' 5 WTC' or 130 liberty Street'. It will show you the design. However, construction has not yet begun because construction of another WTC project, the Vehicular Security Center & Bus Parking Facilities has begun. There are no plans for actual construction on WTC 5 to begin. But there is a design ready to go.

1. The cladding on the base was very difficult to manufacture, (meaning it broke a lot) so until they come up with a better type of glass, the base will be without cladding.
2. I believe the WTC Memorial is to be known as 6 WTC.
3. 5 WTC is currently on hold if I am not mistaken.
patrick989 June 28th, 2011, 10:14 PM 1. They aren't putting cladding on the base of WTC 1 yet because it would interfere with delivery to the upper floors, podium glass instillation will begin next year.
Does that mean just after the building tops out, or after the building tops out with all of the cladding and spire in place?
Optimum1368 June 28th, 2011, 10:31 PM Probably after all the cladding and after the spire's in place. It says on WTCProgress.com that glass for the base will be installed next year though.
Dave84 June 28th, 2011, 10:38 PM have they finally decided on what they doing with the base? what they using?

I take comfort in the fact, that if memory serves, the spire is only 48 feet taller than the North Tower antenna...

Nobody goes to the 102nd floor observation deck in the ESB. It's been closed since they put the antenna up. Something about radio waves and frying people's brains. It's still a real floor so it counts as an observation deck even if nobody goes there but techs. The mooring was a complete flop and I don't even think they got more than a couple of ships moored. Winds were too high and some people had issues with walking across a footbridge 1000 feet above the pavement. Go figure.
Whether or not to count the spire on a building seems to be a big point of contention among those of us who care about such things. I'm not a fan of counting the spire, especially now that there are so many buildings with them. It seems like a cheat. If you want to build the tallest building, then build the tallest building. Don't just build a tall building with the biggest flagpole. As far as I'm concerned there are only two categories:
1. Tallest building to the top of the roof. Observation decks count. Build this and you get to be tallest building.
2. Highest leased space. When you build the tallest building, part of the bonus is that you get to call your top floor "the highest office space" and charge accordingly.
germantower June 29th, 2011, 12:06 AM ^^ LOL strange that you say NODOBY goes up to the 102nd allthough i almost went up there as i was at the 86th floor Ob deck and they still sell tkts for it here: https://ticketing.esbnyc.com/Webstore/Content.aspx?Kind=LandingPage . haha Stick to the facts pls.

michael1984PL June 29th, 2011, 12:59 AM We want more steel every day!
Kanto June 29th, 2011, 01:22 AM Folks, if you want to truly compare heights, go to skyscraperpage and see their diagrams. Here is a link: http://skyscraperpage.com/diagrams/?cityID=8
This also shows that the roof height of 40 Wall Street is approximately 265 meters. This means that it's roof is smaller than that of the Chrysler Building, of the City Group Center and of Beekman.
As to the debate what is the roof of the Empire State Building, it all depends on where the stories, below the 102 observation deck, are. If they are in what looks as a spire, then it really is the roof. But if they are not, if floor 101 is below what appears to be the spire, then we have here a phenomenon I call "fake roof". If this situation is the case, then 330 meters is the real roof height, 381 meters is the fake roof height and 444 is the pinnacle height.
We can see an example of a fake roof at the abomination Libeskind created. There 346 meters is the real roof, 457 meters is the fake roof and 541 meters is the pinnacle:
http://www.glasssteelandstone.com/Images/US/NY/NYC/FreedomTower-002.jpg
Please, somebody who was there tell me where floors like 100 and 101 are? Are they below the 102 observation deck or are they far below it?
And as to my opinion about height measurements. I completely ignore the official measurement of spires yes, but antennas not. It has absolutely no logic to it. I view roof height as the primary measurement and pinnacle height and top floor height as secondary measurements.
yankee fan for life June 29th, 2011, 02:18 AM I was looking through all the old designs of 1 wtc while looking through the original designs i noticed that 1 wtc was going to be 610 meters tall, wondering why did they decreased the height of 1 wtc wished they kept it at 610 meters.:ohno:
Traynor June 29th, 2011, 02:19 AM ...
Please, somebody who was there tell me where floors like 100 and 101 are? Are they below the 102 observation deck or are they far below it?...
The ESB thread at SSP has many answers for questions like that...
The elevator and flights of stairs that go from the 86th floor observation level to 102 would equal the height of 16 floors. So they called it 102, but there are no actual floors there, other than staircase landings.
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/8215/11esbn3a.jpg(Courtesy NYGuy at SSP ESB thread found here: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=149360 )
Kanto June 29th, 2011, 02:35 AM So it's like an observation tower built on top of a skyscraper. This means that 381 meters are indeed a fake roof height. After all, an observation tower is no skyscraper. The real roof height should be 330 meters.
Im Using A Computer June 29th, 2011, 02:38 AM it is a thoroughly integrated component of the building that can be internally traversed, therefore it counts in the roof height.

Unfair to the chrysler building how? Chrysler the first building to steal WTB with a spire. And ESB over 200 feet taller than it. You can't say ESB got to be WTB because of it's spire.
Don't observation tower like CN tower have floor counts. The same rule apply for ESB spire.
Speaking of spires. Does anybody know if 1WTC spire, will change colors at night like, BOA spire?

the tower (above the base portion) has 8 sides. as it rises, 4 of the sides do not taper but go straight up, and the other 4 sides taper as they rise.

...I have to make an observation here, even tho we are a bit OT. It's very fortunate the airship plan didn't work out. Can you imagine what would have happened if the Hindenberg had blown up here, rather than in New Jersey? Oh the humanity!
Looking at the drawing, it's obvious the ESB's hieght should count all the way to the top (where the airship is moored). It's obvious it was intended to be a functional part of the building.

From what I've heard the frame (exterior) will completed and at its total hight by the 10th anniversary of 9-11. I've got a great view of the construction from the battery park from 30 floors up. I'll try and take a photo to upload here
SkyHeaven June 30th, 2011, 12:53 AM ^^ for the looks of this. WTC4 could be completed before WTC1.

ExclusiveOne June 30th, 2011, 02:23 AM I think I can see it out the window now. I live like 15 miles away in a straight line so it just looks like a box among other boxes, I think it's 1WTC because it's large and it definitely wasn't there before (among other reasons). I'll know for sure once it gets taller. If it is this'll be my first time seeing it.
Anyways, this thing is growing rapidly. 880 feet means it's super close to the halfway mark.

There does not seem to be any reinforcement in this concrete so i doubt it will be for vehicles as it would be too weak.
I must be wrong then if the diagram shows it as being Liberty Street!!!

Blizzy June 30th, 2011, 12:41 PM Unfair to the chrysler building how? Chrysler the first building to steal WTB with a spire. And ESB over 200 feet taller than it. You can't say ESB got to be WTB because of it's spire.
Don't observation tower like CN tower have floor counts. The same rule apply for ESB spire.
If so, where are the floors 87-101? From what I understand the 86 floor is the observation deck on the ROOF, then there is a spire with "imaginary floors", and then - BAM! level 102, observatory. This is what I think makes a 381 figure kinda hoaxy.
To illustrate, here is a quick drawing of two towers:
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/7715/roofj.png
The first one has 60 4m floors, 240 m total. The second has a 320 spire growing out of 40 floor (160 m) base, with an observation deck around 270m. Is it a 41 floor biulding? Or if I say that the spire with stairs and lifts and numberplates is actually 30 floors tall, but those floors are mechanical floors, it will actually make the second tower 71 floors? That is my point. Now imagine a third tower, without the observation deck, but WITH the same spire. Here are the roof heights: we would get a 240m tower, a 275m, and a 160. A hoax? Absolutely.
vivaldi mausefalle June 30th, 2011, 01:30 PM 1. Will there be any grass surface between those trees as shown in plans or. not?
2. Great I see the stairs at the edge of the park.
3. When will this pool be empty? I heard somewhere in June should be empty or very soon, isn't it?
4. And some stairs going underground? Where, to subway, cross the street?

That is an opinion. Others wouldn't necessarily share it. I go by what is the highest floor people actually go to. But again everyone can have their own opinion which is why we have to give various measures of height, there is no one standard that everyone agrees on.
Carlos, great pic. The side crane is now fully visible. If we can get a good shot of how far below it the cladding is we can calculate how long until you start seeing cladding.

I think I'd say the ESB is 381m tall with 87 floors.

The cladding is now almost fully installed at the 46th floor. Implying the 62nd floor is the first floor visible above 7 WTC, and assuming that the glass is being installed at the pace of one floor per week, the cladding should be above 7 WTC in 16 weeks (62-46), around mid October. In Carlos' pictures, there is a small part of the building visible to the right, which begins at the 53rd floor, so cladding should be visible there in 7 weeks, around mid August!
I'm not sure about all this, it's just an implication :D

So what is going on at that site right now? Is tower 5 under construction?
Bruce.Tenmile June 30th, 2011, 04:51 PM I can't agree on this one since I've been on the 102nd floor myself, so.......
I'd argue that you've been on the 87th floor. I've only just learnt all this though. I just assumed there were 102 full floors continuing up the spire.
I know this is off topic, but talking about all this misleading floor number stuff, I've always wondered how it works in a Trump building, particular the Trump World Tower, where the advertised number of floors and the floors listed in the elevator far exceeds the actual number of floors. Especially in the elevator, how do they pull this illusion off? Is there just a 20 floor chunk that is missed out?
oli83 June 30th, 2011, 05:25 PM So what is going on at that site right now? Is tower 5 under construction?
No, they are excavating for the vehicle security center (VSC), which is running through the site..
http://www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress/vehicle-security-center.html
What will be build on top of it is not decided yet as far as I know..
Blizzy June 30th, 2011, 05:53 PM I can't agree on this one since I've been on the 102nd floor myself, so.......
Numbering is irrelevant. Just ask the Chinese :) We are talking about usable floors. But this is off-topic, I just presented my point and hopefully explained it well enough. As it was said, others may, or may not share my point of view.
Anyway, back to 1WTC.
JD47 June 30th, 2011, 06:01 PM Cant wait to see it complete.
Last time I was there was March and I must say it is looking good.
Good work guys.
HK999 June 30th, 2011, 06:03 PM ^^ Look, it always depends. Let's say that a normal floor of 1WTC is 13'4'' (= 4,06400m). 417 : ~ 4,064 = 102,6. So 1WTC is actually a skyscraper with 102 floors, well at least that's the way I see it. Same goes for ESB.
