View Full Version : My favorite building in YOUR city is...

Ok folks, this thread is for anyone who's sick and tired of the rellentless, argumentitive, petty 'my cities better than your city' inter-city feuding that seems to be all that takes place in much of this section of the forum.

Seriously guys, step back from some of those threads once in a while and ask 'how many of these posts actually relate to buildings any more?' in some threads there's at least 4 personal snipes to every serious comment. What's the point? I had enough 'my dad's bigger than your dad' debates at school to not really want to spend my free time doing the 'grown up version' online thanks.

It's got so bad now that most people are genuinely surprised if you start praising any city other than your own... what's up with that?

So - this thread has a few simple rules, firstly and foremostly, you just gotta be positive about developments outside your own city. It really is that simple. Start a thread about a building you like in someone else's city and say why you like it. Secondly, if you don't like the building, don't bother posting about it. Seriously, there are so many threads where you can rant about how 'ugly, messy, short, tall, fat, thin, round, square etc etc' someone else's development is, but this isn't one of them. So please, only post a response if you've got something positive to say.

I'd really like to think that this forum is still about the buildings we love, and not about our precious egos... I guess this thread will test that out...

So, who's gonna kick us off?.........

This is one of my favourite buildings in Birmingham, in one of Birmingham's most important public squares, Victoria Square. The Council House says to me; "hey, you're now at the very heart of this great city".

Cheers FLD, (although you've kind of shot yourself in the foot by posting pictures of both the town you live in AND the town you were born in! But they were both positive, so I'll let ya off!)...

Ok, so I'll continue, I posted these pictures in the Birmingam thread a while ago, but they also belong here because it's one of my favorite buildings in the country at the moment, bold, beautiful, iconic and just down right fun! It's the Selfridges building...

Liverpool - Liver Building. I still haven't seen it in person but it looks like it has some sort of dominance still.

Manchester - Um, town hall I guess. Very grand gothic building indeed.

Leeds - The town hall again because its the only building I can actually think of at the moment (apart from Clarence Dock but that isn't as good).

London - Too many to choose from.

Btw does Liverpool have a Town Hall?

Yeah, but for a reason I can't remember its quite small, strange considering it was built while Liverpool was the '2nd city', anyway its nice but dwarfed by Exchange Flags and not as impressive as other city town halls.

My faves:

London: Gherkin
http://www.supinfo.com/SupinfoCommonResources/London%20-%20Gherkin%20building.jpg

Liverpool: Port of Liverpool OR Cunard building (the middle one of the 3 graces, its the smallest but its long and imo very very elegant)

Manchester: Whatever this is I love it!

Birmingham: Selfridges

You can probably guess I like 'old' architecture (but love the gherkin, plus in London there are about a trillion amazing old buildings to choose from). I like the quality of it all, the grandeur. The fact that they have lasted 100+ years and aren't going anywhere soon and nothing will really be built with such quality and workmanship again.

My favourite building outside of Brum/London is CJC in Manchester, in fact if not for Selfridges it would be my favourite outside of London, if it wasn't for the Gherkin it would be my favourite buidling in the UK.

It's also quite old, around 100 years older than the Manc, Leeds ones.

Opened in 1754 and substantially amended and refurbished after a fire in 1795. Town hall is still pockmarked by cannon shot after being targeted by disgruntled sailors unhappy about a tax increase.

Small but perfectly formed some might say. I have seen that before actually, I didn't realise it was the town hall, could do with a bit of a clean-up though.. Intersesting tidbit about the cannon shot. I wish there marks from musket balls or somethin on a building near me.

Also, Liverpool town hall is smaller than other, newer town halls because it served only as a ceremonial building, for receptions etc. Municipal offices etc were never part of the design. That's why the Municipal building was built down the street.

I think Im going to change my post later. Ill snoop around the leeds forum for a nice building because I think the town hall is a bit ugly. Its all good until you get to that wierd dome attempt on top, it looks badly proportioned, almost 'stretched' upwards. Nottinghams town hall is nicer.

Theres loads more wicked buildings in Bristol but it would take me ages to list them all... Do remember that Bristol was the second most important city in the UK (Commenly called the "Second Capital") during the war and was Bombed almost as bad as London... No other city in the UK took as much damage during the war as London And Bristol yet we still have some really nice buildings...

Bristol has now climbed its way back up the ladder as being a Very important city in the UK and will only get better... Come and pay a visit and see for yourself... Bristol is also one of the "Capital Of Culture" citys...

Birmingham: Town Hall
Manchester: Town Hall (really really Nice Building)
Liverpool: Liver Building (seems to be everyones choise, I dont really like Liverpool though)
Cardiff: The Millenium Building (One with those Massive Letters On the Outside)
Bristol: Wells Memorial Building, Bristol Cathedral Or Victoria Rooms (One of these three, Cant put my finger on which one)
London: St Pauls Cathedral (the rest of London is OK..)
Leeds: Town Hall
Sheffield: None
Nottingham: Town Hall (The one in Market Square)

I used to live in the south. The architecture in the north is of higher quality generally. Theres a few good ones in the south, but pretty much all the cities are destroyed somewhere with ugly buildings. Bristol has some nice buildings, but ive always thought of it as a bit of a backwards city. Most cities, mainly in the north but some in the south (Parts of London, Portsmouth) have regenerated; Bristol's just stayed the same and rested on its laurels. How can you say the Town Hall is all in Leeds anyway. What about Kirkgate Market/CornX/City Square/Civic Hall/The Headrow buildings/Victoria Quarter/Princes Exchange/Park Row/Estates/Tower Works/Calls.

Orgoglioso
December 22nd, 2006, 07:54 PM
I agree, those who say that the town hall is all there is in Leeds have obviously not been there, The civic hall is just as beatiful and in some senses has more of an impact then the town hall due to Millenium square. Also inside the corn exchange you see a wonderful example of Victorian architectural brilliance. I wouldn't really expect more from someone from the south, make too many sweeping generalisations about the north and are up their own a**holes.

Sound's a bit snobbish to me. I don't see how you can generalise 'the north' like that. And since when has Birmingham been in the north?

I like Bristol, because of all the wonderfull victorian/georgian buildings, but last time I went (about 6 months ago), nothing had changed since the time before, so I think i'm gonna have to agree Leeds No. 1, that Bristol seems to be resting on it's behind in terms of regeneration. (An before you fire back, I know there's some projects going on in Bristol, they just didn't seem very evident when I was there.)

Anyway. For the sake of the thread;

Leeds: Probably the Corn exchange
Manchester: Not sure what it's called, but it's the big victorian university building on the northen (I think) edge of the campus
Liverpool: Liver building
Birmingham: I wasn't too keen on Selfridges when I saw it in the flesh, so it's gonna be the Council house.
Cardiff: Can't make up my mind.

I'm afraid I don't know Newcastle, or Glasgow enough to pick one.

I think a lot of English people have very little experience of Wales in general. I do apologise for my own ignorance, after just a little research I think that my favourite building in Cardiff is the Welsh Assembly Building. It looks incredibly light and delicate compared to a lot of the very bulky structures which seem to be the fashion of the UK in general.

Birmingham: Selfridges; dont think theres much contest- lots of nice but not outstanding buildings.
Leeds: Kirkgate Market
Glasgow: Central Station or Armadillo or Kelvinhall
Sheffield: Winter Gardens
Bradford: City Hall
Liverpool: Royal Liver Building
Edinburgh: Castle
Manchester: Town Hall
Bristol: Temple Meads.

For some of them though, there are few outstanding. Alot of the architecture is nice; but nothing striking. Edinburgh, Bristol and Sheffield I think fall into those. London and Glasgow have endless.

Im not being rude by saying that i dont like the north too much... Its my opinion and your welcome to yours And Birmingham is in the Midlands I know but its north to me (Bristol and London) so I just put that its in the north, I do appolgise...

Also you say theres not much evidence of work being done here??? Theres a Massive 1 Billion Pound Regeneration project which is the Biggest Retail Project ever in the UK going on SLAP BANG in the the CENTER of the city... Without being rude, You must have walked around with your eyes closed, because seriously theres so many Cranes and Building work going on its NUTS... the Temple Quarter is also another Project which is going on and this is also in close proximity to the Center... Then thes Colston Hall (To be fair that was not being worked on six months ago) and Bristol Arena, Temple Meads, Quarkers Quarter... BRISTOL has changed so much in my lifetime and im only 20 years old... St Mary Le Port Project is another... Ferzils Quay another... My god theres so much going on here theres no way you could have not seen any building work... More Projects include The Harbourside and Docks, The Bristol Royal Infermary (also known as The BRI), New Bus Station and Magistrates Courts... Theres so many projects going on that I thouught I would just list some websites below to give you a idea...

Temple Gate:
http://www.ballymore.co.uk/site/ba_frameset.php

Bristol Harbourside:
http://www.bristol-harbourside.co.uk/default.asp

Bristol Cabot Quarter:
http://www.bristolalliance.co.uk/default.asp?PageID=1

Temple Quarter:
http://www.templequarter.com/

Broad Quay:
http://www.aww-uk.com/ProjectPage.asp?name=mixed+use&pgno=1&intprojectid=429

Pro Cathedral:
http://www.aww-uk.com/ProjectPage.asp?name=mixed+use&pgno=1&intprojectid=844

Colston Hall:
http://www.colstonhall.org/redevelopment

These are only some of the regeneration projects going on... Thers still so much more I could put in... You say that you were here six months ago, well the Bristol Cabot Quarter has been going on for the past year and a half and the website has webcams on it so obviously you didnt really see much of Bristol At All, after all it is a really big city so you might have only gone to a area which was nowhere near Central Bristol. Or gone to a area which was the main Part of that District of Bristol you were in and thought is was the Center... I dont know exactly where you went but you deffinatly have not seen BRISTOL at all...

Im know that other citys also do have great projects but I dont deny this... And neither should you...

I think you are quite rude. If you dont like the north and Liverpool, Sheffield I think you should'nt really say it. It can offend people. If you got bored in Sheffield you obviously did'nt give it a chance. I have lived here all my life and there are still things that I have yet to see and that surprise me.

He's not being rude its his opinion, which he's entitled too.

Having lived in sheffield for about 20 out of my 22 years alive i still like the city but it has many flaws which im sure in a few years wont be there.

Interesting thread!

Liverpool-Anfield. The way it sits there so big and sparkling amongst the terraced housing is really interesting. Plus it represents what the city is most famous for.

Nottingham-That city hall square thing..Seen a bit of it recently in trade magazines. It looks really great-the finest city hall and square in the UK

Sheffield-The winter gardens were interesting, but actually a let down inside. Nothing overly stood out, although parkhill flats are interesting. Nice city overall though.

Leeds-No idea really, but I think it has a nice city hall, and some of those new 'scrapers look good

Manchester-Beetham tower just looks so unique

Caaardiff-hmm, I love the castle for the stunning views of it that pop up as you walk around the city..Millennium stadium, BT Tower and Millennium centre too.

London-so many really. Probably Canary Wharf though..just blocky and stunning, even if it is a big monument to Thatcherism! Tate Modern is great too.

Birmingham-some tall office block I saw there in the city centre..Villa Park is nice too. Nice to see an architectural effort on the newer stands. Definately not bloody Selfreidges..YUCK!

Bristol-Architecture generally is good, but nothing stands out. Maybe St Mary Redcliffe Church

Swansea-Not a building, The beautiful natural sweep of the Bay overwhelm them all.

Newcastle-A real architectural gem of a city it seems-The bridge, that glass domey thing and the art place that was a mill or something look great.

Edinburgh-nothing stands out-the whole city looks nice though

Glasgow-I'm afraid I wouldn't really know.

Newport-The civic centre clock tower building-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Newportciviccentre.jpg

Hull-that glassy thing by the water.

The UNESCO World Heritage Report says otherwise (not surprisingly).

They say:

Royal Liver Building

It is notable as one of Britain's first multi-storey reinforced concrete framed buildings. Stylistically unique in England, it is more akin to the early tall buildings of America such as the Allegheny Court House (1884) by H. H. Richardson and the Garrick (formerly Schiller) Theatre by Adler and Sullivan, with eclectic Baroque, art nouveau and Byzantine influences in its modelling.

The Royal Liver Building is said to have been inspired by The Royal London Building both architecturally and by name

It has also been said by many, many more far reputable sources, that it was inspired by the Chicago school of architecture. Also, it was probably (but don't quote me on this) named after the Royal Liver Friendly Society (now Royal Liver Assurance) who built, own and occupy the building.

crusty_bint
December 14th, 2008, 05:11 PM
You could also infer that inspiration was taken from what was happening in Glasgow, notably the various commercial warehouses of Alexander Thomson and JJ Burnett (1850s onward), and more specifically Burnett & Campbell's Athenaeum Theatre (1891), Salmon & Gillespie's St Vincent Chambers (aka 'The Hatrack', 1899) and their early hennebique construction Lion Chambers (1904) or even the earlier Anderson's Central Station [hotel] (1882) and Barclay's Greenock Municipal Buildings (1881).

But. And its a big but. It would be a futile academic exercise, much like any one city trying to lay claim to the progenesis of the grid system.

The Liver Building is Liverpools: a product of what was happening in the city at the time and a reaction to the specific local needs and constraints. There is no one influence that can be singled out, other than the city itself :)

Interesting pick, I used to think this was a big sweet shop when I was a kid! It needs a bit of attention as its looking very tired these days, which is sad. Maybe someone will turn it into a Titanic theme hotel?

 well it's offices at the moment but its mostly empty IIRC. I'd rather see it in use than falling to bits!

I know, it's a bit of a random choice, but I've got a soft-spot for it. It's got so much character and I love the red-and-white colour scheme. Sad to hear that it's looking a bit tired these days, hopefully they'll find a new use for it over the next few years and give it a makeover.

Reminds me a bit of these buildings, just a stone's throw from the Houses of Parliament (the same architect?):

the old Scotland Yard

The top was blown off the White Star building in WWII. You can notice the repair line on that pic if you look carefully. Slightly different colour brick and slightly less detail.

Based mostly on what I've seen on this site my list is as follows (apologies for lack of photos)-

Bristol - Granary building. A funny place Bristol - some stunning stuff and some very, very nice suburbs but quite a lot of it's best architecture is drowning in a sea of shit (Temple Meads station is a case in point...)

Portsmouth - Spinnaker. I worked in Portsmouth for a very long summer back in the early 90's. All I can say is I'm glad it's improved....

Leeds - the very ornate Victorian arcade whose name escapes me and I can't be arsed looking up

Manchester - Civil Justice Building. Lot's of big, new buildings some of which will stand the test of time some of which won't. This is the best of the bunch though.

Hull - the Deep

Swansea - the Guildhall. This city could be one of the most stunning in Europe being blessed as it is with such a wonderful location. Regretably much of the built enviroment is pretty dire (which is par for the course with most Welsh towns and cities unfortunately) although it is improving.

Sheffield - can't really think of any one building. Not a slur on Sheffield more my ignorance. I've been there a few times and I like the place but nothing really grabbed me.

Newcastle - Tyne Bridge. A bit of a cop out really but after being on this site it is one of the cities in the UK that I really want to go to.

Nottingham - law building at Nottingham Trent Uni/the art deco building on Castle Boulevard/Hand in Heart pub. I love Nottingham, very underated in my opinion. I would have stayed there if it was by the sea.

Liverpool - Liver Building/Mersey Tunnel ventilation shaft/tobacco warehouse. I've only been to Liverpool once and have mixed memories of it. Some great buildings but it felt run down. That was probably over a decade ago now though. One of the cities that I really want to re-visit with open eyes. Theres no denying that it has one of the ebst waterfronts anywhere and a pretty substantial architectural heitage.

Birmingham - lived here for 2 years in the late 80's which makes me feel embarrassed that I can't really think of anything that stands out. Rotunda maybe - I hear it's been re-clad. I'd probably say the University with the clock tower though.

Glasgow - the carpet warehouse/Central station. Another city I want to visit asap.

London - BBC/RIBA building in Portland Place/Catholic cathedral near Victoria station

As for Cardiff I think of the older buildings it would be the City Hall and of the newer buildings it would be Wales Millenium Centre.

ah, you picked a classic there with 16 Cook St jayo.:)

This always vies with Martins Bank building as to what my favourite building in Liverpool is!

I've been thinking of my own list but have decided that all of our cities have too many nice buildings for me to be so difinitive!

I wonder if this building drew inspiration from it:

Really wish they'd rebuilt the gable as it was, I'll never look at the building in the same way now...........it's still a great building though.

I very much doubt that it will ever be rebuilt as it was, even if the building does get a refurb. It would be great if it was though.

Suburban Knight, whereabouts is the similar-looking modern building?

That similar looking building is on East Parade in Central Leeds.

I had never associated them with each other but now you put them next to each other, I wouldn't be suprised if that building did draw inspiration from the White Star Offices.

The Rep theatre needs a serious makeover looking at it you can see that ''Jet age sci-fi look of the 1950s through to the early 1970s that never really took off style''in it's design dying to break out.

I've been thinking of my own list but have decided that all of our cities have too many nice buildings for me to be so difinitive!

Same, but think of it this way: all the British cities are going to have atomic bombs dropped on them and you can only save one building from each, which ones would they be? (refusal will mean all the buildings will get destroyed  including your precious three graces)

I think the Old Rep is a lovely building ,the new one I think does a job as well, not so good looking from the back though.

Newcastle- The sage

Damn it, do I have to be the one to say this.

The Sage is not in Newcastle, it's in Gateshead.

And if you have picked that out as you're best, then you havn't seen the true amount of what Newcastle has to offer.

Perhaos Newcastle was used as an abreviation of 'Newcastle upon Tyne'.

Dunno why people are getting their knickers is a twist, Ive said it before, Newcastle and Gateshead are the same place.

Just two parts of one city.
