This was taken by an OC resident who attended an APTA (American Public Transportation Association) tour of the LA Harbor in April 2005. It was a chartered trip that started at Union Station and went to San Pedro - via the Alameda Corridor! It was the first time a passenger train traveled on the Alameda Corridor.

Can someone please explain that Red Car trolley? Are these back in operation or something? I had no idea.

San Pedro has a trolley line along the harbor. It's been there since 2003, I think to state that they want to increase public transportation down there.

The Port of Los Angeles operates a Red Car line along the waterfront from the cruise terminal to 22nd St. It runs from Friday to Monday the days the cruise ships arrive. It's meant as a tourist attraction a la the SF Cable Cars, but some 'Pedro residents want it extended further to serve as a mini-transit line for the portside community. Councilwoman Janice Hahn supported an extension down to Cabrillo Beach. Other residents want it extended inland to the San Pedro Downtown area, or north to Wilmington or even Long Beach to connect with th Blue Line (which isn't very likely).
The line uses three trolley cars, two are recreations of PE trolleys and one actual restored Pacific Electric Red Car.
As dlbritnot said, it's been running since 2003. It doesn't run every day but come down on the weekends and it's there. It costs $1 for a ticket, and your ticket is good for unlimited rides for the whole day.
I believe the line sets a precedent for other ex-Red Car communities to have their own tourist attraction trolley line. The Pacific Electric name and trademark is owned by the Electric Railway Historical Society of Southern California, who is more than willing to support any recreation of the Red Cars operate anywhere in Southern California, including a proposed streetcar in Downtown Los Angeles.
