Mirza, NSC Tower looks awesome in this picture. What excites me more is seeing those other under construction buildings in the picture. Motijheel skyline is going to be dynamite in a few years. Specially when the City Centre, the City Bank Building and the Sadharan Bima building are going to be done.

Its amazing to see how in less than ten years gulshan went from a relatively empty street to one of the most important commercial areas in the country. Hopefully other areas can replicate its success.

And the good thing is..more construction is going on now than ever before..if we can only keep doing for ten years more what we have been doing for the last ten years,then Dhaka may reach the standards of southeast asian financial capitals.

The building in the second photo is the one opposite to Brac centre as u might have guessed..but i dont really know what these two new buildings are called.Btw..would u know how tall the BTMA tower is going to be,the one that would be built just opposite to the proposed Dhaka Hilton.

A few pics from my Dhaka trip Dec 30 - Jan 8. The mixture of fog and smog did not make for very good photo conditions - visibility was no more than one or two miles. The first five pictures are taken from the roof of Mehraba Plaza; the final pic is from the 29th floor of Banladesh Bank.

A few pics from an atypical vantage point. The following were taken from the roof of my grandfather's house. On my last trip in 2000, this had a largely unobstructed view of Motijheel. No longer the case...

First, the three buildings that started giving Dhaka the skyline it has today - Jibon Bima Corporation, Shilpa Bank (you can just see the top) and Janata Bank.

The current king has gone into hiding! Six years ago, there was a good view of Bangladesh Bank and Sena Kalyan Bhaban from here...but no more! These two are in the way...the taller one has a name something like Dhaka Bank Training Institute.

Mirza, there are lots of people building highrise appartments. I am not sure about the one in the pics, but our next door neighbors are building a 18 storey one. My extended family actually has 3 buildings here in Arambagh - two five storey and one four storey. I couldn't convince them to build a highrise :ohno: - this would mean either giving up land rights to a developer or cause financial problems - but the current plan is to tear down the four storey building and rebuild it as a more modern 6 - 8 storey one. We'll see.

The road you take to get to Arambagh, Inner Circular Road, has a good number of highrises, including several 20 storey ones. Sorry but I didn't get any good pics. This road starts near the Chief Justice's house and ends at Shapla Chattar. I haven't seen too many pics of it in this forum.

I actually have some photos from 2000 from the same roof - if I ever get round to buying a scanner and scanning them in, it would make a nice comparison to how much the area has built up since then. I also have some baby pictures before there were any 20 storey buildings in Motijheel, with the skyline in the background, but I won't be posting those :). Back in those days (1970s) we had only one two storey house here and you had a good view of skyline from that - no chance today. Back in those days the actual Moti Jheel was still there - I remember riding my tricycle up to the waterside with my cousin.

Tanzirian,I really liked the photos of shantinagar and motijheel that you took,ofcourse they would have been even more better if it wasn't so foggy that day.Hope you guys build a nice mid-rise there : ) and please do try to share with us the pics u took in 2000,it would be really nice if we could see the actual development that took place in these 6 years.Motijheel sure has changed,dont think its gonna safe for you to try cycling there now ; ).Anyways,i will try my best to get some shots of the area you described,alot of construction going on in dilkusha too,have to check that place out as well.

The nice thing is, the next time I go to Bangladesh (in a few years) I can use our neighbor's 18 storey rooftop for photos. That will be nice especially if they get round to finishing City Centre by then.

By the way, I think CityCenter project along with the Gulistan (or jatrabari) flyover project might be in limbo right now as the building company, Orion group, is in big trouble. It's owner along with 20 directors are in hiding, as they have warrant of arrest for embezzlements of around 600 crore taka from Orion bank.

^^ I didn't see any active construction on City Centre in early January when I was back in BD, so that may be why. I had thought that perhaps Eid vacation and political unrest were the reasons. Hopefully they will get round to finishing it - be it Orion or someone else. Of course for us fans it will be nice to get a new tallest building, but Motijheel would also benefit from some updated business facilities.

Also at that time, I had the pleasure of experiencing Jatrabari traffic in the late afternoon / evening. To say that a flyover, or other diversion, would help, is an understatement :) . So hopefully they will sort things out and get on with both these projects.

Can't another company take over the responsibilities of the flyover as its such a neccesary addition of dhaka's transportation system. And i am really hopefully someone else could take over the repsonsibilities for city centre as it was labeled as a landmark for the country.

Btw does anyone have pics of some of the new uttara buildings? There were several under construction just north of sector 3 i think the last time was there.

Tmac,the signboard says,'Rural Electrification Board' saw many times while passing by, on 143rd Post's last pic captioned as Rural Insurance Building. Is it what the building's name? Quite old building I guess, as I 've been seeing this from my childhood.

Good shots Tmac!Kawranbazar is looking great,and the good news is,its still getting alot of new buildings.The head office building of Bank Asia and another 18 storey Borak Zahir Tower will be constructed opposite to T.K Bhaban and BSRS bhaban.Construction of another building called 'The Royal Tower' has already started just beside Unique Trade Centre.One more tower is coming up right next to the HRC head office building.So the Kawranbazar area is bound to look even better in the near future.

Wow kawran bazaar is really filling up. Amazing to think that just a few years ago that entire part of the city was pretty much completely empty. Dhaka is growing so fast.

This one shouldn't be unknown. I am talking about the last one.
Its Suvastu Nazar Valley on Pragati Sarani,Shahjadpur. It is one of the biggest project I guess. It is actually a cluster of six buildings together. Each of 'em is 18 storey; each floor has 8 appartments of different sizes. so 6*18*8 appartments! The six buildings are apparently one up to 5th floor, thats a mall already running.While I lived on 10th floor of tower 3 for 2 years, there were only 4 towers, and 2 more were under construction (the most visible two on this pic).Yor can find this one easily on Google Earth. I hope to post some more pics of this one, as it is not as bad-looking as it seems here on this pic!

Photos cannot capture the grandeur of Suvastu Nazar Valley. I watch that building with awe whenever I pass infront of it.

Rendering of this one is in mirza's post on the 7th page of Dhaka projects Thread...I can assure now its exactly like this, all the parts are finished except the seventh tower not ready completely. People are already living in most of apts for a few years.

It would be nice to see some interior pics of Suvastu Nazar Valley, especially the shopping mall. The shopping mall was inaugurated last year, I believe, yet we haven't seen any pics. This is one of the grand projects of Dhaka and deserves some publicity.

This is Facilities Tower, located in mid-badda,Progoti soroni, a couple of km south to Suvastu Nazar Valley and a few hundreds meters north of BTV in Rampura. Ya, there is a branch office of Prime bank on the ground floor. I remember a year back or so, I went there for some works for a telecom operator company. There are mobile phone switching equipments of Ericsson for GP and of ZTE for Worldtel in this building.

Two die in Dhaka building blaze

At least two people have been killed and more than 50 injured after fire swept through a multi-storey building in the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
Firefighters put the blaze out after a dramatic four-hour battle. Scores of people were winched to safety from the tower blocks by helicopter.

Hundreds more were rescued by fire crews. At least one person died after jumping to escape flames, reports said.

It is not clear what caused the blaze in Dhaka's Kawranbazar district.

'Like hell'

More than 2,000 people usually work in the office tower, which houses two television channels and a newspaper owned by a politician.

Television footage showed dozens of office workers on the rooftop waiting for air force helicopters to take them to safety.

One woman died when she jumped from her office window to escape the flames and another worker died in hospital, reports say.

"About 60 of us were working on the sixth floor and all of a sudden we saw smoke all over our floor," cameraman Jashim Uddin told AFP news agency.

"We ran to the balconies and cried for help. It was like hell."

The building is owned by the Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation.

The biggest private TV station in Bangladesh, NTV, is based in the building together with RTV and the daily Bengali newspaper, Amar Desh.

They are all owned by former MP Mosaddek Ali Falu, a close ally of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

^^ that's exactly what I was thinking. I wasn't sure what that other skyline was but it was really cool how the picture captures both of them. Well taken picture. I think at some point...some of these skylines will merge. It's bound to happen :)

By "these" I don't mean necessarily these 2...I just meant the various other skylines in the city now that there are quite a few of them.

There are good and bad side of this. Banani was created as a residential area. Within the last 10 years lots of commercial buildings have been constructed diminishing the glory and peace of the residential status once it held.

Hi Zafir. welcome to the forum. Yes we all know about Sena Bhaban but we don't know why it was cancelled. No one seems to know anything about the project.

All in good time. We are still a very poor country. Such a project would probably have cost at least a billion dollars, and there is no way that we could justify that kind of an expense at this stage of our development, if indeed we could afford it in the first place, which I doubt. Besides, it could very well bring the wrong kind of recognition - for example North Korea trying to build a 1000 ft hotel while its economy is in shambles. On the other hand, Japan is the most heavily industrialized country in Asia, and there are no buildings that tall over there.

Rather much better to invest in local industry and in improving opportunities for the disadvantaged, which in time will itself generate the kind of revenue necessary to fund such projects when they become a more practical proposal at some point in the future.

Tanzirian thank you for your welcome and thank you for your opinion. I understand that we are still a poor country but you don't understand that the Sena Bhaban project was already started however money wasn't the issue for why it was cancelled. In fact, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and the UK had contributed to the funds and indeed the money went through for the project. My cousin who came from Bangladesh a few months ago had a job with the Dhaka City Corporation and verified this info with me and told me that the company building it had some issues. Although I'm not crazy to know why Sena Bhaban was cancelled I just wanted to get some info because I had my hopes up for my beloved country. once again thank you tanzirian and all of you guys for welcoming me to the forum; my uncle is in bangladesh right now and will send me photos of his vacation and will send me some pics on the new development in dhaka city as well as some of the improvements that they have made at the Sylhet and Chittagong international airports. Ill be able to post them up in the near future.
