So pretty much that's Accra's backyard right there! That being said, I do believe that it has potential. We just need the right people in the right places to turn it around and give it that post card skyline/waterfront scene that is all so common with so many cities around the world including our neighbors. jeff91 October 27th, 2011, 07:15 PM http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6056/6285844350_a621f86105_b.jpg jeff91 October 28th, 2011, 12:06 AM http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6125/6009251882_feda90f96e_b.jpg http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6215/6284063221_1b80d8f2a0_b.jpg http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6005/5999025589_145e52cb6b_b.jpg royal_ron2012 October 28th, 2011, 10:48 PM http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50600000/jpg/_50600556_06accra_emmanuelbobbie.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3214/2878811352_39d3e3bd54_z.jpg?zz=1 niireo October 29th, 2011, 10:23 AM ^^Tetteh Quarshie , Accra mall in the background awesome , how do you take sure pics lady gaga October 29th, 2011, 11:02 AM http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50600000/jpg/_50600556_06accra_emmanuelbobbie.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3214/2878811352_39d3e3bd54_z.jpg?zz=1 Wooooow nice pics !!! kiligoland October 29th, 2011, 03:05 PM isnt that china orrrr lol japanese:) Simfan34 October 30th, 2011, 02:36 AM isnt that china orrrr lol Japan, by the looks of it. royal_ron2012 November 5th, 2011, 04:02 AM http://d2-04.twitpicproxy.com/photos/large/412000865.jpg royal_ron2012 November 7th, 2011, 01:27 AM http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50759759.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50760232.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50690146.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/51090224.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/51090228.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50761763.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50762146.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50684438.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50655460.jpg http://www.panoramio.com/img/lookaround-22x20.png http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50654508.jpg http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/50691199.jpg earlat November 9th, 2011, 02:28 AM I never thought Ghana is soo Beautiful.. Hopefully that si changing! :) In all honesty,Accra does look like a modernized well maintained version of Ibadan.Generally,West African cities are rather uninspiring perhaps because the colonial masters were never really interested in settling down here. So they just laid foundations for 'anyhow anyhow' structures to meet their immediate economic needs. The reverse is the case for Southern African cities like Nairobi,Harare,Windhoke,Johannesburg,Cape town and the rest. But to a large extent i must give it to Lagos,Abidjan and Abuja...they are a bit above average on the 'inspiring' scale. Accra must work harder though. apollojoe December 2nd, 2011, 04:59 PM In all honesty,Accra does look like a modernized well maintained version of Ibadan.Generally,West African cities are rather uninspiring perhaps because the colonial masters were never really interested in settling down here. But to a large extent i must give it to Lagos,Abidjan and Abuja...they are a bit above average on the 'inspiring' scale. Accra must work harder though. You couldn't have put it in a better way. I agree with you totally on this. Accra lags behind a lot of African Cities in terms of Aesthetics and even adequate infrastructure. Having said this, it's obvious that an effort is being made to turn that around. One other problem I have with Accra is the inability of the authorities to control human activity that negatively impacts the functionality of the Infrastructure. Freeways should be strrictly enforced as such and not turned into streets where pedestrians can cross at random spots or where public transport can pick up passengers, or where hawkers can peddle their wares. Naijaborn December 2nd, 2011, 06:38 PM Lagos, Abidjan and Abuja weren't 'inspring cities" as at the time the colonialists left either. popa1980 December 2nd, 2011, 06:55 PM Ive heard Ghanaians make this excuse before- Accra looks like it was because the British didnt care about it because it was not a settler city like Nairobi or Harare. Accra looked better during the 50s than it did now, there were strict town planning laws, you werent actually allowed to build shacks. There was a colonial plan in the 50s to redevekop Accra into a more European style city with parkes and wide boulevards but it was ignored post-independence. I keep on saying that Im going to write to the city authorities asking them why they havent came up with a city plan. It doesnt even cost that much money on the whole scale of things. You pay a few million dollars to an urban planning company. If Kigali could afford to do it, so can Accra. publisher 2 December 2nd, 2011, 09:10 PM Ive heard Ghanaians make this excuse before- Accra looks like it was because the British didnt care about it because it was not a settler city like Nairobi or Harare. The colonialists had supreme power over the natives in those days,it was easy for them to strictly enforce settlements laws. Today,Accra is both capital and economic nerve centre of Ghana, settlers and squatters will always populate the suburbs and out skirts, evicting them forcefully only creates more social problems. The best bet is for Ghana to follow the Nigerian path and build a new capital city. Such that settlers know their limits from the outset. Abuja as new as it is also has ghettos and shanty towns sprawling up but these areas are very very far from the city centre, sometimes as far as 2hours drive on a traffic free road. publisher 2 December 2nd, 2011, 09:18 PM Lagos, Abidjan and Abuja weren't 'inspring cities" as at the time the colonialists left either. lol...Abuja was a savanah forest area when the colonialists left. Lagos, LOL, When people talk of development in Lagos, no one even talks about the Gross Marina and Lagos Island in general anymore......... New developments springing up in other areas of the city.
