what a horrible waterfront.

That's Accra for you, with that whole turning it's back to the sea thing! So pretty much that's Accra's backyard right there! That being said, I do believe that it has potential. We just need the right people in the right places to turn it around and give it that post card skyline/waterfront scene that is all so common with so many cities around the world including our neighbors.

I havent been to Accra for 10 years but it is a pretty uninspiring city. There is still to much a focus on random buildings scattered over the city rather than coherent planning but thats SSA for you.

In all honesty,Accra does look like a modernized well maintained version of Ibadan.Generally,West African cities are rather uninspiring perhaps because the colonial masters were never really interested in settling down here. So they just laid foundations for 'anyhow anyhow' structures to meet their immediate economic needs. The reverse is the case for Southern African cities like Nairobi,Harare,Windhoke,Johannesburg,Cape town and the rest. But to a large extent i must give it to Lagos,Abidjan and Abuja...they are a bit above average on the 'inspiring' scale. Accra must work harder though.

You couldn't have put it in a better way. I agree with you totally on this. Accra lags behind a lot of African Cities in terms of Aesthetics and even adequate infrastructure. Having said this, it's obvious that an effort is being made to turn that around. One other problem I have with Accra is the inability of the authorities to control human activity that negatively impacts the functionality of the Infrastructure. Freeways should be strrictly enforced as such and not turned into streets where pedestrians can cross at random spots or where public transport can pick up passengers, or where hawkers can peddle their wares.

Aerial shots of Accra are rare and the few in existence are boring and lack character. That will definitely change if that 40 floor Twin towers proposal is built along with a few other proposed projects including a complete makeover of the waterfront.

Im not a fan of these new build cities. They usually look good but are pretty sterile. I would live in Lagos over Abuja. The other option would be to change the capital to somewhere like Cape Coast. Accra would remain the commercial capital and CC would be like Canberra or DC.

That building is now complete. It's opposite Accra Mall, Between East Legon Residential and Kwame Nkrumah Motorway.

Accra is slowly, but gradually rising...Our current Gov. is trying but boi! is our president slow!...I hate to talk about politics here but, as a formal NDC supporter, I must say that the NPP vision for Ghana is the way to go. Our generation will definitely transform Africa..We lack the colonial mentality, and that's what we need to move forward.

Yeah there are height limits, but there should be a separate district apart from the historic/old section of the city which will contain all the tallest buildings. Something like La Defense or the Canary Wharf in London. :dunno:

Its horrible. I think its maybe the "shortest" city of its size in Africa. You know you can live in a BUNGALOW in CENTRAL Accra? This sprawl will make public transport VERY expensive to develop.

Very nice roads although the american flags brought the rating down a star in my opinion, "leeches" they are.

Agreed but the road is great. I went it on it a few times including when I went to Cape Coast. Very fast and quick.

The tallest buildings in Accra ( I didn't even consider them tall, let alone the tallest till someone in the car pointed it out) is the height of an average office building. Accra really lacks a skyline and it needs one.
