Ghana has many nice highways , an industrial powerhouse. My Ghanaian penpal lives near Kotoka Airport. He's originally from Kumase as his father works in Oil Palm sector.

I just watched the Amazing Race All-Star series and today they are visiting Mozambique . It is very impressive country from what I saw on TV, Maputo is very well-ordered with magnificent scrapers, markets and streets are all clean . I hope that next time they will visit Ghana and Nigeria too

OMG give me that Jollof Rice and Chicken ( is the rice mixed with tomato blend ? )!!!!!!!!! I haven't eaten dinner and am very hungry !!!

Impressive!!! Seems like Ghana is finally shining. Love those new highways and highrises.

Though the sign in this pic showing a fine of 500,000 cedi is quite odd.
I thought that Ghana had revalued their currency to reflect their economy. How much is this in terms of US dollars?

Considering Ghana has one of the highest standard of livings in SSA (according to the well-reputed UN HDI listings) Accra is a very backward city and unattractive city. It compares unfavourably with places like Dakar, Lusaka and even Kinshasha. I would put my birth town Kumasi ahead of Accra aswell in terms of aesthetics.

Since the British left, townplanning has been non-existent. Accra is far too spread out ad growing ineffeciently. If there were tight city boundaries then people would be forced to build high rise buildings.

I dont like the Americanisation of Accra either. It would be better to follow a European model of "city centres" i.e. a central districts full of bustling high quality shoppong streets. The American model of malls in the rich suburbs will lead to further polarisation of society. America is now trying to reinvigorate its downtown areas after all these years of neglect so we should learn from that mistake. Compare New York with its vibrant central Manhattan compared to suburban-oriented Los Angeles.
That applies to all African nations who are now adopting the polarised suburban lifestyle.

Osu High Street should be redeveloped as an attractive shopping destination. I mean, with benches, trees, nicely and uniformedly paved sidewalks etc etc.

I would also love to see the Red Square-like Independece Square dug up and replaced with something more aesthetically pleasing. How about some grass and some flowers like they have in Western countries.

How far has the development of Korle lagoon gone?

Accra has a new Metro bus system, using these new buses(some of which are double deckers like this one) that I believe are built by a Chinese company(to venture a guess, I'd say Yutong Bus, but I'm not sure). Generally, its agreed that the buses are modern and look clean, but they don't always arrive on time, and the tro-tros(minibuses) are still preferred by most.

I still think Accra is an ugly city when compared to say, Dakar in Senegal. The problem being that Accra was not planned and was actually three towns that merged.
Since the colonials left town planning has gone out of the window and developments have been carried out haphazardly.

Matthias Offodile
March 28th, 2008, 10:35 PM
popa1980, for a Ghanaian your contributions are really meagre! Ghanaians are usually passionate about their country, at least those that I have met in my life so far.

Sometimes I can´t make head nor tail of you! But maybe you are just different...

popa1980
March 29th, 2008, 11:32 AM
Being passionate about a country does not mean being blind to its faults. As some people on SSC fail to realise.....

The colonials had a plan to totally revamp Accra- avenues, parks etc but Ghanas first government ditched the plan on independence. People still blame the Brits for not developing the city like Nairobi but we have been running the country for 50 years! Look at Abidjan.

The city is a mess, seriously, the road with the "Papaye" resturant that you can see is the premier shopping street in Ghana, I rest my case!

Matthias Offodile
March 29th, 2008, 11:59 PM
well, I had a look at colonial Accra while searching for older African pictures, my dear Mr Popa1980, and I couldn´t see any second Luanda, Maputo or Harare in the making, neither the British nor the French colonials leave any good cities behind in West or Central Africa with the sole exception of Dakar and cities of the former Belgian Congo , the rest of the cities almost all improved after colonization ended, what kind of tablets have you swallowed, please?

if you have another opinion, please prove it by means of visual material. The Accra pics during the colony era that I have seen weren´t even worth posting, the city had nothing to show, really...as opposed to present day Accra.

Matthias please read what I said before you open your mouth as spouting the usual immature babble. I said there was a PLAN to redevelop Accra in the and 50s but the plan was never carried out by Nkrumahs government. Read more carefully next time.

And yes, Accra was in a much better organised state pre-1957. My grandmother said you needed a licence for a dog, so there were no stray rabid dogs around, rubbish was collected and gutters were clean. There were less mosquitoes because there were less potholes for them to breed in. The town planning departmentwas functional and there was a ban on houses being built without the necessary amenities- whereas now people build million dollar houses and the waste just gets thrown out into the streets.

Matthias Offodile
March 30th, 2008, 08:05 PM
instead of claiming and claiming all the time, you seem to be unable to provide the visual material for us to SEE or any sort of information concerning this so-called grandiose Accra plan by the Brits...you could add it here or into the Africa Urabn thread from 1900-1980´s... Then we have the proof, at least!

"In the Fry/Treavallion plan (as it is known), a reorganization of the CBD was called for, as well as the development of the coastal region of the city. In order to reorganize the CBD, the planners decided to superimposed a tight grid north of Fort Ussher. To the east this newly organized CBD, the planners hoped to preserve a broad open space for a restaurant, country club, and polo and cricket fields. Additionally, the British planners wanted to build large numbers of public squares, fountains and ornamental pools and statues throughout the city, and build a vast Parliament Complex in downtown"

The plans are available to see but you would have to travel to the National Library in Accra. Some of us can back up everything we say, and yes feel free to add it onto the other thread :)

The difference between this link and propaganda show on VH1 is evident! Didn´t you once say that you are a doctor if I still remember...so you studied thoroughly, didn´t you?

Anyway, I have to leave now got something else to do, keep talking to yourself, if you are fine with it!

popa1980
April 2nd, 2008, 12:33 PM
Yeah, Im sure Vh1 bosses in California just decided to pick on a country in Africa which 99% of Mericans probably dont know exist. Thats likely!

And I stand corrected, apparently you can get more detailed plans of the 'Accra redevelopment' on the web but youhave to pay for the artcile which you may be prepared to do. I feel Accra may have gone beyond redemption now since town planning has been non existent recently any future developments eg- widening of roads will be evry difficulty. Watch new buildings spring up over othe next few years as the oil money trickles through though.

Yes a construction boom is currently going on in Accra. Both commercial and residential property developments are booming everywhere you look. The aiport city is going to be a new satellite business district of Accra with hotels, office towers and hopefully some retail properties to give it life.

Yes, i believe this is going to be a new economic node of Accra capable of offering 4-5 star hotels and true AA grade offices. Its biggest appeal is that it is close to the airport which cuts on traffic when one is flying in and out of Accra and also close to the high end residential areas from where most of the people who will work in this district resides. So again less traveling time and people can avoid much of the traffic you deal with when going to Accra. However, there are space constraints for this area due to its close proximity to the airport. Some developers are now spilling over into the nearby Airport Residential and knocking down houses to build high-rise apartment and office blocks to counter this problem. There are more than 10 high rise buildings either under construction or recently completed in this area.

I personally think the airport is too close to the city today and the government should consider its relocation in the next 10 years and free up all that space to private developers to expand Airport City.

Will the airport city development replace the CBD in terms of office space?

I think it will complement the CBD, it will just become an alternative although i do believe its going to become the preferred address. However it will be more expensive to rent than the CBD which means that only the rich companies are going to afford Airport City rentals.

I have heard much about Accra and seen a few pictures. Accra does not seem a modern city. A lot of the improvements have been within the old sectors, which is a very good thing. These day's the trend has been to develop satellite towns off the main city, in this case Accra. I have seen a few pictures of Airport City, but there does not seem to be a rapid expansion of this area. I may be wrong.

IMO, i think that accra should concetrate the building of new buildings to one common area so as to have a C.B.D a big city such as accra really needs a cbd bcoz then its one area that can me easily managed instead of a large area that makes it really hard to keep things well managed.

The public authorities in most African countries are not dealing with the issue of traffic congestion, crime and grime effectively and this results in developers fleeing the CBD in search of new locations. Solve access roads by building highways, keep the CBD clean and safe, then the developers will come. Also government must have faith in the CBD by investing in it themselves. Build new shiny office towers for the public servants and for the state owned companies, fix the pavements, fix the taxi ranks and markets, then the private sector will reciprocate this generously. Simple and straight forward.

you point out some very simple points that if implemented they would bare almost immediate fruits. for a country that is soon to become an african economic giant ghana needs some sort of a CBD like, abidjan or nairobi. but one thing that ghana is famous for is friendly people.

oh and btw, nairobi CBD is relatively clean but more needs to be done and they said that it have a metropolitant police dept just for the cbd alone by the end of this year, which is great news.

Car Dealership in Accra-just noting from observation that this one appears to be chinese, particularly from the Chery brand. The white sedan near the front is a Chery Oriental Son/Eastar/B6, and many of the other cars in there are old Citroen designs that Chery builds under license.

That's true, Ghana isn't that far ahead of Kenya from an economic standpoint, and Kenya ought to be able to match any Ghanaian standard. Here's hoping for a better future-maybe the new government will get its act together in order to speed up the recovery.

The Danish Fort of Accra: Christiansborg Castle or Osu castle, was the headquarters for Denmark commercial activities on the Gold Coast and it still bears the monogram of King Christian VII. The earliest constructions are from 1661.

What the Colonials built: To protect themselves.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b5/Christiansborg_Castle2.jpg

In 1850 the Castle was sold to Britain, along with all the other Danish forts and lodges. Today Christiansborg serves as the seat of government for the Republic of Ghana.

NOW... Since we (Ghana) gained independence in 1957 (apart from a short period in Nkrumah's time) this Fort has been our seat of power. Like the colonials our leaders have hid behind the thick walls and gates of this fort/Castle, isolating themselves from Ghanaians.

The current seat of power:

The gates of Osu Castle. Thou shall not enter!

You can look, but from far away...

UNTIL NOW! The new seat of power in Ghana is now moving to Flagstaff house.

The plan: Modern, new, shinning glass and reflective of the new aspiration of Ghana.

The actual development: Should be completed 4th Quarter this year.

kasapa who did the design for flagstaff house? and why is it called that?

Arzaranh, the design for Flagstaff house was done by an Indian company called Shapoorji Pallonji & Co. limited. They are also supervising the construction project with the aid of Ghanaian workers.

When the designs, costs and plans where first revealed there was an uproar in Ghana, mainly for point scoring by political parties and a suspicion that some corruption may have been involved in the awarding of the contract. Some people questioned why the design was been done by Indians. Questions were asked as to why a local Ghanaian architect was not used. Valid questions I guess, but whatever the reason the eventual design and impression of the project will be refreshing, stunning and modern in my view.

The original cost of the project was supposed to be approx. $40 million but that has nearly doubled leading to more cries of mislaid priority and corruption by the other political parties, though they have all stated that they will use Flagstaff House if they come to power too.

On the naming of the place, well the old flagstaff house was built by President Kwame Nkrumah and it was used by Nkrumah as his personal residence. I really do not know why Nkrumah's CPP named the place Flagstaff though.

When the current government decided to move from Osu Castle it only made sense to reuse this prime real-estate as the location of the new seat of power.
The project includes the President’s and vice president’s offices and residences and much more. In fact in order to accommodate all the elements in the complex and increase the land size, Accra Zoo was closed down and it will now be eventually relocated somewhere in Achimota forest.

Also, the original building (home) built for Nkrumah has been retained, renovated and incorporated to the overall plan as a Ghanaian heritage building.

Lighten your load... Splash the cash!

Yep, folks if you have a cool 250 to 500 thousand dollars to spend, why don't you buy one of the apartments in Villaggio?
There are a few left... Go on... you know you want to. ;):okay:

Villaggio is an ultra modern development from the same developers who developed the plush Trasacco valley estate.

http://www.villaggioghana.com/images/update_10_dec07_pano7.jpg

Currently nearing phase 1 completion, Villaggio is situated in Tetteh Quashie, Airport Residential Area.
It is opposite the Accra Mall, The African Regency Hotel and President Kuffuor personal residence.

interesting....
actually i think that the overall design leaves a lot to be desired, but at least it does try to reflect traditional culture and that is what i'm so pleased with.
