The land besides the Intercon is the new exhibition center to be opened by September 2007--maybe earlier.

I think it will be larger than the current one--but the current exhibition center will only be with us for 6 more months.

Exhibition centre to have new premises

Qatar International Exhibition Centre (QIEC) is likely to move to a brand new custom-built facility by the middle of next year.

The building, fast coming up on a 70,000sq m plot of land near Doha InterContinental, is expected to be ready by July 2007, said QIEC general manager Ahmed A M al-Nuaimi.

Barwa Real Estate Company is investing the required capital to build the new, state of the art facility, which is estimated to cost "QR70mn to QR100mn", the general manager said.

"We will be sharing everything according to an agreed formula", the official added.

The total built up area will be 25,000sq m of which 15,000sq m will be available for exhibitions. At the current facility, the exhibition area is only 10,000sq m.

At the new centre, there will be facilities for holding seminars, small meetings, offices, lobby, and VIP rooms.

There is also provision for having a cafÈ and a restaurant, working round the clock. The two outlets will not only serve the visitors and staff of the facility but those in the surrounding areas, al-Nuaimi said.

Outside catering too will be available.

The facility will also have ample parking among landscaped zones within the plot.

Asked if the exhibition centre is making a profit, the general manager said, "it will, in 2007, make a good profit".

The existing centre "will be demolished", al-Nuaimi said. He refused to divulge the future plans for the location but revealed that "a landmark will be erected here".

It was gathered that the plan was to put up a 102-floor building where the existing centre is located. However, this could not be confirmed.

That means, there will be 2 convention centers--one near the Intercon, and the other proposed with the tower in current place of the exhibition center???

I think it means that instead of the current centre there will be a supertall, while the new center will be built near the Intercontinental with its own supertall... I guess!

first dey will demolish the old building..same time they wil open the new one near the intercon.......den they wil construct the doha convention centre + barwa tower in west bay (same area)....and change the one near intercon to something else....or keep it as it is..........i think so this wil hapen :colgate:

They updated the exhibition center website, and what can i say, it looks cheap! I mean even my high school cafeteria rocked compared to the one there. And why do most people go there in purple or pink cars? lol!

^^ I saw the construction site!! it has the same render!!! The location is facing the Intercontinental! and let me tell you, construction is going really fast.. someone should take pics (maybe me soon)

The building looks cheap and looks temporary so I wouldnt be suprised if they removed it in the future. It doesnt look that big anyway. Maybe the overall color wont be yellow or the exterior work is differenet than the render.

Definitely temporary. ONce the new Expo center is built along with the 100 floor tower this will probably be demolished.

The New Exhibition Center opened yesterday with the Book Fair. The old exhibition center i think is now closed making way for Barwa Tower.

Cool! I passed by and the board clearly states 'interim exhibition center' :lol: It should be removed after a couple of years when the new new-one opens...

^^ no it shouldent ! it would be nice for example if there were to exhibitions at the same time :D know what i am saying ?
