Cameron Highlands is a highland region located about 20 km east of Ipoh and about 150km north of Kuala Lumpur in Pahang, Malaysia. At 5000 ft (1,500 m) above sea level it is the highest area on the mainland, and enjoys a cool climate, with temperatures no higher than 25°C and rarely falling below 10°C year round.

Key Attractions

Apart from the cool weather, key attractions in Cameron Highlands include a butterfly farm, strawberry farms, rose gardens, Chinese temple and vegetable farms. One of the popular tourist activities involves jungle walking and trekking amongst the refreshing cool forest air.

Travelling to the Cameron Highlands takes up to one and a half hours via a winding road from Tapah by car. There is a newer and easier route up from Simpang Pulai (closer to Ipoh) which has a wider road and gentler curves.

There are three towns in the Cameron Highlands, Brinchang, Ringlet and Tanah Rata.

How to go there

From North-South Expressway, exit the expressway at Tapah and then proceed via route 59 straight along the way to the highlands.

Alternatively, you can exit the expressway at Simpang Pulai, Ipoh and proceed via a new route 145 to Cameron Highlands along the way to the top.

Christmas in the Highlands

Cameron Highlands Resort surrounded by trees with twinkling lights

Sitting around a fire curled up as carollers warbled and the wind blew outside, even as the lights on the Christmas tree twinkling away invitingly may sound like a fairytale, or at the very least an expensive fantasy somewhere outside of tropical Malaysia.

Yet, this fantasy exists right here in our tropical paradise. More specifically, it is found in Cameron Highlands Resort, amidst a setting that seems to belong more in recent history than in our current urbanised lives. Drawing on Cameron Highlands' rich history and various colonial connections, the theme "Tales, Trails and Traditions" was an apt description of the entire experience.

Observing traditions older than its existence, Cameron Highlands Resort started off the festivities with a special "tree-lighting" ceremony, with none other than the sweet actress-celebrity Deanna Yusoff herself flicking the switch to mark the occasion.

This joyous event was attended by members of the press and specially invited guests as well as guests spending their holidays at the Resort. Those who have visited the Merlin Hotel in the past would be pleasantly surprised by the changes that had been undertaken by YTL Hotels & Properties after it acquired the hotel and transformed it into Cameron Highlands Resort, making it the third luxurious Malaysian resort under the YTL banner.

Cameron Highlands Resort retains the black and white colonial facade of the previous hotel, but upon stepping into the resort, you will experience a sense of being transported back in time to the days when the British and other Europeans made Cameron Highlands their retreat from the tropical heat. Contrary to rumours that Cameron Highlands has lost its cool air, the breeze was brisk and delightfully cool, even the skies remained clear for the tree-lighting ceremony, allowing the moonlight to shine through gently in the night.

President of YTL Hotels & Properties. Dato' Mark Yeoh explained the idea behind this year's theme was to take advantage of Cameron Highland's rich environmental diversity (Trails), the many stories about the mountains, especially about lost Thai silk magnate Jim Thompson (Tales), and the historical traditions of the highlands (Traditions). Inspired by this, they decided to start off the Cameron Highlands Christmas celebrations by having a special Christmas tree-lighting ceremony, much along the same lines as the events they have overseas, he said. Guest of honour, Deanna Yusoff said that the event reminded her of Christmases spent in Switzerland.

In fact, against the dark night sky, the trees twinkled in the moonlight with their electrical adornments; the pathway lit up like a route to a wonderful fairyland. The almost-full moon shone and made the scene slightly surreal; it was easy to mistake one being in a dream rather than being at the Cameron Highlands Resort in flesh. Many of the guests at the ceremony took a walk across the road to the nearby golf course for a view of the lights in all their glory in front of Cameron Highland Resort.

The night was still young, and the festivities had only just begun. Before dinner, carollers from the All Souls Church serenaded the guests in the elegant Jim Thompson tearoom with classics like "O Holy Night" and "Silent Night." Most guests were seen either mouthing the words to the songs or singing along softly. An old-style Christmas dinner followed, with everyone being seated at a long table that was lit with candles. Santa Claus made an appearance, giving out presents to the delighted children.

Deanna Yusoff then entertained everyone with several of her timeless songs like "Dream a Little Dream of Me." There was a very relaxed, almost romantic air at the Resort, and most were seen heading for their beds not long after the performances ended.

If you're looking for a quiet, serene place to spend your holidays, treat yourself and your loved ones to a tradtional celebration at Cameron Highlands Resort. You may also want to give the award-winning Spa Village a go while you're at it.

I've not been to the Camerons for ages (... decades really). Must find time to go there soon.

Anyone has pictures of the new access -- the Simpang Pulai-Pos Selim-Kg. Raja route?

New booster system to ensure water supply at Camerons
Sunday February 25, 2007
By HAH FOONG LIAN
TheStar

CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Water cuts during periods of high demand when tourists jam up this popular hill resort may be a thing of the past by next month.

This is because the new booster system at the Kuala Terlah water treatment plant here will begin operating to overcome the water supply shortage.

Pahang Water Supply Department director Datuk Ismail Mohd Noor said his department was aware of problems faced by residents living in high places at Tanah Rata and Brinchang here.

“Whenever there are too many people in Cameron Highlands, it can be a problem. But I am confident that the water shortage will be resolved by March with the commissioning of the booster system at the Kuala Terlah plant,” he said.

Ismail added that the department was keen to resolve the water woes here because it was Visit Malaysia 2007.

Greenhill Resort resident of seven years Khoo Kheng-Hor said he had been experiencing water supply disruption since Monday.

The author said the disruption had caused a lot of inconvenience and what was worse was that they were not informed when the supply would resume.

A hotelier who declined to be named said some of the guests hadchecked out earlier because there was no water supply.

“This is a perennial problem and it is not good for a place like this because this is a tourist destination.”

He added that it would help if there was more than one tanker to deliver water to those who needed it.

Wonder y a lot of authorities keep doing and upgrading the tourist spot during this Visit Malaysia year. All these should be done b4 2007, not during 2007. We must try our very best to give good impression during this peak tourism year, but not giving the tourist some troublesome, like shortage of water. (esp this year)

Tea as a tourist attraction

Talk time: Maznah (second from left) talking to Boh Plantation chairman
Tristan Russell while Caroline and Datuk Meriam Yaakob representing
Permoladan Nasional Berhad look on.

The home of the country’s favourite and leading tea brand, from Boh Plantations in Cameron Highlands, has been one of the main tourist attractions in Pahang.

It is learnt that more than 5,000 visitors per week, both locals and foreigners, spend their time having a taste of the uniqueness of the tea, and some make purchases for their consumption at home from the plantation.

Recently, the company officially opened its new Boh Tea Centre in Sungai Palas to provide tourists with a unique and comprehensive experience of the tea industry.

Pahang Tourism, Arts, Culture, Heritage, Women and Family Development Committee chairman Datuk Maznah Mazlan, who officiated at the ceremony, said the Boh Tea Centre was more than just a commercial entity as the plantation has helped in environment preservation.

Maznah said most visitors spend at least two hours at the centre while having their “tea break” and enjoying the greenery.

“It is a beautiful landscape where tea trees are grown on the hills in rows. It is such a wonderful sight,” she said after the launch of the centre recently.

http://www.thestar.com.my/archives/2007/3/23/southneast/se_06russell2.jpg

Modern method: Caroline explaining the
machinery used in processing the tea leaves.

The company’s chief executive officer Caroline Russell said the visitors participating in the conducted tours at the centre will gain first hand information of how tea is grown and processed to provide the “ummph” (the wonderful taste as advertised), that Boh is known for.

“The centre also boasts a 6.096m (20ft) overhanging platform which presents a spectacular view of the estate and this balcony is a favourite spot for visitors as they immerse themselves in the beauty of the surroundings while savouring one of Boh’s many types of tea,” Caroline said.

According to Caroline, the Boh Tea centre has received recognition for its design, and in 2006, the Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) has awarded the centre a honorary mention in the category of public and civic buildings for the building’s design quality supported by the surrounding environment.

Patience: A worker sifting tea leaves at the factory.

“The timely launch of the centre is in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and aims to complement the efforts and enhance tourism in Cameron Highlands.

“By launching the centre officially, I believe it will cater and contribute to the increasing flow of visitors to the highlands and our estate,” she said.

Boh Plantations is the largest tea-growing company in the country and owns four tea gardens in Fairlie, Bukit Cheeding, Boh and Sungai Palas, all in Cameron Highlands.

It started operations in 1929 and has been the tea pioneer and tea expert since then.

The plantation covers 1,200ha of tea gardens in highland and lowland areas and produces four million kilogrammes of tea annually, which translates to about 5.5 million cups of tea per day.

If you think the mountain air invigorating, try cycling along dirt trails in Cameron Highlands to truly feel energised

CYCLING 48km along a narrow, dirt road up in Cameron Highlands may not be everyone’s idea of fun at the country’s premier hill resort.

But it is a thrill for 12 members of XL Mountain Bike Club who first drove from Kuala Lumpur to Ringlet with their bicycles aboard. The bicycle trail starts at Habu, a few kilometres walk away.

Dubbed the “Heaven in Hell-Jim Thompson Trail” the endurance ride goes anti-clockwise from Habu to the Boh Tea Museum.

The nine-hour ride scales up (and down) the dirt road, passing through Orang Asli settlements, lines of tea bushes, vegetable and flower farms and dense secondary jungle.

There are no designated stops. The cyclists stop as and when they need to rest tired muscles or for a simple lunch of sandwiches, buns, power bars and chocolates — from their back-packs. Even water is brought along, in a three-litre camel bag.

After their first ride in January, the group went back for another expedition in February. This time they went clockwise along the same route, which proved to be even tougher.

An avid cyclist, photographer Roslin Mat Tahir joined the group to take the route less travelled.

The verdict? He is definitely hooked. The group can count on him to join them in their coming expeditions!
