The navy's probably going to shoot this down but this is the first development of this scale even thought of for our city so i'm still excited.

Wow! Any details on height or building uses...

Does the Navy have authority over the planning commision in VA Beach?

SHAZAM!
That looks very Dubai-ish.
I like it. You guys are very lucky. Cool designs for the towers too.

No official authority but those towers would be very near naval flight paths. We just barely kept Oceana as it is in the last round of BRAC so the council is very risk averse to doing anything that will upset the navy. No official height details but they did say the buildings would be the tallest in the state. The Westin is close to topping out now and will be 513ft high so to beat that with hotel floor heights we're looking at at least 50 stories.

I wonder why it isn't proposed next to the beach?

Because there is a 200ft height limit at the beach (again, because of the navy). This is probably the only location that's even remotely feasible, but still faces an uphill battle. Yes, that's right. The navy regularly f's up our game down here. Anyone who's ever visited and wondered why our oceanfront is so subpar, here's your reason. :ohno:

Looks like a VERY impressive vision. Hope you guys get to see this development delivered, without any objections. Keep us posted on the progress.

All of Hampton Roads is ripe for some tall buildings. All the different waterways in that area is just unbelievable. Views from every window in many places. They just need to develop a train system that crosses the James River.

I hope you get it, it will be a nice addition there. I've only driven through, never spent time in the area, but I might try to get to VA beach sometime soon :)

Well you asked for it so heres the details. It looks like the public and city may be more behind this than originally thought. I guess $4 billion dollars is $4 billion.

Like it or not, all agree $4 billion development is huge (http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=116493&ran=180696&tref=po)

A $4 billion proposal to build skyscrapers, hotels and condos at the Oceanfront and a massive golf resort near City Hall has left many business leaders and residents stunned.

Official renderings....

These projects would look good with the existing convention center:

Sweet buildings. Also, the addition of a TPC golf course will be great because they are consistently top knotch courses. I know I'd definately come down because I can play at those TPC courses for $12 which is definately reason enough to come down to VA Beach. Nice work Virginia...screw Navy flight paths.

Bal/Wash: I don't know anything about golf, but Business Week Magazine lists Richmond in the 14th slot among the 18 top golfing destinatioins in the Country. The Aspin/Vail area in Colorado headed the list.

Back to topic: The Virginia Beach $4 Billion deal would be awesome.

I think you mean nice work South Korea.

The military sucks, they should leave and let Hampton Roads concentrate on the things that matter, like billion dollar resort projects, embryo manufacturing/harvesting and messy automobile infrastructure.

Looks like this project may be part of some scam; which would be a shame if that is the case...

If the military were to leave Hampton Roads(no time soon), these projects would not be able to sustain the area's economy alone. The cost of all of these projects is probably what the military pumps into the local economy every year!!! Btw, I think the proposed Dome Site has the coolest design of them all.

The fat lady hasn't sung yet guys. It's been back and forth for days. The mayor has already come out and publicly stated that she will oppose the project so it's probably a moot point anyway.

South Korean firm is a winner in China (http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=117183&ran=241123)

The South Korean firm that proposed a $4 billion deal to reshape the city may have no reputation in the United States, but in the Far East, Sun Rise Development Co. Ltd. is well known.

There, Sun Rise Chairman Ju Young Kang is seen by some as a visionary, a man who gambled on mixed-use buildings before they were popular. He is lauded as one of the first Korean developers to penetrate China's booming market.

Two massive Sun Rise projects in northeast China have been so successful, in fact, that Kang was given honorary Chinese citizenship, The Korea Herald reported in 2005.

"The future is not for the people who wait," Kang told The Herald. "The future is for the people who pioneer and make it happen."

We should be thankful
That this company is looking at VB. I have travelled the developing world and cities of similar size in Brazil, India, Russia and Eastern Europe looking better and becoming more advanced than Virginia Beach. If there good enough for China they may be too good for us. New Chinese cities and buildings are state of the art and eco-friendly. I bought a house in Eastern Europe and the building standards were much better than anything in VB. In Eastern Europe many of the cities have free wifi internet access helping business people become more mobile, hence more productive. Lets move forward. Let these guys do their thing and show us something new. We should make it our goal to be a world class city with the best jobs, best resort and even try to get a top university to build a campus here etc.

Hopefully the attention from this South Korea company is giving to Va. Beach will attract those proposing/developing larger projects in the Middle East and China?

S. Korean developer eyes green card statute (http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=117283&ran=44673&tref=po)

The South Korean businessman who has proposed a $4 billion resort development hopes to use a little-known law to help his foreign investors gain permanent entry into the United States.

In correspondence with the city, the leader of Sun Rise Development Co. Ltd., Ju Young Kang, has stressed that obtaining green cards is an important aspect of his proposal, and he has asked for the city's support.

"Because secure acquisition of Green Card is an essential subject, I want to get assured that City would take complete charge of the Green Card affair," Kang wrote Nov. 23, 2006.

In a Dec. 15 e-mail, Kang wrote to the city that Sun Rise plans to set up a $1 million investment standard for acquiring green cards.

This project died an ugly death a long time ago. The developer, Sunrise, pulled out citing differences with the city. A lot of cultural misunderstandings, and a very headstrong economic developer contributed to this loss. The project is deader than a doornail now.
