A very nice collection! I gotta say the first few pics looked a lot like Japan, especially the double decker highway and the way to hot springs. But rest of the picture has its distinct character which sets Taiwan apart from its neighbors.

I just discovered that I have ever taken a picture right at the same positin as you are in picture #91. Haha.
Maybe we've seen each other in some places before...

Taipei Walker, this is my very first post at skyscrapercity. I got to tell you that
this is a truly amazing collection!

Interestingly (or should I say sadly?), I found many westerners when they take pictures of Taipei (or Taiwan), they focus on the ugly side, such as chaotic traffic, dirty sidewalks, messy buildings...etc, which fit they impression (or stereotype?) of an asian country. On the other hand, when local people take photos of Taipei, they tend to only look at the beautiful side: high raising buildings, clean & modern areas, colorful night scenes..etc, which, in my opinion, is kind of show-off.

But I found your photos represent a nice balance between all aspects of Taipei and I enjoy than very much. Please keep posting!

after having viewed your pics, i must confess that i didn't recognize the taipei that you try to recount with your pics. there are so many areas of this city that i've never visited...at my next stay, i'll try not to spend too many time in the same quarters.

good range of photos. would be nice to see more of the iconic landmarks such as the 101 and the bridges that connect to other cities.

Taiwan/ROC IS an independent country, but as far as Taiwanese ALL supporting TI, I'd say speak for yourself, "buddy". All surveys I've seen reflect the fact that most Taiwanese are happy with the status quo. :nuts:

Taiwan/ROC IS an independent country, but as far as Taiwanese ALL supporting TI, I'd say speak for yourself, "buddy". All surveys I've seen reflect the fact that most Taiwanese are happy with the status quo. :nuts:

Taiwanese automatically assuming all white people to be "American" is no different than Americans automatically assuming all East/Southeast Asians to be "Chinese" or all Latinos to be "Mexican". :)

This kind of thing happens all over the world.

However, technically there is more of a merit for Taiwanese to assume all white people are Americans because Caucasian-Americans tend to have a large variation of European origin. There are Caucasian-Americans whose ancestors who were from Spain to Russia, England to Italy and many are mixed. I'm not saying it's right to assume all white people are Americans but considering the fact above, there is a good chance that a white person would be American.

It's the same with assuming all Latinos are Mexicans as majority of Latinos in the U.S. ARE Mexicans. However, I don't believe majority of East/Southeast Asians in the U.S. are Chinese. There is a great number of Filipino, Vietnamese and in some areas Korean population.

Maybe it's the "original" English but to say it's real is misleading as if other variations are somehow "fake" :P

That's natural though.

Just look at the different Chinese dialects. They've developed more or less independently over thousands of years which resulted in them being mostly mutually unintelligible (although in this case, writing system didn't change much).

However, the variations between the different English dialects are developing much slower than dialects of other languages because in our modern world, with instant communication and mass media, it allows a more uniformed development of languages.

Hi people :) This is my first post in this Taiwan forum.

First at all ...CONGRATULATIONS for that marvellous pics. I'm very interested in Taiwan and other areas in South East Asia and Far East and those photos are a very good way to see how Taipei is.

I'd like make some remarks to Pangu as I find very interesting his point of view

This kind of thing happens all over the world. It also depends about your level of education and culture.

It's the same with assuming all Latinos are Mexicans as majority of Latinos in the U.S. ARE Mexicans.

There are mexicans who are white people, but they are a minority. Most people in Mexico are a mix Spaniard/European with american native.

By the way, I don't like the way who many "americans" from United States tell by themselves America instead saying "USA".

USA is a country and "America" is a whole continent. Can you imagine germans calling Germany "Europe" or "United Landers of Europe"?

I am 31 y/o, born in Poland, been living in Taiwan for more than 6 years, originally came to Taiwan to study Chinese, I had been studing Mandarin at Shida for 3 years, after that I found the company I work now, it is a chemical company involved in trading and production, I am working in trading division (export). Except for trading I am also part of new investment team - my company decided to invest in Poland (so far they invested heavily in China and now wants to diversify) so recently I've been often travling between Taiwan and Poland. Right now I am in Poland (in Szczecin which is close to Berlin, intresting thing is that while I am here the border between Germany and Poland disappeared, since Dec. 21 we became part of Schengen agreement, going to Berlin is like going to just another city), I'll be back to Taiwan in mid January.

Working in a company means that I have free weekends, that's a lot of time to explore Taipei/Taiwan. Besides, Taiwan is so photogenic, I can take hundreds of photos a single day! The photos you see here are just small part of thousands of photos I have so you can expect more in the future, depending on my free time. This week I got ill and had to stay home (I am already used to Taiwan's weather, it is so cold here, hehe) so I was able to upload some of them.

yes, taipei city streets're pretty clean for years, not only in so-called business or uptown areas. myself, i was surprised by this fact when i get back to taipei for the first time, because taipei that i leaved used rather to be a garbage spreaded place.

I guess I started to feel like home in Taiwan. I am in Poland now but I miss Taiwan very much, if I could I would love to settle down there. Of course when I am in Taiwan I miss Poland, especially Polish food, my family, relatives, friends etc. And I can complain a lot about Taiwan (nobody's perfect), you'd better not to hear it, we already had "the complain thread" by stylinexpat :D

Is this Ximen Market?
Last time I was there, it was pretty dead, but it was like 2 3 years ago.
Was there some kind of activity that day? or Is that because some new stores/cafe that draw in more ppl?

Mr. Baoz was ok, a lot different types of 包子.

Ximen Market (on this side) turns into big party every weekend. The area was pretty dead even a year or so ago. Later, first bars and cafes for gays opened and within a few months period it became the most famous gay place in Taipei.

At this moment they closed parts of the roads around the terminal 1. Also the construction of MRT station is on full swing. Along the way you can also see large area of construction around the museum - I guess there will be another MRT station there, hotel and China Airlines building.

You know, after spending 20 hours at the airports and in the planes I really was not in the mood of taking photos, hehe.

The fate of many historical buildings, but this one is lucky.
Many of these kinds of buildings survived from the WWII and modenlization of Taipei, but were burnt down in the past 10 20 years! because they are on the valuable lands, which worth millions and millions of dollars.

people on skyscrapers.cn have suggested the construction around T1 is that of the airport MRT. they have not heard anything about the T1 renovation having started. sure is depressing to hear this. hopefully they r wrong.

they havent started airport mrt construction yet because they haven't even completed the financing of the project.

I don't know about financing airport MRT, but I can confirm they have started work on this MRT line already. On one side of T1 you can see large closed area with rendering of MRT station and the work is proceeding. Anyway, from other 2 sides of T1, quite far away from MRT station area, they closed another areas with different type of fence - that's why I thought the renovation of T1 has started. There was not any information there though, so I may be wrong.

I have been to the zoo once with my school when I was really young. Actually, my old Taipei Zoo photos were mostly taken from the old zoo in Yuanshan. Yuanshan is in city centre. Imagine if some tigers or lions escaped from the zoo...

Taipei zoo(mazha) looks nicer than I thought from those photos. The zoo is beside a hill side. Maybe there is still room for expension?

I remember when I was young my parents and uncle were gonna take me there. When we were outside I kept on putting on my hand on the stone wall. And when we were about to enter my hands like started bleeding so we never ended up going haha.
