A budget equivalent of 200,000 US dollar has been considered for the establishment of the biggest site museum of Iran which will include archeology, anthropology, and natural sections in Gohar Tepe, Iran’s northern Mazandaran province.

Announcing this news, Ali Mahforouzi, archeologist and director of Gohar Tepe Archeology Center, said: “We started negotiations with some designers and one of them has been chosen to execute the project of Gohar Tepe site museum which will consist of cultural, historical and tourism sections. This 50-hectare museum and tourism complex will include archeology and anthropology museum of Gohar Tepe, natural and ecosystem museum of Mazandaran province and cave museums of Hoto, Gomishan, and Kamarband caves. A 20x15 kilometer area will also be allocated for setting up tourist camps in the area.”

According to Mahforouzi, considering the historical background of Gohar Tepe and the enormous historical evidence discovered so far in the area, establishment of this site museum would be very important in introducing the historic site of Gohar Tepe and attracting tourists to the area and familiarize them with one of the most ancient civilizations which existed in northern Iran.

Regarding the particular design which will be implemented in construction of this museum, Mahforouzi explained: “We have tried to design the museum according to some of the world’s most famous site museums, especially France’s Alsace Site Museum.”

According to Mahforouzi, the moulage of some of the valuable historical relics unearthed in Gohar Tepe historical site will also be made to be exhibited in the place they were found.

“In addition to archeological relics unearthed so far in this historical site, the anthropology of the region will be displayed in this museum as well. Currently a team of anthropologists is carrying out researches in the region and has succeeded in identifying 11 different ethnic groups so far including Kurds, Lors, Afghans, Georgian, nomads, Turks, and folk Mazandarani tribes. Moreover, due to its geographical situation, the province enjoys high potentials in attracting tourists and therefore, establishment of this site museum will be very important,” added Mahforouzi.

According to Mahforouzi, 1400 meters of this site museum have already been established during the first phase of the project and is ready to host tourists while experts work on the rest of the museum.

Gohar Tepe historical site is located in eastern parts of Mazandaran province between the cities of Neka and Behshahr, north of Iran. Evidence shows that from 7000 years ago to the first millenniums BC, large numbers of people lived in the region, enjoying an urban life since 3000 BC. Architectural structures and graves found in this region are evidence of continual life during the later centuries at this ancient site.
