Al Rajhi Tower in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is a new $480 million USD tower announced May 13, 2006. Plans have been hatched for what is set to become the tallest building in Saudi Arabia. Designs for the sail-shaped tower have been drawn up by architects at Atkins.

Although its height is yet to be disclosed, Fahmy Roauf, engineering department manager at Al Rajhi Bank’s real estate investment unit confirmed that it would be “the tallest tower yet in Saudi Arabia” and will be built in Riyadh.

“The tower is being built on behalf of the Al Rajhi family and will be used for commercial purposes,” he said.

Plans have also been approved for the construction of a new tower to accommodate the Al Rajhi Bank’s headquarters in Riyadh, designs for which have been drawn by Skidmore Owings & Merrill, the architects behind the Burj Dubai.

Same architect as Burj al Arab?

The tower itself is really nice, but I thought this project was going to be built in Pakistan?

Nope. Got this from the Saudi Board. In the third picture you should see by the two other towers that it's indeed Ryaad.

I see it's Ryad indeed, but I'm pretty sure I saw this project already somewhere else in the Middle Eastern region, I thought it was Pakistan:)

The second picture is erroneous - that is of the Centaurus complex being built in Islamabad (Pakistan). The other ones show the Riyadh building. Riyadh has some very nice highrises - if they built them as a cluster instead of isolated monoliths then they would look more impressive...I guess that will happen over time though as more are built.

You sound cynical. Afghanistan and Iran are included in the middle Eastern region, according to what we learn here at school. I thought Pakistan was included too, if it's not, than it's really a shame I made that fault, don't you think so?;)

Yes, tanzirian is right! Both have been designed by Atkins and hence the similarity. The one in Islamabad (Pakistan) is known as Centaurus while the one in Riyadh is Al-Rajhi Tower.

True that Pakistan is not in Middle East but almost all the corporations treat Pakistan as part of the ME (or MENA) region. And that could be the reason for the mistake.

For me, it's a non-issue.

You're probably confusing it with the one being constructed in Islamabad, Pakistan by the name Centaurus. That one does resemble this one, after all they're both designed by the same architect: Atkins.

im sure that the second pic in the first post is of a proposed structure in Pakistan.
other than that, the helipad and what appears to be a viewing gallery / restaurent looks very similar to the burj. could have come up with something a little more original.

The second picture is erroneous - that is of the Centaurus complex being built in Islamabad (Pakistan).

Good catch! While the buildings are somewhat similar, the street level is much different, and there is more overall development in the Islamabad project. It seems that in Riyadh, they purposely limit other development around buildings to a particular effect.

Looks a pinch like Montreal's Olympic Tower (on Olympic Stadium)
http://www.travelplaces.co.uk/images/renault_pages/montreal-olympic-stadium.jpg

The Riyadh project seems to be taking a LOT of inspiration from the Burj al Arab, however, I don't think it succeeds as well. The Burj al Arab took inspiration from the ocean and sailing boats, utilizing its context. This one is more edgy and sharp - wanting to cut through its context.
