Nice building., nice concept...adds traditional flourish without being tacky. Personally I think the older version looked nicer. What will the top be built from? Metal made to look like ceramic? Or tilework on metal?
Landing a helicopter between those pillars could be tricky.

If this building has 82 floors, no way it is just 320 meters tall. Maybe it has 52 floors and the numeber 82 is just a typo.

I really like the arabic style of this building. Architects should really pay attention to the countries'/regions' original architecture more often than designing buildings that could be build everywhere.

i count only 65 floors if the top part is only non habitable roof feature.. this also sounds more realistic if the height to the tip is only 320m

I just had a 'euphoric' event. I reckon that two of these towers adjacent to each other with the roof appearing as two arches would be marvelous IMO!!!!

Gate of Kuwait Tower
August 2007

Owner: Al Shaya Group
Budget: Estimated $172 million
Scope of work: The project calls for the design and construction of a 79-storey mixed-use tower in Al Sour Street. The first three levels will offer parking space for 1,600 cars. The next 10 floors will be a five-star hotel and the remaining floors will be offices with business facilities including conference halls. The project will have a built-up area of 127,000 sq m and will provide 5,000 sq m of retail space.
Status: Sources indicate that the client is in the final stage of design work. Tender documents for the main contract will probably be issued in September. Construction work will take four years to complete.

I must say that this building looks bland, uninspiring, usual, and ordinary. That is, until the magnificent arch. It is perhaps the only feature to redeem this skyscraper. It is a sad day when these architects and engineers, who get well paid, can't find a more creative design for the crown jewel of Kuwait.

I must say its a new twist in the "hole on top" design concept.

Myster E

either the people are 20 metres tall or that building doesn't look 320m. It's a stunning design though.

:( looks like my grandma on the crapperOh dear! Couldn't imagine.

If it goes ahead, this is one of those towers that could either look great or really, really baaaad IMO. The cladding and finishes would have to be top notch otherwise it will look like a terrible joke.

i like the idea to build something that looks like a huge islamic relic where you can live (or work or whatever) in.
and i think they've made a beautiful design out of that idea.

Thamerium

As I remember, the actual construction has not started yet... They are preparing the site for that... It seems it took a long time to start building this tower...
We need to have an update from the tower site...
When it will be finished? Well, If they start this year (2008), they are prapably need three years to finish it... Let's say, it may be done by 2011... That's my guess!

updates.

new renderings for the tower have been released, revealing a new take on the "gate" concept. the tower design has changed to a more modern structure clad entirely in blue glass with steel panels on the side, the void at the top is smaller and the Islamic designs surrounding it have been removed. it looks more international and cosmopolitan than the former concept [which i thought was uninspiring/borderline tacky, save for the gate at the top]. a Four Seasons logo is also seen at the top, so it seems that this tower will house the luxury brand's property in the city.

the architect's website set the tower's completion date for 2011, with the height increased to 330 meters. details and renderings will be attached below.

enjoy.

X-posting updates from the Kuwait sub-forum:
Here's a bit of information to clear things up:
- The supertall Gate concept is NOT going through
- The final, approved concept has been designed by Gensler, the same architects behind The Avenues
- The final concept will consist of two towers: one will serve as the Alshaya headquarters and will be up to a maximum of 42 stories while the other will be the Four Seasons Hotel at 20-25 stories
- The towers will be positioned longitudinally along the site, with the headquarters tower next to Burj Jassim and the Four Seasons on the other end of the site
- The towers will be joined by a four-story retail podium with an open plaza at the front
- The design is very clean and simple; both towers will be solid rectangular blocks with a mix of dark and light glass, but will have setbacks and openings at the top of each
- There will be a metal skin on two sides of each building and they will weave through each other in layers to create a unique visual effect

Construction on the complex is due to begin by the end of this year with completion anticipated by early to mid 2015. The parking facility has already been built and should already have power and plumbing supplied to it.

Source: I used to work with Alshaya and have access to two renderings of the final buildings, but I don't think I can't show them until they are formally announced to the public. I'll see what I can do to get them out here before.

(1) Does this project (Gate of Kuwait Tower) still contain a super-tall?
(2) Has the construction work started?
