hannukah is a jewish commemoration of an ancient conquest of jerusalem. when the jews took jerusalem they only had enough oil to light the temple for one night but the oil managed to last eight days miraculously. hence, the lighting of the 8 candles to represent every night the oil was lit "miraculously"...

Is it not official holiday like Lebanon, Syria & Jordan??

how can it be official holiday, theres 3 different christian communities each with its own day of christmas? a lot celebrate it in the start of january! (eastern christmas)
so each community has its official holiday at the day they celebrate it, its like in jordan - semi-official - schools can close, and so on, for those who celebrate it.

No, there are only two Christmas days which apply to all Christian groups i.e 25 Dec & 7 Jan. How about the New Year (Jan 1) Is it official holiday??

no its not, the jewish new year is rosh hashana.
but theres great new year (we call it sylvester) parties!! :)

On Friday night, Sept. 22, 2006, Jews began celebrating one of their most important religious holidays, Rosh Hashanah. It remembers the creation of the world. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means the "head of the year." It is also called the Feast of the Trumpets. The blowing of a ram's horn, a shofar, proclaims Rosh Hashanah, and summons Jews to religious services. Sundown Sept. 22 marks the beginning of the year 5767 and the month of Tishrei.

so we are not in 2007, we are in 5767 :)
