View Full Version : Rajshahi - Cityscapes and Landmarks
Tmac December 27th, 2006, 11:46 PM Rajshahi also known as the Silk City is situated on the northern bank of the lower stream of the Ganges, known as the Padma. Like many other towns and cities located on the riverbanks, Rajshahi depended heavily on the Padma for its growth and development. In other words, the Padma greatly influenced the socio-economic conditions of the people of Rajshahi.
The areas, which comprised the greater district of Rajshahi, were inhabited preponderantly by the Hindus. The Muslim saints or Sufis, as they were called, who first arrived in this area promoted education and culture among the local people. They also provided food and shelter to the hungry and distressed, and elevated the morals of the people by their piety and exemplary character. The most distinguished of all these sufis was Shah Makhdum Abdul Quddus Jamal-al-Din Rupash. He arrived in Bagha in 1288 A.D. from Baghdad. Later, he came to the Rajshahi town. He passed away in 1325 A.D. on the present site of Dargahpara on the bank of the Padma. The dargah or shrine of the great saint, which attracted a large number of devotees, contributed to the growth of Muslim population in the area.
Rajshahi also enjoyed an advantage due to its being located on the bank of a large navigable river, the Padma. It emerged as a commercial centre, particularly for silk trade. In the absence of any recognised land route, the bulk of the trade was carried through the Padma. A large quantity of silk and silk fabrics was exported to the various parts of the Mughal Empire, to the neighbouring countries and to Europe. Rajshahi also became a prominent trading centre after the advent of the Europeans in the seventeenth century. The first Europeans to arrive here were the Dutch. Their silk factory located in the Barakuthi still stands on the riverbank as an important landmark. The Dutch were followed by the French and the English.
Sericulture was an agricultural home industry. The cultivators grew mulberry trees and reared silk worms in their houses on the mulberry leaves. Men, women and children were engaged in the rearing of the worms, winding, weaving and dying the silk. The mulberry tree thrives in the hard sticky soil in the Barind area and was therefore mostly cultivated in the district of Rajshahi, in the southern part of Dinajpur and Rangpur, in Murshidabad and its reighbouring areas. With the increasing commercial activities of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, cultivation of mulberry crops increased, thus contributing to abundantly productive silk industry. Following the incidents of the mid-eighteenth century, when the Marathas committed the most horrid devastation and cruelties and fed their horses and cattle with mulberry plantation in western Bengal, the Directors of the East India Company took some precautionary measures. They arranged for those people engaged in the silk industry to migrate to the other side of the Padma for in case Marathas or others should ever raid Bengal, they would not be able to cross the great river to destroy the mulberry plantation or disperse the winders of raw silk.
Undoubtedly, this measure contributed considerably to the prominence of Rajshahi as a major silk producing centre.
It was not the persons engaged in silk industry who alone migrated to Rajshahi. Common people of Murshidabad and its adjoining areas, scared of the Maratha atrocities during the middle of the 18th century, also crossed the river and settled in Rajshahi. Such influx of large number of people contributed to the growth of the population in the locality.
In any case, it was the silk industry, which brought fame and fortune for the people of Rajshahi. But with the British East India Company’s occupation of Bengal in the middle of the eighteenth century and the Company's commercial policy together with the invention of machines led to the gradual decline of the silk industry of Rajshahi.
The shifting of the district headquarters from Natore to Rajshahi in 1825 gave a new impetus to the growth of the town, which also served later as the headquarters of the divisional administration. Since then most of the government offices and residences of high officials of the district are located on the bank of the river.
Among other most important institutions and buildings located on the bank of the Padma are Circuit House, Collectorate, Court House, Rajshahi Collegiate School, Rajshahi Government College, Varendra Research Museum, Rajshahi Madrassah, Rajshahi Radio station, Motel and Rajshahi Central Jail etc. The Central Jail was constructed in the middle of the 19th century. Apart from holding the prisoners, the jail, at its early stage, had another important role to play in the town life of the people. The European residents in Rajshahi had to depend on the Jail for the drinking water, which would be sold to them at an anna per bucket or tin. The same water was used by the prisoners. It was obtained from the river Padma and brought inside the Jail through pipe. Later, in order to avoid difficulty and expense the Public Works Department had arranged an independent and reliable water supply by sinking well inside the Jail.

tanzirian February 28th, 2007, 05:28 AM Established in 1910, Varendra Research Museum is the oldest museum in Bangladesh. It was established when local zamindars donated their collections, most notably Kumar Sharat Kumar Ray. In 1923 the museum became part of Rajshahi University. The largest part of the collection is pre-Islamic sculpture from archaeological sites in Bangladesh. However, there is also an impressive collection of artifacts from the Indus Valley civilization in Pakistan and stone calligraphy from the Muslim period. More recently a collection of artwork from local tribal peoples has been added. The museum also owns a collection of 22,000 books and 6,000 Bengali, Sanskrit, Arabic, and Persian manuscripts.

No new, land or business taxes
SM Humayun Kabir . Rajshahi -Metro Daily Newspaper
The Rajshahi mayor, Mizanur Rahman Minu, placed on Wednesday Tk 221.57 crore proposed budget for the financial year 2006–07, provisioning for no additional taxes.
The income and expenditure were shown equal in the proposed budget, involving Tk 221,56,83,128, which is about Tk 3.5 crore higher than the figure of the budget for the financial year 2005-2006.
Against the budget of Tk 218.98 crore of the past financial year, the corporation could earn Tk 92.88 crore, which is the highest figure in the history of the corporation, said the mayor at a briefing in the RCC conference room.
The mayor said the owners of thatched houses and freedom fighters living in the corporation area would exempted from holding taxes as was the case in the past financial year.
The mayor proposed some new development schemes that are under consideration of the government for implementation. The programmes are the supply of natural gas to Rajshahi through pipelines, establishment of a digital city, an IT village, and agro-based EPZ, reopening of factories to employ educated young people and modernisation of the Rajshahi Parjatan Motel.
The schemes also include establishment of a textile engineering college, leather engineering college, residential English model college, North Rajshahi Irrigation Project, construction of footbridges at the RDA Market, level crossing, Zero Point, Mono Square and near the railway station.
The schemes also plan three modern abattoirs, establishment of a dental college, rehabilitation of landless people and the establishment of a 30MW power plant.
The mayor, in his speech, also mentioned some of the ongoing programmes such as the construction of the second jute mills at Kantakhali, initiation of e-governance, establishment of Dainik Barta Complex, second phase of the water supply and drainage project, widening city roads, 100-bed diabetic hospital, five bridges including the one on the River Barnai and construction of some residential buildings at some educational institutions.
The listed some project that have been completed. They are the construction of city corporation building, upgrade of BIT to RUET, incinerator at RMCH for clinical waste management, Shilpakala Academy auditorium, Shaheed Zia Children’s Park, renovation of 17 graveyards, education board building, railway building, district administration building, the first phase of drainage programme, construction of city bypass, women’s polytechnic institution, modern telecommunications system, some police boxes, construction of new court building and installation of supply water lines.
Hinting at his not running for the next mayoral election, he said, ‘It is my last announcement of the corporation budget.’
He said the corporation failed to collect enough holding and other taxes in the past financial year. He said the corporation would be recruiting several hundred people on a daily basis to provide better service. The corporation has increased the wages of its daily labourers by Tk 5 a day and the closed Rajshahi Sericulture Factory will be reopened on a ‘no work, no pay’ basis, he said.
The briefing was attended by corporation’s chief executive officer Korban Ali, finance committee chairman ward commissioner Mustak Ahmed Ratan, committee’s vice-chairman ward commissioner Abdul Hamid Tekon, chief revenue officer Abdus Salam, budget-cum-accounts officer Lutfor Rahman and ward commissioners.

tanzirian November 29th, 2007, 11:55 PM ^^ Interior of this station is very nice...first time I have seen pics...thanks Tmac. In fact Bangladesh has at least three nice modern railway stations - this, Dhaka, and Sylhet. Kamalapur interior is also nice but having been built at a time when were quite poor, doesn't have as nice materials...in this respect Rajshahi wins out. I think I've been to Sylhet railway station but was a kid back then and have no real memories of it.

clearsky November 30th, 2007, 05:57 AM A glossy floor would have made the station a world class infrastructure.
tanzirian November 30th, 2007, 06:48 PM ^^ Train is a great way to see BD. Here in the USA, trains generally run between two rows of trees (at least in the east), so a ride is extremely monotonous. In BD you can watch the scenery / rural life plus first class is not very expensive for people with good jobs. Also more practical given small land area. Long term some consideration should be given to tourism potential of rail and maybe have some trains or train cars dedicated to this.

Mahratta December 17th, 2007, 01:19 AM Pardon my ignorance, but is there any story as to why Rajshahi is called 'Silk City'?
This city looks great by the way.

People more knowledgeable please correct me but, isn't it because Rajshahi used to be (or still is) the place where natural silk (as in the silkworm) is made? In Bangladesh it is known as Rajshahi silk, not as refined as Chinese or Japanese silk but very good.

Very simple......
Rajshahi is where Bangladeshi silk comes from. Rajshahi is also famous for mango and lichi.

iamgr8 January 22nd, 2012, 10:50 PM Taka 400cr projects in Rajshahi
RAJSHAHI, Jan 20: Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has been implementing six development projects of Taka 400 crore with the main thrust of enhancing civic facilities, reports BSS.
Of those, implementation of the Taka 51.78 crore Fire Brigade crossing to city bypass connecting road has been completed connecting the people of northern part of the city along with various important establishments including Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman Divisional Stadium and Divisional Women Sports Complex with the main part.
According to the officials concerned, implementation of another project of Taka 52.34 crore for various infrastructural developments like drainage and water supply is at the final stage.
For uplifting the city's backward and underprivileged wards, a project of 78.82 crore has been adopted and its implementation work is going to be started very soon. Vertical extension of the City Bhaban will be done at a cost of Taka 16.72 crore.
A midtown road from Upashahar to Sagarpara crossing via Malopara will be widened and developed at a cost of Taka 72.16 lakh.
A Taka 122.91 crore project has been adopted for constructing a road from Paba area to Choddopaya area including a flyover on the road.
Procurement of essential machineries for improvement and maintenance of roads has been completed by spending Taka 23.60 crore. Besides, construction of roads and drainage, street lighting and beautification under various other projects including BMDF, lump grant and other schemes are progressing fast.
Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman Central Park and Zoo is being modernized and renovated with involvement of around Taka 14 crore.
Besides, the corporation is going to construct 15 multi- storied commercial buildings including a clinic under public private partnership system. Of those, construction of three buildings is progressing.
On the other hand, some other uplift projects are in the pipeline.
Meanwhile, Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton told BSS that the city corporation is committed to implementing its uplift programmes in a transparent and accountable manner.
"We have no compromise with the work standard of uplift programmes," he further said.
Mayor Liton said standard of all the uplift works of the city corporation is being monitored and controlled strictly and asserted that the officials and others concerned who would be found guilty of any corruption and irregularity will not go unpunished.
"Around three years back, we had received a fund-less, corrupted city corporation, civic services had been dismantled due to politicisation and corruption and 80 percent of the development works were plundered," he alleged.
After taking the responsibility, he said the present council has established a transparent and pro-people administration in the City Bhaban together with making it accessible to the public in general.
Besides, he listed various need-oriented uplift programmes and said the city corporation has adopted a 50-year plan besides the vision-2018 for planned development of the metropolis.
Upon successful implementation of the ongoing projects by next one to three years, a qualitative change will be attained.
