View Full Version : Anchorage - USA

Anchorage- my place of birth, the only place in Alaska of any size whatsoever. Most people think alaska is all eskimos and Inuits and stuff hopefully these pics will prove them wrong. (When i lived in Alaksa I didint know 1 native) The Mountain Backdrop is very beutiful and you can see Moose and Wolves roaming downtown on a daily basis. most of the buildings have names of oil companies on them though....

Anchorage has 2 sets of buildings this one -

De Snor June 1st, 2003, 10:52 PM Rather boxy , the last pic looks very nice tough & the landscape is much more fascinating !
mthq June 10th, 2003, 11:27 PM the skyline doesn't look bad at all for a small Alaskan city founded in 1915!
I give it a 9 for its small size but not bad skyline.
DubbaG June 11th, 2003, 03:23 AM I am very impressed with this skyline considering the location.
But still not much to look at. 5.5
tocoto June 11th, 2003, 03:55 AM The natural setting is wonderful. It's abit of a stretch to say that there is a skyline in those pix at all. The skylines of many suburbs and edge cities are far more impresive. 1/10
BG918 June 11th, 2003, 06:55 AM For an isolated Alaskan city so far away, it's a pretty good skyline. I would actually expect to see more buildings considering all the energy companies doing business in Anchorage, maybe they can't build tall because of the earthquake danger?
I've been in the downtown area and it's fairly lively. I can see more Seattle-like high and low rise condos being built in the future enhancing the skyline. The setting is one of America's best. 8/10
Evergrey June 12th, 2003, 12:21 AM 3/10
Unparalelled natural beauty and a unique location... not a terribly large city... but the skyline is still quite boring, short and uninspiring.
fox1 July 1st, 2003, 06:38 AM it's tough to compare with those mountains. i look forward to watching anchorage grow and i like the place. 4
Fabio July 31st, 2003, 09:39 PM 6/10
for an isolated city and its size
ParraMan January 12th, 2004, 02:59 AM Can't see any images, but from what I remember of Anchorage, it reminds me of Darwin Australia, not many highrises, but still looks pretty cool. I won't score it yet though until I take another look at pics from somewhere.
SeeMacau May 22nd, 2004, 02:59 PM Cannot see the pics ...
JTS LOU July 14th, 2004, 10:46 PM I dont like the skyline very much but for its size 270,000 its ok and to be isolated area in Alaska its OK 4.5 I think it should do something like Des Moines, IA
hauntedheadnc January 23rd, 2005, 11:08 PM There's not a great deal there, but what is there works well together and works well in the natural setting. Not bad at all, especially when you consider how the city was nearly flattened by the Good Friday Earthquake back in the 60's.

Zaqattaq January 23rd, 2005, 11:28 PM 9/10!!!!!
Nick in Atlanta January 24th, 2005, 04:45 AM 7/10 I've seen pics of Downtown Anchorage before, in fact I think some where used here. I like the pic of Downtown over the park. Anchorage is actually a fairly important city, but its small population make it easily overlooked.
MIMICA January 24th, 2005, 06:00 AM i was really suprised by the skyline of anchorage. i really never thought of the city to be so interesting, i just thought it was a place where old people, and animals lived. i suppose that i was wrong, and that is a fairly modern city.
i hope to see more for the skyline later on in the future.
8/10 :)
THT90 January 24th, 2005, 06:08 AM it is a very impressive skyline, and i hope more buildings get added in it, to make it look even better.
9/10 :)
Blahb January 24th, 2005, 08:09 PM 8/10.
One of the best skylines in America. 9/10 for natural beauty.
MuddyZehbra32 January 29th, 2005, 08:11 PM I have some more pics here...I want to get a summer home and live here in the summer when I get older....it gets misebly cold in the winter...

MuddyZehbra32 January 31st, 2005, 01:18 AM It's really not cold all the time like most people think. The summers are beuftiful it's always nice and warm with a light breeze.
BKKinTO February 6th, 2005, 05:26 AM Awesome
acco40 February 6th, 2005, 05:50 AM wow, that is a very nice skyline. :) i think that anchorage is doing very well, and i hope to see more skyscrapers be built in it's beautiful landscape later on in the future.
i give a prefect score for the skyline, since it has both nice buildings, and a very nice climate around the city.
final vote - 10/10 :)
k-nohe February 6th, 2005, 07:12 AM The setting is simply outstanding. But so far from everything, so cold and I wonder how much sunshine you get in the middle of winter!
MuddyZehbra32 February 6th, 2005, 07:37 AM Not very mutch, winter is kind of depressing. but like I said before it is not always cold. Usualy in winter, we would lock ourselves in the house and turn the heat on really high :)...
Perth4life05 February 6th, 2005, 09:25 AM wow the first pic is so beautiful!
Rodrigo February 6th, 2005, 09:59 AM I went to Anchorage a few years ago while I lived in the Yukon and I liked the city. I stayed at the Sheraton in downtown, a fairly tall building.

MattSal May 31st, 2005, 04:35 PM Fairly surprising. I give it a 6.5/10.

i_am_hydrogen June 5th, 2005, 12:39 AM I've always liked Anchorage for some reason, though I've never been there. The skyline in all reality isn't that outstanding, but I like it, particularly in light of the incredible mountainous backdrop.
I give it a 5.0/10.

I meant there weren't that many tall buildings, or really old dense neighborhoods. What's there is beautiful, though. There's absolutely no disagreement there.
EdZed June 19th, 2005, 05:11 AM The skyline itself isint the greatest about 8/10.
But the mountains and the sound creates an amazing backdrop so;

Overall, fairly appealing. 4.5

Ral909 April 5th, 2007, 11:54 PM I give it a 10. How many cities in this world has a snow-capped mountain range in its background? And everyone loves Alaskans.
Well, many South American cities ( such as Santiago or Mendoza ) have the Andes as a backdrop. Mexico City has a trio of volcanos, each over 3,000 meters tall, surrounding the city. Denver, Portland and Seattle sometimes show the mountains. The Alps serve as a background for many european cities, and Beirut and Tehran both have beautiful ranges behind. But yes, there are very few cities that take the feel of Anchorage.

Comfortably Numb January 14th, 2008, 01:16 AM I'm going to give Anchorage 10/10.
Why? Well, for a relatively small city, it has an impressive skyline. Add to that, it's so far north and it's a very special/unique looking city and the icy/mountain backdrop just adds to the overall appeal of the place.
Besides, 36 Crazyfists are from there.

because it is a twin of my hometown (yellowknife) skyline-wise.
anchorage - yknife similarities:
- latitude (anch - 61, yknife - 62)
- both have waterfronts
- same skyline; but different patterns
anchorage:
- it has mountains, yknife doesn't
- pop is 285,000
- density is 64 per sq km.
- cool in summer, warm in winter
yknife:
- no mountains, pure rocky terrain
- pop is 17,000
- 3x denser than anchorage (200 per sq. km)
- warm in summer, cool in winter
therefore:
they're twin cities. lol

I had no idea Anchorage was so much bigger. You guys in Yellowknife need to get busy if you want to catch up in the population department. Nice info, but Yellowknife is not cool in the winter. I froze my hole off in Fort Frances last winter, and I doubt Yellowknife is warmer than the Ontario/Minnesota border. Cool would be 10C. Cold would be 0C. Anything below -5C is very cold.
What industry supports Anchorage? Energy and defence?
