There is one thing I hate - new developments that focus on apartment development! Building the ghettos of tomorrow..today.

New york end of collins street, lol. They should swap names, have docklands the paris end, because it has short buildings, and the east end to new york end, as it has all the tallies.

Great photos, but adding onto the post above, what is up with the stupid NY and Paris end terms???

I know this may be an un-answerable question: Does anyone have an idea of what the population density will be? Because I see so many residential towers.

I don't know exactly about NY but the term "Paris End" is quite old. Most sources say it dates from the establishment of the French salon Le Louvre in 1922. Other people say it was from the style of architecture and the trees that lined the road prior to buildings such as Collins Place coming along.

I'd say the term was most popular during the earlier parts of the century. Besides the French salon, another contributing factor was possibly the high number of artists, writers, performers, etc that lived and worked up that way.

In any case people throw the term 'Paris End' around a lot even today and I'd say for most people the actual origin of the term is long forgotten. All most people would know today is that it refers to the 'top' end of Collins, the eastern end.

I think 'New York' end may have been just thought up to sell some office space? It definetly doesn't have the history that the Paris term has. At least not that I can really find.

Zach - Apartments have been what has driven development so far because that was the biggest market demand at the time Docklands was initiated. However alot of upcoming development is office based and there are also alot of entertainment and retail developments already under construction.
Docklands will be no ghetto - it will be an incredibly diverse and interesting neighbourhood on it's completion.
This is pretty evident and has been discussed a million times over already - or are you just trolling Zach..........

^ oh shut up. I am not trolling. I hate any development in Australia that focuses purely on residential development. It's tacky and looks generic. Learn to take some criticism.

I cannot stand suburbs that are built up with some type of master plan. Usually what ends up is an area with no diversity and uniqueness.....Simply apartments and shops that all have the same style and design. I like suburbs that have been built up over many many years that have a complete range of architectural design and statement (not a meriton, devine or city equity focused development).

Just because my location is Sydney and I have a bad thing to say about another development in another city does not automatically make me a troll sir.

Actually Docklands is one area where the residential building look far from generic. The architecture is very high quality. Definately far better than the architecture of the admiraly precinct in Brisbane for example.

I don't know the architecture quality there but a few buildings here are pretty bad!

NAB

National Foods
Bendigo Bank (Melbourne Office)
ANZ
The Age (Fairfax Melb Office)

Docklands is coming along nicely for such a huge urban project and has a very diverse and exciting mixture of buildings and architecture- its not the southern Gold Coast at all!

Now if only it had a bustling populace to go with it. The future holds the key on that one.

Thanks Fabian.

They should get rid of the Bourke Street Footbridge and join east and west.

I'd be interested to know how you would build that bit of Bourke Street considering the rail lines are at grade.

theres nothiong fugly about the spencer st stack. the graffiti is the ugly part. if they remove that and give the stack a repaint or a polish, it would look quite charming. Chimneys look ugly when smoke and soot flow out of them. this stack was decommissioned many years ago.As far as concrete chimneys go, this one is detailed and has a unique 16sided shaft.really good proportion too.

It will be a sad day when its gone. part of melbournes history for past 50 years.

If there was enough space between the first rail line and Spencer st. they could have a relatively step grade climb for extending Bourke st. to the level of the present footbridge....probably no tramlines though...yet if they did have the road connection, what's to say if 15 years they turn it into a mall???

Couldnt resist putting in the grollo tower eh? If it wasnt on stilts & not such an enclave (all that green space around it looks isolated) it might have looked better.
Great pics of Docklands. Unsold on the chimney demolition. it adds a bit of character to what looks like a plastic neighbourhood.

I know the Grollo Tower is past history now...as I said its just all this campus style offices one after the other I just needed a release of frustration !!! The original idea for the stilts and open space was to have a monumental impact looking along Collins St....with the tower begining 10 stories up and lift lobbies below Collins St level only two slim shafts with open air around corner legs and throughbase of the tower...then the gardens reinforcing same theme....eg....as in the shrine, but different conotation.

Campus style not doing it for you?
They need a few more tallies to blend in with the city grid.

Bourke St doesn't need to be joined. It's not a through road anyway so a ped bridge is perfectly fine. There are alternatives for people who are desperately in need of driving from the Docklands in the CBD.

redbaron_012
May 8th, 2007, 05:24 AM
One last thing about the Grollo Tower proposal then I'll let it go!!!! The volume of office residential, apartments and Hotel would have possibly equalled lost lowrise alternative space, the gardens around it would have helped balance Melbournes open space parklands...with Treasury and Fitzroy Gardens to the east....Flagstaff north....and the main parks to the south it would have just given a green belt to the CBD..even if not complete like Adelaide.....The chances of large parklands being opened up in our cities in the 21st. Century are remote....We were probably lucky to get Birrarung Marr down by the Yarra. I know there is some parkland in the docklands but maybe it will only become more apparent as the built areas are covered. Lots of vacant blocks look all the same.

Just to clear this up,
Paris end= Prada, Gucci, Louis Vitton ect.
NY end (New term)= Rialto tower, buisness ect.

The "New York end" ad on that goods shed was only a play on words. The sign at the other end of the shed said "Move your office to a shed at the back of Bourke".
