Backround Information:
Although known to Arab and Malay sailors as early as the 10th century, Mauritius was first explored by the Portuguese in 1505; it was subsequently held by the Dutch, French, and British before independence was attained in 1968. A stable democracy with regular free elections and a positive human rights record, the country has attracted considerable foreign investment and has earned one of Africa's highest per capita incomes.

Economy - overview:
Since independence in 1968, Mauritius has developed from a low-income, agriculturally based economy to a middle-income diversified economy with growing industrial, financial, and tourist sectors. For most of the period, annual growth has been in the order of 5% to 6%. This remarkable achievement has been reflected in more equitable income distribution, increased life expectancy, lowered infant mortality, and a much-improved infrastructure. The government's development strategy centers on expanding local financial institutions and building a domestic information telecommunications industry. Mauritius has attracted more than 9,000 offshore entities, many aimed at commerce in India and South Africa, and investment in the banking sector alone has reached over $1 billion. Mauritius, with its strong textile sector, has been well poised to take advantage of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

Matthias Offodile December 29th, 2006, 05:40 PM unfortunately i haven't been yet but i do plan one to go. mauritious is another country that i have considered relocating to
Arzaranh, yes, Mauritius is truly wonderful (judging from the tons of pictures I have seen on the net). Moreover, it is a safe place to live. What truly astonishes me is that although la Réunion is just around the corner, it nevertheless looks so different to Mauritius. Mauritius beaches leave you speechless but the nature of La Réunion is extremely strikingly diversified.
Africa truly has gorgeous islands. You have got beautiful Cape Verde on the Western part (a place that I have fallen for and where I would love to go to), you have got Sao Tome off Gabon in Central Africa (promising future), you have got the wonderful island of Zanzibar on the Eastern part of our continent and you have beautiful la Réunion and Mauritius in Southern Africa.
All of those islands have their very distinctive character, in my opinion.
PS: Can I ask you which countries you have considering relocating to, Arzaranh (if it is not to personal)?

Wooow...Ouite a long list, you seem to be pretty flexible. :) What do you particularly like about Belize and Madagaskar? (just out of interest). For what I know about Central American countries, Costa Rica is the "Switzerland" of Central America: a fully consolidated and stable democracy and relatively strong economy with a pretty high standard of living for the region....

i see i ignored your last question matthias, sorry.
belize is (in no particular order):
a carribean country, i.e. warm
half of the population is african
english
inexpensive
madagaskar is one of the most fascinating places i have ever heard of. the landscapes, flora, fauna, people, cultures etc. also, if i did a genetic test i don't think i would be surprised if i had some malgasy ancestry - rice (THE main malgasy staple) is more important to my family than most other people.
