The 2010 Soccer World Cup seem to be the driving force behind the "home-coming revolution" of South African players who are plying their trade abroad.

Current Bafana Bafana players are to form basis of the 2010 team and most of the overseas-based players seem to think that they will be forgotten if they are far from home.

SuperSport United new signing Michael Nkambule has been quoted in the media saying his return from French team RC Strasbourg is due to his ambition to play for the senior national team. While most of the South African-based players still believe that going abroad enhances the chances of a national team call-up, they might re-think that if those abroad are making a comeback, then it's wise to stay put.

This has not yielded fruit for the likes of Mbulelo Mabizela
Nkambule is on a one year-loan deal and will join the players such as Mamelodi Sundowns trio of Bennet Mnguni, Mbulelo Mabizela and Josta Dladla as well as Golden Arrows' Japhet Zwane who came home with the hope of reviving their international careers.

This has not yielded fruit for the likes of Mbulelo Mabizela whose career has instead taken a fall after testing positive for a banned substance. He is yet to appear before the SAFA's disciplinary board.

Outgoing Bafana Bafana coach, Pitso Mosiamne said South African players, especially those who do not see regular action, are desperately looking for local teams. He cited his former striker Katlego Mphela as a good example of this situation.

"I spoke to him while in London and he said that since returning to France where he was on loan from last season, he has not scored as many goals as he did during his stint with United," Mosimane said

Mphela was ironically on loan from the very same club.

Mphela was five goals short of Moroka Swallows' Mame Niang 14 strikes. Bafana's German-based Sibusiso Zuma has also expressed his desire to return home. - Sapa

What a bad idea to return to SA, in the foreign leagues they will get much better and stronger.
Which players of the current team will we see in the Bafana team in 2010, strong enough to get to the 2nd round. No host nation was ever knocked out in the group stage, so don't let Bafana be the first.

Its difficult to say which current players will feature in 2010, but one thing for sure is that more than 80% of the would have aged and they won't make it to 2010.

Mark Glessin made a good point on thursday during his interview on SS3 that SA have not done a good work in terms of grooming up a good team from the under 23s that will be a replacement of the current squad for 2010. Well, lets wait and see as to what Parreira comes up with. Maybe he will turn things around for us.

I hope Parreira can do something, but I am afraid he lacks the international connections. Young SA players should be going to European leagues. With a reputated coach with lots of international connections it would have been easier to get Bafana players to teams in Europe.
No matter which european country, always better than to stay in SA.
Another option is to look for players in Europe with S-African roots, same way Jamaica did in 1998 and T&T last World Cup.
I believe Issa and Vonk also joined Bafana after this kind of investigation.
Too bad my son is only 5 when the WC is in S-Africa

who cares who plays as long as they dont embarrass us or parreira would have been given a bucket load of money for no reason. nothing will be more embarrassing than us failing to win a single match. hopefully that wont happen, but the players need to learn some discipline!

If we can at least reach the quarters.

are u serious? bafana wont be making it past the first round. what we need is a decent performance in each of their three matches in cape town, johannesburg and durban.

I think Bafana can surprise and survive the first round.
Ghana reached the 2nd round last WC, I am sure SA can do the same.
I am sure the group SA will be in will not be the strongest
Could be something like
Bafana
Sweden
Japan
Costa Rica

Just like Germany last year

come on Mo, With a whole nation ( maybe a whole continent) behind them, they can play better than ever before.
Same as South Korea in 2002, get Guus Hiddink , it is not too late !!!!

what will be the banana banana team in 2010- still a bunch of over paid/skill -less goofs who despite the fact that its the national game, embarress us at evry oppotunity.

I see Austrlaia when soccer is small compared to AFL/League/union and cricket yet they make the world cup on merit (not like us as we are hosting it), beat england at home etc and generally have put their house in order

thats the norm.australia have managed to do well in most sports, even the sports they were traditionally not that good at. I see this continuing, south africa is more concerned about quotas in some sports than actually producing good sports teams. anyway we beat india so now we get to lose the next 5 sports events of interest to south africans.

Bafana can do well in 2010, if we prepare for it, maybe even go past the group stages :dunno:
