Suburbanist April 18th, 2011, 03:01 AM Yeah but then people start posting flowers and shit.
Maybe they should open a sub-thread for general photo contests and provide some more strict guidelines on what qualifies as urban. Otherwise, we'll see nature landscape, close-up on cute animals, pictures of parties paparazzi-style etc.
Somnifor April 18th, 2011, 06:33 PM Part of the issue is that people have different ideas of what urban photography is. Some people think it is just architecture, some have a broader definition. For me it is anything that is in an urban context, if you can see that a person or a flower is in a city based on the other stuff in the photograph it is urban, if you can't it isn't.
sidney_jec April 18th, 2011, 10:18 PM Ni3lS
Since you have closed down the thread its safe to assume its only urban. no matter who/what is in the photograph?
Ni3lS April 18th, 2011, 10:26 PM Yes, that's what this contest has always been about. It would be silly to change the concept after all those years. For any further questions I'd like to refer you to JAN (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/member.php?u=1).
This is one of the rules in the first post: ''These forums are about skyscrapers, cities and urban issues. If you want to poll images of your partying mates do so in the Skybar.''
Jan is the creator of this contest and therefore he knows everything about it. He can tell you exactly what's right and what's wrong.
sidney_jec April 18th, 2011, 10:30 PM na na. I was just confirming for my own sake :)
the last few posts suggested otherwise thats why I guess this one has a lot of snaps with people in them which arent very suggestive of an urban setting.

Can this be deleted? I forgot to click on the Poll option.

lkiller123 May 30th, 2011, 08:08 PM I thought new contests are supposed to begin every Saturday, why is it Monday now?
I submitted my picture on Saturday due to the misunderstanding, can I resubmit my picture?
Ni3lS May 30th, 2011, 08:13 PM Well, like I commented on your photo, it's at the end of the week. Yes it says specifically saturday but Jan has other stuff to do as well. Sometimes it's a little bit later than saturday. Best way to check is to ask or just by seeing how many topics are already there, the week number [voting thread], the amount of replies on each photo etc etc. I wouldn't recommend reposting your photo since a lot of people will say that you posted it before and will give you a lower rate because of it. And btw in order to get to the finals a minimum amount of votes [15] is needed. I think at least 15 people voted on your photo so it's doubtful if you'd made to the finals anyway because that means that Jan did look at the average vote on your photo. :)
lkiller123 May 30th, 2011, 08:21 PM So, let me try to get this straight.
The contests that are posted each week (such as "VOTE! Contest 2011/22 (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=1389924)" for this week) are not from the entries posted during the previous week, it is randomized and shuffled, am I right?
I still don't really get how this works... Help me please:cheers:
Ni3lS May 30th, 2011, 09:27 PM No, they are from last week. You just didn't make it ;)

Oh, better luck next time I guess
Vagamundo. August 14th, 2011, 10:28 AM Today i find a troll with three diferent names down voting in All the polls ./
musiccity August 15th, 2011, 12:49 PM ^^
Yes! They've given everyone either a 5/10 or lower.
cinxxx August 21st, 2011, 10:44 AM Hello!
If I want to post a picture here, what is the time-frame?
When does the current nominating end and when does the next one start?
Thanks.
Ni3lS August 21st, 2011, 02:46 PM Hi there. Contest usually starts on saturday and ends on saturday. So posting a picture right now is perfect :)
cinxxx August 21st, 2011, 05:03 PM Thanks Ni3lS, I posted it, hope it's OK,
I guess the highest score is 10 and the lowest is 1, right? :)
Ni3lS August 21st, 2011, 05:31 PM Yup. Good luck this week.
cinxxx September 3rd, 2011, 06:23 PM Hi guys. Just one quick question, in the rules in the first post it's said that:
- In order to be nominated, an image must be voted on at least 15 votes.
Not that I want to be rude or something, but "IT’S BEEN USEFUL" has only 14 voters ... has this rule changed? I was only curious what averages the ones over me had, so I calculated them, and then saw this thing with 14 votes.

musiccity September 19th, 2011, 05:02 PM If you give someone lower than an 8/10, please state why. It's polite.
Ni3lS September 19th, 2011, 06:05 PM Lower than an 8? I disagree, why such a high standard? If you'd be talking about a 6 or lower I'd agree.
musiccity September 19th, 2011, 07:14 PM Lower than an 8? I disagree, why such a high standard? If you'd be talking about a 6 or lower I'd agree.
Well you get the jist, if you give someone a low score please explain why so the photographer can improve.
musiccity September 19th, 2011, 07:28 PM Another question, am I allowed to remove a submission, (My coca-cola photo) I feel it is un-worthy amongst all these excellent photos this week. :cripes:
Ni3lS September 19th, 2011, 10:06 PM You shouldn't feel that way. Just let it stay. :)
Mossy22 September 28th, 2011, 09:33 PM Am i allowed to post the photo i put in the contest section in my urban photo thread too? - as part of a set along with other photos from the area :)
Ni3lS September 29th, 2011, 08:38 PM Sure!
musiccity October 10th, 2011, 04:40 AM I wish there was a photographer's chat thread called the Darkroom or something.
I have so many question but I don't know where to ask them..

Just PM photographers whose work you like. That's what I did, and one year later, I was out shooting with one of them.

There is one in the general photography section :)
Union.SLO October 10th, 2011, 03:54 PM Niels, do you have any info why there's no voting this week?
Ni3lS October 11th, 2011, 02:27 PM No I do not. I think Jan might have forgotten about it. He's quite busy these days I believe.
musiccity October 17th, 2011, 05:34 PM So umm.. what happened to the UPC??
The photos from 2 weeks ago never had a contest and last weeks photos haven't even been archived yet alone a contest.

Just happens from time to time.
musiccity October 17th, 2011, 10:02 PM ^^
Hasn't happened in a while
Should I go ahead and post this weeks entry? How will mods/admins know that it wasn't from last week?
Marcanadian October 17th, 2011, 10:44 PM If Jan is busy, can't one of the other four mods in this section take over? Usually somebody does. I have a ton of photos I wanted to enter over the coming weeks.
Ni3lS October 17th, 2011, 11:43 PM I could take over but never do so without asking. Besides, I competed during these weeks myself so it would be kinda weird. I'll pm Jan and Jota Pe.

You're telling me: over two hundred photos of my first month in Portland. I feel like an Iowa corn grower with such an absurd excess of photos for this contest.
Ni3lS October 18th, 2011, 07:07 PM Lol, be patient people. The script that usually counts the votes etc. didn't work last week. So that's the answer to Q1 [why couldn't we vote for last weeks best pictures?] Jan also said he was at a congress in Seoul this week so he did not have time to start a new contest this week yet. That's the answer to Q2. [what's up with this week's contest?]
Jan October 18th, 2011, 09:59 PM Sorry guys, sometimes things go tits up when you are busy far and away, and this was one of these cases. I'll go sort it out as soon as possible.
Aztecgoddess October 19th, 2011, 12:29 AM You better
 j/k
ThatDarnSacramentan October 21st, 2011, 05:19 AM Since two weeks are missing, are we going to be able to enter four entries when the new round starts instead of the usual two?
234sale October 21st, 2011, 03:33 PM ^^ Addict.. ;)

Says the man who jumped the gun and posted a new entry. ;)

Less is more IMO.
ThatDarnSacramentan October 21st, 2011, 10:06 PM Less is more IMO.
Right, but the way it is now, there'd be no entries for Week 43. I'm just spitballing here.
Jan October 25th, 2011, 02:44 AM Okay, I finally got this one fixed. Apologies for the delay, it came at a very inconvenient moment. The good news is that this week you get to vote twice. :)
openlyJane October 27th, 2011, 01:16 PM Jan,
Could you delete my five threads from the forum. I, admittedly, did not check the rules before posting, and am uncertain how to proceed with a poll.
I will start again when I receive some advice. Sorry for the mess.
Somnifor November 19th, 2011, 06:00 PM Why is DFDalton allowed to post in this section? All he does is troll people who enter photographs. It is that type of posting that drives people away from the contest.
Liwwadden November 20th, 2011, 01:24 AM IMO, he takes it a bit too far once in a while, but he is one of the few people who actually manages to produce a real comment. Way better than the bulk of the voters who just post their rating.

I'd rather take a nasty informed comment than a random, meaningless string of numbers. I agree with Liwwadden.
Ni3lS November 20th, 2011, 05:10 PM Though he is mostly talking nonsense, I agree. It's better than ../... etc.
El_Greco November 21st, 2011, 07:16 PM Yeah, sometimes you get the idea posters on UPC are just after increasing their post count....lets have some comments!
Johnoo1 November 24th, 2011, 06:12 PM I really don't get this 10/10 for pictures that are not that good. How does someone feel when they have great picture and its gets the same as something quite average or worse?
NewAge November 28th, 2011, 12:19 AM hey can someone please help me on how to add a poll on my thread so viewers can vote on my photo? I'm new here and I don't know how to do it. I uploaded my photo, people can see it but I cant take part at the urban photo contest cause there is no 1-10 poll on my thread.
Somnifor November 28th, 2011, 08:58 AM I really don't get this 10/10 for pictures that are not that good. There are differences in taste.

When you are posting a new thread you need to check the option "Add a poll to this thread" (number of poll options = 10) which can be found at the bottom of the page. When you click 'submit' you'll be redirected to the 'poll creator'. Remember to put the 10 on top and not reverse ;)
musiccity November 30th, 2011, 10:40 PM Address to UPC,
Constructive criticism is great, I appreciate a 5/10 with reasoning and constructive criticism better than a sole "8/10" but don't go overboard. Remember these are real photos take by real people who have a real love for photography. I've gotten my feelings hurt several times in this contest with comments like "sorry but your photo sucks" and "very bad photo 2/10".. these kind of comments are in no way helpful.
I've noticed a growing trend in the UPC to give unnecessarily harsh criticism and I think it's borderline trollish to be so harsh as real people with real feelings are posting these entries.
This is also an address to mods, I'm tired of voters saying whatever the hell they want. If people can't be civil then a set of rules and guidelines should be given to voters also.
That is all..
Fernando A December 1st, 2011, 05:52 AM I would like to know what day you can start posting for the contest, and what 's the last day as well, please
I woud appreciate your response
Thanks

The contest usually begins on Saturday, sometimes a bit later. You can identify a new contest when there is a voting for the previous week's finalists available.
You can enter a photo whenever you want, but it does not make really sense to submit one on Thursday or Friday because less people are going to vote for it. Photos with just a few votes are often disqualifying for being finalists at the end of the week.

io_bg January 18th, 2012, 06:46 PM Hi guys, I tried my luck with a picture a couple of months ago but it didn't make it to the weekly contest. I recently modified it slightly so I'd want to post it again. Am I allowed to do so?
John123 January 19th, 2012, 12:21 AM ^^ I don't think it is allowed, but years ago, if I remember correctly, someone posted the same photo twice, in B&W and in color.

In my opinion, you can try it. When it is visibly different than the first one, why not? From what I have experienced I can say that some voters stay away automatically from voting when they remember a photo.
ikops January 19th, 2012, 01:29 PM You could ask one of the responsible mods.
