Yes. People in Scandinavia have a hard time driving when it's less snowy than this, I dont want to imagine how it feels to drive in that much snow. :lol:

Tehran1 January 11th, 2008, 09:14 PM Infact it snows in iran every year in almost all parts of the country (especially in the mountains) it is very much a normality. But this year has seen the heaviest snowfall for 10 years.
And you'll be suprised to know that Iran has ski slopes from november time to mid march aswell, which in addition to is around the fourth highest slope in the world.

Nope, they have some very interesting ski resorts. Also I flew over Iran last March, mountain areas were as snowy as Alps, but also lower areas were very beautiful.

Well guys I didn't think that Iran has such roads too. But I'm not foxified for sure. Because I don't have it :D There not many information about Iran available. I thought it was very desert and hot. Some people think that Baltic states are very cold. We didn't have snow at all this awful "winter". Tjhe only normal snow was in march :( :nuts: :ohno:

sorry Alexriga. I get carried away but time and time again I read these posts from US members expressing amazement, or disparaging, things modern in other countries.
Fox is a TV channel nationally here in the USA which is a little to the right of Ghengis Khan! ie very right wing.
Its staff continually makes disparaging remarks about any nation or person who disagrees with the US. The rest of the world is consistently portrayed as weird. odd. backward. Hence "being Foxified ".:ohno:

You know, I've always thought that Iran was a very "dry" country (mostly desert or sub-desert), but these pics illustrate how incredibly "green" much of Iran is. Much of that scenery is breathtaking too....I'd really like to go there, rent a car and explore. The highways have a sense of grandeur, just like the highways in other big countries such as the US.
Ahhh...the Fox effect, as someone pointed out. We're made to believe that somehow, countries like Iran are less developed, when these pics do enough themselves to prove otherwise, i.e. that there are many other developed countries, other than just the USA.

Well, actually Iran is really half 'dry'. But that's what makes Iran's trees and grass even more beautiful: somewhat unexpectedness and uniqueness. And another pair of shoes is when we are talking about cities, for example Tehran: it is built on a desert but look at it, it's all green. People made it green, that's what i admire the most.
Besides, stones can be as beautiful as grass and flowers, especially if they are neighbors. :)

Even the desert is beautiful though. Some of those pics remind me of driving from LA to Las Vegas.....deserts have a certain quality about them.
Maybe one day, the human race will put all the BS/fighting over religion, oil and politics aside and Iran will become a major tourist destination.

I been to Iran 5 years ago, and drivers there are far worse than anything I seen in the US.

Thanks all, so Iran have can have a network however Iran doesn't seem to be part of a regional organisation to improve and construct his network. With oil and gas, Iran can make an infrastructure plan.

Tehran deputy mayor for technical and developmental affairs announced that part of seven projects involving Bakeri Highway has been made operational, adding, “The crossing between Bakeri and Abshenasan highways has been opened and will help reduce motor traffic on Tehran – Karaj highway and around Ekbatan Township.”
SAMA quoted Ahmad Donyamali as saying in the inauguration ceremony of the crossing that metal structure of the flyover is remarkable in architectural terms and its lighting system is also new.
He noted that completing the highway ring was another goal of the project to reduce traffic on Sheikh Fazlollah, Hemmat, and Yadegar Emam highways.
“Concrete parts are auto-cleaning which are cleaning with sunlight and this property heads off corrosion and the need for repainting the flyover,” he said.

Iranian car manufacturers produce lots of different French cars under licences from Peugeot, Renault etc. Iran Khodro is one of the biggest car manufactures, there is even a special exit from motorway and metro station for Iran Khodro ;) Besides local cars and French models Kia seems to be the most popular cars (also produced locally).

Specifically, every country in Europe except GB and IE. Even if it's not all in "scribbly", it's still as hard to make out what it says on electronic signs etc.

You forgot Greece, everything in the latin script there is also translated into English. Of course, if the country already has the Latin alphabet, the place names don't have to be translated - only the electronic signs and those warning signs that contain additional explanations.

For the same reason Iran doesn't provide spanish and french translations: they're useless. I didn't say anything about place names, translating those when they're already in a Latin script would indeed be silly.
If someone's transiting through a country in Europe (which is very common) and there's a huge pileup or slippery conditions on the road ahead, it's downright irresponsible to not provide warnings in English on overhead signs in addition to whatever local language is used. This is not silly, it's common sense.

Most cars in Iran are manufactured locally, because almost all cars run on leaded fuel (hence the incredible air pollution in Iranian megacities).

vatse November 11th, 2010, 12:53 PM Motorway 2 from Tehran to Qazwin
It's one of the most important roads for Iran connecting Tehran to Tabriz and from there on to Turkey and Europe or Middle East. All the traffic from Tehran to Azerbaijan or Armenia and Georgia is using also the same road until Qazwin.
The first part of the road is actually urban motorway through Tehran's industrial western part and then it continues through western satellite towns so first ~50 km of motorway is very important for Greater Tehran also.

Metro line 5 is running parallel to motorway most of the time. It's actually more like suburban train connecting western parts of Greater Tehran to the city center and using double decker trains.

Seems that it's not working for some years now. Probably because it's cheaper to let the people drive for free than rebuild the station for huge traffic running on motorway. Road tolls on Iranian motorways are really small and more like symbolic.

Oldest parts of this motorway were probably opened some years ago. These were between motorway 2 and road 49 near Qazvin and small stretch north of Rostam Abad. Rest of the motorway was opened probably during the first part of year 2010. Currently the motorway is missing only the part between Manjil and Roodbar. As it's the most difficult part of the road to build it could take some more years to finish this part.
As the motorway and road 49 are not crossing the Alborz mountains but rather going through the mountains using natural gorges it's going all the way down hill between Qazvin and Caspian Sea.

I've read somewhere Tehran is the "Los Angeles of the Middle East". (not sure if Iran is still considered to be a part of the Middle East).
Sadly Iran has quite a bad image as we all know. And at the same time the real life in Iran is so different from this image so you just have to go and see it by yourself. And for most of Europeans it's actually quite easy to get the visa and travel to Iran.
I don't know what is meant by this "Los Angeles of the Middle East" but I have heard that LA is called Tehran of USA because there is considerable and very active Iranian community ;)

vatse November 18th, 2010, 12:33 PM Road 49 between Bandar-e-Anzali and Rezvanshahr. Road 49 continues all the way until Astara on the border of Azerbaijan. Most of the traffic to Azerbaijan is actually by-passing Rasht and Bandar-e-Anzali along the new road which is joining road 49 north of Rezvanshahr.

No, but one thing that does look a tad anachronistic to me is the use of cloverleaf interchanges, without C/D roads. In Western countries such interchanges are no longer built due to excessive land take and problems with weaving traffic. I presume most of Iran's freeways are recent, as car ownership levels only recently became high enough to justify them.
Another thing -- it seems surprising (especially given recent political history) how much British influence there is on the signage:
The Latin-script text uses the Transport font, as on British signs.
Freeway signs are in blue, signs for other major roads are in green. (The Iranian green seems a bit lighter than the British green though).
The "fork" signs for exit slip roads, and the countdown markers (bars only, not mainland Europe style markers with numbers of metres above).
Pointed direction signs with a chevron arrow at the junction itself.

Many freeways in Iran are not so recent and some are in fact pre-1979, when Iran was a close ally of the Western world. At that time truck traffic between Europe and Iran was at its peak, with hundreds of trucks going there daily. This was the golden era of trucking to M/E countries, starting from the first run by Astran in 1963, from London to Kabul, till the end of 80's.

About prejudgments, I also live on a third world country, but seen as a "well developing country" one, developed countries tend to think good about us. In general, freeways looks similar as the ones who I drive, except by the snow, and the crazy drivers, of course haha.

It's probably a sign showing the beginning of restricted area for certain cars at the central Tehran. Due to huge pollution central Tehran is closed for many private cars at certain times of day. I can't remember the exact rules anymore. I can read only numbers from the sign and seems that the restriction is from 6.30 to 18.00.
I'm pretty sure that few foreign cars driving in Tehran are not forced to follow this restriction. So no problem when I can't read the sign :)

The main problem in Iran is that nearly all vehicles run on leaded(!) fuel. This can also be seen in the statistics, 80% of the air pollution in Tehran is due to transportation, while this is only 5 - 15% in western cities.

Those are some fantastic photos, especially where the freeway cuts through the mountains!
I'm not sure about cloverleaves - where there is not too much turning traffic a cloverleaf can be a fine solution, such as an interchange with a non-freeway that needs more than a diamond but doesn't need anything more elaborate.
The British get rather snooty about cloverleaves, but seem happy with motorway-to-motorway roundabout interchanges which are inferior in my opinion as they are not even free-flowing.

There are lots of Turkish trucks and buses on motorway between Tehran and Turkish border. Otherwise it's really rear to see any foreign cars except at border areas. Even international buses or trucks from other neighboring countries to Tehran are very rear to seen. I have seen only one or two trucks from Azerbaijan and Pakistan on the way to Tehran during my trips. In Central Iran I have seen only some tourists on overland trips with their cars or motorcycles.

I hate this way to use concrete barriers. It would be safer to place stones. Unfortunately, in other countries use barriers in the same way.

And at the same time the real life in Iran is so different from this image so you just have to go and see it by yourself. And for most of Europeans it's actually quite easy to get the visa and travel to Iran.
I don't know what is meant by this "Los Angeles of the Middle East" but I have heard that LA is called Tehran of USA because there is considerable and very active Iranian community ;)
I've never been to LA or Iran, but LA is known for an abundance of highways and especially bad traffic. I would assume that is what he meant. Never heard the expression though.
Fantastic photos! As someone who liked car design of the late '80s and early '90s much better than recent design, it's cool to see so much of the traffic in that style. The 405 is one of my favorite cars.

الکترونیکی کردن اخذ عوارض آزاد*راه*های قزوین-رشت و تهران-پردیس در گام*های بعد
رئیس سازمان راهداری و حمل و نقل جاده*ای ادامه داد: پس از اتمام پروژه الکترونیکی کردن اخذ عوارضی در آزاد*راه تهران _ قم به سراغ آزاد*راه*های قزوین _ رشت و تهران _ پردیس خواهیم رفت و به تدریج تمامی آزاد*راه*ها به سیستم etc تجهیز خواهند شد.
معاون وزیر راه و شهرسازی با بیان اینکه در این*باره مناقصه*ای برگزار شد و با شرکت برنده مناقصه، به انعقاد قرارداد پرداختیم، خاطرنشان کرد: برای اجرای این امر در سطح گسترده پیمانکار مشخص شده و به زودی با تکمیل طرح، پروژه به صورت epc اجرا خواهد شد.
رئیس سازمان راهداری و حمل و نقل جاده*ای ادامه داد: در صورت اجرای این امر، تا سال آینده می*توان تمامی عوارضی*ها را به این سیستم مجهز کرد.
گیت*های سنتی اخذ عوارض به تدریج حذف می*شوند
معاون وزیر راه و شهرسازی با اشاره به اینکه پروژه etc در 3 مرحله اجرا می*شود، تصریح کرد: در گام اول تنها برخی از گیت**های عوارضی به این سیستم الکتریکی مجهز خواهند شد، زیرا به هر حال ممکن است برخی از خودرو*ها در اوایل اجرای پروژه به این سیستم مجهز نباشند اما به تدریج گیت*های الکترونیکی اضافه و گیت*های سنتی حذف خواهند شد.

علی نیکزاد در باره آخرین وضعیت ساخت آزادراه تهران - شمال اظهارداشت: در حال حاضر قطعه 1 و 4 این آزادراه در حال ساخت است و بنیاد مستضعفان مسئولیت این بخش را برعهده دارد.
وی در رابطه با بخش های دیگر این آزادراه گفت: برای ساخت قطعه های 2 و 3 هم به دنبال رایزنی با بخش خصوصی هستیم تا در صورت توافق کلنگ زنی آن آغاز شود.
وزیر راه و شهرسازی درباره حضور قرارگاه سازندگی خاتم الانبیاء در این پروژه بیان کرد: هیچ قراردادی با این قرارگاه و یا قرارگاه سازندگی خاتم الاوصیاء برای ساخت آزادراه تهران - شمال وجود ندارد.
قائم*مقام وزیر راه و شهرسازی اعلام کرده است: آزاد راه تهران- شمال نسبت به طراحی قبلی افزایش ظرفیت خواهد یافت و پیش*بینی سرعت خودروهای جدید در اصلاح طراحی این آزادراه صورت گرفته است.
پیل پایه افزوده است: از آنجایی که منطقه صعب*العبور این پروژه هنوز دست نخورده باقی مانده است، بنابراین می*توان تغییراتی را در طراحی پروژه اعمال کرد تا مطابق با نیاز مسافران و سرعت خودروها به اجرا برسد.
گفتنی است آزادراه تهران – شمال از غرب تهران یعنی تقاطع بزرگراه همت شروع و با عبور از ناحیه کن، سولقان، دوآب (شهرستانک)، گچسر و مرزن آباد به کمربندی چالوس - تنکابن متصل می*شود. طول این آزاد راه در مجموع 121 کیلومتر و دارای دو خط عبور در هر باند و پیش*بینی سه خط در فرازهای تند است.

mitasis November 27th, 2011, 12:49 PM We are planning for 2012 a road trip from our city (Thessaloniki Greece) to Tehrann by car! ( yes a little crazy thought, but really charming idea). What's the situation of road between turkish-iranian border until Tehran? Is there significant part of the route a motorway? In google maps extended parts are shown as motorway but on the sattelite mode nothing is seen! If somebody knows it would be really nice to be informed what is te real situation of this route. Nima-Farid November 27th, 2011, 06:37 PM I am not sure about Turkey but in Iran from Border to Marand (200 km) it is a 2 lane road but with good quality. from Marand to Tabriz and further west to Bostanabad (120 km) it is a 4 lane expressway and from there to Tehran it is a 6 lane motorway (600 km). Tabriz is a very beautiful city. Tehran too. Glad you are coming to Iran. :)
Nima-Farid January 5th, 2012, 09:13 AM ن نیوز: رئیس شورای شهرستان شوشتر از ابهامی دیگر در مسیر آزادراه سربندر به تهران در خوزستان خبر داد و بر پیگیری سریع این موضوع توسط دستگاه*های مسئول تاکید کرد.
امیر رسولی شامگاه سه*شنبه در جلسه شورای اسلامی شهر شوشتر اظهار داشت: در کنار شهر حسینیه در نزدیکی شهرستان اندیمشک به بهانه ساخت کمربندی این شهر جاده*ای احداث شده که دارای شش باند است و احداث این جاده، شائبه و نگرانی درباره تغییر مسیر آزادراه در خوزستان تقویت می*کند.
وی با اشاره به دیگر مسائلی که تردید در مسیر قبلی را در این باره تقویت می*کند، تاکید کرد: در نقشه*های طراحی شده و سرمایه*گذار تعیین شده مسیر دزفول به شوشتر به جای آزاد راه به عنوان بزرگراه در نظر گرفته شده و این امر تضییع حقوق مردم این شهرها به شمار می*آید.
این مقام مسئول با اشاره به اینکه باید برای پیگیری این مشکل از همه اهرم*های قانونی استفاده کرد، گفت: باید از توان نمایندگان مجلس، نماینده ولی*فقیه در استان و... برای رسیدن به حقوق این شهرستان*ها استفاده کرد همانطوری که در شهرستان دزفول مردم در حال جمع*آوری طومار در این باره هستند.
رسولی با تاکید بر اینکه آزادراه از سال*های گذشته طراحی شده و ضرورت احداث آن کاملا مبرهن است، افزود: طراحی این مسیر از سال52 انجام شده و نباید بر اساس برخی مسائل مردم این شهرستان*ها را از وجود چنین نعمتی محروم کرد و باید برای صحت و سقم این موضوع بررسی بیشتری انجام شود.
رئیس شورای شهرستان شوشتر خاطرنشان کرد: احداث این آزادراه می*تواند استان خوزستان را از نظر اقتصادی متحول کند و محروم کردن شهرستان*های دیگر از این نعمت کار صحیحی نیست.
آزادراه خلیج فارس در خوزستان در قطعه دو ساخته می*شود که قطعه نخست آن سال 86 با حضور رئیس جمهور در محور اهواز ـ سربندر افتتاح شد و با افتتاح قطعه دوم آن شبکه آزاد راه خوزستان به آزاد راه*های کشور متصل می*شود.
مطالعات طرح احداث آزادراه بندر امام به تهران که عملیات اجرایی آن پیش از انقلاب (در قالب بزرگراه) در چند نقطه از جمله شوشتر آغاز شده بود و با بروز جنگ تحمیلی متوقف شد، پس از گذشت سال*ها مجدداً در دهه 70 آغاز شد و تاکنون قطعاتی از آن به مرحله اجرا و بهره*برداری رسیده است.
نخستین قطعه آن «بندر امام - اهواز» به طول 90 کیلومتر احداث و در سال 86 به بهره*برداری رسیده است.
قطعه مهم دیگر این آزاد راه «پل زال - خرم آباد» است که عملیات آن از سال 80 آغاز شده و امسال به بهره*برداری رسید که موجب کوتاه*تر شدن 60 کیلومتر از مسیر اندیمشک - پل دختر - خرم آباد و کاهش آمار تصادفات و تلفات جانی شده است. قطعه دیگر این آزادراه در خوزستان پل زال - اندیمشک - اهواز است.
طبق مطالعات اولیه، دو مسیر پیشنهادی برای قطعه اندیمشک - اهواز وجود دارد که یکی از غرب رودخانه دز و دیگری از شرق آن است.
با احداث آزاد راه در مسیر پیشنهادی دوم، شهرهای دزفول، شوشتر، ملاثانی و ویس به طور مستقیم و شهرستان*های گتوند، لالی، مسجدسلیمان، اندیکا و هفتکل بصورت غیر مستقیم از مزایای دسترسی به آزادراه سراسری «تهران - بندر امام» بهره مند شده و موجب رونق این مناطق مستعد و افزایش رغبت سرمایه*گذاران و کاهش ریسک سرمایه*گذاری در استفاده از منابع بالقوه این مناطق پرجمعیت خواهد شد.

GROBIN January 24th, 2012, 11:03 PM A small OT: I often see Iranian lorries around 3km from my house. They sometimes leave their original license plates on it, but mostly they get temporary latin-lettered & Arabic original numbers on it.
If I go with a European-plated car to Iran, shall I have to change it for a temporary Iranian one ?
