from the looks of it, they are hollow steel structures, which explains why they look so little time to erect.

these are steel columns ... when you said moulded ... u mean casted i believe. however, its too large to cast + this process won't give the necessary strength it requires.

these should be steel pipes (columns) that are forged or rolled to give it the necessary strength.

do correct me if i'm wrong.

just my 2 cents

Singapore Flyer expected to open on 7 Feb 2008
By Wong Siew Ying, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 13 December 2006 2051 hrs

SINGAPORE: Here's some good news for those who can't wait to take a spin on the Singapore Flyer at Marina Bay.

The giant observation wheel, which measures 165 metres high, is expected to be opened months ahead of schedule on 7th February 2008.

On Wednesday the spindle - the pivot of the wheel - was put into position, a process which took some 12 hours.

Weighing 180 tonnes, it took 30 days to ship the spindle from Japan to Singapore.

At 25 metres long, the spindle is believed to be the largest equipment to be delivered on the road, requiring a trailer with 120 wheels.

Phil Maddox, General Manager for Technical Services for the Singapore Flyer project, said: "From an operation and mechanical point of view, it's the heart of the wheel concept. It's also the heart of the construction process....this is the major part, after which we start constructing the actual wheel and attaching the capsules at a later date."

Once the construction is over, there will be training for 150 staff who will take care of security, operations and maintenance of the venue.

Some 82,000 square feet of retail and dining space have been set aside at the venue.

The developer says it has already received numerous enquiries about the rental of retail and F&B space there.

It expects a healthy take-up during the retail launch over the next two months.

Patsy Ong, Exclusive Sales, Marketing and Distribution Agent, said: "We are looking at pricing it below market rate, because at the end of the day, the tenants themselves have to do well. We want them to do well, so that the turnover of tenants will be low and we are looking at them as being our partners."

Peter Purcell, Managing Director for the Singapore Flyer project, said: "What we are saying to them is, we are not looking to maximize rental value because the rent from the retail centre is not a major component here. What we are saying is, we want something fresh, alive, different."

In the weeks ahead, the developer will start promoting the Singapore Flyer to tour operators and tourists, especially those from China.

The S$240 million Singapore Flyer is expected to open during the Chinese New Year period in 2008, coinciding with celebrations at Marina Bay.

It is part of the government's plan to revamp the area which will include the integrated resort, a new bridge, gardens and financial centre.

All these will be ready in the next few years. - CNA/ir

The main spindle of future ferris wheel Singapore Flyer, weighing 180 tonnes, being erected (anti-clockwise from top left) at Marina Bay. The operation began at 8.30am yesterday and took more than 10 hours to complete.

The spindle is the horizontal structure on which the 165m-high observation wheel - the height of a 42-storey building - will pivot when the entire project is completed.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan took five months to build the 20m-long spindle at a cost of $2.2 million.

The Singapore Flyer, located at Marina Bay, will have 28 fully air-conditioned and UV-protected capsules which can carry 35 people each.

A synchronised double-door entry/exit system will enable access from both sides and passengers are expected to experience an easy 'step on' access, making it particularly convenient for the elderly and disabled.

The Flyer complex will have parking for 40 tour buses and 280 motor vehicles.

It is scheduled to be completed by early 2008.

Shanghai stalls star ferris wheel project
(Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-01-11 19:59

Fans of Ferris wheels will be disappointed as the project to build the world's tallest Ferris wheel in Shanghai has been canceled, replacing it with an office high-rise, Shanghai Morning Post reported Wednesday.

The design for the Shanghai Star Ferris Wheel project, which was set to be the highest ferris wheel in the world.

The Shanghai Star Ferris wheel was to stand 200 to 230 meters above its Hongkou District neighborhood, beating the London Eye, which sits 135 meters above the ground and holds the world's height title.

However, "the project proved to be unfeasible as it is a contravention against the designated function of the land, which is to offer shipping services," an official with the development office of the Shanghai north Bund told the newspaper Wednesday.

A Hangzhou-based private real-estate developer won the rights in April 2005 to buy the plot reserved for the amusement ride for 1.46 billion yuan, the highest price ever paid for the city's land at that time.

The high-flying wheel was scheduled to serve as an anchor for an entertainment and commercial complex that was expected to attract millions of visitors to the Huangpu River location every year -- and join the Oriental Pearl TV Tower and the Jin Mao building as Shanghai's prime skyline icons.

"The city's planning authority now has a new plan for the land," said the official. "A one-hundred-meter high office building."

But the future of the land is still in limbo as the Shanghai Municipal Housing, Land and Resource Administration Bureau is waiting for a developer for the 35,210-square-meter plot, said the official.

For a few years ? I think not. For a few months ? Most likely. The same German company that is building the Singapore Flyer is also building big wheels in four other cities ie. Qingdao, Dubai, Beijing & Berlin. The biggest wheel would be at Beijing with a height of 208m and scheduled to be completed in August 2008. Check out the company website :-

Ride on S'pore Flyer for under $30

Although costlier than other attractions, prices will be kept relatively low to attract locals

31 Jan 07

http://www.straitstimes.com/STI/STIMEDIA/image/20070130/ST_IMAGES_MRFLYER-L7Wt.jpg

IT WILL be $29.50 for that top-of-the-world feeling - a 37-minute ride on Singapore's giant observation wheel, the Singapore Flyer, when it opens early next year.
The 165m-tall attraction, the height of a 42-storey building, is not charging sky-high prices to attract more Singaporeans: Four in 10 of the anticipated 2.5 million passengers in the wheel's first year are expected to be from here.

Prices are being set low to pull them in, said Ms Patsy Ong, managing director of Adval Brand Group, the project's marketing agent.

Children aged three to 12 will pay $20.65, while senior citizens over 60 will pay $23.60, or 20 per cent off the full adult ticket price.

A ride on the Singapore Flyer will be cheaper than one on the 135m-tall London Eye, which charges around $45 for an adult.

However, it will cost more than a ticket to Malaysia's observation wheel in Kuala Lumpur, called Eye on Malaysia. A ride on that 60m-tall wheel costs RM15 (S$6.60) for an adult.

A ride on the Singapore Flyer is also pricey compared to other attractions here: The Singapore Zoo charges $15 for adults and $7.50 for children; the 131m-tall Carlsberg Sky Tower on Sentosa, which also touts a breathtaking view, charges $10 per adult and $6 per child.

But with a year to go, interest in the wheel is already growing. Adval has received no fewer than 50 inquiries a month in the last three months.

Travel agents here and overseas have been looking to bundle the attraction in their tour packages and brochures. Requests to hold weddings and corporate events on board have also been flowing in.

Each of the 28 fully air-conditioned capsules on the Singapore Flyer can carry 35 people. Each capsule can be booked for private events from $1,000 onwards.

The prices were fixed following surveys among 500 consumers and local and overseas travel agents, said Ms Ong.

Pegged to make the project profitable from Day One, they will remain unchanged for at least a year, said Singapore Flyer's managing director Peter Purcell.

The company will launch its ticketing offers to travel agents at the Asean Tourism Forum this week.

Members of the public can make bookings from tomorrow.

The wheel, to sit just opposite the upcoming Marina Bay Sands integrated resort, will crown a three-storey mall. The retailers there have not been announced, but 60 per cent of its 80,000 sq ft will be devoted to food and beverage outlets, most of them with waterfront dining.

In the Singapore Flyer's first year, about $6 million will be spent on marketing it through advertisements and promotional events such as concerts.

When asked if the relatively low price was to play things safe in view of the closure of the Crazy Horse Revue, Mr Purcell dismissed the suggestion.

'I think it was the wrong product in this particular market,' he said.

omg 29.50 for adult, 20.65 for child. thats expensive for 37 min.

a family of 4 will cost 100 bucks and only 37 mins. maybe most locals will try it once and not go up again.

Its one of those things where you probably will go up once for the novelty, and more times if you're really into the views and experience...

Well at least 2 trips will be good: night time and day time.

When it opens next year people will probably rush to try it, and then 2 years later, the BFC, Integrated Resort & new Gardens will again be another opportunity to catch the ever-changing skyline:D

S'pore Flyer may rake in $70m in ticket sales

By Arthur Sim
Feb 2, 2007
The Business Times

UP TO 80 per cent of the Singapore Flyer's revenue is from ticket sales. And based on the 2.5 million visitors expected in the first year - at an average price of $29.50 - ticket sales could amount to at least $70 million.

However, the actual figure could be more. Revealing details about the giant Ferris wheel, director and shareholder Florian Bollen said revenue will also come from 80,000 sq ft of F&B and retail space that the management is now leasing out.

The $240 million Flyer is backed by European banks Delbrueck Bettmann Maffei (DBM), ABN Amro and Bayerishe Hypo und Vereinsbank (HVB Asia).

DBM, which is ABN Amro's German private banking arm, will provide equity of up to $100 million. The rest of the investment money will come from a five-year securitised bond tied to ticket sales for the 165 metre wheel and arranged by HVB Asia.

According to Mr Bollen, the return on the Flyer investment is expected to be higher than that from real estate, which is usually 6-10 per cent per annum.

With the Flyer considered an 'iconic development', the owners are also considering offers of corporate sponsorship in return for branding rights, Mr Bollen said. He could not say what form the branding will take, but 'we will make sure the advertising will be tasteful'.

Already showing interest in some form of exclusive tie-up is CIMB-GK Research. Prices for special Flyer packages were released yesterday - and CIMB chief executive Song Seng Wun was one of the first in line to discuss the possibility of being the wheel's first customer.

Corporate events are expected to account for a large part of the Flyer's business, with rates for booking a whole capsule starting at $1,000.

Entertaining corporate clients is an important part of business, so CIMB is looking to book a couple of exclusive days on the Flyer to 'offer clients different things'.

Mr Song, who is also CIMB's regional analyst, believes Singapore needs not just more visitors but more attractions - be they the Flyer or the integrated resorts.

By his estimate, the Singapore Tourism Board's target to attract 17 million visitors by 2015 is conservative as it projects annual growth of only 6-7 per cent, while growth in visitor numbers for this part of the world is closer to 8-10 per cent.

Whether these visitors will head for the SFlyer when it opens early next year will be the responsibility of Patsy Ong, managing director of Adval Brand Group, which is handling marketing and ticketing. Adval has started to take bookings, and judging from interest so far, Ms Ong says she is confident the first three months will soon be booked out.

I really like the thin-ness. Really removes the ugliness out of ferris wheels. And beneath the wheel is a ''rainforest right'', imagine looking down from the wheel to a huge green space. This really redefines a ferris wheel, except for the fact that it still is a wheel on a platform.

Anyone knows how the lattice tower is involved in construction? How did they get it slanted?

phenom
February 7th, 2007, 02:56 PM
Just to hazard a guess, the whole giant wheel when completed is to be held together by taut cables which will equalise each other in a full circle; forming the spokes that hold the rim. Before the circle is complete, some stiff structure is needed to temporarily hold the growing sectional arcs in place. Therefore that lattice tower.
Any structural/mechanical engineering expert out there to endorse or disprove my jerry theory?

Cliff
February 7th, 2007, 04:13 PM
Yeah, looks like it. I think the Wheel will be built from the lowest point, and with each completed section, the lattice tower will be raised until it returns to the starting point.

Though, with this very narrow frame, there seems to be almost no centrifugal force to counter the centripetal cables within. The structural calculations have to be alot more precise here, than that of the London Eye.

I pass by the Singapore Flyer everyday on the ECP and have noted that the wheel spokes are inching higher and moving counter-clockwise. I believe they are adding new beams to make the circumference from the base after pulling up the completed section from the top, thus making the spokes look like they are being moved counter-clockwise slowly but surely.

Singapore Flyer to attract in more ways than one
By Jasmine Yin, TODAY | Posted: 14 March 2007 1053 hrs

SINGAPORE: A panoramic sweep of Singapore's skyline and even parts of Malaysia may not be the only thing visitors take in when the Singapore Flyer opens next year.

They will be able to rub shoulders with wax models of celebrities like David Beckham, or even hop on a roller-coaster train, if plans to develop a second attraction at the 165-m-tall giant observation wheel take off.

TODAY understands that the Singapore Flyer management could hook up with the United Kingdom-based Tussauds Group, which owns the Madame Tussauds museum in cities such as New York and Hong Kong.

It is also behind the London Eye giant observation wheel — the top-paying tourist attraction in Britain — and a host of theme parks such as Alton Towers and the Chessington World of Adventures.

A source told this newspaper that both parties are in "serious talks" following a visit here last month by London Eye senior executives as part of a publicity tour in Asia.

When contacted, managing director for Singapore Flyer Peter Purcell said: "We are unable to comment regarding ongoing discussions."

Just last week, private equity firm Blackstone Group agreed to buy over the Tussauds Group for £1 billion ($2.95 billion) to create what is touted to be the world's second-biggest operator of tourist attractions, by visitor numbers, after Disney.

Blackstone's Merlin Entertainments Group operates the Legoland theme parks in Denmark and Germany and Italy's biggest theme park Gardaland, among other attractions.

Meanwhile, Mr Purcell said construction of the Singapore Flyer is ahead of schedule and that he has received offers from 23 bidders who are interested in leasing space.

In fact, one bidder is even proposing to take up the entire ground floor. But Mr Purcell said: "We are not in a mad rush to sign leases."

He added that credit card, alcohol and hi-tech bigwigs have approached him to sponsor and co-brand the Singapore Flyer, in the mould of the British Airways London Eye.

As for the $300-million Singapore Oceanarium proposal that he and a consortium of local and foreign investors had pitched last year, Mr Purcell said that it is still pending a decision from the authorities.

The authorities have suggested two sites outside of Marina Bay for the proposal, with at least one site in the East Coast.

He reiterated his desire to anchor what he described as an "edu-tourism" proposal in Singapore, but did not rule out other offers of interest the consortium has had from the Middle East, the United States and even Brazil.

Asked about the recent tremors felt in Singapore following two earthquakes in Sumatra, Mr Purcell said the Flyer's structure was not affected.

He said: "The design capacity of a structure of this type is pretty fantastic because it's designed to last 100 years. Our engineers from Arup have assured us that all the safeguards for any sort of natural phenomenon have been taken into account." - TODAY/fa

Madame Tussauds museum + roller-coaster cum Theme Park.

Singapore Flyer to attract in more ways than one

Our engineers from Arup have assured us that all the safeguards for any sort of natural phenomenon have been taken into account." - /fa

Nice, another theme park..

but 165m? "165-m-tall giant observation wheel take off"

It should be 165m high, not 178m. About the height of a 42 floors building.

"Each capsule will be fitted with the latest cooling system and will be supported by a back-up air conditioning system together with a solid roof. At 165 metres high, the cool comfort of passengers is further ensured by fitting the capsules with UV protection to shield them from the blazing Singapore sun."

They have just completed the 5th boom out of 7 by this morning.

Yes. I think in the next few weekends, there should be Open House for "for sale" units, so try to visit. Meraprime roof top also have a barbecue area. Can also go up there to look at Singapore Flyer.

The Singapore Flyer can be seen from many parts of Singapore. The difference is how far/near for a clearer view of it.

The Meraprime view of The Singapore Flyer is near enough to make a visual impact on the mind. I guess it will need a picture to show what the view is like. Any Meraprime owner care to post here?

Once they finish the wheel they can remove the lattice booms... Then they have to hang all the cabins in there... Then probably a lot of testing to be done. Then we can go and take pics, hehehe :-)

What a coincidence ... I was there too but "walked" together with them to Kolam Ayer during my upper secondary.

I have seen the new Siglap Link VS campus .... its a really nice place now to be near the sea and with student hostels.

You think they can suspend the whole wheel just by cables and later remove all the booms? That was what they depicted in their renderings but I thought the real wheel would still be supported with booms.
