View Full Version : Superpolis + SKP = Group Project???
lionchild January 3rd, 2007, 07:59 AM Superpolis + SKP = Group Project???
I was just checking out the old superpolis project section, and appears that it is dead, for a long while. Now it;s 2007, and there is possibility that a superpolis like project could be around the corner!
Now that Sketchup is free, and that allot of users here have the awesome 3D program, and most also have good talent with it, why not combine the superpolis concept with Sketchup? It would be another great group project for SCC, and could also let us all show off our designing talent, or just get more familiar with the program.
I was just making a few examples of this possibility the other day, and came up with these:
This picture is similar to the map thread for superpolis, of course, it can be alter easily with more additions to it from SCC members, since it would be a big file, members would DL the basic plot map, and then add in custom content as it is created. This would prevent users having to update everyday, their entire map.
http://premium1.uploadit.org/starrdarcy//metroproject1.jpg
The second picture is a the actual map, the blocks can be number and zoned to whatever people may wish, unless otherwise marked. Members can simple claim a large section, then develop it as they wish. There is already buildings there, however, they are just mostly run down industrial buildings, or empty land. Those buildings can be cleared to make way for development and parks. Civic and government buildings can be placed as well.
http://premium1.uploadit.org/starrdarcy//metroproject2.jpg
This picture shows up some of the possibilities of doing a superpolis-like project in Sketchup. There is allot of detail that can be made in these models, and members can make a model to whatever specs and detail they want. I have made a basic park, and a 7 story residential / mixed use building in this picture to demonstrate. I added in a few people and shading, and you got a damn good scene going :D
http://premium1.uploadit.org/starrdarcy//metroproject3.jpg
The last pictures is more eye candy. Members who are in this game or project, can take as much time to develop their land, and do not have to build up the entire block if not needed. Members can also annex more land if they build up their blocks too.
http://premium1.uploadit.org/starrdarcy//metroproject4.jpg
Eventually, in a example like this, in the event that all usable block are used up, the map can be expand in any direction, like SimCity! Just make some new roads, terrain, and blocks, and more land will be available. A city council could also be made a few members who wish to see some "planning" being involved in a project like this. Other ideas could be a city name and or district dtyles with buildings having a distinct character or feel.
This would be a good opportunity for SCC members tosgow off there talent and make a city scape that we really want, and at the same time a group project. I think it could be somethign that can be done in the next few months!
(BTW, the buildings don't have to be grew, and the floor sizes can be debated!)
I will post some more examples of this idea later on, with a few more reasons how it can be great project!

Goothrey January 3rd, 2007, 09:27 PM Can your computer handle the detail that this project will bring?
lionchild January 4th, 2007, 06:26 AM Can your computer handle the detail that this project will bring?
The one thing that can be done to prevent peoples comps from crashing is that several blocks can be worked on separately, and then the finished blocks can be pasted into the larger model, which is what i am doing here:
http://premium1.uploadit.org/starrdarcy//metroproject5.jpg
I don't have to open up the larger map to edit, just do one or two blocks at a time and then import to the larger map. Of course, the larger map will get more slower to navigate within as more models are added. I would suggest members to keep a tab on the detail, as some of us don't have the same equipment!
3tmk January 4th, 2007, 06:42 AM ^^as he said, it's done block by block
It's not a bad idea, but I've refrained from using sketchup, I've heard that if you post your creations they can be taken as property of the company or something like that, lol, and I already avoid emporis because of their policy on photographies.
Anyway, it's a nice idea that could work if people are willing to get more into sketchup, because when you compare the two, paint is much easier to handle and universal to all. Also, I tried my hand back in the days to create buildings for sc4, then using sketchup, and I have to say, paint is much easier to handle and you can be much more creative with it than sketchup, because with paint you can create exactly what illusion you want on one face, and not care about the back, lol
Goothrey January 4th, 2007, 07:34 AM Very true. I have noticed that when I download a model from google sketchup, the computer runs smoothly. But when I explode the component, the computer becomes slower.

Some good points, paint is easier to use. However, some might like to see their works in a true 3D realm and see how their creations react with others. There is pros and cons to both paint and SKP.
I think for now, instead of major project, i smaller little city could be started and members can add their models as they wish. Mind you, with SKP, an outline with of a real life city. Portland comes to mind, it can be easily made into a Sketchup map. Maybe something like an island that can be filled up or something.

In regards to the actually models themselves, there is no need to worry about copyrighted material as long as you don't copy a protected model down to it's every detail, nor use a pirated copy of SKP to make protected models. One can copy right SKP models, it has been done before many times.
Goothrey January 4th, 2007, 10:19 AM I will give you 3 thumbs up if you put in an elevated highway with on-ramps.
CessTenn January 4th, 2007, 07:24 PM Man! this is neat...
lionchild January 4th, 2007, 07:39 PM I will give you 3 thumbs up if you put in an elevated highway with on-ramps.
On which map? the one i made as a sampler? Okay, that can be arranged :D
Anyways, perhaps a smaller project would be best for now.
FlyingDutchman January 5th, 2007, 01:08 AM Great idea.
I'd like to put my work on it
Joey313 January 5th, 2007, 09:20 AM so how do i add building
lionchild January 6th, 2007, 05:24 AM Okay, well i am going to start on a smaller project for a few of us members to add their buildings too. another superpolis project right now would not be a good idea, with this smaller project, we can see if it really works, and see the pros and cons of using SKP for this kind of work.
Oak City
So this new mini superpolis prject will give members with basic to advanced SKP members to add in their own models to a fictional city. This will allow SSC members to see their creations in the city setting, and get a chance to build together. This simple city already has buildings in at, however, like before, they are temporary, and can be demolished for new buildings. This city is on peninsula, with lots of water front lots.
Here is several pics of the city core.

http://img.mypicgallery.com/oakcity/oakcity-1.jpg
I am using podium, a SKP plugin to render city maps, and also individual models to see what it would look in a different view. I'm sure the renderings will look much better when more models are placed with it.

If you are interested in placing your SKP model, or developing several blocks within this city, please reply or send me a pm and the city model will be sent to you. There is a few dimensions that members should take note: the model units are in meters, floors should be between 4 to 5 meters tall. The blocks are 64x64 meters. I will give you the details once you PM me or reply back here.
I will give you 3 thumbs up if you put in an elevated highway with on-ramps.
Well it's not the same map, however, here is an example of a elavated highway. Personal, i would want to see it underground in a tunnel. So here you go!

Joey313 January 7th, 2007, 12:07 AM so what are those grey buildings for
lionchild January 7th, 2007, 03:58 AM so what are those grey buildings for
Mostly just for a backdrop, and for a simulation of other city buildings. The grey buildings are just here to create a scene of a city. Something like this:
http://img.mypicgallery.com/oakcity/oakcity-7.jpg
Joey313 January 7th, 2007, 09:25 AM ok so how exaclty do i add my building i have a couple of towers
mrbrett January 8th, 2007, 05:46 AM I might be interested. Sounds fun. Can you post the template of the city?
FlyingDutchman January 8th, 2007, 02:49 PM i'm interesseted but i can't pm you ;)
because you turned it off
lionchild January 8th, 2007, 09:00 PM i'm interesseted but i can't pm you ;)
because you turned it off
Hmm, i am in the user CP, and my private mesaages are enabled. I better talk to the admin on this one. Anyways, you can send an email to lion.child @ hotmail . com for now.
I think what would work best is that i send the overal plan (the map) to all those who are interested, then once members have their buildings ready, they can attatch their models to a reply here and we can dl them and import them into our map (instead od dling the entire map again).
Also, perhaps i should number the blocks too, just to make it easier to organise. Members can also make parks and parking lots to add to the map if they want too.
Also, i should mention that you do not have to add lots of detail, if you want, just make sure that we can see windows, and the overal concept of the building / park.
Joey313 January 9th, 2007, 01:23 AM ^^Can i have the map
my emial is ramos.joey@sbcglobal.net
lionchild January 9th, 2007, 09:04 AM ^^
Sure, I am just finalizing a few details on the map, and adding more textures. There is going to be red areas on the map, that just means parcels that have been claimed. I have been busy making a few buildings for the map, also, a few parcels like the park, from the old map will make an appearance too. Here are some creations i have finished:
http://img.mypicgallery.com/oakcity/oakcity-9.jpg
I know what you are all thinking, it's not really serious, however, it's about the concept.
http://img.mypicgallery.com/oakcity/oakcity-8.jpg
A few things to remember while making a building for this map
-Floors are between 4 and 5 meters, your choice.
-City block are usually 64x64 meters.
-Detail is up too you!
-Please reserve your blocks for yourself (once plot map is up)
-when shareing your model, only send the model, not the entire map :)
Thanks, map should be ready by tomorrow.
Jayskyline January 10th, 2007, 09:13 AM Can somebody tell me how to add the streets on the sketchup
i would love to do that with my skycrapers
mrbrett January 11th, 2007, 03:01 AM ^^

lionchild January 11th, 2007, 03:39 AM It's tommorow? :)
Thanks, sorry for the delay! I sent it too you. I think we will beed a place to host this file, it's only 3.6 mb, but it's rather slow to send it always via email. Any ideas?
Good news, i managed to upload the file to my website:
http://lionchild.squarespace.com/oak-city-development/
Joey313 January 11th, 2007, 04:32 AM how tall can the building be?? so when we download the file can we just choose any spot want to build???????????????????????
Joey313 January 11th, 2007, 04:40 AM i have some buildings complete
can we build historic buildings
Joey313 January 12th, 2007, 05:26 AM It's tommorow? :)
its tommorow again :)
lionchild January 12th, 2007, 05:47 AM its tommorow again :)
The file can be found in the above reply. Anyways, i wanted to say that buildings should be no taller than 60 floors for now, and you can choose any block or parcel, as long as you do not claim the red ones. The green ones can be for your parks and rec areas.
Joey313 January 13th, 2007, 02:22 AM i have a block complete do i post the pic on here
www.sercan.de January 14th, 2007, 06:52 PM i have made this city (used the historicla peninsula of Istanbul)
