Over the last decade a silent revolution has swept through Bangladesh's cities, towns and villages. We already have threads on the major cities so this one will concentrate on the smaller districts, aside their natural beauty, we can also post their development work.

Anyway, here is the Islamic University of Kushtia in Kushtia district.

Pabna is a city in the west-central region of Bangladesh. It is also the biggest city of the Pabna district. It is located on the Padma river (Ganges) and has a population of 138,000. Hardinge Bridge, a steel railway bridge over the Padma located near Pabna is a link between western and northern Bangladesh. Before partition of British India, it used to be a big rail stop for the Assam and Darjeeling bound trains from Calcuttta. Pabna has the biggest Mental Hospital in the country.

It is a major industrial area, especially in textiles. It also holds the remains of the Hindu Temple of Jor Bangla.

Barisal (Bengali: বরিশাল) is a city in southern Bangladesh. The city lies in the Padma (Ganges) River delta on an offshoot of the Kirtonkhola River.

Due to its location and easy access to both riverine and marine navigation channels, it has become a transshipment center for rice, hides, and pulses. Bakery, textile, pharmaceutical products are output of a few industrial installation. It is linked by steamer with Dhaka (73 miles [117 km] north) and with Chittagong to the southeast. Road communication improved in last decade with building of few bridges.

The city is also home to some of the country's most prestigious colleges including Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital, Barisal Medical College (est. 1889), Barisal BM College and Oxford Mission High School (est. 1990).

Tractors are quickly replacing the traditional use of bulls for ploughing. As a result Bangladesh has yielded several bumper crops over the last few years.

Cox's Bazar getting ready to host first ever SAARC car rally

The district administration is taking all-out preparation to host the first-ever SAARC Car Rally-2007, which begins from Cox's Bazar Thursday.

The rally, touching all the SAARC member countries in a stretch of over 8,000 kilometres, will conclude on April 14.

Chief Adviser to the Caretaker Government Fakhruddin Ahmed is expected to inaugurate the month-long car rally to demonstrate commonalties among the SAARC member countries.

Participants from all the seven countries will arrive here today (Tuesday).

Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation has already imported 26 Safari jeeps, provided by Indian Tata Company, in cooperation with Nitol Motors. The jeeps were brought from Benapole port under tight security.

Four personalities from each field of literature, culture, sports and film and four persons from print and electronic media of the SAARC countries will take part in the rally.

Meanwhile, the local administration is cleaning up the roads, lanes and drains of the town and the authorities are painting the walls of the stadium and different hotels and motels.

District Administration will also organise a seminar titled 'Apar Sombhabanar Cox's Bazar' at a local cultural centre Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner M Aminul Islam said that security has been tightened in the town ahead of the SAARC car rally.

According to a handout, the rally will be organised in line with the decisions of the heads of state or government of the SAARC countries at the 13th SAARC summit held in Dhaka on November 12-13 in 2005.

Sylhet would be 3rd.

tanzirian
March 15th, 2007, 03:23 AM
The list is not accurate beyond #3. Sylhet would be in the top 10; I don't think it is 3rd though. Some places like Cox's Bazar would not be in the list. And other places like Narayanganj are often included as part of the population of Dhaka when greater metro areas are calculated (as opposed to municipal populations).

tanzirian
March 15th, 2007, 05:31 AM
This is the ranking according to World Gazeteer. Although the actual numbers can be debated, I believe this ranking to be essentially accurate. Historically, Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, and Rajshahi are the four divisional capitals and remain the largest cities by a significant margin. Two more divisional capitals at Sylhet and Barisal were recently created for largely political reasons. Although development in Sylhet outpaces that of cities other than Dhaka, it is not the 3rd largest city to best of my knowledge. Greater Comilla district is one of the most densely populated areas in Bangladesh, which is why it is so high on this list, being the main urban center of that region.

1. Dhaka
2. Chittagong
3. Khulna
4. Rajshahi
5. Comilla
6. Sylhet
7. Mymensingh
8. Rangpur
9. Narsingdi
10. Barisal

Unfortunately I will not get to go BD this year...earlier this year when my parents were thinking of going there was talk of taking a trip to Pabna which is my mother's "desh." However when I do visit next time (next winter maybe) I will try to take a trip there and take some photos.

looks like tareq travels quite a bit. probably, he can take some puctures of other towns.

Though I dont (have to) travel that much usually, I did quite a lot in last one month. I touched Tetulia on 17th Oct and Teknaf (and St. Martin's Island) on 7 Nov. From 15-19 Oct I traveled:
Dhaka-Tangail-Shirajgong-Bogra-Rangpur-Gaibandha-Dinajpur-Thakurgaon-Panchagarh (Tetulia Tea gardens)-Dhaka
But I stayed for night only in Rangpur. Why no pics? Sorry to disappoint you folks- most of the districts are bypassed now by new roads made within last few years. I mean there is a bypass road for almost every district now. So if you are heading to Panchagarh from Dhaka, you will be passing by Tangail, Sirajgonj, Bogra, Rangpur,Gaibandha, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon towns while crossing these districts. But you will cross only Bogra city and bypass all other. So you'll be going through a sea of vast and beautiful paddy fields, rivers and ponds all the way except the Bogra city part.
Yes I'm back from St. Martins and I got around a hundred pictures for you. I'll be posting them as soon as I get some time to sort, upload and post. So stay tuned!:)

One thing caught my attention, look at the appearance of the people in Lalmanirhat station. Lalmanirhat is one of the less developed regions yet I would say poverty has waned in some extent and income and economic development reached (in some extent) in heartland of Bangladesh. There has been report in what extent poverty has been reduced in last 5-10 years in rural Bangladesh. I will post it if I find it.

North Bengal had development during both Zia and Ershad. imo North Bengal needs more attention.

North had been behind other regions. Apart from Ershad time, last elected govt had taken and implemented quite a few development programs. We have seen medical college, railway station and district level development. I would like to mention few others

1) There has been program underway (by last BNP govt) to supply gas to Rajsahi region. This program will sure expedite industrialization in north and north-western region. Just a note - Bogra already has gas supply.

2) A new EPZ has been started in Ishwardi during last elected govt and paved way for huge employment.

3) Boropukuria coal fired power plant started production and supplying 210MW (with interruption) to northern region also lessening pressure in national grid.

4) Road and communication infrastructure in northeren region has vastly developed by all govt since Ershad time. If I recall correctly only donor funded project worth $300 million spent on highway development.

5) Panchagorah (by private initiative) has turned out to be a very promising tea growing region. Last Govt has taken initiative to grow orange and preliminary results are encouraging.

6) Bengal meat in Pabna only meat exporting company in Bangladesh.

7) Grameen-Dannon joint venture nutrition project (in progress) will be in Bogra. This project in one hand will encourage dairy farming in the region and on the other it will supply nutrition for less fortunate children.
……………………..

There is no doubt much much more to be done and hope is next govt will continue on developing north.

Although this story might have been better in the "Foreign Investments" Section, I preferred this section because it is primarily focused on developing a minor city.

B'desh To Expedite The Process Of Building Hi-tech Park

The government is preparing to float an international tender for construction of the hi-tech business park in Gazipur in an effort to breathe new life into the much delayed project.

The park on a 230-acre site at Kaliakoir was first proposed in 2002 but so far work has only started on the administrative buildings and basic roads.

The decision to seek international bidders for the project was taken last week at a meeting of officials of the Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology.

The meeting was also attended by officials from the World Bank who have agreed to compile a report on the development of science parks in other Asian countries.

"We had a very fruitful meeting with the World Bank," said a ministry official, adding, "The government wants to have the involvement of an international company who has expertise of doing such work before the first phase of construction is completed."

The first phase work, which includes administrative office, roads and utilities, is scheduled to complete by Dec 2008.

Asked about any assurance regarding financial assistance from the World Bank, he said, "At this moment we don't know but we will have to have sufficient fund when the park work starts."

The estimated cost of the entire project is 2.51 billion taka (US$36.68 million) according to the master plan of the project. The government is seeking financial assistance, said the science and ICT ministry sources adding it is yet to decide either it fund by the government or partnership with donors.

Earlier in 2005, Malaysia's hi-tech park authority--Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC)--had expressed keen interest to establish the park's infrastructure similar to Malaysia's 'Multimedia Super Corridor' and submitted a final study paper to the government in August 2005.

"But that proposal was dumped due to political interference," said a high official of science and ICT ministry.

Aiming to create conducive atmosphere for establishing ICT, engineering, electronics, telecommunications, biotechnology and some other related knowledge based industries, the science and ICT ministry sketched a plan in 2002 to set up the hi-tech park. Later, the science and ICT ministry got 231 acres of land at Kaliakoir in April 2004 to set up the park.

Earlier, the Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation (BTRC) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) conducted a project formulation study in 2001.

According to the master plan, the park is divided into five blocks and will be developed in different phases.

Kamal Uddin Ahmed, project director, said India, Viet Nam, and even Nepal have such parks, which are helping them get huge foreign direct investment.

"If we build the park, it will be a hub for both national and international investors," he said.

According to the science and ICT ministry, some renowned companies such as Microsoft, Dell, and Intel have showed their interest to open their outsourcing offices in the park.

International investment consultancy firm McKinsey and Co predicts that the demand for outsourcing services will reach $180 billion in 2010.

India earns about $12.5 billion annually from information technology outsourcing and revenues are growing at 30 per cent per year. More than half of Fortune 500 firms outsource some parts of their work to India.

"Therefore, certainly we also have the chance to get the big information technology market," Ahmed said adding that about 6,000 graduates will get a chance to work in different hi-tech sectors in the park.

Someday you can come to Dhaka and see the car situation and the infrastructure -- which I would compare to the top four cities in India (but much more crowded because of an oversupply of cars and a lack of public mass-transports). More like Bangkok ten/fifteen years ago...

I like the entrance to the Sonali Bank building...I don't think it looks dated (keep in mind that the photo likely only is showing the gate). It's based on traditional architectural queues...which is often the case in West where banks not uncommonly use classical European motifs to convey image of stability. All that aside it's nice for me that not every office building is a wall of blue glass.

Hey man, you do realize that India is approximately 20 times the size of Bangladesh with 10 times more population. So if we have 2 Big cities(Dhaka and Chittagong), India should have atleast around 25-30 decent size cities with modern infrastructure.

A better way to assess the condition would be to compare one state of India (West Bengal, Punjab or Maharashtra) to Bangladesh. That way we can justify how many cities/ towns have proper infrastructure and the pace of modernization.

The small town pics shown in this thread are not even second tier cities of Bangladesh. After Dhaka and Chittagong, second grade town will be upcoming city like Sylhet which is going through rapid development.

I don't know what is Banglavision is, but this a regular show on Channel-i. Don't know the name or when it is aired (day/time). I've seen it on and off, probably on weekends, I'd say late morning or afternoon (ET). I find it interesting in that the voice over i.e. the narrator is not the same person who is the guide taking you through the trip. Probably because his voice and the manner in which he speaks, isn't sophisticated enough.

The building itself looks colonial era but the "bangladesh flag" decoration on the right is of course more recent...interestingly the border of the "flag" is made to look like one of the arches of the building, even including the decorative piece (I forget what it's called) on the top of the arch...a nice touch I think, and one that doesn't interfere with the building's design.

Not many of the buildings are new. Castle Salam was there when I visited Khulna way back 7-8 years earlier- the prawn there is good, locally caught.

Sadly, the Khulna region has been largely left out of the boom that Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet areas went through.

What a nice roundabout. Don't you think life is more peaceful in these mofoshshol towns compared to Dhaka? There are more open spaces and even if the electricity situation is bad, at least the breeze will keep you cool. I believe if development is spread around instead of concentrating on Dhaka, the country will be more livable and progress much quickly.

Couldn't agree more. My first ever trip to Rajshahi last year, made me realize how lopsided the infrastructural development has been taking place in Bangladesh. Development and Dhaka has become synonymous. Except for a token few in Chittagong, everything is in Dhaka. That too, within Dhaka metro area, not much else outside.

While the streets of Dhaka are clogged with automobiles, you can count them with your fingers elsewhere, say for Rajshahi as an example.

The same is true for Feni. It is a very livable city without the craziness of Dhaka(Joynal Hazari period not withstanding :ohno:). My father is building a house there and thinking of moving permanently from Uttara. You guys have all seen the traffic mess in Uttara in one of the posted photos. ^^ I am with the same opinion aswell. I think initially Chittagong and Sylhet should be focused as the next hubs outside of Dhaka. Chittagong because it's the port city with decent facilities like the International airport. Also, with the Dhaka-Chittagong highway project implemented, it should have good connectivity with the capital. All these will make things easier for the businesses to shift.

Sylhet also has the potential to grow, simply because of the expatriate Sylhets in UK. They have lot of idle money in banks and real state, some of which can be attracted towards manufacturing units and service sector. Also the tea gardens make it an ideal tourist spot.

This is all well and true Sylheti's have a lot of money in banks and a lot of them want's to invest in BD but the government failed to provide any facilities or any sort of help for expats to start up businesses. This topic was discussed in channel S a couple of months ago and a lot of Sylheti expats complained in the live phone-in show that not enough was done by the government to accommodate Sylheti's in any ways for investment in BD; in fact some of them were even discouraged by officials and went as far as saying not to invest and instead take the money and return to UK.

^^ The best way around this is for Sylhetis to establish themselves as a stronger influence within the political parties themselves. Our political system may be unsavory but it must be the conduit if Sylhet wishes to become the third city of BD. Sylhet took a big step with divisional status...next would be an EPZ and greater development of educational infrastructure. There seemed to be movement towards an EPZ some years ago but haven't heard too much recently...makes me think the only reason for this not going forward is lack of political clout.

It isn't as if there aren't enough politicians from Sylhet in both of the major political parties. Moreover, people from Sylhet, to my mind, should naturally carry big sway in the political system, owing to the large voting group that has significant financial clout owing to the expatriate community.

Certainly, Sylhet is third in terms of architectural development (maybe even second). However, I have the feeling (and I may be wrong), that overall, Sylhet has not yet established itself clearly as the "third city" of the country, over older and more populous divisional capitals like Rajshahi and Khulna. More investment in manufacturing and education should change this. A dedicated EPZ would be a good first step.

Sylhet is well on its way to becoming the third city of Bangladesh- when I went there around 5 years ago- most of the locals were of Sylheti origin but this time there were many more non-Sylhetis there, the city has become more populated; traffic is still ok but its sort of clear that it will be pretty bad in a year or two since the roads are very narrow- now is the time to take action but then again we can hardly expect things as such from our government.

However electricity is the biggest problem. The so called "grame biddut deya hocche dekhe shohorer manushder ektu koshto korte hobe" thing is a big lie. My grandmother had to travel 1 hour just to get to the town area in order to get her cell phone charged. There was only 2 hrs of electricity in the village during her 3 day stay.

Currently we have 9 hour loadshedding in Dhaka, its an all time never before seen record. The utmost maximum we used to have on the rarest of occasions was 6, electricity is the biggest problem right now.

Maybe on the way but still not there. Khulna is still the 3rd biggest city in terms of population and area.

^^ When talking about "third city" I think of various factors...including population and population growth, industrial base and job opportunities, architecture and infrastructure, educational and cultural opportunities, etc. I think Chittagong is clearly the "second city" not just because of population but because of the importance of its port and because of having the largest EPZ in the country. At this point I don't think Bangladesh has a clear "third city." Khulna is third most populous but has languished in other aspects of development.

One would expect the Sylhet Municipal corporation to take up such infrastructure enhancement projects.

Here is an extract from a very interesting article (bit old) on Sylhet.
‘The amount of idle money lying with the commercial banks in Sylhet as deposits is about 4,000 crore taka, which is not common in the rest of Bangladesh.
During the fiscal year of 2005-06 the flow of foreign Remittances rose by 25 percent to $4.8 billion which have been sent mostly by expatriates of Sylheti origin in the UK. That amount is expect to increase to $5.5 billion in 2007 with the government's attention toward supervising and monitoring banks.
The Bangladesh government has taken steps to set up a special Export Processing Zone(EPZ) in Sylhet in order to attract foreign investors, notably non-resident Bangladeshis living abroad. Such include people from Sylheti origin that reside in the UK. The plan comes as an initiative toward stimulating the ongoing investment that has already taken place in Sylhet as well as providing a basis towards long-term investment to turn Sylhet into a major economic hub.
Investments by British-Bangladeshis led the way for two additional privately owned airlines, Royal Bengal Airlines and United Airways (Bangladesh), to launch services in 2007. The investment is regarded to serve the Sylheti population living in the UK. Air Sylhet is another British-Bangladeshi owned UK airline that hopes to launch services in 2007’.

Airlines business isn't a good business to make money. They ought to invest in other industries that will help to build up the infrastructure of Bangladesh, both physical and economic.

Actualy Sylhet is the third largest city in Bangladesh after Dhaka and Chittagong. Both Rajshahi and Khulna have more population than Sylhet but that is because both these cities cover a very large area most of which is rural whereas the Sylhet City Corporation boundry which covers only 26 sq km does not even cover the whole built up urban area of Sylhet city.

If you look at Google Earth pictures of these 3 cities you will see that the built of area of Sylhet city is around 30%-40% bigger than Khulna or Rajshahi.

However I must concede that although Sylhet is full of high rise buidings and looks like a proper city its road infrastructre is very poor compared to Rajshai or Khulna.

When people speak of "largest" cities they generally refer to population, not land area. This can refer to either the municipal population or to the population of the greater metropolitan area (for me, the latter is a much better measure...as municipal boundaries are arbitrary). However there is no doubt that Sylhet is the third most developed city of Bangladesh.

Generally speaking the size of cities are measured by their populations and not land area and this is very much true in developed countries however I find that in a fast developing country like Bangladesh bare population figures can be extremely misleading. Let me give you one example the land area of Rajshahi metropolitan city is 377 sq km which is the size of an average Bangladeshi upazilla and more than the area of Dhaka city corporation which is around 360 sq km. However, the actual built up urban area of Rajshahi city is at most 30 sq km. The rest all 343 sq km of it is rural just like any other rural area of Bangladesh. Therefore, when we see population figures of 800,000 to 900,000 for Rajshahi city bandied about in various mediums we must remember that the true city population is perhaps no more than 250,000to 300,000. And it is not just Rajshahi city the population figures for 95% of towns and cities in Bangladesh are misleading because the figures include very large rural populations. Sylhet is one notable exception where actual built up urban area is larger than the city corporation boundary which is a mere 26 sq km.

^^ Certainly if that's the case your point is well taken.

In terms of municipalities exceeding urban area there are some equivalents here in the US...I am not 100% certain, but I believe that Juneau, Alaska is the largest municipality overall and Jacksonville, Florida the largest in the lower 48 states...but of course in general nobody is thinking of those as being among the country's "largest" cities.

Delta Life Insurance Company Ltd signed a contract with National Development Engineers Ltd for the construction of 21 storied Delta Life Tower at Bogra.

The signing ceremony took place at Delta Life head office at Uttara Bank Bhaban in Motijheel in the city.

It is expected that the construction of the building would facilitate the development of Bogra and northern region as well.

Delta Life Managing Director Das Deba Prashad and National Development Managing Director Engineer Mostafizur Rahman signed the contract on behalf of their respective organisations.

Delta Life Chairman Syed Moazzem Hussain, Building and Business Development Committee Chairman of the company Nurul Huda, other directors and senior officials from both the organisations were present at the contract signing ceremony.

^^ Would be the tallest building in the northern divisions, no?

Why Bogra though? I understood the investment in that city during BNP era, but what connection / interest does Delta have in Bogra?

^^ I know that Bogra is the a pretty economically active town. It is probably the most industrial town in the north (they even have a branch of Bangladesh Bank there). That's probably why Delta Life is building that building there.

Hmm, I don't know why photobucket wouldn't let you register...you might try another site like flickr. Personally I'm not aware of other ways to display images.

Can someone be kind enough to provide answers to the following questions:
(1) Selling price for a new apartment (in sqft) in segunbagicha in Thopkana Road near the press club.
(2) Rental price for the above.
(3) Likely capital appreciation.
Thanks in advance.

If you want to post pictures, then get an account...they are free.

Also I have not heard of anyone else being denied a photobucket account...so you might revisit that process and try to figure out why.
