Hello friends.

This fall, my cousin in Greece started her university studies at the University of Western Makedonia in Kozani. Kozani (Greek: Κοζάνη), is a city in northern Greece, capital of Kozani Prefecture. It is located in the western part of Macedonia. The city lies 710 meters above sea level, 15 kilometers north-west of the lake Polyfytos, 120 km south-west of Thessaloniki, between the mountains Pieria, Vermio, Bourinos and Askio.

Kozani is the home of the Technological Educational Institute of West Macedonia and the department of Energy Management of the University of West Macedonia, with about 10,000 students from all over Greece and other places.

One of the most important aspects of local folklore is Kozani's carnival at the end of the winter, which retains much of the profanity of the ancient Dionysiac cult.

My cousin's descriptions of this city include words such as "beautiful", "alpine", "green", "fun", and many other positive words.

I have never been to Kozani but I have been to parts of Wetsern Macedonia and I can validate her claims of how green and alpine many of its areas are.

Below are some pictures of Kozani.

You are welcome my friend!

In addition, she tells me that due to the large number of university students the night life is really good. She says the bars, cafes, and restaurants are packed on the weekends and most nights of the week too.

...and all that in the best possible atmosphere and without the hype that one meets in the Athenian clubs too... You can have the time of your life in these cities as a student if you have the brains to acclimate yourself and not behave lika a "big city boy" (αυτό που στα Ελληνικά λέμε "να μην το πάιζεις πρωτευουσιάνος")

Xenia hotel to be restored to it’s former glory

An agreement has been reached to restore Kozani’s Xenia hotel that was designed by Aris Konstantinidis.

Some pictures of the current state of the hotel be found here:

http://www.omikron.tv/magazine/index.php/afieromata/99-2008-06-20-09-52-44

Hope they do something with the colours of this building. Can not imagine that it originally looked like this.

LOL

I do not like the building either. Some of the buidlings that Konstantinidis designed for EOT look nice. This one does not. Hope that the renovation will turn this building into a beauty.

Hotel Xenia in Kalambaka was designed by Konstantinidis as well!...they kinda look similar with the one in Kozani, and everyone is crazy about restoring the Hotel, back to its previous glory ;P..pretty much a similar story to Kozani's Xenia...This is the one in Kalambaka:

I don't think that Konstantinidis designed them like that. They look like Technical scool buildings...Awful colours...
