RIFFA, Bahrain - Italian Serie A leaders Inter Milan arrived Tuesday night in Bahrain and held their first training session at Bahrain Stadium in Riffa, south of Manama, ahead of their friendly game Saturday against the Gulf island national team.
Inter squad began practice shortly after most of the players arrived on a private jet.
Luis Figo and Dejan Stankovic, who arrived directly from Dubai, and Fabian Carini, Julio Cesar, Maicon, Maxwell and Santiago Solari, who arrived from Frankfurt, also joined the hour-long training session.
The squad began with warm-up exercises and carried out technique and ball possession drills before finishing with a practice match in relatively cold weather by Bahrain standards, with the temperature hovering around 11 degrees Celsius.
Ivan Cordoba, Fabio Grosso, Fabian Carini, Julio Cesar, Maicon, Maxwell and Santiago Solari had an aerobic session during the training, while Alvaro Recoba had therapy treatment.
The Inter squad plans to hold two training sessions daily until Friday.
The match, which is part of Bahrain Football Association’s (BFA) 50th-anniversary celebration, is being taken seriously, according to Inter coach and former Italian international Roberto Mancini.
“We take these five days here very seriously because we need to train, and this match will be very helpful to us when we start the season,” Mancini told a press conference following his team’s first training session.
“On Saturday we will face the local national team with the maximum seriousness and effort. We know Bahrain very well. They are a good national team who just missed out on qualifying for the recent World Cup in Germany, losing only to Trinidad & Tobago in the playoffs. We also know how good their coach is.”
The Inter boss said that he was happy with the fact that his team was resuming its training in ideal weather conditions.
Mancini denied rumours that Luis Figo will transfer to Emirates al-Ittihad and that Real Madrid’s David Beckham would transfer to Inter.
Inter will face Empoli in the first leg of Tim Cup quarter-final on January 9 in its first competitive clash of 2007.
I wasnt aware they were coming to bahrain till today! I was in the ritz having dinner and the next thing I know Figo passes by in front of me! I was like
