I propose that we all start a photo gallery that features Clear, High Resolution, and Tasteful pictures taken from around the Kingdom's capital city, Riyadh.

I do not expect this thread to catch fire, but I do hope that it will gradually grow and be filled with photographs of architecture from around the capital.

I was once told that some of Saudi Arabia's "architectural masterpieces stand behind 20 foot walls"...I think we all know that Saudi Arabia's sprawling suburbs are crowded with elegant houses, so feel free to post pictures of any houses you think are attention grabbing.

Photos of anyting are welcome. Houses, shopping malls, office buildings, restaurants, hotels, anything, all I ask is that they be photos taken by you or someone you know, tastefully taken (and by that I mean, NOT lopsided from a speeding car).

I know I'm asking for a lot, but I think this would be a nice addition, and maybe it would eventually be made into a sticky.

Saudi Guy: The name of the building with the pyramid shaped structure (triangle) on the edge is: Sky Towers, its was completed about a year ago or so.

Where's Putrajaya?

Riyadhi Putrajaya is somwhat like Brazilia, the capital of Brazil. Its a "master-planned" city in Malaysia, which acts somewhat as the administrative headquarters of the country. I think it was started somewhere around 1995 or such. Its something like the King Abdullah Economic City but more legislative and smaller, rather than commercial. But it apparently boasts very advanced infrastructure!

I love the roads of Riyadh they are sooooo wide and perfect for my big SUV unlike in Dubai soo tight and damn small …. more roads are needed in Dubai to improve traffic cause its an issue when I was living there. I wonder if Yemen has any highways ….????

I think you need to understand that a lot of goods/services that are carried out by multinational corporations in the Middle East is probably done by being aware of cultural prohibitions. Furthermore, a lot of the clothes they buy, they end up wearing them amongst family and friends behind closed doors(Women). Males on the other hand probably dress as western as Western men depending on their age.

That's my impression, any Saudi's here that can verify what i said? or add to it?

Yes, today alot of Saudi women wear pretty much anything the western woman wear but again, only other women and relative men can see it!!

I have some very weird memory from when I was a little kid when I used to live in Saudi Arabia. We were in some airport and all of the seats were green and the room had people in abayas and traditional dress everywhere. The walls around were wooden.

Dude, in Riyadh, if you are driving at a 120 (and thats KM/HR for all ye Americans) and behind you a driver at 160, he BUMPS YOU IN THE TRUNK if you don't get out of the way... and after that he slashes off your right mirror when overtaking as a form of punishment for not making way...all in cold blood, and in big American cars/trucks (Buick, Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon, etc.)...

That's Saudi driving for you... the world's second highest death rate on the road (fatalities per passenger per million km's)...

Yeah if you said this three years ago I would have agreed but thank god its been clamped down on now, police are camped every where with speed guns (I think thats what they're called) and unmarked special traffic cop cars are roaming the street everywhere (and I mean everywhere) just in case, and if caught 10 miles over you get a sizable fine and 20 miles over is 3 days jail time if I remember correctly, and thats for everyone no vitamin wow can get you out of it, so thank god for that as the last time I was there no one was messing around anymore.

^^ Riyadh needs lot more skyscrapers. It falls quite a bit short of skyscrapers compared to Abu Dhabi, Bahrian and Doha, Kuwait city. Just about all the GCC capitals with the exception of Muscat, if I am not mistaken.

look, saudi's are some of the best drivers in the world, when they ram someone for driving slow, the slow driver deserve it.

I remember, the initial name of this mall was Riyadh Galleria, but for some reason during the construction of the project they changed it to Riyadh Gallery. If you look at those glass-engraved signs inside the mall, you'd notice that it still has the word "Galleria" instead of "Gallery".

^^ my gush, if you only knew what I've gone through when I took those pics....believe it or not, I was caught by the Security in which he apprehended me and my friend...he took my camera and our Iqama ID's...then, he brought us to their Security office and held us there for more than 10 minutes...we were being questioned and reprimanded us that it's not allowed to take pics in the mall unless with consent...fortunately, the General Manager came in and he instructed the guards to release but he reminded us that since, it is our first offense, he said that the store authority forgiven us but next time if we do that again, penalty will be implemented....whew! thank goodness!

^^I once tried to take photos in this mall, but since I look like a foreigner (:D) the security guard only told me that I wasn't allowed to take photos inside the mall...

I don't have a Lebanese passport, since I am Israeli citizen. But I have another passport which I could use to enter Saudi Arabia. However, I prefer to enter on my Israeli passport, since this is what I identify myself as. Most Israelis could probably visit Saudi, since a lot of us have multiple passports. And it's quite likely that you've met Israelis in Saudi without realizing it.

I hope one day soon Israel can have normal relations with all the Arab countries, I think it could benefit everyone. But I'm probably a minority in this opinion...

As long as Palestine is free I think most muslims would have absolutely no problems with Israel. By Palestine I mean West Bank and Gaza. Atleast that's my opinion.

Most Israelis, I think, support a two state solution along those terms. But it's problematic to withdraw from the West Bank when Hamas or Qaida-affiliated groups are launching rockets at Israeli towns/cities from the Gaza Strip, which Israel withdrew from 3 years ago.

Yea, you all support a 2 state solution. You're really peaceful people. That's why hundreds of children and civilians died in your last raid.

Unlike you, I'm pretty straight forward. I do hate israel and I have no intention of hiding it. Lebanon is a kick ass place though =)

Hello friends,
My name is Khurram and I was born in Riyadh. I spent all my teen years before moving to another country in 1996.
I miss my origin city very much and in this forum I see expert photographers with their excellent skills.
Can someone from you guys help me sustain my memories of Riyadh coz when I left we did not used to have digital cameras or mobile fones with cams?

I want specific memories of

1. Batha Souk - the market on the main road, some shops from outside if possible
2. Manfoha souk - The old abandoned mall in the center where only main attraction was Abu Hussain Bakala since the mall was not a commercial success. Also, some pix of the main road leading from this old mall to main Shaara Mutaar signal as there are shops and almost at the end after Saqaaf medical store just before the signal there used to be a turkish pizza shop, one pic of that plz.
3. Shoula Souk - pix from ground floor. It was my favorite mall.
4. Jarir Book Store in Olaya, I think. The main bookstore.

I know its too much to ask and there is lot of efforts involved but if any of you provide me these memories, I will be very, very grateful to you.
I love Riyadh and its memories help me live on my life.

bare in minde that Shaqra is a small town . so you if you want for example to go shopping , you'll need to go to Riyadh . if you're laptop is broken , you'll need to go to Riyadh and so on .

The Filipino community in Saudi Arabia is quite large and diverse. I think you'll find lots of fellow Filipinos living in Shaqra, don't worry :)
If you're Muslim, it'd be a lot easier to live in such a small town but I think it'll work out for you. Small towns people are warm hearted and usually open to other people (That's what I experienced first hand though, discussion is an option).

Thanks! At least I'm somewhat relieved of my anxiety. This will be my first time working abroad/outside our country and reading your insights and somehow being familiar with the place (through pictures) would really help! :)
