Well.. Lagos has more than 10 million people aon a just a sall mall like this! I cant believe, this problabli is not right Tbite January 21st, 2007, 05:27 AM nahh it's the biggest alright, although there are other malls under construction Here are two that are currently under construction - (No name mall yet) in Royal Gardens Estate, Lekki Development Corridor (Victoria Island), Situated on 6.6 hectares (66,700 square meters) - ( name unknown), mall to be built by Trustville Properties Development Company Limited in the Ojo axis of metropolitan Lagos costs 4.5 million dollars, palms costs 30 mill Matthias Offodile January 21st, 2007, 01:52 PM Is tuis one the biggest in Lagos!? Well.. Lagos has more than 10 million people aon a just a sall mall like this! I cant believe, this problabli is not right Jônatas, unfortunately yes, it is still Lagos biggest mall at the moment. Due to the military dictatorships of the 80īs and 90īs, Nigeria fell asleep, our country grinded to a complete halt when Abacha died. Shopping centre revolution has still not started in Nigeria. A couple of decent malls opened (like The Palms, Lagos City Mall), but that is still a less than drop in the ocean considering Nigeriaīs growing middle classes and economic reawakening. Honestly said, it is a BIG S-H-A-M-E for a country like ours, simply unforgivable, to my mind! But donīt forget that India virtually had no decent first-world malls up to the late 90īs for a population of more than 1 billion people and suddenly the mall revolution started in India and nowadays Indian cities are full of great malls. The mall revolution will/has to start in Lagos, too...because urban Nigerians love shopping and generally are pretty brand-conscious people (men and female alike)...In the coming years or decade, I am dead sure that more malls will start getting built in Lagos. There are currently two modern malls u/c in Abuja. The malls that exist in Lagos are running very well in terms of sales figures. ...letīs hope that this will be the "onslaught" for an aggressive mall expansion which is long overdue! First world malls are still non-existent for most parts of Africa. So the question of malls in Africa should be a addressed in 5 to 10 years again. South Africa is the only place within Sub-Saharan Africa that is full of fantatsic mega malls (malls that you would/should expect to find in Nigeria as well). Angola will likely see the sharpest rise of first world style mall construction in the coming years within sub-saharan Africa. They opened a new mall (phase I consists of 150 shops and phase II which is still u/c will have 400 shops in total. It will be among Africaīs biggest malls on completition). Brazilian and Portuguese investors are planning more huge malls in Angola in the coming years due to some articles I have read. I hope that an African style theme mall will be among the projects. Do not forget that a 35$ billion dollar city is u/c in Luanda replete with first class hotels, offices, glitzy malls and golf courses. Three weeks back I repeatedly read an article in the German press on Luandaīs boom. It is really awesome! Senegal is about two open some nice malls. Ghana will get its first world style mall (Accra Mall) pretty soon. (There had been malls in Ghana - as well as in Nigeria before - but they are not really stylish and "first world like", in my eyes). As you can see Kenya has some nice malls, too! (see photos in the thread). Kenya and Uganda will most likely add more malls in the coming furture. Expect some (more) mall construction coming out of the smaller and richer African countries like Botswana, Mauritius, Gabon, Namibia, La Réunion and Cape Verde, but mall expansion will be limited in those countries due to the small population. So come back in 5-10 years and you will find more pics of African malls. Matthias Offodile January 21st, 2007, 02:14 PM Kampala (Uganda) Garden City Mall http://farm1.static.flickr.com/53/139457176_ac0cd7dcaa_o.jpg Matthias Offodile January 21st, 2007, 02:23 PM RiverWalk Mall in Gaboronne (Botswana) http://www.csmonitor.com/2003/0909/csmimg/p10a.jpg http://www.krumeich.de/afrika2005/images/lowres640/img_2170.jpg http://www.krumeich.de/afrika2005/images/lowres640/img_2168.jpg Matthias Offodile January 21st, 2007, 08:41 PM A shopping mall called "Maerua Mall" and its expansion projects in Windhoek (Namibia) http://k41.pbase.com/v3/93/329493/1/45606186.nam457.JPG expansion works: http://www.oryx.com.na/images/2006/aerial01sml.jpg http://www.oryx.com.na/images/2006/aerial02sml.jpg a few pics from inside the mall http://www.oryx.com.na/images/2006/Shops1.JPG http://www.oryx.com.na/images/2006/Shops3.JPG dysan1 January 22nd, 2007, 12:36 AM Gateway Theatre of Shopping - Durban South Africa www.gatewayworld.co.za Africa and the southern hemispheres largest shopping mall. Luanda sure is another, like Maputo in the next year too, and this small but strong economy countries you have said. wiki January 22nd, 2007, 02:02 AM all those malls are impressive Harkeb January 22nd, 2007, 07:10 AM LOL, many shop brands in african malls, are south african; and the interiors could easily be mistaken for malls in SA. It's great that SA companies are investing & spreading across Africa, to provide jobs and better quality of life for the locals. Harkeb January 22nd, 2007, 07:14 AM Canal Walk in Cape Town used to be the biggest, with over 400 stores. I don't know how it will compare to extended the Durban mall. Nigeria is playing catch up though, with the construction of the 80,000 m2 shopping and entertainment center in Tinapa  Matthias Offodile January 22nd, 2007, 12:16 PM South African malls are fantastic....you wouldnīt find such great theme malls even here in Germany. (got more department stores and small shops than malls) Canal Walk is absolutely beautiful and my favourite out of them all , Dubai-Style mall, gorgeous! Is is right that one can take a boat ride to the various sections of the complex? The Gateway Theatre shopping in Durban looks massive and very impressive, too! dysan1 January 22nd, 2007, 01:37 PM i dont see the "beauty" of the canal walk centre and apartments around it. its all rather kitsch. maybe its cos i hate themey places. Its a nice enough centre tho inside, pity it doesnt have the stores of the V&A or cavendish tho Matthias Offodile January 22nd, 2007, 03:05 PM Dysan1, well, beauty is all a matter of taste! I donīt you if you know or have been to the Ibn Battuta Mall in Dubai? It is stupendous! Personally, it was the best mall in the whole world I have been to. SIR, It might have escaped your notice , that the mall in Cairo cost more than $700 million to build and that it is the LARGEST mall in Africa with 550 shops (mostly exclusive shops) in total! Look it up on wikepedia and visit their website before opening your mouth and spitting on us! :bash: Moreover, nobody said that only big malls should find their way in here, the thread is about Modern African Malls. If you have nothing more to say than to insult people with your shallow crab simply .........! Chalaco January 25th, 2007, 01:10 AM My favorite is the Cairo mall, it's so beautiful! I love it. :) Greetings. gocity1979 January 26th, 2007, 04:49 AM How much would it cost me to get dressed in Nigeria. Lets say im taking a trip there but I don't want to take any bags with me. I want to buy all my clothes there. I want to dress kinda snazzy you know linen pant hawian silky shirt dobb hat. Whats the bill lookin like. How much for the shoes, accessories, haircut and overall spa treatment. I would want to be in a nice area ofcourse but not necessarily the most upscale area of the city. Can I get better deals on clothing than in US Tbite January 26th, 2007, 08:29 AM You would get a better deal in Nigeria, but it all depends on where you shop, you'd have to shop in a place like "Chinatown" for example. Stay away from the upscale parts of the city, things are much pricier in those areas. It'd cost around 3500 Naira (around 25 dollars) to get your Hawaiin shirt. Shoes can be bought almost everywhere for around the same price as the shirt or 7000 Naira if you want a really good shoe. To get a decent spa you'd have no choice but to venture to the upscale parts of the MegaMetropolis like Ikoyi, Victoria Island e.t.c It'll probably cost you more than in the US. You can get yourself a great haircut for a suprisingly low price and i mean great haircut. Barber shops are everywhere, but you'd want to stay away from areas like Ajegunle or Surulere :ohno:. Overrall your bill would probably be around 200 dollars to 250.:) gocity1979 January 26th, 2007, 09:53 PM I'm going to have to make a trip out there sooner than later. Looks really nice. Skyprince March 7th, 2007, 08:26 AM When I was in Egypt, i went to the City Star Shopping Mall . It is located in Medinat Nasr -Heliopolis area, one of the most high-end residential sides of Cairo. But in City Star Shopping Mall at that time, it was still packed with people , we continued shopping until 12 am, it's getting more and more crowded. Are these malls mainly geared towards tourists and expatriates or do the locals all speak English as well as their native languages? I live in Los Angeles and I've been to malls in Mexico and they're all in Spanish. But the Accra Mall looks like its going to raise the bar and is worth watching. I bet once this become successful, West Africa will be poised for an explosion in retail commercial property. I travel to Ghana and Nigeria often as i am involved in the telecommunications sector and i keep getting a lot of interest from potential investors looking to enter this sector. The only challenge is land ownership issues which appears to be a risk factor but many realise that this is no longer a plausible argument. kulani April 1st, 2007, 12:44 AM Below is the Sandton **** + Nelson Mandela Square mall in Sandton, Johannesburg. I personally still find it unbelievable that someone has not capitalized on this and invested in this sector. But its clearly a matter of time and Tinapa is a clear proof of this. Kenguy April 3rd, 2007, 01:16 PM Have a few questions about SA malls: 1. When were the first malls built? 2. Are they only located in major cities (Joburg, Durban,CT,PE?) or also in smaller cities and towns? 3. Do they serve the majority of the population or are all of them catering for the wealthy population? kulani April 3rd, 2007, 02:16 PM Have a few questions about SA malls: 1. When were the first malls built? 2. Are they only located in major cities (Joburg, Durban,CT,PE?) or also in smaller cities and towns? 3. Do they serve the majority of the population or are all of them catering for the wealthy population? 1. Kenguy, the first mega shopping malls in SA were built i believe in the late 1980s. Like most things in SA, they were largely built to cater for a predominantly white population. 2. - Today shopping malls are spread accross smaller cities like Pietermariztburg, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Kimberly, Rustenburg, Welkom, Port Elizabeth and even small towns (e.g. Makhado, Pinetown, East London). The 1990s saw a mall craze throughout the whole country with every other mall trying to outdo the previous one. - As an example Soweto (largest township) boosts about 2/3 shopping malls with a capacity of 100 shops each. This year Soweto will receive a few mega malls of its own with the Maponya Mall ($70 million, 60,000 square meters) being scheduled for completion this June and a bigger development worth $140 million starting construction this year. My home town (a small little town of 100,000 people) was also building a 100 shop mall for $20 million. So the malls have discovered the so called black middle class which is today fueling most of the retail growth and driving the SA economy. 3. In the last 10 years the malls have transformed and started spreading into townships and smaller towns to serve the poor majority. But the top end malls that i showcased are largely targeted at middle to upper income groups. The lower income groups are served by retailers such as Shoprite, Hyperrama, Diskom, Score as well as local retailers while the high income groups are served by retailers like Woolworths, Pick 'n Pay, Game, Clicks etc. Kenguy April 3rd, 2007, 02:58 PM 1. Do you have these brands in Africa ? Kenny Rogers Roasters Marrybrown Giordano Parkson JUSCO Habib Jewels Genki Sushi TESCO First i have to point out that the most famous brands really also depend on each country. While Nandos is famous in Southern African countries, you will find that Mr Biggs is famous in West Africa and so on. We are though beginning to see chains that are expanding throughout the continent such as Shoprite, Game and Woolworths. In South Africa we also have KFC, McDonald, Subway, Hagen Daiz. The most famous local restaurents in SA are Nandos, Wimpy, Steers, Spur, Black Steers, Mike's kitchen, Fontana, Chicken Licken, Something Fishy, Ocean Basket, Mug 'n Bean, Mochochos etc. While Shoprite with over 700 stores in over 17 countries in Africa is arguably Africa's walmart. Others like Woolworths with 150 shops, Pick 'n Pay and Checkers and OK etc are also big chains of grocery shops. Truworths, Edgars, Foschina, Mr Price, Pep etc are in clothing. I am not too much into Jewellery (but i trust i will know a few weeks before i propose marriage to someone), but there is a few chains in that sector as well. Kenguy April 10th, 2007, 06:01 PM Other than Mr Bigg's, are there any West African stores that have a presence in more than one country in Africa or that are planning to expand into the rest of the continent? adebayoa April 10th, 2007, 06:12 PM I do not think so. 9yja April 10th, 2007, 06:40 PM good views. I know this often confuses a lot of people and i also used to be confused when i heard about the other Woolworths in US,UK and Australia and interestingly they all also happen to be grocery franchises. Since its inception 74 years ago in Cape Town, the Woolworths brand has become synonymous with innovation, quality and value for money. The economist called it Africa's Wal-Mart in an article in 2005 which showed that Shoprite has grown from humble beginnings of a few shops in Cape Town to over 700 shops in 16 countries all within 13 years. Like the other groups, Pick 'n Pay originates from Cape Town and was founded by one of South Africa's most celebrated business tycoons, Raymond Ackerman. Interestingly most insurance and retail chains originates from Cape Town. I guess there is no mining to be done there, so the Cape Townians have to invent something else like retail, insurance, adverts, films, tourism and wines! http://farm1.static.flickr.com/33/38556554_e20e4ea6d2_o.jpg http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1390/1356973940_3ebb3ffaf9_o.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/224/475386693_091f089dce_b.jpg http://farm1.static.flickr.com/189/485253734_f25d04b2b2_o.jpg Also there is a whole bunch of Spars all over the place (typically targets small towns, townships and suburbs) http://farm1.static.flickr.com/101/274003067_8b1cb8e1a9_o.jpg Some are bigger than others http://farm1.static.flickr.com/170/443828523_70cd0b3d0f_b.jpg Tbite July 17th, 2007, 11:04 AM Palms Shopping Mall, Lekki http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1261/817778056_7e747bf31e_b.jpg Matthias Offodile July 17th, 2007, 01:04 PM Kulani, nice pics, you added there. I canīt believe that Woolworth South Africa looks so nicely decorated and well-arranged, in Germany Woolworth is a dreadful store, it is really stuck in time!! Btw, is South Africa īs Woolworth associated with Woolworth UK? I always get this question, LOL. Last but not least, before i forget and also for the sake of our Australian, UK and American friends, Woolworths is not related to the US F.W Woolworths company, nor the British Woolworths Group plc, nor the Australian Woolworths. I know this often confuses a lot of people and i also used to be confused when i heard about the other Woolworths in US,UK and Australia and interestingly they all also happen to be grocery franchises. kulani July 17th, 2007, 02:45 PM Anyone has the picture of News Cafe at the Palms Shopping mall in Lagos. A friend who was recently in VI, LAGOS told me its really off the hook and the latest hot hangout spot. Although a Nigerian friend who stays here in SA recently told me that the drinks are so pricey, you will almost choke when you see the price list. He was saying something like a beer can easily set you off over $12, but i am not sure if he was not just referring to some cocktail that just happens to be expensive or just plain exaggerating, 'cause i couldn't believe this price myself. Kenguy July 17th, 2007, 08:15 PM Interesting. The Woolworth stores in Kenya and East Africa in general just sell clothes. though they are also considered upmarket stores. Those are my favourate stations, but there's sure a whole lot of other stations that also play hip-hop and r&b throughout SA. My experience is that although SA stations are up to date with hip-hop, they lag West African radio stations, perhaps because West Africans are well represented in the US and therefore are closer to the action and US hip-hop culture is more familiar to them. Matthias Offodile July 24th, 2007, 04:36 PM i think i underestimated palms mall, its great It is standard, nothing special! Something that Asian cities have at nearly every street corner, check out the quantity of malls in Bangkok, Jakarta, Mumbai, in Delhi (Guragon), in Manila (Makati). bangkok alone has more than +60 malls! I am not talking about the highly adavced countries in Asia such as Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong (with its special status) or Japan? The palms is a start that has long been overdue, Lagos is still a shoppingīs desert! I want to see more than 20 (mega) mall in Lagos is a decade! Then there is hope and reason for joy (as far as consumer "paradise" is concerned). Does anyone know how many new malls are under construction in Lagos at the moment?? kulani July 24th, 2007, 05:25 PM sure, i think everything starts somewhere, i am happy that they have at least raised the bar, so that everyone else can now start to aim much higher. Also you have to realize that the challenge in mall development also comes in tenants. You can't develop 120,000 square meters of retail space if you won't be able to get the tenants that will afford to pay the rentals and also be able to bring the required foot traffic to make the development a commercial success. Here you have to balance the tenants between international brands and local ones. So the Palms has brought a certain tenant mix which will be useful for future mall developers to tap. New tenants also need to be brought to the Nigerian market, but they all will look at the current tenants who are there and being successful before they venture into the market. Its all about mitigating the risk factors to attract more players and here all the small malls that are springing up now, are making it all that less riskier for the big malls to invest. Right now, i think Lagos and Abuja is ripe for malls in the $200 - $500 million range with at least 90,000 square meters of retail space. I hope the land owners do not become a problem in the process of releasing land to develop these kind of malls and the government start to fix the roads that lead to these malls. nairoberry July 24th, 2007, 05:31 PM man, with the population in lagos i think in a dacade that place should have a good bunch of greate malls coz galleria and palms cant handle that poupulation. btw GREAT POINT KULANI kulani July 24th, 2007, 05:50 PM man, with the population in lagos i think in a dacade that place should have a good bunch of greate malls coz galleria and palms cant handle that poupulation. btw GREAT POINT KULANI absolutely, if i was a mall property developer, i would be aiming seriously on Lagos and Abuja, because the potential is massive. And best of all, the naija boys, spend..... chui July 24th, 2007, 05:59 PM African megastores proliferate across continent By Elizabeth A. Kennedy The Associated Press Published: June 7, 2007 NAIROBI: At thousands of street corners across Africa, tiny wooden kiosks are arranged to peddle everything from phone cards to glass bottles of Coca-Cola. But the continent in recent years has been seeing an increase in what long has been a staple in the West: The "megastore," selling food, electronics, beauty products, furniture and even, in some cases, cars. They are part of an often overlooked economic boom of sorts across the world's poorest continent. The Kenyan supermarket Nakumatt, which has 18 stores, is poised to become the most wide-reaching East African megaretailer, with plans to open its first outlets outside the country starting in November. Like the U.S. chains Wal-Mart and Target, many Nakumatt shops are brightly lit and stuffed with television sets, refrigerators and other big-ticket items, alongside staples like vegetables, milk and bread. The new stores planned for Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda would make Nakumatt ready to match the ambitions of giants based in South Africa, like Metcash and Shoprite, according to analysts at Planet Retail in London. Until now, those companies have been the only retailers in the region with the financial power for expansion plans of this scale. U.S. inquiry casts shadow over prominent Hong Kong businessmanMurdoch's arrival worries Wall Street Journal staffChina's economic growth accelerates despite efforts to slow it downThe African Development Bank reported in May that the rate of economic growth on the continent would rise to 6 percent this year, the highest level in two decades. Some countries have reported especially striking results, The Malawi economy grew by 8.5 percent last year, for instance. In Kenya, Nakumatt has grown thanks to the relative financial stability in the largest economy in East Africa, which last year grew 6.1 percent, the highest rate since 1981. The retailer also is gearing up to be listed on the Nairobi Stock Exchange by 2009. Planet Retail said Nakumatt would find a large customer base outside Kenya, particularly in Tanzania's urban centers of Dar es Salaam and Arusha. "In both cities, South African retailer Shoprite has already opened stores, but market sizes and economic stability suggest there is room for more," the analysts said in a recent report. The Shoprite Group of Companies is the largest food retailer in Africa. Over all, it runs 886 outlets in 17 countries across Africa, the Indian Ocean islands and southern Asia. Another Kenyan supermarket chain, Uchumi - which means "economy" in Swahili - has a branch in Uganda, but has suffered vast financial woes. Uchumi shut down in June 2006 after 30 years of business, saying it could no longer sustain its losses and blamed mismanagement, political interference and competition. Local media described the closures as "one of the greatest corporate disasters in the history of independent Kenya." A government-led rescue plan saw the reopening of all but 3 of 17 Uchumi stores in Nairobi. The Ugandan outlet, operating under a local franchise, has continued to operate. So-called "big-box stores" in the United States, like Costco, have long been the target of critics who say their discounted goods drive out "mom-and-pop" shops and sap communities of their local flavor. But Nakumatt, which has been in business for more than 20 years but only recently supersized its stores, has been quick to state that it was not out to hurt small businesses or local farmers. Earlier this month, Nakumatt, which in the past has stocked mainly foreign goods, pledged to support local industry. "We stock local products, we deal with local investors, local banks," said the Nakumatt operations manager, Thiagarajan Ramamurthy. Owners of the local corner kiosks say they do not see much of a threat. David Mwauria, who has been selling flowers on the roadside just steps away from the newest Nakumatt in Nairobi - a hulking stone building - said that he has had even more customers since the store opened weeks ago. "Some customers come here to buy, some go there," he said. "There is enough business to go around." Matthias Offodile July 24th, 2007, 06:45 PM Well as for Abuja, three mega malls are under construction - to my ntice one built by A British company (City Mall ), it is a $300 million dollar venture. Abuja Mall which will be huge mega mall built by an Emirati company and Unity Mall Marketing people must be very deaf and have nothing in their brains, how can they miss to ignore Nigeria for so many years? Everybody that has entered made a lot of money. I am even thinking of opening a franchisee there. We Nigerians are extremly brand-conscious people (especially Igbo girls attach a lot of importnance to clothes and brands, gadgets, perfumes and cosmetics, they will do anything just to look good and trendy) iluvnaija July 24th, 2007, 09:54 PM yes kulani..the one with the woman in the big hat kulani July 25th, 2007, 12:06 AM yes kulani..the one with the woman in the big hat Thanks, i have nuked it. Thatīs so true what you said, those twenty years of horrible mismangement flung back Naija almost an entire generation! Nations like Thailand overtook Nigeria in the 80īs! It can be so frustrating, just imagine where Nigeria would be today if the growth rate of 7-8% of the 1970īs continued! Wow, Nigeriaīs GDP might probably be higher than that of Argentina today! But we have to look forward now, the economy is growing at a rate of almost 6% per annum now again. (although I would love to see 9%) but no time to look back, the past is gone!
