The Metrotrén (metrotrain) is a regional/suburban rail system running out of Santiago's Central Station to
the city of San Fernando, about 150km (93mi) to the south. The Metrotrén system has 16 stations and is
run by the EFE (Empresa de Ferrocarriles del Estado, the State Rail Company). The system was started in
October 1990 and currently has a ridership of about 7.5 to 8 million passengers a year with 94 trips daily.
Commuters may also access the Santiago metro (subway) from the Central Station.

Chile has a passenger rail system which also runs out of the Santiago Central Station all the way to the
southern city of Puerto Montt, but this is not the same as the Metrotrén and is not the subject of this thread.

The following pictures and text were provided by the Chilean forumer Caglieri, who's given me
permission to post it. All of the pictures are taken by him on the 1.5hr train trip he took in December 2006 to
Rengo, 110km (69mi) south of Santiago.

The orange line indicates the trip to Rengo pictured here. San Fernando is just to the south.

^^Nice infrastructure!
:okay:
Trains are Spanish, they are 2nd hand from the 80s and they have been completely refurbished.
We still have some of them here in Spain!
;)

Thanks Bitxofo for the info! Yes those trains look quite cool actually.

Chile uses them for short-haul commuting only. There are also other types of trains for medium and long haul:

There are more trains in other cities and also subways, but that's another topic :)

cheers!

if i'm not mistaken the blue/gold trains are older and the orange are new, correct? Weren't the new orange trains originally built for Concepcion's Biotren and if so what's the Biotren using for rolling stock?

Chilean Railways

Total: 6,782 km

Chile's railways (except for a few dedicated industrial lines) are operated by the state owned company "Empresa de los Ferrocarriles del Estado" (EFE), which completed a major investment programme in 2005.

Nice!

It would be great to see the Chile - Argentina rail link re-established.

What about regular rail services from Santiago to Puerto Montt or from Santiago to Valparaiso? Can we dream for some Northern line? Ate there any talks about High speed rail in Chile?

^^
All the pics above show former Spanish trains from Renfe.
Ex-class 440 and 444 EMUs from Renfe exactly, all more or less refurbished and sold to Chile.
You might recognize the only slightly 440 EMU from Renfe, now in a different livery.
The others are heavily refurbished and harder to recognize...
Hope they´re doping well, they´re not that new...
Seventies and eighties stuff.
There is also a pic of an ex-Arco Renfe coach (the TerraSur one).
