Further work for the high profile Kuwait City 1st Ring Road
2006-08-07

nternational consultancy Parsons Brinckerhoff Ltd (PB) has been chosen by the Ministry of Public Works, Kuwait, to provide construction supervision and contract administration for the high profile Jahra Roundabout Package 1 scheme on the Kuwait 1st Ring Road.

The project involves the construction and maintenance of roads, bridges, storm water drainage, sewerage and other services on the major urban highway in the downtown area of the city. PB has been awarded the contract in conjunction with Gulf Kuwait, with whom they completed the design work in 2004.

The construction period is due to be completed within 3.5 years and for the people of Kuwait city it will improve traffic flow at the western part of Kuwait City, the Jahra Gate intersection, with a significant reduction in the current heavy traffic congestion in the area. In addition, the associated roads within Kuwait City will also benefit, alleviating current traffic congestion in and around the area.

Package One incorporates 1km of at-grade roads, 2.4km of depressed roads in troughs and tunnels, 1.5km of elevated roads and 14 bridges, as well as storm water drainage, protection and relocation of existing utilities, environmental protection work during construction and traffic protection and maintenance of traffic flow during construction.

The area being worked on poses many challenges as the location is in the environmentally sensitive areas adjoining the historic Jahra Gate part of the city with an old and complex network of existing underground services. Also, It will require maintaining services and traffic access during construction in this congested area with residential and commercial properties.

"We are pleased to have been selected by the Ministry to assist them in seeing this challenging project successfully completed; we will mobilize a full time team of over 30 professionals from a range of disciplines including highways, structures, utilities, environment and geotech" says PB’s project manager Anas A. Kassem.

A further two packages are planned to follow and will lead to free-flowing traffic over the entire 1st Ring Road. Ultimately this will create an infrastructure to meet the future needs of the City.

I feel sorry for areas to be affected by the first ring road. While it's undeniable that the sheraton roundabout needs work, take a look at the plans: the parking lot in front of the behbehani houses will be eliminated, so that right in front of casper and gambini's will be a big ditch with cars running by; also, the houses in residential shuwaikh will be so much closer to the highways. why is there no easement or setback enforced? Also, the Watya area will be isolated from the 1st ring road network, now being served by what looks like service roads. No wonder people are stopping developments in that area.
Heresy should not dictate the functional development of Kuwait City! Design without consideration of context is dictatorship, not progress.

I still beliebe they should reconsider the path of the project for the following reasons.
1- It will overlap with an existing plan for the metro under Abdulla Alahmed Street.
2- Am not an engineer so correct me if am wrong. If they actually go with digging the first ring road along Abdulla Alahmed Street then the metro will be costly to build since more foundation and salt water proofing will be required to protect the tracks and the station. Simple math (First ring road 5 meters deep) + (approximately 1-2m for foundation for first ring road) + (5-7 meters for station and tracks) + close proximity to the beach. They would approach the sea water by digging.
3- The path cuts through the city and would probably cross archaeological sites which (as we know) will get the approval for removal just so that the project gets completed.
So, the first ring road should end at Gulf road on either side of the city just like other ring road. :)

Construction work around churches inconveniences devotees, diners

Published Date: October 18, 2007
By Nancy Oteifa, Staff writer

KUWAIT: The entire surrounding area near the churches in Kuwait City also known as the Sheraton Roundabout has became a nightmare for Christian devotees in trying to get to their churches to pray. Diners too are also inconvenienced in getting access to dine in their favorite restaurants that are lined up in the same area due to the construction work going on there in full swing. Many people wishing to get to the restaurants' block suffer as they fail to get parking space in the very limited parking area w
hile many others have to park several blocks away to reach their churches to perform their prayers. This Kuwait Times reporter visited the area where all the hectic construction activity has been going on for several months now, right in front of the main entrances of the churches.

On asking some waiters working in two of the Italian restaurants beside the Coptic and Catholic churches about the difficulties they face due to the construction activity going on, a Filipino waiter said, "This has been going on for several months. They started by blocking the main road that connects the churches and the skyscrapers in the area, but then starting early May they even blocked the whole area. Buses used to drop us in front of our workplace, but now we have to walk a lot in this heat, and also
many of our customers have stopped frequenting the restaurant because they can't park their cars. Especially during Eid and other occasions when it's usually very crowded, customers come all the way and get frustrated with the traffic jams and the lack of parking places, and just leave.

His colleague too echoed the same views saying, "Parking is very difficult and the area has become very noisy. Accidents take place almost every day as people park just about anywhere and some block the passage of other cars. Weekends especially is a real misery with people coming to dine at the restaurants and people going to the churches." An Egyptian guard working at the Coptic church said, "We are suffering a lot due to the lack of parking spaces. Even children who used to come with their parents and p
lay outside are not coming anymore, simply because it's unsafe to play with all the construction activity going on. I heard that they are building bridges and flyovers to make it easier for all those who want to pray and to facilitate parking spaces for cars.

Tony who goes to the Catholic church said, "They are apparently constructing some bridges and flyovers in the area because the roundabout that had existed around the area was the cause of many accidents. The construction work started around March 2007, and no one seems to know when it will be completed. Going to church nowadays has become very difficult and I now have to leave my home a good 30 minutes earlier, to drop my family near the church and then hunt for a parking space which it always far away. Usually I park near Al-Watiya Souk and sometimes even have to park as far as, near the Kuwait Airways building, and then take a long walk to reach the church.

Another Catholic devotee said, "This bridge construction work must be over by December, as they have to take into consideration that our religious feast (Christmas) is very near and we want to be able to park easily and not suffer by parking far away and then walk for hours." One Kuwaiti student who used to spend his afternoons studying and browsing through his laptop with wireless connection in one of the renowned coffee shops lined up in this area said, "This area was very quiet and good for relaxing, I
used to come here every day, read some books and browse on my laptop while sipping my favorite coffee, but now I never find any place to park. I am lazy to wait for parking space.

Kuwaiti Ministry of Public Works said on Wednesday Dec 31, that the first ring road project which consists of three phases will include over two million cubic meters of excavation and more than 300,000 cubic meters of concrete.

The venture is aimed at increasing fast lanes traffic with an extension of 15 kilometers of roads, and boosting performance for internal lanes in an area spread along 10 kilometers.

The assistant undersecretary for road engineering affairs, Hussein Al-Mansour, told UAE Daily News that the project includes the opening of a six kilometers tunnel and 17 overpasses for vehicles, including seven for pedestrians.

Al-Mansour added the project also contains seven underground bridges and three bridges for services and maintenance.
The official noted that some roads will be cleared of obstacles for facilitating construction works.

He noted that the department is keen on preserving the needed environment for the project which includes testing water and soil and follow-up on environmental changes through the portable measuring devices to measure the rates of air quality and noise from the construction sites.

^^ no its not the first in the world neither is it in kuwait. there are are 7 highways ( 7 ring roads) surrounding the city in the shape of rings the first ring road corresponds to the first ring the second to the second ring and so on if you notice the map of Kuwait it would be very clear. refer this thread for more info on the roads in kuwait (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=273016&page=12)
