Hello everyone, this is my first post, and I thought I'd start with a photo tour of DC, my hometown. These Pictures are from me walking from Union Station to Georgetown. Actually I walked all the way to Rosslyn, but I'll post those Rosslyn pictures later. The weather was in the 70's this past Saturday, people were out in about, and I hit the streets early. Obviously, Downtown DC is rediculously huge so I wasn't even going to pretend to to try to get all of it in one day. So I stuck to a few streets. Oh yeah, too add to this madness, I just recently bought a fisheye lens, so I was experimenting with that. Not quite sure how they turned out. I hope you enjoy them.

Started Out in Union Station

Vicious pics head.

People who hate on DC (LA1), don't no anything about our city, or its vibrancy, party scene, transportation, culture, cruisine, or downtown.

Great pictures. I like the up close shot of the Post Office. What time of day were these taken? When I came home for break I wanted to take pictures of all the construction in NW DC and into Southern MoCo, but it would take forever...there must be over 100 cranes up.

Great pictures, they really portray DC as it's supposed to be. I liked the picture near Foggy Bottom, GWU's campus has drastically improved over the past few years.

DCBaby: Yeah people don't really understand that it's way more than just a government city and monuments. It's an actual city with tons of cultural history. I mean Motown and Harlem are always credited in the black renaissance, but DC had its part. Hey we even had a punk scene, minor threat, teen idles, bad brains (they were all black punk band). but it still has vibrant neighborhoods, and nothing looks fake. a lot of history in dc neighborhoods, we had riots too (not bragging). i just get irritated too when people judge DC quickly and unfairly and don't realize its not a stale city.

BalWash: I took these Saturday between 10am and 3pm. Maybe you'd be interested, but I remember hitting up the lincoln memorial one night at almost midnight. they keep it open to the public, there's even a ranger there. you can get some good shots. i've been meaning to go up there at night. but those would be some bad ass shots. Good luvk with you're endeavor, there's a ton of cranes up in DC and Montgomery county. Where do you go to school?

Yeah, the monuments never really close IRC, except for the interior of the Washington Monument. I may want to get some of monument photos before I go except for the fact that people see those pictures all the time. Perhaps getting shots of other parts of the city could help to rid us of this government-only reputation. I really want to get some pics on Haine's Point.
To answer your question, I go to Emory University.

Great pics...great first thread. And thank you for getting people in your pictures!
Those people looked pretty happy, they must not have realized what a "poor" skyline DC has!

People who give DC stick for its skyline (or lack thereof) must have some sort of phallic fixation. Most great European cities don't have a skyline to speak of, and doesn't take away from their greatness. Washington DC is not without its flaws, but not every city should be a clone of New York City.

Do you mind if I ask why? I should explain that I work down in Virginia, but I bought a house in the Baltimore East Side. I used to dislike Baltimore a lot, but it grew on me until the point where I wasn't just buying up there because I could afford it. I just like the people and the character better.

I think you could find a comparable place to NW in Baltimore if you looked hard enough. I think the Mount Vernon and Bolton Hill have a similar flavor to areas up Connecticut Ave. Canton and Federal Hill have some similiarities, but they are significanly distinctive Baltimore, in my opinion.

Well, you're not going to find too much in Baltimore equivalent to Northwest DC around Connecticut/Mass/Wisconsin Avenue, but you will find some. The perk is though, in Baltimore you're going to be much closer to the water (possibly with a view of it) and you're going to be paying less. DC's amenities are a short drive away when you need them.

I have only visited Baltimore 3 times so I am not aware of every neighborhood, and do not know everything Baltimore, I admit that. The Baltimore metro is fine, it was the people that unimpressed me, and you cant change the people. They were too blue-collar for me. I am told the area around Towson is THE nicest area in all of Baltimore and to me it was nothing special, there were still many uneducated people there. Columbia was very nice, but it was all new and was similar to the cookie cutter cities of the south. The harbor/power plant is very nice, but it is no different than what is found in Kansas City MO, Louisville, KY, and Charlotte, NC.

If I am going to live in a midsized city and pay much higher prices than I am accustomed to, I expect it to be a better place than small Rochester, NY is. And to me Baltimore is not. Baltimore has 2 of every 1 thing Rochester has but with more blue-collar people. Washington DC metro's population is down to earth and friendly, yet educated, and white collar. NE Virginia, SW Maryland, and NW DC proper is very nice and offers all the amenities one needs in an area that is well kept. The only problem I would have with DC is that for ME to be happy I would need to make 1 million dollars a year. Where in Rochester, NY I get all the same amenities and it is only necessary to make $100,000 a year to be happy.

That is why I feel that way.

I think Baltimore gets a bad rap from the whole blue collar white collar comparisons. I have a bunch of friends who work in DC and live there and they are definitely white collar. I do however, undertand what Rochester is saying to a point. But if you think that it's just blue collar, you just haven't really been exposed to that many people.

How true. Especially people that visit this website would not be inclined to prefer one city over another just because it had a much better skyline, what a silly notion. Thank god for that because that would mean mucho phallic fixation

You don't need to make a million a year to be happy. I mean, that's a lot of money period. Most people I know only make around 100k-200k a year and they live perfectly fine lives.

The second one may be F Street.
These all seem to be in Foggy Bottom or just east of Foggy Bottom.

EDIT: The third picture has to be 17th street and Pennsylvania Avenue because the road is blocked off to the right and that's the Renwick Gallery on the right.

Thanks for that. Yeah, I don't think I visited that area immediately west of the White House. I walked from the Watergate to the Kennedy Center, along the Potomac to the Lincoln Memorial, down the Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument, then to the White House, back to the National Mall to the Capitol Building, and ending at Union Station. I remember the area around the White House to be MUCH more dense and busy than the area I was staying in. I wished I had stayed at the Willard but the Watergate was nice.

If the Willard/Watergate are in your price range then I highly suggest staying in the Hay-Adams. It's my favorite hotel in the city. Although you can't go wrong with the Willard or even the Mayflower.

The Hay-Adams could just very well be in the best location right across from the White House. I think the Willard is more central to everything though. But I think I would need a hotel that's central to everything around Federal Triangle maybe, halfway between the Capitol Building and Lincoln Memorial, close to a subway station, and near the museums of the Smithsonian. Or possibly a hotel north of the Lincoln Memorial, west of the Ellipse. Just something that's more urban in a neighborhood like the ones in the pictures. The Watergate is kinda cut off from the action. I was actually surprised to find how pedestrian-unfriendly that area was.
