St. Regis To Make The Middle East Debut in Doha Qatar
1/8/2007 1:46:42 PM
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.® (NYSE:HOT) and Alfardan Group Holdings today announced a 30-year agreement with Starwood® to manage a new St. Regis® hotel in Doha, Qatar, the first step in Starwood’s ambitious plans to expand the ultra-luxury brand’s presence in the Gulf region. St. Regis Doha, scheduled to open in early 2010, will be a spectacular addition to the luxury hotel market in the thriving, cosmopolitan city of Doha, located on the renowned Persian Gulf coast.
“The St. Regis brand seeks to bring the most luxurious properties to the most exclusive locations in the world. When St. Regis Doha opens, it will offer guests unparalled bespoke service and as only the St. Regis brand can,” said Sharon Slade, vice president marketing, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts.
With its dazzling blue waters, sweeping desert backdrop and thriving business and commercial regions, Doha is a preferred destination for discerning visitors to the Middle East. This capital city of Qatar offers an eclectic mix of diversions for both leisure and business travelers alike, including elegant restaurants, exclusive boutiques, a wealth of historical treasures and a unique blend of oriental, Arabic and contemporary architecture.
“The announcement of St. Regis in Doha is another sign of Starwood’s commitment to developing its brands in fabulous destinations like the Middle East, where customized service is an integral part of the culture of hospitality,” said Roeland Vos, President of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Europe, Africa and Middle East. “We are delighted to be working with the Al Fardan Group Holdings on this new project and we hope this project is just the beginning of a long term partnership.”
Guests of St. Regis Doha will delight in the signature services for which the St. Regis brand is known, including its renowned St. Regis Butler Service, world-class concierge, exquisite design and world-class spa.
Close to Doha’s diplomatic area, the 322-room St. Regis Doha will be located on the beachfront in the West Bay area, the heart of the city’s business and commercial district. The hotel will be comprised of two adjoining “reflecting” towers, each consisting of fourteen floors, including 246 rooms and 82 suites. Eighteen water-front bungalows -- 8 one-bedroom and ten two-bedroom units -- will offer an uncompromising view and experience for guests.
Surrounded by the magnificent waters of the Arabian Gulf, Doha is the economic center of Qatar. Shopping and recreation is also a main attraction in Doha, boasting a wide array of water sports including scuba diving, jet skiing and kayaking. Adventurous travelers will appreciate the dramatic tours offered by Doha’s desert safari operators. Additional activities in Doha include lively restaurants, nightclubs and cafes.
St. Regis Doha will offer a business center, approximately 44,000 square feet of meeting and conference space. The hotel’s three restaurants will include a casual restaurant serving meals throughout the day, a gourmet specialty restaurant and an outdoor restaurant, lounge and cigar bar. Guests can rejuvenate at the St. Regis signature spa, featuring personal treatment rooms and a state-of-the-art fitness center.
“This is a very exciting development for anyone who values true luxury. St. Regis Doha underscores Alfardan’s strategy toward the relentless pursuit in redefining the luxury sector,” said Omar Alfardan, President of Alfardan Group. “As a full service ultra premium hotel, St. Regis Doha will be well positioned to provide first class hospitality and amenities in this rapidly developing commercial hub.”
St. Regis Hotels & Resorts includes the most celebrated properties in the world. The article says it's close to the diplomatic area...so i guess it would be between there and the InterCon, especially since it's not tall (twin 14-floor towers)?

^^^ YEs actually the embassies will be demolished and moved to a plot of land near Diana's palace (arch roundabout). I have a feeling that In a couple of years when all the towers fill the area--they will demollish the new embassies and build towers.. You'll c with all their backward planning!

St. Regis Hotel to open in Doha by 2010
doha • Starwood Hotels & Resorts yesterday signed an agreement with Alfardan Group for a 30-year management of St. Regis Hotel, a new QR1.5bn luxury hotel in Doha marking the debut of the St. Regis brand in the Middle East.
The St. Regis Doha Hotel which is expected to open on May 1, 2010, will be located on the beachfront in the West Bay area of Doha, and within close proximity of the Diplomatic Area.
Starwood Hotels is a fully integrated owner, operator and franchisor of hotels and resorts with renowned brands such as St Regis, The Luxury Collection, Sheraton and Le Meridien, to name just a few. The hotel will comprise two reflecting towers and 18 bungalows. The two “reflecting” towers, each consisting of 14 floors, will offer 328 ocean front guest rooms including 246 rooms and 82 suites.
“We are proud to bring our most exclusive brand with its uncompromising quality to this part of the world. This project is the beginning of a very long partnership with the Alfardan Group,” Roeland Vos, Starwood President for Europe, Africa and the Middle East told reporters at the signing ceremony.
He said that in its drive for expansion, this year alone Starwood will open nearly 20 new hotels in the Middle East, noting that Qatar with the world’s highest per capita and with its world-class infrastructure in addition to significant investments being made in tourist industry, health and education projects, offers many opportunities.
“All of this is positioning it as one of the highest quality destinations for cultural tourism and for us this agreement shows again our commitment to continue to grow specifically in this regional portfolio,” said Vos. He expressed confidence that the new hotel in Starwood’s portfolio will quickly establish itself as the leading luxury hotel in Doha.
Omar Hussein Alfardan, President of Alfardan Group, said that the St. Regis Doha underscores Alfardan’s strategy towards relentless pursuit in redefining the luxury sector. “In addition to being a host city for renowned sporting, intellectual, and cultural events, Doha is a growing destination spurred by sustainable economic development. As a full service ultra premium hotel, the St. Regis Doha will be well positioned to provide first class hospitality and amenities in this rapidly developing commercial hub,” he said.
The St. Regis Doha will also offer 4,100 square metres of meeting and conference space, business centre, shops, parking area, 4 restaurants — all-day dining restaurant, specialty restaurant, outdoor restaurant, lounge bar and a cigar bar; and for the ultimate in relaxation and recreation, a 1,200 square meters Spa is in plan, offering 8 to 10 treatment rooms in addition to a lavish fitness center spreading across 1,200 square metres of state-of-the-art equipment.

Technically 5 stars is the highest that can be awarded to a hotel. The burj al arab has just given itself a status of 7 stars because it has just gone that one step further, however is does not actually count

Personally, I think thats great - it gives the buildings character, and it usually ends up with very nice designs; my favorite tower in Doha is the Barzan tower, the one right next to the Commercial Bank (the one with a mix of Islamic and modern architecture) because it has a mix of Islamic and modern architecture.

^^yes, this render gives us another perspective on the development.
But, like qatarson pointed out, there is still a difference, that is to say the top of the building (green instead of qatari patterns).
I wouldn't say this is a 'new' render though. Maybe it's been on the net for ages and we find it just now. Maybe the one on the construction site is the newest one. Who knows?
