St. Regis To Make The Middle East Debut in Doha Qatar
1/8/2007 1:46:42 PM
Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc.® (NYSE:HOT) and Alfardan Group Holdings today announced a 30-year agreement with Starwood® to manage a new St. Regis® hotel in Doha, Qatar, the first step in Starwood’s ambitious plans to expand the ultra-luxury brand’s presence in the Gulf region. St. Regis Doha, scheduled to open in early 2010, will be a spectacular addition to the luxury hotel market in the thriving, cosmopolitan city of Doha, located on the renowned Persian Gulf coast.
“The St. Regis brand seeks to bring the most luxurious properties to the most exclusive locations in the world. When St. Regis Doha opens, it will offer guests unparalled bespoke service and as only the St. Regis brand can,” said Sharon Slade, vice president marketing, St. Regis Hotels & Resorts.
With its dazzling blue waters, sweeping desert backdrop and thriving business and commercial regions, Doha is a preferred destination for discerning visitors to the Middle East. This capital city of Qatar offers an eclectic mix of diversions for both leisure and business travelers alike, including elegant restaurants, exclusive boutiques, a wealth of historical treasures and a unique blend of oriental, Arabic and contemporary architecture.
“The announcement of St. Regis in Doha is another sign of Starwood’s commitment to developing its brands in fabulous destinations like the Middle East, where customized service is an integral part of the culture of hospitality,” said Roeland Vos, President of Starwood Hotels & Resorts in Europe, Africa and Middle East. “We are delighted to be working with the Al Fardan Group Holdings on this new project and we hope this project is just the beginning of a long term partnership.”
Guests of St. Regis Doha will delight in the signature services for which the St. Regis brand is known, including its renowned St. Regis Butler Service, world-class concierge, exquisite design and world-class spa.
Close to Doha’s diplomatic area, the 322-room St. Regis Doha will be located on the beachfront in the West Bay area, the heart of the city’s business and commercial district. The hotel will be comprised of two adjoining “reflecting” towers, each consisting of fourteen floors, including 246 rooms and 82 suites. Eighteen water-front bungalows -- 8 one-bedroom and ten two-bedroom units -- will offer an uncompromising view and experience for guests.
Surrounded by the magnificent waters of the Arabian Gulf, Doha is the economic center of Qatar. Shopping and recreation is also a main attraction in Doha, boasting a wide array of water sports including scuba diving, jet skiing and kayaking. Adventurous travelers will appreciate the dramatic tours offered by Doha’s desert safari operators. Additional activities in Doha include lively restaurants, nightclubs and cafes.
St. Regis Doha will offer a business center, approximately 44,000 square feet of meeting and conference space. The hotel’s three restaurants will include a casual restaurant serving meals throughout the day, a gourmet specialty restaurant and an outdoor restaurant, lounge and cigar bar. Guests can rejuvenate at the St. Regis signature spa, featuring personal treatment rooms and a state-of-the-art fitness center.
“This is a very exciting development for anyone who values true luxury. St. Regis Doha underscores Alfardan’s strategy toward the relentless pursuit in redefining the luxury sector,” said Omar Alfardan, President of Alfardan Group. “As a full service ultra premium hotel, St. Regis Doha will be well positioned to provide first class hospitality and amenities in this rapidly developing commercial hub.”

Massilia January 17th, 2007, 01:13 AM Great news!
The article says it's close to the diplomatic area...so i guess it would be between there and the InterCon, especially since it's not tall (twin 14-floor towers)?
Halawala January 17th, 2007, 12:39 PM Great news!

If you look next to the Hilton, you will see fenced out areas. Its probably that.
Massilia January 18th, 2007, 12:23 AM Yup maybe...is there still a plan of relocating the embassies somewhere else in Doha? Or why not make some space putting them all in one big skyscraper? ;)
Halawala January 18th, 2007, 01:18 AM ^^^ YEs actually the embassies will be demolished and moved to a plot of land near Diana's palace (arch roundabout). I have a feeling that In a couple of years when all the towers fill the area--they will demollish the new embassies and build towers.. You'll c with all their backward planning!
Halawala February 2nd, 2007, 11:03 AM St. Regis Hotel to open in Doha by 2010
doha • Starwood Hotels & Resorts yesterday signed an agreement with Alfardan Group for a 30-year management of St. Regis Hotel, a new QR1.5bn luxury hotel in Doha marking the debut of the St. Regis brand in the Middle East.
The St. Regis Doha Hotel which is expected to open on May 1, 2010, will be located on the beachfront in the West Bay area of Doha, and within close proximity of the Diplomatic Area.
Starwood Hotels is a fully integrated owner, operator and franchisor of hotels and resorts with renowned brands such as St Regis, The Luxury Collection, Sheraton and Le Meridien, to name just a few. The hotel will comprise two reflecting towers and 18 bungalows. The two “reflecting” towers, each consisting of 14 floors, will offer 328 ocean front guest rooms including 246 rooms and 82 suites.
“We are proud to bring our most exclusive brand with its uncompromising quality to this part of the world. This project is the beginning of a very long partnership with the Alfardan Group,” Roeland Vos, Starwood President for Europe, Africa and the Middle East told reporters at the signing ceremony.
He said that in its drive for expansion, this year alone Starwood will open nearly 20 new hotels in the Middle East, noting that Qatar with the world’s highest per capita and with its world-class infrastructure in addition to significant investments being made in tourist industry, health and education projects, offers many opportunities.
“All of this is positioning it as one of the highest quality destinations for cultural tourism and for us this agreement shows again our commitment to continue to grow specifically in this regional portfolio,” said Vos. He expressed confidence that the new hotel in Starwood’s portfolio will quickly establish itself as the leading luxury hotel in Doha.
Omar Hussein Alfardan, President of Alfardan Group, said that the St. Regis Doha underscores Alfardan’s strategy towards relentless pursuit in redefining the luxury sector. “In addition to being a host city for renowned sporting, intellectual, and cultural events, Doha is a growing destination spurred by sustainable economic development. As a full service ultra premium hotel, the St. Regis Doha will be well positioned to provide first class hospitality and amenities in this rapidly developing commercial hub,” he said.
The St. Regis Doha will also offer 4,100 square metres of meeting and conference space, business centre, shops, parking area, 4 restaurants — all-day dining restaurant, specialty restaurant, outdoor restaurant, lounge bar and a cigar bar; and for the ultimate in relaxation and recreation, a 1,200 square meters Spa is in plan, offering 8 to 10 treatment rooms in addition to a lavish fitness center spreading across 1,200 square metres of state-of-the-art equipment.

bhaggy3 February 4th, 2007, 05:13 PM can't they build anything above 5 star in Qatar? :(
Technically 5 stars is the highest that can be awarded to a hotel. The burj al arab has just given itself a status of 7 stars because it has just gone that one step further, however is does not actually count
Qatar Son 333 February 4th, 2007, 05:44 PM what about a 6 star it does exsist like armani hotel in burj dubai

True. The St. Regis in more ways than one is reguarded as one of the world's most prestegious hospitality chains; only a selected few are found around the world.
Qatar Son 333 February 4th, 2007, 05:49 PM so this one is 322 rooms ? not bad
omarmakki February 5th, 2007, 03:00 AM It looks huge!! Well, that explains the huge budget too! :)
Anyway, thanks for the photos Salman ;)
Greg February 5th, 2007, 07:02 AM Wow, now about every luxury brand hotel is in Doha. :)
QatPhils February 5th, 2007, 02:17 PM 322? at least good
amrja February 6th, 2007, 09:26 PM It really doesnt look that impressive to me. So far, most of the buildings in West Bay have domes in them.
Personally, I think thats great - it gives the buildings character, and it usually ends up with very nice designs; my favorite tower in Doha is the Barzan tower, the one right next to the Commercial Bank (the one with a mix of Islamic and modern architecture) because it has a mix of Islamic and modern architecture.

I think the plot is the one north of the intercon (in qatarson's drawing), since the St.Regis plot of land is rectagular and the side facing the beach is narrow. It found fit there perfectly.
Qatar Son 333 February 12th, 2007, 03:05 PM so we excpect it to be thare lots of things coming up in north doha yes , no
Massilia February 14th, 2007, 03:09 AM Makes sense it's there! This development is kinda long to be in the Dafna part! The Intercon will look tacky next to it!

suzan April 17th, 2007, 02:15 PM I take back what I said. I think that the way the picture has been taking it is what makes it look different. The one I posted previously is the one facing the road and the one poste by Massilia is the one which is actually posted facing the beach.
Cool, indeed.
Massilia April 17th, 2007, 03:34 PM ^^yes, this render gives us another perspective on the development.
But, like qatarson pointed out, there is still a difference, that is to say the top of the building (green instead of qatari patterns).
I wouldn't say this is a 'new' render though. Maybe it's been on the net for ages and we find it just now. Maybe the one on the construction site is the newest one. Who knows?

So true. But on the other hand, when you are talking about the first St Regis hotel in the entire Middle East area, a super hotel leaning towards +5*, one of only around 20 Worldwide (unlike the 4 Seasons, Hiltons, Sheratons... which pop up like rabbits), so excuse me Mr. Intercon, it is time that you become the parking area of the St Regis. Seriously now, old small projects should not get in the way of bigger much better ones.
Concerning the location, it might be true. But it will still be the St Regis as it is to the most of the the Toyota Land Cruiser. It is a name, and it is one of many of Alfardan's megaprojects... I can say it is a nice addition to the rich future portfolio of the company.
Nuff said... good night.
amrja September 8th, 2009, 01:30 AM About the location... as far as I know that entire waterfront in that area will soon be home to many different hotels... should they all just pack up and leave because the Intercon was there first?
How about the hotels in West Bay... should they only let one open just in case it damages another's business?
Its called a free market davy... at the end of the day it is the provider of the best services that will win out, and competition is healthy in any market. Doha is hardly the first city to have two hotels adjacent to each other.
One more thing... for the love of God, stop bitching for the sake of it... it gets tiring after a while.

Alrayyan March 11th, 2011, 03:39 PM Starwood to open St Regis in Qatar
Director of global sales for the Middle East, Rene Camilleri who described Qatar and the region as major players in Starwood’s global expansion plans
Starwood Hotels and Resort group’s St Regis property is set to be opened in Qatar by the end of the fourth quarter of this year, according to a visiting official, who identified the local and regional markets as essential components of the group’s future plans.
Starwood’s global director of sales for the Middle East, Rene Camilleri explained that the region represents the second largest and fastest growing market for Starwood, who have some 47 hotels already established, and 21 more in the pipeline in the area.
Already operating the W Doha and the Sheraton Doha Resorts and Conference Hotel, Starwood will open the St Regis this year, and have plans to open a Meridien in the country in 2013.
Rene Camilleri explained that as Qatar continues to develop, the prominence of Qatar Airways continues to facilitate its growth as a major destination.
“The airline plays a major part in the development of the country,” he said, adding “the local market is primarily driven by corporate travel, there is more and there will be more MICE business which will be a key area – Qatar is a destination that can host significant meetings and Qatar Airways is a large part of that.”
He noted that with the World Cup to be hosted in 2022, many more opportunities will arise, but declared it too early to announce any other concrete plans for his company.
With the St Regis set to open in Doha around the same time as the brand is also unveiled in Abu Dhabi, one of the hotels will become the first St Regis to open in the region, and Camilleri explained that the property will reflect the top end of the luxury market.
“This is our premium luxury brand,” he said, adding “it is the only band with a butler service and will cater to the top end of the market.”
“You always need to have a brand fit – that is very important,” he argued, adding “you need to see what is needed in a city and then look at a good fit.”
General managers from Starwood properties all over the world took part in the roadshow yesterday, to meet with customers and other industry officials.
Camilleri explained that whilst London remains the most popular destination with travellers from the region, Paris, Germany, Austria, Kuala Lumpur, Thailand and China are also strong markets for Middle Eastern custom.
Speaking at the Sheraton, Doha, Camilleri also expressed his pride at the property and the iconic status it has achieved as a landmark in Qatar over the years.
“The hotel still looks good, and it does exceptionally well in terms of numbers,” he said, adding “it is an iconic property and despite any new additions, it will always remain the Sheraton.”

OOh! I get it. To translate it: You think that Starwood property is having second thoughts on marketing this property as St.Regis.
Personally, I think its a rumour as Starwood (mother compnay of St. Regis and Sheraton, W Hotels) announced this hotel many times, as recent as last week.
