January 2007 Update

http://www.south-africa-tourism.com/image-files/giraffe.jpg

Hey, forumers!

There have been some small refinements in the setup of the South Africa section as time moves on, and discussion on new and different areas begins, as do gallery threads. Major cities have separate galleries and discussion areas, but the threads of minor cities (which have less activity) have combined discussion and gallery threads. The forum guidelines have been edited accordingly.

Welcome to a new year in South Africa, on SSC. We've had a good past year, and our numbers are once again on the rise. I think our section has improved tremendously from its humble beginnings. It is now an increasingly popular section, with several subforums (The Shebeen, etc.), and perhaps one of the most organized formats on all of SSC, atleast for a less populated section. There was an initial rough patch when the moderation changed hands, but generally, things have smoothed out, and our numbers are back up again.

Please post any ideas you have in this thread and feel free to PM me at any time if you have a comment.

The coming year should be a good one- several things are currently on the agenda. We will be pushing for a Sports (Discussion and Developments) section seperate from our existing combination of Shebeen (General Discussion) and Sports section. Along with this, we will hopefully have more descriptive subtitles below links to our different sections, specifying their differences for newcomers.

Have an excellent year! I hope this is a good year on the forums, and that there will be an abundance of exciting development to talk about. Please let me know if there is anything I can do better as a moderator.

SSC's South Africa forums need your help.

A recommendation has been put forward by Jan (site owner) that we keep our current setup. From his experience, having "one busy section" like the existing Shebeen/Sports area is better than having "two less busy sections" such as separated Shebeen and Sports sections, individual from eachother.

He is, however, willing to give sports its own section as requested.

As much as I value his opinion, I also would like to know what you, the South Africa forumers, would like. Please let me know your ideas in this thread, and in the next few days, a decision will be reached.

Just as a reminder, the two possibilities:

a.) The Shebeen & Sports is divided into "The Shebeen" for off topic and non-development discussion, and "Sports" for sports discussion and developments.

OR

b.) The existing setup is retained, with three busier subforums, as opposed to one busy subforum and two less-used subforums.

Is there really the need for a separate sports section? As it is the Shebeen + Sports is the least active forum. What about a photo section like the Moroccans have? The primary focus of the forums is cities and development afterall. IMO if there is a Sport forum it should include stadium construction and event bids etc

Thryve,
If there needs to be a subforum then ito should be for the Gallery threads.

Also there is a thread for Kimberley and Nelspruit that can be renamed Gallery & Discussion like the ones you've done for Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, East London, Strand, Pietermaritzburg, Bloemfontein and Polokwane. Good job in creating consistency for these threads.

Thryve,
Also can the "Links to New Developments" thread in the Projects subforum be updated with the links to the developments in the subforum. Would make it easier for forumers to navigate the subforum and prevent the duplication of development threads.

Responses:

1.) The Shebeen & Sports section will remain. A Photos section will be added shortly, as well as descriptive subtitles for the subforums for new users.

2.) The "Links to Developments" thread will be updated shortly. If anyone has time on their hands and wants to help compile a list of the developments (and maybe, links) that need to be added, it would be much appreciated. I am currently trying to work out a new system that would make it easier for new developments to be added to the list. Details of this new system will be announced shortly.
