View Full Version : Something I'm messing with: a 3-D sketch of DT Tampa
Jasonhouse January 11th, 2007, 05:38 AM Something we keep hearing all of the time is how the city council needs
a model to see how the skyline will change as each project is approved.
Well, the city council may not have any way of seeing how upcoming
projects will affect the skyline, but pretty soon, we will here...
http://www1.filehost.to/files/2007-01-11_01/042100_tmpsktch.JPG
ok ok, so it is some childishly simple stuff, but I'm not about to sit
here spending serious time drawing DT in detail (I'm not that good anyways)...
And as I fill the rest of the buildings in, I will of course increase the detail on buildings
that are literally boxes right now (like Wachovia, and 100 N Tampa).
I'm not sure if I'll bother with skinning the masses.
ps... Whatever you do, pretty please don't ride me to put such
and such building in and post the results. I will update this again
once I get the existing DT framed out, and that will be at least
a week or two from now...
Tampa on the move. January 11th, 2007, 06:08 AM Nice Jason, keep em coming. You are the man for starting this forum.. It is a great outlit to us people that love growth and skyskrapers.. Fill in Finergy Trump and Venu along with CP S-SQ and 12 Arts District.. Also TOC are not on here either..
Then we can see what is coming by mid to late 2009..
Thx again and Happy New Year..
Jason did you see the Dubai projects in the adds by google.. AT THE TOP RIGHT OF THE MAIN PAGE????
Robert.Maddrey January 11th, 2007, 07:15 AM Very cool. I've played a bit with sketchup trying to do the beercan as well. It can be quite a bit of fun.

Here is another more talented or skilled soul did with 100 North Tampa

FloridaFuture January 11th, 2007, 01:20 PM Very nice idea. It'll be fun to start to see the towers plugged in. I guess a tower will be put in when it starts going vertical?
Jasonhouse January 11th, 2007, 03:02 PM It'll go in whenever we want to see what it will look like in the skyline.
Who knows, maybe a few folks will pop up who want to help give the buildings higher detail, like the 100 N Tampa sketch that Robert showed...
Lakelander January 13th, 2007, 12:16 AM I don't know if it helps, but some kind of way, you can box out the skyline in Google Earth. Here's a pic of downtown Jax by a MetJax forumer
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74/asonj23/Google%20Earth%20Snapshots/Southbank-4.jpg
Architek January 13th, 2007, 12:33 AM I'm willing to help, I have sketchup, but i dont know much about tampa...
Jasonhouse January 13th, 2007, 04:08 AM Yeah, I know about google earth. I use it at work every day...
After I box out the skyline, I'm going to drop it on the google earth texture.. and after that i'll probably try to texture the buildings as best i can.
architek... cool... do you know how to apply texture/skin to masses?
I-275westcoastfl January 14th, 2007, 02:54 AM ^^what is your job?
Quegiebo January 14th, 2007, 02:11 PM Damn, Jason. Your skills are way outta my paygrade and talent level. No pressure my man -- we're all countin' on ya, so just do whatever you can. (lol)
b.t.w. For years I've "googled" tampa 3D skyline, but to no avail. As for me, I am talented enough to draw really thin stick figures -- and yes, quite well I must say, but that's about it for me in the talent dept. My stick-figure horse looks like a beaver... who knew?!?!
... attempt at early a.m. humor.
Architek January 14th, 2007, 08:52 PM working model of element./.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/enyers/element.jpg
FloridaFuture January 14th, 2007, 09:21 PM Looks good. Although it looks as though the building should be taller or thinner. Just my oppinion thoguh. :dunno: If you need the rendering....
http://www.novaregroup.com/images/portfolio/element.jpg
Architek January 14th, 2007, 09:40 PM Well if someone could give me the height of the podium and the building, i could make it exact because at the moment im just guesstimating, also the size of the floorplate?
FloridaFuture January 14th, 2007, 09:49 PM The building will be 460 feet tall. My guess would be the parking garage podium would be right around 110-115 feet. The land Element will sit on is a square block about 250 x 250 feet. Atleast that's what I could tell looking at google maps and measuring with their scale.
Architek January 15th, 2007, 12:14 AM I get what you mean Florida future, it is to wide, currently the square footage is 2x as much as it should be, but they only way to fix that would be to start all over....in terms of height i guessed it to be around 470. so i was close....version 2

Jasonhouse January 15th, 2007, 12:57 AM ^^what is your job?
I work as a CAD monkey for a survey firm, where I design plats part of the time, and do numerous other kinds of drawings of land and developments related to surveying the rest of the week... It's not as cool as it may sound, and the pay is low.
FloridaFuture January 15th, 2007, 12:58 AM That's definitley an improvement. Good stuff. :)
Maxim98 January 15th, 2007, 02:31 AM I work as a CAD monkey for a survey firm, where I design plats part of the time, and do numerous other kinds of drawings of land and developments related to surveying the rest of the week... It's not as cool as it may sound, and the pay is low.
Tell me about it.
I was an architect's whore for quite some time and I didn't get paid a cent. All in the name of education. I did talk with the out-of-college students at the firm and they had horrible pay. I know this, yet I still chase that career in architecture... we'll see...
I'm off to a really great start at least. I'm sorry you have to be a CAD monkey. Don't get me wrong - I like CAD and I'm great with it.... but I would kill myself if I had to do it day in and out.
Jasonhouse January 15th, 2007, 02:36 AM Well I like what I'm doing (especially whaere I'm doing it), it just doesn't pay well enough.
oh... the element sketch is missing the curvature of the lengthwise facades. If the tower portion is looked at in plan, they have a convex curvature to them...
Maxim98 January 15th, 2007, 02:40 AM Well I like what I'm doing (especially whaere I'm doing it), it just doesn't pay well enough.
At least you enjoy the environment; that's obviously key. I didn't care for the location (on Kennedy, but I live about an hour away on the south side of the bay) and the architect was hard to communicate with. I finished my obligation and was glad to be out.
I don't know, working in CAD for Wilson Miller wouldn't be so bad. I've toured their facilities in Ybor, which are amazing. Stunning renovation of the Tampa Brewery - maybe as good as Swope's work on that brewery on the other end of Ybor, near the Nuccio parkway (the name escapes me, even though I've been in the building half a dozen times).
Jasonhouse January 15th, 2007, 03:09 AM My cousin works for Willson Miller. She was bemoaning the move until it actually happened.

It's pretty amazing. She ok with it now that it's all said and done? I love that building.
Architek January 15th, 2007, 08:39 PM AWW how cute (sarcasm), but back to the point, Jason I didn't add the curve because its a pain in the ass to draw on a curve surface, as I just learned trying to do venu....So am i drawwing for the heck of it, or are we actually going to insert these into the skyline?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v289/enyers/venu.jpg
FloridaFuture January 15th, 2007, 11:41 PM I think the idea is to get them in the skyline to see how they look in it. That's a good job of Venu.
TampaMike January 15th, 2007, 11:48 PM I think the idea is to get them in the skyline to see how they look in it. That's a good job of Venu.
I think Jason wants to complete a scale of Tampa showing how Tampa will look with all the projects and then send it to Tampa council and get them to do something with it. Or we can always send it to Tampa Trib so we can get more recoganition like we did when we broke word of Tampa Towers. :)
Architek January 16th, 2007, 12:06 AM I'm still not done with element nor with venu, but there basic skelton is done just alot of detail work to be done.....anyone have other towers that need to be drawn? Please provide rendering.
FloridaFuture January 16th, 2007, 12:17 AM ^^Well considering they're already topped out the Towers at Channelside should be done. They're 2 x 29 story towers and are 337 feet tall.

I-275westcoastfl January 16th, 2007, 12:22 AM Element and Venu both look good so far.

Send the files to me... I am not planning on adding in buildings that don't actually exist until I'm done drawing the existing stuff. I have drawn a good bit more of the existing stuff and will update it soon (haven't been home sin several days, so I haven't worked on it anymore).

Maxim98 January 17th, 2007, 12:55 AM Only flaw seems to me to be in the circles on the roof.... c'mon, you can straighten them out... hehe...
Otherwise, it's really fantastic. :-)
Architek January 17th, 2007, 01:22 AM Lol, yea i got lazy towars the end, but i fixed the circles and adjusted the color of the glass, made it more transparent oon the backside.

I'm not sending anything to anyone. The project is meant to be for our enjoyment.
I don't consider myself be to in any position to be lecturing the council or anyone else. I'm just some amateur who happens to run a really big website.
Jasonhouse January 17th, 2007, 04:42 AM The stuff I had drawn in as of the weekend.

lol, okay :)
Architek January 25th, 2007, 10:51 PM iT doesn't let me send it to you, it keeps on getting returned to sender.
Jasonhouse January 26th, 2007, 01:26 AM wtf?
I'll send you another email via pm... give it to anyone else and you die. (rhetorically speaking)
also, I haven't worked on this at all since that last update... i just had no time, as my time was dominated by other more pressing things.
Quegiebo January 26th, 2007, 02:47 AM Looks good so far. . . :)
besides, any additional work on the sketch and someone's bound to call it "sprawl" anyway. ;)

too funny. thanks for the laugh!!
Jasonhouse March 26th, 2007, 10:10 AM Finally an update... But not nearly what people are expecting, I'm sure... Just don't have the time...
I have drawn several of the buildings that don't exist yet... but I won't start making potential skylines until I finish sketching the existing one.
My new favorite view of DT (for now)... Probably best seen from a plane taking off to the north from POK...
http://www3.filehost.to/files/2007-03-26_02/090532_tampa.jpg
... and yes, I know that image is missing numerous midrises in various locations...
Someone needs to get a quality pic from this angle, and rake in the royalties... Ain't gonna be me. Don't have the means. I do have the eye though. ;)
JBrisco March 26th, 2007, 01:37 PM I'm making downtown in GMax, and creating it in SimCity 4 Here's some progress on some towers

I've made a cheap version of AmSouth that I'm going to remake. Once completed these can be found on www.simtropolis.com
So if any of you play SimCity 4 this is a must :)
ATampaArnold March 26th, 2007, 07:07 PM WOW, that sun trust building is awesome.
I-275westcoastfl March 26th, 2007, 07:36 PM wow you need to definetly let us know when you upload those to simtropolis i want them!!

Check out my BAT thread on the forums, if you guys want (With permission of JasonHouse) I can create a thread on here about it too and post my updates here as well.
My goal is to create Tampa in SimCity as well as illustrate my own ambitions and architectural ideas for the city, which you will see soon is all going to be a reflection upon Tampa's history with the Moorish/Islamic and Cigar Style. :)

BTW check out JasonHouse's render on the end of Page 2!
Jasonhouse March 27th, 2007, 08:36 PM ^what render? Got a link to the specific post?
JBrisco March 27th, 2007, 11:59 PM I'm talking about this! I sort of bumped the page, and I didn't want anyone to over look your progress and a beautiful render.
