View Full Version : [TR] Turkish Highways • Karayolu, Otoyol
www.sercan.de January 12th, 2007, 06:31 PM North of Turkish Thrace (the area between Istanbul and Edirne) has really wonderful highway and ring roads network as you see at these photos. But South (Silivri-Tekirdağ-Keşan-İpsala) is not like this. But a new project is planned for South of Thrace (as North Marmara Motorway). So the connection with Greece of Istanbul-Salonica road will be complated...

ChrisZwolle January 13th, 2007, 01:18 PM Those motorways are extremely empty! Why did they build six lanes? four would do okay, it seems.

Verso January 25th, 2007, 01:25 PM ^ Turkish highway infrastructure is excellent! There's 'around' 1,892 km of "red" roads (motorways), right? (according to CIA) But what's the length of "blue" roads (divided roads, expressways)? Looks a lot! They could as well be called motorways, if you ask me.
EDIT: oops, now that I clicked on it, I see!:D So 1,881 km of "red" roads and 8,459 km of "blue" roads on 1.1.2005. 10,340 km of at least 4-lane, divided motorways/expressways!! :O
hkskyline January 27th, 2007, 06:49 AM Turkish, Italian PMs inaugurate major highway tunnel
ANKARA, Jan 23, 2007 (AFP) - Prime Ministers Romano Prodi of Italy and Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey on Tuesday inaugurated a 900-million-dollar (691-million-euro) highway tunnel that will reduce travel time between Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey's two biggest cities, by nearly one hour.
The tunnel that crossess the Bolu Mountains in northwestern Turkey is part of the Trans-European Motorway (TEM) and was built by the Italian company over 14 years.
It comprises a 27-kilometer (16.8-mile) motorway, a 2.9-kilometer (1.8-mile) six-lane tunnel, four viaducts and three bridges, which will reduce the average travel time between the capital and Istanbul, Turkey's largest city and industrial hub, from four and a half to three and a half hours.
Inauguration was delayed by several years after the authorities revised the project in 1999, when a powerful earthquake in nearby Izmit damaged the structure and increased safety concerns.
TEM is Turkey's busiest road and a major route between Europe and Asia.
"This tunnel, for which we pierced mountains, connects not only our cities but also brings Turkey closer to Italy and all of Europe," the Anatolia news agency quoted Erdogan as saying at the ceremony.
"It also strengthens our friendly ties with Italy," he said.
Prodi, who held talks with Turkish leaders in Ankara Monday, was scheduled to wrap up his two-day visit later in the day.
He urged Ankara to stick to the path of reform and its goal of European Union membership despite a partial suspension of accession talks, a sanction the bloc imposed in December following Turkey's refusal to grant trade privileges to EU member Cyprus.
ask curitiba January 27th, 2007, 07:46 AM Nice looking, picturesque highways! But can u tell me what are the plans? Now I can see the connection between Istambul and Ankara. Is it going to go further?

Brisbaner21 September 29th, 2007, 06:22 AM Looks like once you leave the city there are no more cars. These highways look very nice though.
KIWIKAAS September 29th, 2007, 07:33 PM It is certainly true that there are a number of beautifully contructed 6 lane motorways in Turkey with hardly any traffic on them. Definitely a case of future proofing.

x-type October 4th, 2007, 06:01 PM Turkey has fabolous motorways and it's really pitty that we don't have somebody from Turkey here who could post us his own photos, i really miss it!
btw, i have noticed that there is not a lot of traffic on those motorways and i don't see a reason for 3x3, although it is really great to have a lot of 3x3 motorways! of course, i exclude motorways near large cities which are too crowded and 6x6 often wouldn't be enough. such a contrast!

Majestic February 13th, 2008, 10:05 PM It's surprising to see that most of turkish motorways are built in a six-lane standard. Much more convenient but I wonder if they will ever be fully utilized.
www.sercan.de February 14th, 2008, 04:15 PM i think its mostly 3 lane, because Turkey isn't a flat country. Its very hilly, so you need a extra lane for the slow trucks.
Another reason is the increasing number of cars in Turkey

Onur February 19th, 2008, 07:37 PM ^^ I know additional 2 asphalt lane on Adana Motorway. For each one side, 2 concrete and 2 asphalt lanes it has.
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=37.029794,35.204959&spn=0.00418,0.007253&t=h&z=17 (Hybrid Mode, and additionally a drive-thru resthouse)
Messi February 19th, 2008, 07:59 PM I am also in favour of building 2x2 lanes outside urban areas. The money could be spent in other highway projects. With the constructions which will begin this year we'll have a completed highway network in Turkey.
ChrisZwolle February 19th, 2008, 08:39 PM Except for tunnels are the extra costs for a 3rd lane not very expensive. This way, Turkey can stay ahead of traffic jams in rural area's for a time. They did build 2x2 lane motorways in the Netherlands and Germany from then 1950's until the 1980's, which are now pretty congested, all wishing they had a 3rd lane from the start.
www.sercan.de February 20th, 2008, 10:41 PM Yes, Turkey will nedd 3x3 lanes in the future more

thank you, very nice pics.
i visit 2001 Trabzon and make the tour via Gerede and Samsun, a lot traffic 4 or 5 times more as the old E5 how i return via Erzincan, Sivas and Ankara.
Phantastic, but i know that the Turkish Goverment construct a lot of this Road-type (p.h. Ypsala-Tekirdag).
Nice, my next trip to Trabzon will be more easy :-)
Leofold April 13th, 2008, 10:46 AM ^^ I know additional 2 asphalt lane on Adana Motorway. For each one side, 2 concrete and 2 asphalt lanes it has.
That's correct, between Tarsus and downtown Adana, the highway has 4X4 lanes.

mantar December 7th, 2008, 08:28 AM Hello.
Can somebody tell me about the Project.
Bosporus Underwater-Motorway Tunnel?
The offers for this project was taken last summer (June 30th) and have been under evaluation until a couple days ago (December 3rd). The offer of the Turkish-Korean partnership-firm was accepted.
The 14.6km project comprises of:
- about 5.4km long European side road improvement, crossings, underpasses, tollgates & a tunnel operation center.
- a 3.3 km earthquake resistant double-deck (2 lanes each deck) shielded underwater bored tunnel
- and another ~6 km long Asian side road improvement and crossings.
The route follows the southern shores of Istanbul and will connect the 2x2x2 European side coastal road (Kennedy street) with the existing Asian side road network, that are all south of the current Marmaray project.
This investment is expected to cost around $1.5bn but it will not be financed by the government. On the other hand the contractor will run/maintain the tunnel for 30 years (will collect passing fees) before handing it back to the state. The 30 years time includes construction time so the faster it is completed the profitable it is for the firm.
Construction is expected to start in the first quarter of 2009 and continue for the next 4.5 years.
Kuvvaci December 7th, 2008, 08:33 AM Do you mean Motorway (Otoyol) as this cite?

http://i38.tinypic.com/20s6po0.jpg
ChrisZwolle December 7th, 2008, 12:27 PM Only 4 lanes? Building an expensive tunnel for congestion seems like a mistake to me...
Timon91 December 7th, 2008, 12:38 PM ^^Some tunnels of Boston's Big Dig also only have 2 lanes each direction (Ted Williams tunnel)
ChrisZwolle December 7th, 2008, 12:55 PM I don't think you can compare the non-commuter I-90 part there to a Istanbul Bosporus connection.
Timon91 December 7th, 2008, 01:01 PM That's right, but even though the TW tunnel only has two lanes, it caused less traffic jams on the normal route to Logan Airport. So same here, even though the tunnel has a low capacity, it might lower the traffic on the other Bosporus connections.
panda80 December 7th, 2008, 01:04 PM i've been to istanbul last year and wasn't impressed by its traffic.fuel is very expensive in turkey and many turks aren't using their cars anymore for commuting inside the city.and don't forget there are another 2 bridges between europe and asia in istanbul.so 2 lanes might be enough if there aren't traffic lights for few kilometres from the tunnel entrance.
Messi December 7th, 2008, 01:15 PM A third bridge is also coming and the most important: about 150 km of subway including marmaray is u/c and is waiting to be opened between 2009 and 2011 so we'll see an unbeliveable change in Istanbul's traffic within some years
ChrisZwolle December 7th, 2008, 01:16 PM The Bosporus Bridge carries 180.000 vehicles on 2x3 lanes. That's extreme. Very few other motorways carry so much traffic on that amount of lanes. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge is somewhat less busy with 150.000 vehicles on 2x4 lanes.
Messi December 7th, 2008, 02:15 PM Municipality's plan is to build a third bridge in the north of Istanbul which will be used by transit trucks and cars to Europe or European part of Turkey so that the existing bridges will get rid of trucks, buses and other transit passenger and additionaly a rail tunnel and another one for cars will be added. I think we'll see a hige change.

there is an english option on website. on the left click motorways then tolls of motorways and bosphorus bridges. u'll see "İstanbul Boğaziçi and Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridges Tolls " and "GDH Europe Motorway (Mahmutbey - Edirne crossroads) Tolls " these are which you need. u can see the prices exactly.
i checked for u, from edirne to istanbul(mahmutbey) you will pay 5,5 lira and for bridge(if you want go anatolian side) 3,25 lira.
priyatno patuvane :)

I know Turkey is currently not a member of EU, but it has been an associate member of EU for a very long time and its accession into the EU would probably take place by 2013. Under this situation, are there some EU standards for highways that you are supposed to follow? Lastly, are there any speed limits on these highways?
Excuse my ignorance please!
Thank you.
ChrisZwolle March 14th, 2009, 12:00 PM There are no EU standards for motorways. Many European countries have substandard motorways, like in Germany, Spain, Netherlands or Greece.
ChrisZwolle March 15th, 2009, 09:34 PM Are there plans for an Otoyol between Istanbul and the Greek border near Ipsala, now with the Greek A2 nearing completion? It would replace the D110 highway. Maybe they could number it O-5, being about 140 km long.
I also wonder if they will ever build a bridge or tunnel across the Dardanelles near Çanakkale.

hkskyline April 18th, 2009, 03:07 PM Italy's Astaldi bids to build Turkish motorway
MILAN, April 14 (Reuters) - Italy's second-largest builder, Astaldi , said on Tuesday it bid in a tender to build a motorway in Turkey, confirming a newspaper report.
A spokeswoman said the offer was made in a venture with other companies. She declined to give other details, saying the bidding process was still open.
Italian daily Finanza & Mercati said two consortiums, one including Astaldi, had made offers for the estimated $6 billion contract to build a motorway between the Mediterranean port of Izmir and Istanbul.
The report, which cited the Turkish press, said Turkish companies Limak Insaat and Makyol Insaat were also in the running.
Astaldi shares were up 4.26 percent at 3.7925 euros at 1415 GMT, around double the gains posted by the DJ Stoxx construction and building materials index <.SXOP>.

Mateusz August 19th, 2009, 03:03 PM Any news about Ankara-Adana motorway ? :)
Homem August 21st, 2009, 12:39 AM There's an important projected motorways network but , from what I know, the construction of motorways is almost blocked for years.
This basic network is essential in a country where traffic accidents are so many and roads are overloaded with trucks.
So Ankara-Pozanti (Adana) may wait several years more.

What's the reason of this block? Aren't turkish road crowded? Because there are a lot of important cities not yet fully connected by motorway?

Rijeka August 28th, 2009, 08:17 AM Can anyone tell me something about the road quality between Istanbul and Izmir. I see on the map there are not many motorways between the two. According to TomTom the best option is via Bursa and Balikesir, it's 564 km and it takes about 7 h. ViaMichelin gives the same distance and itinerary, but says it takes almost 9 h. And what's the actual fuel price in Turkey (unleaded and diesel)? Thanks!

One answer from Bulgaria. Road quality between Istanbul and Izmir is generally good, if you follow the main routes. Most of the road is 2x2, but not motorway (incl. the last say 150 km before Izmir). The Turks prefer the ferry Istanbul - Bandirma (boarding at Yenikapi) and then Balikesir - Manisa - Izmir (prices and timetable are available here (http://www.ido.com.tr/en/index.cfm?page=SubPage&kapsam=175&textid=2049&ln=EN), you only pay for the car). Ask them for the fuel prices but they are like 0,20 Euro higher.

Are there anywhere toppic about this bridge and proposed Dardaneli bridge? Will they make them like road-railway bridges, or they will make development, and heavy transit mistake again?
Taha October 10th, 2009, 11:07 PM The Ministry of Transportation plans to complete 12 new highways by the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic in 2023, the Anatolia news agency reported on Wednesday.
While Turkey's current highway network extendsd 2,238 kilometers, 228 of which are currently under construction, a total of 4,773 kilometers will be added with the ministry's new highway project. With the new highways, the eastern and western parts of Turkey will be much better connected.
One of the highway projects is a highway between the Gebze district of the northwestern province of Kocaeli and the Aegean province of İzmir, anticipated to be 421 kilometers long and to stretch from Gebze to İzmir via Bursa. Another project, called the Northern Marmara Highway, is planned to be 361 kilometers in length. The highway will start in the northwestern province of Adapazarı and will connect to Tekirdağ's Kınalı and neighboring highways, passing through the currently projected third Bosporus bridge of İstanbul. The Tekirdağ-Çanakkale-Balıkesir highway, which is planned to be 433 kilometers, will connect Thrace to the Aegean parts of Turkey. The Aydın-Denizli-Antalya highway, which is planned to be 335 kilometers long, will provide a direct route from İstanbul, Bursa, İzmir and Aydın to the southern province of Antalya. Other planned highways are along the Ankara-İzmir, Sivrihisar-Bursa, Ankara-Kırıkkale-Delice, Afyon-Burdur-Antalya, Ankara-Pozantı, Şanlıurfa-Habur and Şanlıurfa-Diyarbakır routes as well as another highway to connect Turkey's major cities to Iran and the Caucasus.

gramercy October 11th, 2009, 06:27 PM I've just been through this thread. I must say I haven't paid much attention to it in the past, but its really great!
400+ kms of new highways every year for the next decade and a half is really impressive.
en büyük türkiye başka büyük yok!
Mateusz December 29th, 2009, 08:14 PM That's a demanding challenge...400 km of motorways per year in rather difficult terrain
Ilgar December 30th, 2009, 12:43 AM I wish we had such roads as Turkey has:)
treichard January 12th, 2010, 03:52 PM How are the motorway-grade access roads designated and signed? I mean highways like these:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.894667,29.327059&spn=0.023325,0.033131&z=15
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=40.963843,29.219985&spn=0.01165,0.016565&z=16
Are they considered part of the parent motorway (O-4 in this case), or given some other designation? Are pics available showing how such an access road is signed along the parent motorway near their junction and along the axis road?
FazilLanka January 14th, 2010, 02:49 AM I love these roads...

http://test.kgm.gov.tr/Sayfalar/KGM/SiteTr/Root/otoyolharitalari.aspx
O-51 and O-52 have swallowed up O-50 near Adana, and the Gaziantep bypass is exit-numbered as an spur of O-52 rather than being a separate route (formerly? O-54). Google and Yahoo Maps have their own variations of the O-50s numbers, too. Would anyone want to post a few pics to show what the guide signs say there? I'm curious.
I saw earlier in this thread that there is an ambitious plan to build an extensive motorway system across the country. Has the numbering plan for the unbuilt highways been announced? I noticed that the Wikipedia mentions an O-57 for the future, but that's only one future motorway:
http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otoyol_57&twu=1
treichard January 23rd, 2010, 08:47 PM The maps at the Turkish General Directorate of Highways
http://test.kgm.gov.tr/SiteCollectionImages/KGMimages/Otoyollar/mersin.jpg
suggest that the O-50 and O-54 numbers aren't the present designations. O-50 on the map above is part of O-51 and O-52 on the official map, and the O-54 Gaziantep ring road is exit-numbered as an access road of O-52 (exits 14, 141, 142, ..., 147) in the official map.
Were O-50 and O-54 the old designations in use before O-51 and O-52 connected the whole O-50s motorway network from Mersin to Sanliurfa? Or is there another story of these O-50s designations that explains the discrepancy?
Are there online pics of those motorways showing the signed designations along the supposed O-50 and O-54? I've searched for them but I haven't found any. But I'm curious.
Also, have O- numbers been selected for the rest of the planned and under-construction motorway network across the country?
x-type January 23rd, 2010, 10:10 PM that motorway Gebze - Bursa - Izmir would be fantastic, i would like to see it as first built project in TR.

ChrisZwolle October 16th, 2010, 11:18 PM @WalkTheWorld; your first picture is not an Otoyol, I think, but some expressway (D-road). Otoyols have generally almost always 2x3 lanes and a very generous alignment, tight curves like that are not very common.

Oh I see. This section is pretty much under construction in the last 50 km section to Eskisehir. You move from one kind or road to the other without noticeing much change so I thought they were all part of the same network.
Indeed the more you approach your final destination you appreciate it is just a double carriageway with level junctions, left turns, traffic lights and so on.
My colleagues generally refer to it all as "Otoban"
I also noticed just one "telepass-style" gate so I guess tha't just for the FSM bridge.
Detail of one the the tunnels. Strangely enough the Turks have chosen fluorescent tubes where we use leds. Weird for a country so "hell-bent" for modernity. And presumedly more expensive in the long run.

laurus October 18th, 2010, 07:16 AM Giant highway to boost regional economies
Turkeys largest-ever highway project, which will link Istanbul to İzmir, will reduce travel time to three hours from 6.5. The highway is planned to be completed in seven years. Cities such as Kocaeli, Bursa, Balıkesir and İzmir, which are on the route of the highway, will experience a boom in exports, tourism, employment and social life

The $11-billion-project will include the world's second-longest suspension bridge, to be built over the Gulf of İzmit. The bridge will be 3,000 meters long. Hürriyet photo
Reducing the travel time between Istanbul and İzmir two of Turkeys biggest cities to three hours, the Gebze-Orhangazi-İzmir highway, to be completed in 2017, will create huge changes in the economic and social life of a number of cities.
As the project links İzmir to both Istanbul and Europe, it will have a positive impact on İzmirs economic and social development, according to Ekrem Demirtaş, board chairman of the İzmir Chamber of Commerce.
The Turkish government signed a build-operate-transfer deal on Sept. 27 this year with a consortium of six construction companies to carry out the country's largest-ever highway project. The $11-billion-project will include the world's second-longest suspension bridge, to be built over the Gulf of İzmit. The bridge will be 3,000 meters long.
İzmir has been a dead-end street for many years, according to Demirtaş, who said that with the construction of the highway, the city would complete its highway, railway and marine transport triangle. Thanks to this project, transportation to İzmir will become easier. It will contribute to the citys tourism and trade relations, Demirtaş said.
If the construction begins concurrently from Istanbul and İzmir, the employment rate in İzmir will increase, mainly in the construction sector, according to Demirtaş. Thanks to this project, transportation costs will decline, businesspeople from İzmir will easily reach Istanbul and Europe while the city will receive much more investment and tourists.
Realizing potential in tourism
According to Demirtaş, if the travel time between Istanbul and İzmir is slashed from its current 6.5 hours, İzmir will be able to reach its annual tourism targets. Our tourism centers, such as Çeşme, Seferihisar, Foça, Dikili and Bergama, will attract more tourists, he said.
The İzmir-Gebze highway will contribute greatly to the social, cultural and economic life of cities on the route of the project, according to Mustafa Türkmenoğlu, coordinator of the Aegean Exporters Union.
Agricultural exports have a big share in the Aegean regions total exports, Türkmenoğlu said. This highway will provide many advantages to our exporters. The taste and quality of agricultural products will be protected and the costs will decline. Strong logistics is a must for exports, he said.
Difficulties due to inadequate land links between Turkeys large cities will come to an end with the project, according to Ender Yorgancılar, board chairman of the Aegean Region Chamber of Commerce. As well as connecting two industrial cities, the highway will also link economies of the Aegean region and the Marmara region, Yorgancılar said.
İzmir has the potential to become an important logistics center thanks to its port, said Yorgancılar, adding that road transportation is of crucial importance in Turkey. This new highway project will pave the way for a new production and trade model.
Increased immigration a problem
The travel time between Istanbul and Bursa, another industrial western city, will be between 60-90 minutes when the highway is completed. It will also reduce the travel time between Bursa and İzmir to around 150 minutes, according to Necati Şahin, head of Bursa branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers. Besides these positive aspects of the project, however, it will also increase migration to Bursa. The city will become the backyard of Istanbul, Şahin said.
According to data from the Transportation Ministry, a total of seven construction sites will be built during a 20-month period and the project will indirectly provide jobs for some 50,000 people. Speaking to Anatolia news agency, Nail Çiler, board chairman of the Gebze Chamber of Commerce, said the one-hour İzmit Gulf passage would be reduced to just six minutes. The traffic density of the gulf will decline by 30 percent. People will gain time and reduce fuel consumption, Çiler said.
The Marmaray Project, a rail transport project in Istanbul that starts from the Gebze district in Kocaeli province, the Informatics Valley project to be built in Kocaeli and the giant highway project have all increased the importance of the region, according to Çiler.

I saw that map on Domus Ludicrae Maximae (European Skybar), on thread Maps of Europe and the rest of the world, part V. I like that plan of otoyollari, it's perfect for Turkey. But I believe 4 lanes is enough, 6 is too much IMO for some otoyollari.

Triple C December 22nd, 2010, 01:16 AM ^^ Yeah, 2 extra lanes are such an asphalt and money waste. But 2x2 isn't enough for intermetropolitans. Also, the main corridors of D roads (Karayolları) should be 3x2 with Otoyol asphalt IMO.
